• Atheros AR2413 wireless not working after shutdown

  I am using a Ubuntu 11.04 on an Acer aspire 3680 laptop and my wifi is not working. I followed the below commands to install the madwifi driver: sudo su apt-get install subversion cd /usr/src svn checkout http://madwifi-project.org/svn/madwifi/trunk madwifi tar cfvz madwifi.tgz cd madwifi make && make install echo "blacklist ath5k" /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf echo "ath_pci" /etc/modules modprobe ath_pci sudo reboot After installation I am facing the same problem. My wifi wont work after I shutdown. Infact it didn't work after suspend but I rectified that problem by the following commands: Command 1: sudo rmmod -f ath_pci sudo rfkill unblock all sudo modprobe ath_pci along with the command SUSPEND_MODULES=ath_pci added to the /etc/pm/config.d/madwifi directory. So if I suspend and then on my laptop the wifi loads well and doesn't create a problem. But if I shutdown my laptop the wifi never loads again and eachtime I have to run a Ubuntu 9.04 live CD to load it. I did try adding the Command 1 to the /etc/rc.local directory but still it doesn't work. So my question is: What should I do in order to make my wireless work without having to run a live CD of ubuntu 9.04 everytime after shutdown? Thanks.   What options do I have for pending work that can't acquire a lock via the following sample? System.Threading.Interlocked.CompareExchange<TrustPointStatusEnum> (ref tp.TrustPointStatus, TrustPointStatusEnum.NotInitalized,TrustPointStatusEnum.Loading); Based on my research think I have the following options: I can use Threading.SpinWait (for very quick IO tasks) at the cost of CPU I can use Sleep() which has an unreliable wake up time I'm not sure of any other option, but what I want to make sure of is that all these options work with the .NET 4 async and await keywords, especially if I use Task to run them on a background thread

• Hostapd to connect laptop to Android

  i am trying to set up my laptop as an access point for my Android to use WiFi, so i knew that ubuntu sets the network as Ad-Hoc which is not discoverable by android, So i tried the method explained here -which i found on many other websites- but when i run hostapd.conf this error appears : nl80211: Failed to set interface wlan0 into AP mode nl80211 driver initialization failed. • Wireless does not work anymore after software update with Ubuntu 12.10 on a Dell Latitude E6230

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.10 on my DELL Latitude E6230, on first boot wifi worked properly but when I updated the software it stopped working. I can't figure out the problem... The wireless network controller is a Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless Lan Controller (rev 01) "lshw -class network" gives, for the above controller: *-network UNCLAIMED description: Network controller product: BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller vendor: Broadcom Corporation physical id: 0 bus info: pci@0000:02:00.0 version: 01 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list configuration: latency=0 resources: memory:f7d00000-f7d03fff After reading the answer to another similar question, I edited the file NetworkManager.conf to make "managed=true", but that did not make any difference, it is as if the wireless adapter were not there. In the "Network" setting window, I only see "Wired" and "Network proxy". Wireless has just disappeared: rfkill list all 0: hci0: Bluetooth Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no and that's it! Nothing about the wireless controller... Any suggestions?

  I am looking to get the following - Basic code review to make sure they follow the guidelines imposed. Security code analysis to make sure there are no loopholes. No performance bottlenecks by doing a load test etc. We have lot of code coming in from third parties and is becoming laborious to manage code reviews and hence looking to see if others employ such practices. I understand that it may be a concern for some and would raise the question "Well, who is going to make sure the agency is doing their job right?" But basically I am just looking for a third party who can hold all vendor code to the same standards.

• Proprietary AMD driver freezes my Ideapad

  I got this problem that I can't figure out what to do about. On Ideapad s205 with Ubuntu 12.04* (64), if I install Catalyst Centre 12.1 or newer it Freeze (lock's up), 1-3 times a day. It doesn't suffer freezing when using Radeon driver, but Radeon driver are considerably slower and flickers, so I would really prefer the proprietary driver (with no freezing). I reported the bug to launchpad but it doesn't get attention. -Also tried Ubuntu forums. Reported bug to AMD bug site "http://ati.cchtml.com/", but I don't think anybody reads it. Wrote AMD support several times, but get silly answers like "reinstall Windows". -Asked them to send the bug to Linux driver developers, but never heard a thing (more than once). The same nothing happens when writing to the feedback link from AMD driver download site. I'm so frustrated here, any advice would help. Thanks (*The same on Ubuntu 11.10)

• Using Resources the Right Way

  It’s an interesting time in computing technology. At one point there was a dearth of information available for solving a given problem, or educating ourselves on broader topics so that we can solve problems in the future. With dozens, perhaps hundreds or thousands of web sites and content available (for free, in many cases) from vendors, peers, even colleges and universities, it seems like there is actually too much information. Who has the time to absorb all this information and training? Even if you had the inclination, where to start? In fact, it seems so overwhelming that I often hear people saying that they can’t find the training they need, or that vendor X or Y “doesn’t help their users”. On questioning these folks, however, I often find that they – and sometimes I - haven’t put in the effort to learn what resources we have. That’s where blogs, like this one, can help. If you follow a blog, either by checking it often or perhaps subscribing to the Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feed, you’ll be able to spread out the search or create a mental filter for the information you need. But it’s not enough just read a blog or a web page. The creators need real feedback – what doesn’t work, and what does. Yes, you’re allowed to tell a vendor or writer “This helped me because…” so that you reinforce the positives. To be sure, bring up what doesn’t work as well –  that’s fine. But be specific, and be constructive. You’d be surprised at how much it matters. I know for a fact at Microsoft we listen – there is a real live person that reads your comments. I’m sure this is true of other vendors, and I also know that most blog authors – yours truly most especially – wants to know what you think.   In this blog entry I’d to call your attention to three resources you have at your disposal, and how you can use them to help. I’ll try to bring up things like this from time to time that I find useful, and cover in them in more depth like this. Think of this as a synopsis of a longer set of resources that you can use to filter whether you want to research further, bookmark, or forward on to a circle of friends where you think it might help them.   Data Driven Design Concepts http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsazure/jj156154 I’ll start with a great site that walks you through the process of designing a solution from a data-first perspective. As you know, I believe all computing is merely re-arranging data. Even if you don’t use the specific technologies the instructions use, the concepts hold for almost any other technology that deals with data. This should be a definite bookmark for a developer, DBA, or Data Architect. You’re guaranteed to be heard – you can suggest changes, talk about how useful – or not – it is, and so on. • Change the brightness adjustment interval

  So whenever I hit my dim/brighten keys on the keyboard, a notification bubble pops up with the screen brightness. All that's fine, but I would like to be able to change how much the brightness changes with each key press. For example, right now it takes just 5 presses to go from the completely dark to the brightest setting. However, I know from the "Brightness/Lock" setting that the screen is capable of much smaller intervals than this. Is there a way to change how much the brightness jumps each time the keys are pressed?

• Symbol of VPNanytime is not shown anymore after upgrading from Ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10

  Usually when I start VPN anytime (by calling a certain url in firefox) in Ubuntu 11.10 I saw a little "green symbol with a yellow lock in front of it" for the VPN anytime client near the clock. If I wanted to quit the VPN connection I just clicked on this symbol and hit logout/quit. Today I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10 and the VPN connection works here fine too. But the symbol near the clock is not shown anymore. Is this a bug or do I have to set this up manually? And is there a way to quit the client perhaps by terminal? Currently I just do a restart, when I want the vpn connection terminated and that's kind uncomfortable. :-) Thanks for any suggestions!

  I remember that in versions of ubuntu around 9.04 was possible to disable user to shutdown ( and maybe suspend too ) system if there was other user logged in.Something like policykit or similar. Is it possible to do in 11.04 ? Thanks edit: if someone needs ( for own risk ), little change in /usr/lib/pm-utils/bin/pm-action will allow user to suspend machine if he is only user logged in or when user will run sudo pm-suspend. • Use hotplug and turn on/off PCI device for replacing NIC

• Retail Link data storage requirements

  I was asked today about how much data an average Retail Link analyst (Walmart vendor) would consume.  I thought I would write this small post for future reference. Of course this vastly depends on the amount of skus, how long you want to archive data, and if you want store level sales. Most reports take up very little space. Most times when you download a report (total sales per sku for last week), you will overwrite the previous week’s report.  However, most users will take the data inside their downloaded report, and add it to a database or larger excel spreadsheet.  This way, the user has a history of the sales of each item/sku per week over the last 2+ years.  I would estimate 1 user to consume around 1-2 gb of space, at most, over the course of 2 years. If you start archiving store level sales those numbers can drastically increase up to 10gb or more very quickly.

• Ubuntu 12.04 not Locking Encrypted Hard Drive on Log Out

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome 3.4. I have two external hard drives. I encrypted both using Ubuntu's Disk Utility. When I use Nautilus to mount them, I'm asked for my decryption password. Regardless of whether I then click "Forget password immediately" or "Remember password until you logout", though, I find that Ubuntu does not lock the drives when I log out. Rather, when I log back in, they're still mounted. (To be clear, restarting the computer does unmount them so that they require the password on the next log in.) I'm concerned that these drives are remaining unprotected when I log out without restarting my computer. I would be grateful for help understanding whether this is a bug. Thank you!

• Ubuntu 12.04 crashing

  We have a server with 2x32gb sas raid 1 and 4x1tb raid 10 + 2x1tb hot spares. Whenever we try to copy the 1tb and 1.5e6 files to a backup location (even just using tty1 cp command) it fails. We have tried using backintime and dejadup, and resorted to a manual cp to an external usb2 HDD. When that failed, we tried installing an internal HDD on the mobo (not on raid) and another cp, which also fails. The failures lock up the system and we are left with an unfortunate hard reboot situation. After reboot, syslog tends to be empty (only containing newly booted data) and we haven't a clue where to start. It has been 3 weeks since our last successful backup and we are getting nervous... -using 3ware raid controller, 8gb ram and nvidia pciexpress graphics with a gigabyte mobo and xeon 4-core processor.

  I have a cron job which runs every 30 minutes that changes the background image by running this bash script: #!/bin/bash export DISPLAY=:0 export GSETTINGS_BACKEND=dconf wpdir="/home/username/Pictures/wallpapers/" prefix="file://" file=`ls $wpdir | shuf -n 1` gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri "$prefix$wpdir$file" This worked perfectly until I upgraded to 14.04. Now, running the script produces this output: (process:27459): dconf-WARNING **: failed to commit changes to dconf: Could not connect: Connection refused What can I do to fix this? Google didn't turn up any useful results. EDIT: I noticed that running this does change the background displayed on the lock screen, but it does not affect the desktop background.

• Can't activate "mirror display"

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 on a Dell latitude E6410, I have a problem when using the VGA output I always have dual monitor and can't switch on the "mirror display" toggle under systems setting/displays. It's rather annoying when having to do presentation with a video projector. the option "mirror display" is in light grey and I can"t tick the box.   The backstory is that the normal Intel GPU drivers don't do the various OpenGL extensions that my hobby coding and some games want. So I have to install xorg-edgers and then its happy. However, last Wednesday or so there was an update to xorg-edgers - lots of packages - and it broke badly; the drivers lock up and take the whole computer with them; hard reset required. So how can you downgrade - select package versions in a PPA that represent a point in the past, ignoring versions newer than that?

  When I click on the Help Center Icon in the 'System' menu, it takes more than a minute to launch the program. More than a minute, for a text only program seeming like a website! All my other programs work fine, and I saw this problem also on other computers. Is there a reason for this? Will it be fixed? I think it is an important issue for beginners.
