• Custom PC won't boot Windows 7 dvd but does with windows vista

  I ordered a custom build PC. (It was assembled by the store). This is the setup Motherboard: Asrock A75 PRO4-M DVD drive: LG GH24NS90 SSD: Samsung 830 series 128GB DDR3 SDRAM: 2× Corsair XMS3 CMX4GX3M1A1600C9 (2× 4GB) APU (CPU+GPU): AMD A8-3850 Boxed I got a installation DVD for Windows 7 Professional x64 English (including SP1), but it doesn't work. I got a new one from the store and it doesn't work either. However they work on a other PC. So the DVDs aren't bad. I tried an old installation DVD for Windows Vista. Both 32 bit and 64 bit work. So the boot order and such are right and working on the new PC. Is there something I'm missing here? Any ideas on how to make it work?

• Windows Vista Home memory usage problem

  Hi, I have a Windows Vista Home laptop from a client that is running on 1GB ram. The laptop is used for super basic things, word, internet, outlook, etc. What makes zero sense is that the RAM is being completely consumed, causing the PC to hang sometimes when it can't take it anymore. However, in task manager, the processes appear to only be consuming maybe 100MB (Private Working Set). The client literally has a simple setup, and is running kaspersky, though that does not seem to be indicating it is the cause of the excessive memory usage. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to resolve the memory issue or how to track down what is actually happening and fix it? G

I dont know where I put the Windows 7 CD and I was wondering if anyone knew of any way of fixing this problem? I'm guessing I deleted something I shouldnt have deleted.......   I recently just moved to Windows 7 and I noticed that many of my older third-party apps didn't look so good at the high DPI I had set (150dpi versus the typical 96dpi). After searching the web for ways to get my apps to look good again, I stumbled upon the "Windows XP style DPI scaling" option. I enabled it and suddenly the apps looked good again. While I'm happy, I'm also suspicious. What did I lose by enabling this feature? Could someone explain to me the differences in how the screen is rendered with and without this feature, or explain the trade offs of using it?

• Belkin Wireless G router not working on Windows 7

  I have a Belkin F5D7230-4 Wireless G router which used to work on XP. I have a clean Windows 7 install (on the same desktop PC), and it just won't work. Device Manager lists the adapter as a USB device, but it says "The drivers for this device are not installed", even though the driver installer said the installation was OK. Manage Wiresless Networks says "wireless is not currently enabled". The WLAN AutoConfig service is running. My specific question is which of the two symptoms above should I go for first? Should I try to fix the driver installation somehow, or should I try to enable wireless? Is one caused by the other, or is this two independent problems? Any other thoughs that could help me are also appreciated.

• Desktop stops working in Windows 7

  I'm having an odd problem on one of my Windows 7 machines. At machine startup, explorer.exe is working properly - I can use the Start menu, click on desktop icons, etc. At some later point, though, I lose the ability to interact with desktop icons. I can't double-click to open files on the desktop, and I can't right-click to see the properties window. Oddly enough the Start menu still works properly, and I can still open an Explorer window into my desktop and access everything. I can get around the problem by killing explorer.exe and restarting it using Task Manager, but it's annoying to have to do this over and over. Does anyone have any ideas? I took a look at startup files with msconfig and didn't see any obvious problems. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

• Creating a password-protected task in Windows 7

  I would like to configure a task like "child control software", so it would hibernate the pc at certain times. Is it possible to prevent modification (here: pausing) of a task through requiring the entering of the admin password to modify, EVEN THOUGH the currently-logged-in (and only) user is the admin account itself? (Do you know of any child control software that does NOT require an additional account yet is able to hibernate the system at certain times?) Thanks a lot!

  here's my situation: I had an HDD with Windows 8 installed (UEFI mode). I bought a SSD and wanted to do a clean install of Windows, so I thought that disabling the HDD and leaving the SSD as the only drive when installing was the right procedure to install the boot manager on the SSD. Unfortunately, after I plugged the HDD back in, the computer won't boot unless I select from the BIOS directly the SSD as the boot device. I guess the problem is that I have two Windows Boot Managers on two separate drives and they conflict. How would I solve this problem (excluding a format of the HDD, because I need to access data on the old Windows partition and, ideally, I would like to be able to boot that partition)?

• Hotkey to switch between windows in taskbar order in Windows 7

  Is there a hotkey to cycle through open windows in the order that they appear on the taskbar. This should switch windows without additional keypresses. I know of win+T. This shortcut puts focus on the first taskbar icon and allows you to select and display a window with up/down/enter. I would ideally like something like Ctrl+Win+Down to immediately switch to the next window. If not, then is there any way to enable this behaviour on a completely locked down PC where I cannot install software, run executables or edit the registry?

• Problems with starting windows service on windows xp SP3

  I'm currently facing a problem which I can not resolve and I really don't know what to do anymore. When I'm trying to start the service I receive the message: "The service is started but again also stopped, this because that some of the services will stop if they have nothing to do, for example the performance logs and the alerts service". I've looked into the Windows Logs but nothing is written there which could describe why my service is all the time stopping. I've also tried to fire the windows service via the command prompt which gives me the message: "The service is not started, but the service didn't return any faults.". I've tried to remove all keys which references to my service, which didn't resolve the issue. I've searched on google (maybe not good enough) to find an answer but I didn't found any. I did found some websites which describes what I could do, but all of these suggestions didn't work. This is kinda ** because I do not know where to look. I do not have any error message, i do not have any id which i can use to search on. I really don't know where to start and I hope you guys can help me on this one. Detailed explanation about the windows service OS: Windows XP SP3 .Net Framework: .Net 4.0 Client Profile Language: C# Development environment: Visual Studio 2010 Professional (but Visual Studio 2012 RC is installed) Communications: WCF (Named Pipes), WCF (BasicHTTPBinding) Named Pipes: I have chosen for this solution because I wanted to communicate from a windows service to a windows form application. It worked now for quite some time but suddenly my windows service shuts it self down and I couldn't restart it anymore. There are two named pipes services implemented: An event service which will send any notification to the windows form application and an management service which gives my windows form application the possibility to maintain my windows service. BasicHTTPBinding: The basic http binding makes the connection to a central server. This connection is then used for streaming information from the client to the server. • Looking for definitive answer to accessing a network drive/NAS/SMB drive via Windows 7 HOME and Windows 7 Professional. Is it possible and how?

  I want to be able to access my Lacie 2Big network drive in Windows 7 Explorer. I have a machine with Windows 7 Home and one with Windows 7 Professional. Neither Windows 7, home or pro, can access the drive. The Windows 7 Home machine displays the drive in its Explorer, with the capacity, but on clicking the icon, I get another window, blank with the busy pointer which does not eventually stop. The drive is working perfectly. How do I know this? Because I can access it with no problems on my Apple Mac, Windows XP home and Ubuntu machines on the same network as the Windows 7 machines. Except for the Windows XP home machine that required Lacie ethernet agent program, the Mac and the Ubuntu machines needed no setup, the drive appeared like any other drive. So my 2 questions: Is it possible to access a network share drive, e.g. a NAS like Lacie 2big in Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional. If so how? I read on Microsoft's own forums and elsewhere that network sharing drives, e.g. via SambaSMB is NOT possible on Windows 7 Home.   Basically, I'm trying to find out which of the following files come packaged with the Windows 8 RTM (that is, the final version). Just to be clear, we're not wanting to know if any of the runtime files (listed below) are or were included with any of the previous versions (Beta, CTP, RS etc) or releases of Windows 8 - we are just interested in this compatibility question as far as Windows 8 RTM (Final Version) is concerned. In addition, if possible, we would also like to know which of the below files (if any) come shipped and registered with the Windows 8 RT (on ARM) version. As far as the ARM version is concerned, you're welcome to base your answer on the latest version of Windows 8 RT (on ARM) that is available at the date and time your answer is posted. (This will also serve to future-proof this question as additional releases or versions of Windows 8 and Windows 8 RT on ARM come out).   I need a help on getting Special folder in windows service program. I used this code in my Windows Form application: Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.ApplicationData); and got the path, ""C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming"* But if I run the same code in my Winows Service project I got the path: "C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\" But I need the earlier path (got in Windows Form). How do I get the same path in Service projet also. I have user setting file, log, config file in the "C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming" folder. So I have to refer the same path both in my Windows Form application and Windows Service project. Can somebody tell me, what is the difference here and how do i get the same path in both type of project? Thanks, sharath

• Disable alt + tab moving windows by itself

  Whenever I press Alt + Tab , Unity moves the window I'm switching to so that the whole window is inside the screen. This behavior is excruciatingly annoying because I often move a window (usually text editors) partially outside the current screen so I can view another window below it (usually a browser). Every time I Alt + Tab back to the text editor, I'm getting an unnecessary virtual screen switch, and Unity is rearranging the windows behind my back. For instance, here is a browser and text editor on Virtual Screen 1 (top left), note that the text editor is partially outside the current screen: Then I Alt-Tab to the browser (or clicked on it): Next, I Alt + Tab again to get back to the text editor, but Alt-Tab switched me to Virtual Screen 4 (bottom right) because a larger percentage of the text editor window is on virtual screen 4 than in virtual screen 1; and the browser is no longer in the screen. Also note that the text editor window moves from being on the bottom-right to the top-left, which is very disorienting as I can no longer keep track of where any of my windows are since they all keep moving around by themselves.. How do I disable this behavior? I don't want to have any virtual screen switch when Alt + Tab , especially since Alt + Tab does not list windows that is completely not in the current virtual screen anyway.

I just want that the 3 pc set like gateway 192.168.1.100, are filter by squid proxy loaded in win2008 so in win2008 I 've set in control panel the proxy 192.168.1.100:3128 and in win2008 browser work, the connection is filtered by proxy, but in 3 pc not works, so maybe I should route all incoming request into squid, but I dunno how ... thanks

• BOINC permissions issue running as non-admin on Windows PC

  I installed BOINC (running World Community Grid) on a PC (running Vista) under an administrator's account. When logged in as a standard user, and BOINC is set to run as a screensaver, it fails to connect and run properly. Only when the program is run as an administrator, does it actually run in the standard user's account. What is the correct way to install and run BOINC for standard users (non-admin) on Windows? -- Not specific to Vista necessarily.

• Windows Question: RunOnce/Second Boot Issues

  I am attempting to create a Windows XP SP3 image that will run my application on Second Boot. Here is the intended workflow. 1) Run Image Prep Utility (I wrote) on windows to add my runonce entries and clean a few things up. 2) Reboot to ghost, make image file. 3) Package into my ISO and distribute. 4) System will be imaged by user. 5) On first boot, I have about 5 things that run, one of which includes a driver updater (I wrote) for my own specific devices. 6) One of the entries inside of HKCU/../runonce is a reg file, which adds another key to HKLM/../runonce. This is how second boot is acquired. 7) As a result of the driver updater, user is prompted to reboot. 8) My application is then launched from HKLM/../runonce on second boot. This workflow works perfectly, except for a select few legacy systems that contain devices that cause the add hardware wizard to pop up. When the add hardware wizard pops up is when I begin to see problems. It's important to note, that if I manually inspect the registry after the add hardware wizard pops up, it appears as I would expect, with all the first boot scripts having run, and it's sitting in a state I would correctly expect it to be in for a second boot scenario. The problem comes when I click next on the add hardware wizard, it seems to re-run the single entry I've added, and re-executes the runonce scripts. (only one script now as it's already executed and cleared out the initial entries). This causes my application to open as if it were a second boot, only when next is clicked on the add hardware wizard. If I click cancel, and reboot, then it also works as expected. I don't care as much about other solutions, because I could design a system that doesn't fully rely on Microsoft's registry. I simply can't find any information as to WHY this is happening. I believe this is some type of Microsoft issue that's presenting itself as a result of an overstretched image that's expected to support too many legacy platforms, but any help that can be provided would be appreciated.   In Windows 2003 I was able to change the registry key as follows to display the actualy computer name on the desktop using the Computer Desktop Icon. System Key: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}] Change "LocalizedString" value to %COMPUTERNAME% I'm getting access denied messages using regedit for this key and I'm unable to give full rights to this specific key as well as administrator. Does anyone have a better solution for displaying the computer name on the desktop? Thanks.

• Airport Extreme and Windows PC via regular LAN (not WIFI)

  So I got an airpoort extreme, and everything works beautifully on the mac, but my windows 7 PC which is connected via a regular ethernet cable can't see any network. The Win7 PC says there's no cable connected. Any ideas? Is there some kind of setting you have to enable with the Airport utility? I looked everywhere but can't find anything. Thanks!
