  • How to use an RPM option in a yum upgrade?

    I need to upgrade an RPM installed via YUM, which has an fatal bug in its postun section. This will get run (and delete the program's user, which is what I want to not happen) when I run "yum upgrade". I know that if I were using rpm directly, I could just use the "-nopostun" option to skip this section, but I don't see a way of accessing that option from yum's man page. Anyone know a way round this?

  • Windows 8.1 Upgrade: I have to run everything as administrator now?

    I was running Windows 8 x64 Professional before and I never had to run programs as administrator to get them to function fully. Examples: Chrome OpenVPN GUI I always have my user under the local "Administrators" group and also disable UAC by putting the slider for it at the very bottom. This always did the trick. After the Windows 8.1 upgrade, I run into a few issues: Running Chrome normally, the Chrome icon doesn't appear in the taskbar. Chrome won't run in the background. OpenVPN GUI has errors when launching. Running both as administrator (Right Click Run as Administrator) fixes those issues and they run perfectly. What has changed in Windows 8.1 upgrade to cause these "problems"? I'm an advanced user, I don't want to have to worry about administrative rights. Any advice on how to fix these problems? EDIT I also get prompted for administrator permission to delete directories under "Program Files" now... that never used to happen before. I can hit Continue and it will allow me to delete, but just another symptom of the problem...

  • dpkg stuck downloading font files

    I have been reinstalling Ubuntu 12.04. The install from USB works fine, and I could update everything OK, but when I got to re-installing my application software I hit a snag. One of the packages I tried to re-install was ttf-mscorefonts-installer. dpkg stalled during this setup, downloading a font file (it had tried to download it all night). I stopped dpkg, and attempted to re-start downloading something else, but it would not let me. The commands I typed are as follows: bob@bobStudio:~$ sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/lock This unlocks dpkg, but if I try to do something I get the following message (eg): bob@bobStudio:~$ sudo apt-get install synaptic E: dpgk was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem So, I did just that: bob@bobStudio:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -a whereupon it started the previously failed download all over again. Is this download really broken, or is it 'just' a bad Internet connection?

    Since upgrade from Quantal to raring i am not recieving any updates. For example firefox package - I have version 17 installed and apt-get update && apt-get upgrade does not find updates.     I was trying to install kde-full when the libc had some unmet dependencies error. When saying sudo apt-get install kde-full the terminal has this in the end libc6 : Depends: libc-bin (= 2.15-0ubuntu10) libc6:i386 : Depends: libc-bin:i386 (= 2.15-0ubuntu10) libc6-dev : Depends: libc6 (= 2.15-0ubuntu10.3) but 2.15-0ubuntu10 is to be installed libc6-i386 : Depends: libc6 (= 2.15-0ubuntu10.3) but 2.15-0ubuntu10 is to be installed When running sudo apt-get -f install, this shows up at the end De-configuring libc6:i386 ...     I'm having difficulty trying to install/uninstall applications in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I have this warning error that appears on my desktop in the form of a red icon with a line through it and it states: An error occurred, please run Package Manager from the right-click menu or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong. The error message was: 'Error: BrokenCount 0' — This usually means that your installed packages have unmet dependencies. I tried to repair automatically through ubuntu software center and I kept getting errors or it just didn't seem to work. Afterwards, I opened terminal and used sudo apt-get check command to see what the problem was and the results yielded: Reading package lists... However, despite the lack of Fusion Middleware specific new features in version 4.28, Remote Diagnostic Agent still comes as highly recommended. It is incredibly useful problem solving / troubleshooting aid. Support engineers dealing with Service Requests often request RDA output as it collects just about everything you might need to get a view of the state and configuration of the host operating system, network setup and Fusion Middleware components. To find out more take a look at Running RDA Against Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g [ID 853437.1] Getting Started With Remote Diagnostic Agent: Case Study - Oracle WebLogic Server (Video) [ID 1262157.1] Note: While the latter document looks at RDA from the perspective of WebLogic Server, much of the advice given in the videos can be applied to other Fusion Middleware products.Ok, let's get back on track with the topic suggested by the title. If you are already familiar with Remote Diagnostic Agent you may ask the question - 'How do I keep my RDA at the latest version?' The most simplest and reliable way to upgrade your RDA installation is delete or move your old installation to a new location. Then install the new release into the location you had the prior release installed. If you want to reuse you old setup.cfg file, you can place the older version into the new <rda> directory and it will try to upgrade your setup.cfg to the new features. A second approach is to install the latest RDA into another directory, then if needed copy the old setup.cfg file to the new RDA directory.     It's no secret at all that IE6 has been a major roadblock to the advancement of the web over the last few years. I couldn't count the number of hours I've spent bashing my head against a wall trying to fix or debug IE6 issues. The way I see it, there are two types of IE6 user. a) the poor corporate schmoe whose IT department doesn't want to upgrade in case something breaks, and b) the mums and dads of the world who think the internet is the blue E on their desktop (and I don't mean that in a nasty way). There's probably a couple of people who know about all the other browsers, but still choose to run IE6. They get what they deserve, IMO. Anyway, getting to the point, I'd say that 90% of my IE6-using visitors are in the the mums and dads category - they're not stupid, they just don't know WHY they should upgrade to IE7 or Firefox or whatever. How do I educate these people without pissing them off? Is there a nice and friendly website I can direct these people to, which explains the reasons for upgrading in plain language? Any mention of "security" or "web standards" I think would just come across as scary. I've just seen http://www.whatbrowser.org which seems to fit the bill nicely. It explains in very basic terms: what a web browser is why you'd want to upgrade it how old your current browser is (subtle hint to those with a 9 year old browser) ..aaaand it's in 22 languages. It's from Google but displays no bias (it links to Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari, Internet Explorer displayed in a random order).

  • Why Can't Businesses Upgrade their Browsers from IE6/IE7?

    I have read lots these past few weeks on IE6, seeing if it was really that bad to make it look right. I have just learned HTML and CSS this past year so I've been spoiled to start with basically CSS3 and HTML5, and I can do some really cool stuff super fast. I'm no IE6 master and I don't have years of experience with IE. So I thought it'd take a little time to figure out all the hacks to IE6/7 discovered and just implement them. But it's way harder than that (or maybe just way too much work). I'd have to either completely rebuild my design using "Internet Explorer 'Principles'", or cut out a lot of the neat things I could do using more recent technologies. For a million and one other reasons, everyone who builds things online seems to think IE should die. My question is, why can't businesses upgrade their browsers? When I work with businesses, they almost always resist the first time I ask, but 5 seconds later I'll show them what it looks like on my computer and talk about how great the latest stuff is (how much more secure later browser are, all the famous IE security cases, how much smoother and faster they new browsers are, how the IE team has basically missed the boat entirely, how much smoother business processes run, etc.), and they get excited! And within a few seconds they're up and running with Chrome or something. So can businesses not upgrade for some reasons? What are the reasons a business cannot upgrade? The main reason I think of is because they have an old version of windows. But a) wasn't there a legal case against this? and b) somebody must have figured out how to install Chrome or Firefox on ancient versions of Windows by now.

  • Automatic Hudson CI setup and plugin updates through apt?

    Hi! We've used Hudson for quite a while to implement a CI server with all the bells and whistles. The setup is quite straight forward, when installing from the provided RPMs and Debs, but through googling I haven't been able to figure out whether the plugins are installable using apt/rpm or some other package manager? The reason is that I would like to create a (meta)package for Ubuntu which would install and also update both Hudson and all the plugins through the normal upgrade mechanism. At the same time I could create a template setup for other projects, say JavaEE project needs git, cobertura and Chuck Norris plugins, while my Python project needs plugins XXX and YYY. Anybody got such a setup? As a workaround I figured setting up a number of Maven POMs, which would do the init, and later upgrades, but I feel this would require more scripting on the side, which I'm not very eager to do. Any other suggestions for this would also be appreciated.

How do I upgrade XBMC Live 9.04.1 to 9.11? I understand that Ctrl+Shift+F2 brings up the command line, but what are the next set of commands to run?

  • Cannot reinstall Windows on Toughbook CF-19, OEM or upgrade issue?

    My Toughbook (CF-19) has a 'Windows Vista Business OEMAct, Panasonic' COA on the bottom of the unit. When I extracted the key before reformatting - it was a 'Windows XP Professional' Product Name and the Product ID code has 'OEM' in it...and I can confirm this upgrade was last OS installed (w/ Service Pack 3) - but there was the tablet functionality. This extracted product key isn't working with any version of Windows I try installing. XP Pro, XP Pro Tablet 2005 OEM, Tablet XP OEM. Any insights?

  • Trying to upgrade SQL Server 2008 to R2 but SQL is sleeping or dead?

    I've used the option to upgrade SQL Server 2008 to R2 but I noticed it gets to about 20-30% and it just sits on this screen: I've left it alone for over 2 hours, the PC is definately not frozen cause I can click the help or move the window around but it says "Install_sql_common_core_loc_Cpu64_1033_action: Install Files. Copying new files" for the past 2 hours. I have tried to do the install from a CD as well as a network drive, both with the same issue. Is there anything I can check or do ?
