  • In Excel 2010, how can I show a count of occurrences on a specific date within multiple time ranges?

    Here's what I'm trying to do. I have three columns of data. ID, Date(MM/DD/YY), Time(00:00). I need to create a chart or table that shows the number of occurrences on, say, 12/10/2010 between 00:00 and 00:59, 1:00 and 1:59, etc, for each hour of the day. I can do countif and get results for the date, but I cannot figure out how to show a summary of the count of occurrences per hour for the 24 hour period. I have months of data and many times each day. Example of data set is below. Any help is greatly ID Date Time 221 12/10/2010 00:01 223 12/10/2010 00:45 227 12/10/2010 01:13 334 12/11/2010 14:45 I would like the results to read: Date Time Count 12/10/2010 00:00AM - 00:59AM 2 12/10/2010 01:00AM - 01:59AM 1 12/10/2010 02:00AM - 02:59AM 0 ......(continues for every hour of the day) 12/11/2010 00:00AM - 00:59AM 0 ......... 12/11/2010 14:00PM - 14:59PM 1 And so on. Sorry for the length but I wanted to be clear. EDIT Here is a sample spreadsheet. Very little data, but I couldn't figure out a better way without having a huge file. Tested in notepad for formatting and worked ok on import as csv.   • What sort of schema can I use to accommodate manual date based data entries?

    I have an admin where users from multiple properties can enter in monthly statistics for twitter/facebook followers. We do not have access to the real data/db so this is why a manual entry. The form looks like this: Type ( radio, select **one** only ): - Twitter - Facebook Followers/Fans ( textfield ): Property (dropdown): Hotel A, Hotel B Date Start: mm/dd/yyyy (textfield) Date End: mm/dd/yyyy (textfield) Question 1.1: Since I am only keeping track of month per month, the date start/end fields which I have already created might be too specific. Would it be a better idea just to have a start month/year and and month/year if that's the only thing I care about? Question 1.2: What schema could I use for month to month statistics if I were to change the date start and end textfields to start month/year and end month/year dropdowns?

    Ultimately I'm going to convert this into a Hibernate/JPA design. But I wanted to start out from purely a database perspective. We have various tables containing data that is future-effective-dated. Take an employee table with the following pseudo-definition: employee id INT AUTO_INCREMENT ... data fields ... effectiveFrom DATE effectiveTo DATE employee_reviews id INT AUTO_INCREMENT employee_id INT FK employee.id Very simplistic. But let's say Employee A has id = 1, effectiveFrom = 1/1/2011, effectiveTo = 1/1/2099. That employee is going to be changing jobs in the future, which would in theory create a new row, id = 2 with effectiveFrom = 7/1/2011, effectiveTo = 1/1/2099, and id = 1's effectiveTo updated to 6/30/2011. But now, my program would have to go through any table that has a FK relationship to employee every night, and update those FK to reference the newly-effective employee entry. I have seen various postings in both pure SQL and Hibernate forums that I should have a separate employee_versions table, which is where I would have all effective-dated data stored, resulting in the updated pseudo-definition below: employee id INT AUTO_INCREMENT employee_versions id INT AUTO_INCREMENT employee_id INT FK employee.id ... data fields ... effectiveFrom DATE effectiveTo DATE employee_reviews id INT AUTO_INCREMENT employee_id INT FK employee.id Then to get any actual data, one would have to actually select from employee_versions with the proper employee_id and date range. This feels rather unnatural to have this secondary "versions" table for each versioned entity. Anyone have any opinions, suggestions from your own prior work, etc? Like I said, I'm taking this purely from a general SQL design standpoint first before layering in Hibernate on top. Thanks!

    How do you sum a variable range of cells based upon today's date in MS Excel 2003. Spreadsheet format: Variable range = # of days to sum Date range = listed in row 1, 1 day per cell (example A1=1/1/10, B1=1/2/10, C1=1/3/10....) Numbers to be summed - listed in row 2, X number per cell (example A2=8, B2=6, C2=1.....) example problem: IF variable range = 2 & Current Date = 1/2/10 then...Sum(b2:c2)=7 I am able to sum the entire row based upon current date using the following formula but am not able to add the variable range to the sum function. =SUMIF(A1:C1,"="&TODAY(),A2:C2)

    I often find myself storing data in a mysql database, and then wanting to display all sorts of stats about my data, specifically stuff like 'how many rows do I have for this date, or that date'. Does anyone know of (or could write) a good tutorial on this subject? Ideally a good tutorial would overview: Best practices when storing the data (i.e. what formats to use, how to use them servertime vs. generated time, etc.) Best practices when selecting data from the database with php (i.e. how to sort rows by date, how to retrieve only rows from a certain date, or a certain hour, etc).. Timezones and other issues that might come up. Thanks in advance.

    I need to convert a date and time into a timestamp with php. The following code shows what I'm currently using: <?php $date="2012-06-29 10:50"; $timestamp = strtotime($date); echo $timestamp; ?> However, when I test the timestamp in an online convertor (http://www.epochconverter.com), the resulting date is 29th June 2012, 8:50, or 2 hours previous. Is it possible that the strtotime() function isn't completely accurate and is just an estimate of the time? If so, are there better methods I could use for getting the exact time? Thanks.

    BACKGROUND: I am of the "user-input-lockdown" school of thought. Whenever possible, I try to mistrust and sanitize user input, both client side and server side; and I try to take multiple opportunities to restrict possible inputs to a known subset of possibilities, usually this means providing a lot of checkboxes and select lists. (This is from the usability side of things, I know security-wise that malicious users can easily bypass fixed user input GUI controls). PROBLEM: Anyway, the problem always arises with non-fixed input of currency. Whenever I have to accept a freely-specified dollar amount as user input, I always have to confront these problems/annoyances and it is always painful: 1) Make sure to give the user two input boxes for each currency_datapoint, one for the whole_dollar_part and another for the fractional_pennies_part 2) Whenever the user changes a currency_datapoint, provide keystroke-by-keystroke GUI feedback to let them know whether the currency_datapoint is well-formed, with context-appropriate validation rules (e.g., no negatives?, nonzero only?, numeric only!, no non-numeric punctuation! no symbols!) 3) For display purposes, every user-provided currency_datapoint should be translated to human-readable currency formatting (dollar sign, period, commas provided by the app, where appropriate) 4) For calculation purposes, every user-provided currency_datapoint has to be converted to integer (all pennies, to avoid floating point errors) and summed into a grand total with zero or more subtotals. 5) Every user-provided currency_datapoint should be displayed or displayable in a nice "tabular" format, which auto-updates as the user enters each currency_datapoint, including a baloon that warns when one or more currency_datapoints is not well-formed. I seem to be re-inventing this wheel every time I have to work with currency in Javascript on the client side (server side is a bit more flexible since most programming languages have higher-level currency formatting logic). QUESTION: Has anyone out there solved the problem of dealing with the above issues, client side, in a way that is server-side-technology-stack agnostic, (preferrably plain javascript or jquery)? This is getting old, there has to be a better way.

    Hi guys, I am implementing Naive Bayesian classifier for spam filtering. I have doubt on some calculation. Please clarify me what to do. Here is my question. In this method, you have to calculate P(S|W) - Probability that Message is spam given word W occurs in it. P(W|S) - Probability that word W occurs in a spam message. P(W|H) - Probability that word W occurs in a Ham message. So to calculate P(W|S), should I do (1) (Number of times W occuring in spam)/(total number of times W occurs in all the messages) OR (2) (Number of times word W occurs in Spam)/(Total number of words in the spam message) So, to calculate P(W|S), should I do (1) or (2)? (I thought it to be (2), but I am not sure, so plz clarify me) I am refering http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayesian_spam_filtering for the info by the way. In the your approach it wouldn't, right?. Lets take a scenario and discuss... Lets say, we have 100 training messages, out of which 50 are spam and 50 are Ham. and say word_count of each message = 100. And lets say, in spam messages word W occurs 5 times in each message and word W occurs 1 time in Ham message. So total number of times W occuring in all the spam message = 5*50 = 250 times. And total number of times W occuring in all Ham messages = 1*50 = 50 times. Total occurance of W in all of the training messages = (250+50) = 300 times. So, in this scenario, how do u calculate P(W|S) and P(W|H) ? Naturally we should expect, P(W|S) P(W|H)??? right. Please share your thought...

  • How to keep SpamAssassin up to date under CentOS?

    I am running CentOS 5.4 with SpamAssassin installed via yum. However the version yum installed was SpamAssassin version 3.2.5 and I am finding that this version has many outdated rules -- including a rule FH_DATE_PAST_20XX which marks all email from the year 2010 and forward as spam. Not good. yum says SpamAssassin is up to date -- what can I do to make yum keep SpamAssassin really up to date?

  • Why do some emails sent in Outlook 2010 get stuck in Outbox with date set to "None"?

    I'm using Outlook 2010 against Exchange 2007. Emails I compose sometimes get stuck in the Outbox with date "None" as shown below. These emails never leave the outbox unless I delete them and recompose. Sometimes the problem happens again until I restart the client. Additionally, if I open a good (one with today's date) email from the outbox and then send it, it too gets dated "None" and never gets sent.

I've got the below script so far which gives me all the files older than a certain date and lists the directory and who owns them: $date=get-date $age=$date.AddDays(-30) ls '\\server\share\folder' -File -Recurse | ` where {$_.lastwritetime -lt "$age"} | ` select-object $_.fullname,{(Get-ACL $_.FullName).Owner} | ` ft -AutoSize However, when I try and use an additional where parameter to select only files owned by a certain user, I get no results at all, even though I know I should, based on the match I'm trying to obtain (as below): $date=get-date $age=$date.AddDays(-30) ls '\\server\share\folder' -File -Recurse | ` where ({$_.lastwritetime -lt "$age"} -and {{(get-acl $_.FullName).owner} -eq "domain\user"}) | ` select-object $_.fullname,{(Get-ACL $_.FullName).Owner} | ` ft -AutoSize Am I missing something?     I know how to add it via the context menu, but it never seems to be a permanent option. I would like it to show in all folders without having to continually go back through and add it. How can I make Windows Explorer show file modified date instead of created date? I've looked at this question, so I assume it is the same as going through the context menu seen by right clicking inside the folder.

    In EXCEL 2010 I am trying to querying data in another spreadsheet. The data range in the source sheet/ file is named (DATABASE). The Date field in the database is formatted as short date and when I query the date without criteria I get a different format of European datesYYYY-MM-DD with time in the results. When I use criteria and a specific date in the date field criteria grid using English format MM-DD-YYYY I get results. When I set parameters looking at destination file cells for the date for the parameters, I get Type mismatch EVEN THOUGHT THE CELLS ARE Short date Formatted. This worked perfectly in my 2003 version of EXCEL. Now I am running Win 7 -64 and Office 2010 Pro. Why does the query throw Mismatch with cell references for the parameters but accepts hard value dates in any date format? (MSQRY32.EXE)

I want to be able to do custom type conversions so that my application can do a simple String to Date conversion. Enter the metaMethod.     I have been working with decision tables for some time but have never had a scenario where I need to compare dates. The use case was to check if a persons membership had expired. I didn't think much of it till I started to develop it. The first trap I feel into was trying to create ranges and bucket sets. The other trap I fell into was not converting the date field to a complete date. This may seem obvious to most people but my Google searches came up with nothing so I thought I would create a quick post. I assume everyone knows how to create a decision table so I'm not going to go through those steps. The prerequisite for this post is to have a decision table with a payload that has a date field. This filed must have the date in the following format YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:ss. Create a new condition in your decision table Right-click on the condition to edit it and select the expression builder In the expression builder, select the Functions tab. Expand the CurrentDate file and select date, and click Insert Into Expression button. In the Expression Builder you need to create an expression that will return true or false, add the operation <= after the CurrentDate.date In my scenario my date field is memberExpire, Navigate to your date field and expand, select toGregorianCalendar(). Your expression will look something like this, click OK to get back to the decision table Now its just a matter of checking if the value is true or false. Simple when you know how :-)

    I am trying to implement a generic scheduler object in C# 4 which will output a table in HTML. Basic aim is to show some object along with various attributes, and whether it was doing something in a given time period. The scheduler will output a table displaying the headers: Detail Field 1 ....N| Date1.........N I want to initialise the table with a start date and an end date to create the date range (ideally could also do other time periods e.g. hours but that isn't vital). I then want to provide a generic object which will have associated events. Where an object has events within the period I want a table cell to be marked E.g. Name Height Weight 1/1/2011 2/1/2011 3/1/20011...... 31/1/2011 Ben 5.11 75 X X X Bill 5.7 83 X X So I created scheduler with Start Date=1/1/2011 and end date 31/1/2011 I'd like to give it my person object (already sorted) and tell it which fields I want displayed (Name, Height, Weight) Each person has events which have a start date and end date. Some events will start and end outwith but they should still be shown on the relevant date etc. Ideally I'd like to have been able to provide it with say a class booking object as well. So I'm trying to keep it generic. I have seen Javasript implementations etc of similar. What would a good data structure be for this? Any thoughts on techniques I could use to make it generic. I am not great with generics so any tips appreciated.

Well, you could try the following Query ( T-SQL ):   SELECT convert(varchar(10),LogDB.Date,121) as Datum, LogDB.Level, LogDB.Logger,COUNT(LogDB.Logger) as Counter From Log4Net.dbo.Log as LogDB  where Level <> 'DEBUG' AND convert(varchar(10),LogDB.Date,121) like '2010-03-25' GROUP BY convert(varchar(10),LogDB.Date,121),LogDB.Level,LogDB.Logger ORDER BY counter desc This query will give you the number of events by the Logger at a specified date - and it's easy to customize, just adjust the Date and the Level to your needs. You need a bit more information than that? How about this query:  Select  convert(varchar(10),LogDB.Date,121) as Datum,LogDB.Level,LogDB.Message,LogDB.Logger ,count(LogDB.Message) as counter From Log4Net.dbo.Log as LogDB where Level <> 'DEBUG' AND convert(varchar(10),LogDB.Date,121) like '2010-03-25' GROUP BY convert(varchar(10),LogDB.Date,121),LogDB.Level,LogDB.Message,LogDB.Logger ORDER BY counter desc Similar to the first one, but inclusive the Message - which will return a much larger resultset.

  • Opening images sorted by modification date/size/type/etc.

    Suppose I have a folder with pictures in them. If I sort them by name once I open one with Image Viewer and navigate to the others the order is respected. But if I sort my files by modification date, for example, I can't do that. Basically, the default Image Viewer only lets you navigate images by name. According to this post on the ubuntuforums this has been an issue since 2007! Is there a good/easy way to fix it? Seems like such a trivial thing to me.
