    I'm currently developing a support system for a university. The system is written in PHP and I would like to be able to get a current list of software and basic computer information on a computer. Basically when one of the faculty or staff creates a ticket from our web interface, I would like to have a Java Applet or similar that could be run and would return the information to the help desk PHP script.   • Sparse (Pseudo) Infinite Grid Data Structure for Web Game

    I'm considering trying to make a game that takes place on an essentially infinite grid. The grid is very sparse. Certain small regions of relatively high density. Relatively few isolated nonempty cells. The amount of the grid in use is too large to implement naively but probably smallish by "big data" standards (I'm not trying to map the Internet or anything like that) This needs to be easy to persist. Here are the operations I may want to perform (reasonably efficiently) on this grid: Ask for some small rectangular region of cells and all their contents (a player's current neighborhood) Set individual cells or blit small regions (the player is making a move) Ask for the rough shape or outline/silhouette of some larger rectangular regions (a world map or region preview) Find some regions with approximately a given density (player spawning location) Approximate shortest path through gaps of at most some small constant empty spaces per hop (it's OK to be a bad approximation often, but not OK to keep heading the wrong direction searching) Approximate convex hull for a region Here's the catch: I want to do this in a web app. That is, I would prefer to use existing data storage (perhaps in the form of a relational database) and relatively little external dependency (preferably avoiding the need for a persistent process). Guys, what advice can you give me on actually implementing this? How would you do this if the web-app restrictions weren't in place? How would you modify that if they were? Thanks a lot, everyone!

Does anyone know of a file manager that meets the following criteria? The file manager must… …be embeddable (e.g. Flash or a Java applet) …run from my server (no storing uploads in a remote location) …be licensed for business use (fees are okay) …let me disable uploads. Users shouldn't be able to upload files, only download them …allow me to tag files and/or place them in folders …let me disable authentication or handle it from the backend.   • VS2010 setting open files to read only on save

    I'm editing a Visual Studio 2010 web application. When saving changes to a code-behind file, the file becomes read only in the editor for 1-2 minutes. Closing and re-opening the file makes it editable again. As I save quite frequently, this can be a pain. Has anyone else run into this issue, and know any work-arounds?

    hi there, I have developed a windows application using C# VS 2008 and Sql 2005 express, i have testes the application on my machine and it works fine, my machine is win32 bit, when i tried the application on windows 64bit it keeps giving me an error message on the start of the application,although i installed the sql express on that machine but should i install .NETframwork3.5sp1 64 bit also? , the target machine is widows 7 64bit, also is there a technology or a way to make the application work in the following sequence: 1- the CD is auto run 2- the setup checks for the installed prerequists and install any necessery one without the interference of the user. one last question,should i rebuild the application on an 64 bit machine to make it work on 64 bit machine? thankx

    I have stripes:link tag in a jsp with an event attribute: <stripes:link href="${actionBean.context.currentStage.stripesForwardAction}" addSourcePage="true" event="showTab2Link"> This triggers the validation to trigger on nested properties: @ValidateNestedProperties({ @Validate(field="county", required=true, minlength=2, maxlength=2, mask="\\d\\d"), @Validate(field="parish", required=true, minlength=3, maxlength=3, mask="\\d\\d\\d"), @Validate(field="holding", required=true, minlength=4, maxlength=4, mask="\\d\\d\\d\\d") }) However this would been fine if the actual values it is validation are not present, but they are present within the html and when debugging the bean. Why would the stripes:link trigger this? If I change it to an stripes:submit then it is fine. thanks, Dave

  • Error message when running a Sinatra application on Windows Vista.

    I was following a video tutorial by Adam Keys about how to make a URL shortener app in Sinatra. The code that is giving me problems is located here http://pastie.org/958644 So when I ran it I got this error: shortener.rb:12: syntax error, unexpected $undefined, expecting $end @@ home I typed it exactly as Adam said but this keeps happening. What could the issue be? By the way, I am running ruby 1.9.1p243 (2009-07-16 revision 24175) [i386-mingw32] on Windows Vista. Thanks, Adam

    When using some existing forum software in a larger web-site, how easy is it to: 1)Make your site's login functionality log the user into the forum 2)Make your site's registration functionality create forum login data I suppose in a way it might be easier to ONLY use the forum's database for maintaining users, but that means trusting it with sensitive data. I'm planning an integration between an existing bespoke desktop app and a new bespoke web-site which should include forums. I don't know which forums will be used but I know the new web functionality won't be PHP-based. I figure that's not a big deal but I'm wondering if forums typically allow configuration of where they look for login data, to avoid duplicating this data into my DB and the forum DB.

    I have Controller having multiple @RequestMapping annotations in it. @Controller public class SignUpController { @RequestMapping("signup") public String showSignUp() throws Exception { return "somejsp"; } @RequestMapping("fullSignup") public String showFullSignUp() throws Exception { return "anotherjsp"; } @RequestMapping("signup/createAccount") public String createAccount() throws Exception { return "anyjsp"; } } How can I map these @RequestMapping to case insensitive. i.e. if I use "/fullsignup" or "/fullSignup" I should get "anotherjsp". But this is not happening right now. Only "/fullSignup" is working fine.

  • What tech stack/platform to use for a project?

    Hey guys, This is a bit of a weird meta-programming question, but I've realized that my new project doesn't need a full MVC framework, and being a rails guy, I'm not sure what to use now. To give you a gist of the necessary functionality; this website will display static pages, but users will be able to log in and 'edit their current plans'. All purchasing and credit card editing is being handled by a recurring payment subscriber, I just need a page to edit their current plan. All of that will be done through (dynamic) XML API calls, so no database is necessary. Should I stick with my typical rails/nginx stack, or is there something I could use that would lighten the load, since I don't need the Rails heft. I'm familiar with python and PHP but would prefer not to go that route. Is Sinatra a good choice here? tl;dr: What's a good way to quickly serve mostly static pages, preferably in Ruby, with some pages requiring dynamic XML rendering?

    Hi there, I know this is a weird question to ask, but I would like to know if there is any documentation/blog-article out there that explains the architecture of a Website content management system? More particularly, I am interested to learn more about how "widgets" are implemented. I can't remember which system it was that I've seen tis one, but in the "Page Layout view" it had the ability to allow the end user to select a widget (thumbnail gallery, contact form, etc) from a list, and drag and drop it onto custom areas of the page.     Mhh, kinda hard to explain with my poor english ;) So, lets say I have an image, doesnt matter what kind of (gif, jpg, png) with 200x200 pixel size (total area 40000 pixels) This image have a background, that can be trasparent, or every color (but i know the background-color in advance). Lets say that in the middle of this image, there is a picture (for keep the example simple lets suppose is a square drawn), of 100x100 pixels (total area 10000 pixels). I need to know the area percentage that the small square fill inside the image. So, in i know the full image size and the background-color, there is a way in php/python to scan the image and retrieve that (in short, counting the pixel that are different from the given background)? In the above example, the result should be 25%

  • Asset tracking in "real-time" - how best to display in browser?

    I am developing an asset tracking system, standard LAMP, and now am wondering how best to present the data to the user in the browser. I expect to track and most a few thousand items, and to refresh them every second or so. I want to draw a floorplan or map of the area and represent the assets the assets symbolically on that (with different symbols for different classes of assets). Additionally, the user should be able to click on an asset to interact with it, and search for a particular asset and centre the screen on it, draw a circle round it, etc http://graphite.wikidot.com/ Looks good - is there any alternative? At its simplest, I suppose I could just generate a JPEG and display it, using CSS to let me know if/where a user clicks ... but what's the "best" way to do it?
