  I'm thinking, why does the web have to be so colorful. meaning, all the information is buried deep beneath layers of flash, javascripts, html and images. Sure, a good positioning of these media files, create an aesthetic value but how important is it to the user ? moreover, aren't people looking for information after all ? why can't the internet be a uniform looking data warehouse ? now we've gotta digg through all the aesthetic junk, using shady web scraping techniques, unless RSS or API is provided. why can't we settle for just a dull grey button and framesets for navigation ? why can't all sites have navigation frame on the left and top ? why can't all sites put their damn data always in normalized table tag ?

  Running my app through callgrind revealed that this line dwarfed everything else by a factor of about 10,000. I'm probably going to redesign around it, but it got me wondering; Is there a better way to do it? Here's what I'm doing at the moment: int i = 1; while ( ( (*(buffer++) == 0xffffffff && ++i) || (i = 1) ) && i < desiredLength + 1 && buffer < bufferEnd ); It's looking for the offset of the first chunk of desiredLength 0xffffffff values in a 32 bit unsigned int array. It's significantly faster than any implementations I could come up with involving an inner loop. But it's still too damn slow.

• Android emulator-5554 offline

  I'm having a problem with emulator-5554, it keeps telling me it is offline. When I do a 'adb devices' from the command line it says emulator-5554 offline Even after a fresh restart, I try that command and it still says it is offline. The problem is when I try to install .apk files to the emulator using 'abd install path' from the command prompt, it tells me that it is offline, if I create another device and run that one, then try to install the .apk files, it says i have too many devices connected. So in other words, I can't install my .apk files. How in the world can I get rid of that damn emulator-5554? I heard that if you do a restart, it should clear all the devices, but that does not seem to be working. It is like it is getting initialized when my computer starts up. Has anyone run into this issue? Thanks

• Which Java Web Framework allows Cross-Domain Javascripting (http proxy) ?

  So just a quick intro, I am starting to explore Vaadin, and it's absolutely perfect. Previously, I was juggling PHP, Perl, Ruby, and Jquery for designing rich client web application. It didn't work out too well, as I've burnt out from trying to fix cross browser issues (aka get-it-to-work-on-IE-damn-it), handling server-side, client-side, and building a robust communication between the two tier had lot of code not related to application logic....by the time I was burnt out, only tiny bit of application logic was implemented. Vaadin seems like the answer to my problem as it only requires Java and built on top of GWT. However, I am curious how I can incorporate Cross-Domain Javascripting ? Back in LAMP environment, I had a CGI proxy script that loaded external URL, and injected JS into the proxy-loaded page. I used the CGI proxy script, as it rendered Javascript of the external URL well. Is there a class or package for Java or a specific Java web framework similiar to Vaadin that makes this possible ?   Hi guys, i've a huge problem. Take a look to this sample code private sub FUNCTION1() dim conn as new mysqlconnection(myconnstring) conn.open ---- do something FUNCTION2() ---- conn.close end sub private sub FUNCTION2() dim conn as new mysqlconnection(myconnstring) .... conn.open -- do something conn.close end sub Despite i close regulary all my connection, they remains "open" on the mysql server. I know this because i'm using MySQL Administration tool to check how many connection i open "line by line" of my source code. In fact i get a lot of time "user has exceeded the 'max_user_connections' resource (current value: 5)" My hoster permit ONLY 5 connection, but i think that if i write GOOD source code, this cannot be a problem. So my question is: why that "damn" connections remain open ?? Thank you in advance!

  So I'm developing a PHP/MySQL based CMS which requires PHP 5.1 and MySQL 5.0 (with InnoDB support) at least. I'm now wondering what features of MySQL I can safely use without noticing one day that "Oh, well, that crappy hoster has disabled feature X, damn, now I'm screwed." So my question is, which of these features can become problematic (= can be disabled, require special configuration, require user privilege): transactions and FKs in InnoDB (of course unavailable to MyISAM) table locking (MyISAM and InnoDB) stored procedures I just want to know once and for all what's the minimal feature set I can expect from MySQL.

• Is there a unique computer identifier that can be used reliably even in a virtual machine?

  I'm writing a small client program to be run on a terminal server. I'm looking for a way to make sure that it will only run on this server and in case it is removed from the server it will not function. I understand that there is no perfect way of securing it to make it impossible to ran on other platforms, but I want to make it hard enough to prevent 95% of people to try anything. The other 5% who can hack it is not my concern. I was looking at different Unique Identifiers like Processor ID, Windows Product ID, Computer GUID and other UIs. Because the terminal server is a virtual machine, I cannot locate anything that is completely unique to this machine. Any ideas on what I should look into to make this 95% secure. I do not have time or the need to make it as secure as possible because it will defeat the purpose of the application itself. I do not want to user MAC address. Even though it is unique to each machine it can be easily spoofed. As far as Microsoft Product ID, because our system team clones VM servers and we use corporate volume key, I found already two servers that I have access to that have same Product ID Number. I have no Idea how many others out there that have same Product ID By 95% and 5% I just simply wanted to illustrate how far i want to go with securing this software. I do not have precise statistics on how many people can do what. I believe I might need to change my approach and instead of trying to identify the machine, I will be better off by identifying the user and create group based permission for access to this software.

• Powershell wait for file to delete, then copy a folder

  Morning guys, I have a couple of scripts that have to sync a folder from the network server, to the local terminal server, and lastly into the %LOCALAPPDATA%. I need to first check if a folder is being synced (this is done by creating a temporary COPYING.TXT on the server), and wait until that is removed, THEN copy to %LOCALAPPDATA%. Something like this: Server-side script executes, which syncs my folder to all of my terminal servers. It creates a COPYING.TXT temporary file, which indicates the sync is in progress. Once the sync is finished, the script removes the COPYING.TXT If someone logs on during the sync, I need a script to wait until the COPYING.TXT is deleted I.E the sync is finished, then resume the local sync into their %LOCALAPPDATA%. do{cp c:\folder\program $env:LOCALAPPDATA} while(!(test-path c:\folder\COPYING.txt)) (So that copies the folder while the file DOESN'T exist, but I don't think that exits cleanly) I cannot format the above as code for some reason I'm sorry? Or: while(!(test-path c:\folder\COPYING.txt)){ cp c:\folder\program $env:LOCALAPPDATA\ -recurse -force if (!(test-path c:\folder\program)){return} } But that script quits if the COPYING.TXT exists. I think I need to create a function and insert that function within itself, or a nested while loop, but that is starting to make my head hurt. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

• Httpd + Expect Script Fail (no more ptys) if httpd is not run through cli

  I have a CentOS virtual server through Vmware. The server runs an httpd daemon which serves an php page with a form. The users complete the form, and by clicking submit the php page calls an expect scripts. If i run the httpd throught the default init.d script i get a "no more ptys" error, but if i run httpd through root terminal the script runs without problems. How can i make the httpd run the expect scripts without having to run the httpd daemon by hand.

• XRDP: window manager not starting

  I have setup my Ubuntu server so that I can connect and login to XRDP from Windows remote desktop. My problem is that after logging in, no window-manager is started. It only displays a single gnome-terminal with no border and gray meshed background. It seems that /usr/sbin/xrdp-sesman itself is running (from observation of ps and /var/run/xrdp/xrdp-sesman.pid). I put debugging line like touch /home/myname/aaaaa into ~/startwm.sh or /etc/xrdp/startwm.sh, but the file aaaaa did not generated after logging in, so these scripts have not been executed. (Both of them have chmod +x permission.) Am I missing some configuration file, or is there any way of further inspection? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.   I can't seem to locate recent commands I've run when I do Ctrl + R in my terminal, nor can I see them when I hit the up arrow. It was a long command. Is there a length limit to what is stored?   I am trying to create a hardlink on my C drive that points to a file on my D drive. I open up a terminal with Administrator privileges and try the following: C:\Users\sandro>mklink /H _vimrc D:\sandro-desktop\.vimrc The error that I get is: The system cannot move the file to a different disk drive. When I try a softlink I get the issue that for some reason changes to the link contents aren't reflected on the targeted file. Thank you!

• xterm window gets stuck after some time

  I am using xterm on RHEL with KDE. Usually after a couple of days, the xterm terminals get stuck i.e. I am not able to resize or relocate them. After this, even if I open a new terminal, it is stuck the same way. What I do is logout and login again. Is this a bug with xterm? Is there a known solution?

• Server 2008 slow home page load in Internet Explorer

  I have a problem with Internet Explorer for all users. On startup the home page takes around 20-30 seconds to load. This includes servers such as the Domain Controller and Terminal Server. However once the home page has loaded all pages from then on run fine. If you close and then reopen Internet Explorer the same thing happens. Any suggestions?

• How come gok doesn't do anything?

  I am using gok under Ubuntu 9.10. I type 'gok' in the terminal and a small window with 9 buttons comes up... However, clicking on them does nothing. How do I make this program work? Or is there a better on-screen-keyboard for Ubuntu?
