• /etc/exports file not read on boot

  I added some entries into my /etc/exports file. But when I boot my system, the file is not read. I check it by sudo exportfs — it returns nothing (also I can't mount the exported folders on other systems). Then I run sudo expotfs -a and then again sudo exportfs — and now all my exported folders are listed (and now I can mount the exported folders on other systems). I'm running kubuntu 9.04 with 2.6.28-11-generic kernel

• PHP 5.2 to 5.3 not upgrading, no errors

  I'm following this guide: http://atik97.wordpress.com/2010/06/12/how-to-upgrade-to-php-5-3-in-ubuntu-9-10/ I've done all the steps, but it's still showing php 5.2.6 - any ideas? • Does moving a file outside NTFS loose data in alertnate data streams?

  I have a lot of files on machine running Windows Server 2008 which I wanted to move to a Fedora machine. How can I keep the attributes stored in, for example, media files (date taken, rating, length, etc) while transfering it to outside the realm of NTFS's Alternate Data Streams. I'm aware that similar metadata exists in other file systems, but what happens when you move these files? And what's the best way to retain them in other file systems?

• Oracle automatic patch download

  I need to update/patch the firmware of a lot of Sun/Oracle systems quite frequently. To do that I first need to download the latest firmware snapshot by hand from Oracle's saggy and unsophisticated "My Oracle Support" (list of all firmware snapshots can be found at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/systems/patches/firmware/release-history-jsp-138416.html).   I would like to create a rule that moves anything with the words "SUCCESS * BenchmarResults", where the * indicates a wildcard to a specific folder. We have multiple systems that will be put in place of the *. We have emails that will return "WARNING * BenchmarkResults" that I don't want the rule applied to. I know I can create a seperate rule for each of our systems, but I want this rule to be dymanic where I can add new benchmark emails without creatting a new rule.

• Gmail Embed Image Icon

  I'm using the Gmail labs feature that allows me to embed images into emails. The feature works fine and when I send the email, I believe it actually does embed the image and the recipient sees it as such. But when I look in my sent box and bring up the email, instead of the embedded image, I see an icon in its place. Is this correct? Why is this like this? I want to be able to see the embedded image just like when the email was composed.

  What is the reason partitioning is usually a step in installing multiple (2) operating systems on the same computer? Does an operating system have to have it's own partition to run or can it run in the same partition as another operating system? (i.e. -can two of the same flavor run in the same partition but if you have one Linux and one windows it needs to be partitioned?) Is it necessary to make disk partitions to run multiple operating systems?

  I have swf files that are embedded in a PHP page using SWFObject. These swf files are in the same directory as my PHP files. for example www.myurl.com/index.php embeds www.myurl.com/flashfile.swf, index.php and flashfile.swf are in the same directory. However I want to prevent people from being able to type in www.myurl.com/flashfile.swf and viewing the swf. I want the browser to deny access to this file unless it has been embedded by the PHP file. Should I move my swfs to another folder and protect this folder somehow - is this with the .htaccess file? I am running Apache on a linux machine. While my main concern is for swf files I would like to protect graphics used on the site too. all help appreciated thanks

• postMessage to PDF in an iFrame

  Here's my situation. I had a webpage with an embedded PDF form. We used a basic object tag (embed in FF) to load the PDF file like this: <object id="pdfForm" height="100%" width="100%" type="application/pdf" data="..url"></object> On this webpage was an Html Save button that would trigger some Javascript which used the postMessage API of the embedded object to execute javascript embedded in the PDF. Basically, that code looked like this: function save() { sendMessage(["submitForm"]); } function sendMessage(aMessage) { pdfObject = document.getElementById("pdfForm"); if (typeof(pdfObject) == "undefined") return; if (typeof (pdfObject.postMessage) == "undefined") return; pdfObject.postMessage(aMessage); } This all was working beautifully. Except we ran into an issue with Firefox so that we need to embed the PDF using iFrame, instead of the object tag. So now, the PDF is embeded using this code: <iframe id="pdfWrapper" src="..someUrl" width="100%" height="800px" frameborder="0"></iframe> Unfortunately, with this code, the javascript for posting a message no longer works, and I can't really figure out how to get access to the pdf object anymore so that I can access the postMessage api. Using fiddler or the chome javascript debugger, it is clear that within the iframe, the browser is automatically generating an embed tag (not an object tag), but that does not let me access the postMessage API.   I just revisited the “Micro Framework”- Microsoft’s bootable runtime, essentially an OS that allows managed code to run on small 32bit CPUs, even without Memory Management.  Things are happening http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/netframework/bb267253.aspx Abstract The Microsoft .NET Micro Framework is a bootable runtime module that brings the advantages of .NET programming to devices too resource-constrained to run other Microsoft embedded platforms. The benefits of developing with the .NET Micro Framework include the C# programming language, a managed execution environment, a substantial subset of the .NET libraries, and Visual Studio™ deployment and debugging. In this white paper we explain why the .NET Micro Framework is an ideal choice for embedded development and provide technical details of the platform’s Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) and Common Language Runtime (CLR). “Micro Framework” is an interesting product, it is very low cost, like zero. And it is largely community controlled under the Apache License.  A partner network is building, and the application environment is .NET. I have been following this for some time, and the community open source approach seems to be working.  There are new features/packages emerging, for example an F# programming language (ARGH! I am still wresting with VB and C#). Anyway, what I found most interesting was a port to Tron.  Tron is a very popular Japanese open source intuitive.  It is a very real time, very compact kernel, and is, like the Micro Framework, ‘free as beer’.  One limit on MF was it was not real time.  But the merger with Tron may eliminate that problem.  Certainly, if I were dealing with a consumer product with quantities in the millions (like a SmartGrid device, or a toy) I would seriously consider something out of this technology pool.

Lets an assume an organization wants to upload training/product demo videos to YouTube and embed them on their corporate website.  Would not it be nice if they can hide the YouTube logo from the embedded videos? Definitely Yes. To remove the YouTube logo you need to do a small change to the embed script before using it on your site. Add the flag modestbranding=1 as shown in the script below Here is a YouTube video embedded in this post without the logo. The catch is when logo is hidden the player shows text YouTube as a text overlay at top right corner when you hover the mouse. Hope Google will let us hide even that in the near future. • problem installing mysql on ubuntu server 10.10 machine

  Hi, I tried installing mysql a couple of times and I'm having problems. First of all, when I install it gives me a message that it's setting up and it just hangs. I can't ctl + c out of it, so I reboot the server and try to log into the db with sudo mysql -u root -p I enter my password and then get ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) I restart the server: sudo /etc/init.d/mysql start Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service(8) utility, e.g. service mysql start Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an Upstart job, you may also use the start(8) utility, e.g. start mysql ~$ I try this: aptitude search mysql | grep ^i i A libdbd-mysql-perl - Perl5 database interface to the MySQL data i libmysql-java - Java database (JDBC) driver for MySQL i A libmysqlclient16 - MySQL database client library i mysql-client-5.1 - MySQL database client binaries i A mysql-client-core-5.1 - MySQL database core client binaries i mysql-common - MySQL database common files, e.g. /etc/mys i mysql-embedded - MySQL - embedded library i mysql-server-core-5.1 - MySQL database server binaries When I navigate to the folder to see if the *.sock file exists: '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' it does not. • How Do Nautilus Album Art Thumbnails work?

  There's something for which I've been searching an answer for a while now, but to no avail, and it's strange to me, as it seems like a thing that people would talk about: one of those nice little nonsense that enhance the computing experience a little bit. Anyway. I have a fair music collection. I save all the songs as ogg files. All is fine, and I can listen to the files, but there's something weird with the files in Nautilus: some have icons displaying their album art, while others don't, and I just can't understand WHY. I read on this site today that it's a matter of embedding the album art to the file, but that's not true, as I embedded the album art to the files I wanted several times, to no avail. Furthermore, removing an embedded album art from a file didn't have any effect on those that ARE displaying the icons. So my question is: How does it work? Where does Nautilus (or Ubuntu, I don't know) get the picture from? How do I edit it? Thanks in advance! -Amir

• Choosing the right language for the job

  I'm currently working for a company on the engineering team of about 5-6 people and have been given the job of heading up the redesign of an embedded system tester. We've decided the general requirements and attributes that would be desirable in the system, and now I have to decide on a language to use for the system, or at the very least come up with a list of languages with pros and cons to present to the team. The general idea of the project is that we currently have a tester written in c++, which was never designed to be a tester, but instead has evolved to be such over the course of 3-4 years due to need. Writing tests for a new product requires modifying the 'framework' and writing code that is completely non-human readable or intuitive due to the way the system was originally designed. Now, we've decided that the time to modify this tester for each new product that we want to test has become too high and want to partially re-write the system so that we can program the actual tests in a scripting language that would then use the modified c++ framework on the back end to test the actual systems. The c++ framework would be responsible for doing all the actual work and the scripting language would just integrate with that to tell the framework what to do. Never having programmed in a scripting language (we program embedded systems), I've run into a wall where I have no experience with any of the languages that we could possibly use, but must somehow give pros and cons of each language so that we can choose the best one for the job. Currently my short list of possibilities includes: Python TCL Lua Perl My question is this: How can a person evaluate a language that he/she has never used before? What criteria are good indicators for a languages potential usability on a project? While helpful suggestions for my particular case are appreciated, I feel that this is a good skill to possess and would like to be able to apply this to many different projects if at all possible

  I have a website, wich i will fill with a bunch of useful videos. I've implemented an ads rotation engine for articles and will do so for videos. The next milestone is to decide, how video will be integrated. They are two ways: To host videos myself. Pros: complete freedom. Cons: need tens of gigabytes of storage; support for multiple formats to be crossbrowser and crossdevice. Use Youtube. Pros: Very simple to use; nothing to do. What are pros and cons for each way ? Some questions for YouTube: Will i be able to control playback of YouTube-embedded video to make post-rolls ? What is ranking impact on my web-site, when most of pages will refer to YouTube ? Will, say, iPad play video, embedded via YouTube's iframe ? Does relying entirely on YouTube have a long-term perspective for a web-site, that should bring money ?
