• Dell Vostro 1510 can't connect to wireless--how can I fix this?

  I'm having some trouble with my Dell Vostro 1510. I installed wubi on it two days ago and I've only been able to use the Internet with an ethernet cable. The network seems to definitely recognize that the wireless--even other peoples' wireless--is there, but it can't manage to get on. I'll post the lpsci here, so that you can see the Broadcom card I'm working with. • shortcuts/links to windows partition disappear on reboot

  Ubuntu 11.10 recognizes my Windows 7 partition OK. Since that is where my work has historically been, I created links to various files and folders there. Everythings fine until I reboot. Then the icon reverts to the generic and I am informed the link is no longer valid. I created the links by right-clicking the folder or file and selecting "Make Link" in the Windows folder, then dragging it to the Ubuntu desktop. How can I fix this? BTW, it worked OK with Kubuntu; I got seduced by the sexy Unity desktop.....

• How to select which account is logged in at system startup, or none?

  I'm helping out some friends with a tiny hospitality business where one desktop computer has some files used by the business in one account "hotel" but it's mostly used by guests for browsing the web in another account "guest". It's low security, we're not worried about hacking or anything. But we don't want people accidentally moving our files or anything either. But the system always boots into the "hotel" account without asking for a password, even though the account has a password. We want it to boot into the "guest" account. I know a bit about computers generally and Linux but not much about Ubuntu and the ever-changing graphical environment the Linuxes are going through these days. We've looked through the obvious settings/preferences/options and I've done some Googling. I know this should be obvious easy stuff but I can't find it. (We're running 10.04 LTS on a generic aging Intel box.)

• Fresh install of 12.04 Kernel panic

  I am attempting to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my computer. After the Ubuntu splash screen, the computer throws up this error: sr 2:0:1:0: [sr0] Unhandled error code Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! PID: 1, comm: run-init Not Tainted 3.2.0-23-generic #36-Ubuntu The computer hardware is as follows: Core 2 quad 9400, 8gb RAM, GTX 275, 3 Mech HD, 2 SSD, Win 7 install. I would like to dual boot Ubuntu on this computer if possible. I did try placing this disk in my laptop and booted successfully which leads me to believe the fault lies with the desktop. Under windows all hardware seems to work ok. Any ideas?

• Multiple style sheets best practice

  I currently am working on a project which has one large style sheet for about 20 pages. The style sheet contains some styles which are specific for certain pages. I'd like to break the style sheet up so there is one style sheet for each page with one master style sheet that handles everything generic. The reason I want to do this is so people can work on multiple pages without having to worry about who has that large style sheet checked out (I'm using TFS). Is this good practice?

• Getting Started with Component Architecture: DI?

  I just moved away from MVC towards something more component-architecture-like. I have no concept of messages yet (it's rough prototype code), objects just get internal properties and values of other classes for now. That issue aside, it seems like this is turning into an aspect-oriented-programming challenge. I've noticed that all entities with, for example, a position component will have similar properties (get/set X/Y/Z, rotation, velocity). Is it a common practice, and/or good idea, to push these behind an interface and use dependency injection to inject a generic class (eg. PositionComponent) which already has all the boiler-plate code? (I'm sure the answer will affect the model I use for message/passing)

• Is it normal to sometimes take a while to get even basic things working in software development?

  This is a little hard to explain because it's a really generic question, but bear with me... I find that when I am doing or recreating basic things from scratch (i.e. without the help of libraries), sometimes it feels as though I'm taking much more time to do the task than is actually needed. I am not new to programming or development & design concepts and have worked extensively with around 9 languages and various platforms and paradigms over 5/6 years. Although I don't yet have any academic qualification for programming and have learned almost exclusively from the Internet, I have been told that the quality of my code is excellent by those with qualifications. So, I don't think I'm a bad programmer because I really love doing it and working with software architecture, but maybe I'm slow? Or is it normal to take sometimes longer than it seems necessary to do basic tasks?

• Print to file in Black and White (but not in greyscale) [not printer specific]

  Hi all, I have these pdf files of c++code and they are colored which would be cool, except that the network printer here is b&w and the printed out codes come in various shades of pale grey which makes them essentially unreadable (specially the comments). I would like everything (text, codes, commands,...) to be printed in the same (black) color. i've tried fuddling with the printer's properties, but the closest thing i see is the 'level of grey' tab, and there i have the choice between 'enhanced' and 'normal' (and it doesn't make a difference in my case). i've tried 'print to file', but i don't see any options there to print to b&w, I've tried installing the 'generic cups printer', but again no options to print to b&w. any idea ? (i'm on 10.10)

• Is it OK to mix C and C++ in an interview?

  If I am asked in an interview to write down some code, should I completely stick with C++ or is it acceptable to "mix" the two to write easy code as it comes to my mind? I'll explain it: if I'm asked to create a "stack" data type, a C++ class is perfectly suited, while if I need to parse some strings a strtok/sscanf is far easier than STL. On the other hand, if I need a generic container STL and templates are the way to go. Everything can be done in C or in C++, but in an interview I can't code everything or remember every standard/STL function. What is an acceptable tradeoff?

• Ubuntu 12.04 intermittently fails to wake up from sleep

  When I put my Ubuntu 12.04 machine into sleep, sometimes on waking up, it fails, logs me out, and takes me back to login screen. When I log back in, it tells me some unexpected error happened, but it fails to let me report the bug. This has started to happen recently, but I don't know what triggered it. uname -a Linux [name] 3.2.0-30-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Aug 24 16:52:48 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux The issue seems similar to Xorg intermittently restarts after suspend. But in my case I am not sure if it is a Xorg issue. I looked at xorg logs, but didn't notice anything indicating an error. I know I am not providing a lot of info, but I am not sure where (e.g. which log files) I should seek for more info.

• Variable names for Contact Information bits

  I am in the middle of refactoring code and would like to get some ideas on variable naming so that my new names clearly represent the data they hold. I have a class called ContactMethod which makes sense to me; each instance is a different way to contact someone. My problem comes when naming the properties of ContactMethod. For example, one instance might be a Fax number of 555-555-5555 while another could be an Email address of [email protected]; I've got a property called contactMethodType to hold the values "fax" or "email", but I don't know what to call the "555-555-5555" or "[email protected]" part. Has anyone here created a good generic name for this piece of contact information? (PS - the old convention was to call it a "Phone" with fields "phoneType" holding the "fax"/"email" value and "phoneId" holding the number/address. Yuck.)

• Does the .biz internet top-level domain deserve to be taken seriously?

  .com is the most preferable TLD most of the time, so many people choosing domain names have to pick between desiredname.something_else or totallydifferent.com. From wikipedia: The biz TLD was created to relieve some of the demand for domain names in the com top-level domain, and to provide an alternative for businesses whose preferred domain name in com had already been registered by another party. .org at least implies an organization, whereas .com is the most generic 'commercial'. But .biz seems like a total duplicate that doesn't seem in widespread use <pun>and deserves to be closed. </pun>. Does .biz have any advantages over .com? Are .biz domains worth registering if .com is already taken?

• Bad sound quality and headphones not working

  Using Ubuntu 10.10, on a HP Pavilion t3019.es, which has a Realtek ALC880 soundcard. It has 6 rear jack outputs, plus digital audio input and output, plus 3 front jacks (mic, headphones and a blue one which i don't know what's for). The sound on my computer is very low, and when i raise the volume up to 50%, it starts sounding distorted, crackling. Also, the headphones don't work when i plug them (it just keeps on playing through the speakers). I tried to comment the "/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf" file according to the soundcard and jacks in my computer, but none of the lines added worked (naturally, didn't added them at once). I found out that adding "options snd-hda-intel model=generic" to it made the sound better, but it's not as good as in Windows yet. Any ideas? Other than setting the PCM value, didn't work for me. • HTML5 article tag application for the iPad

  I've used article tags on websites. My understanding and practice is to use the article tag for publication content. I always use HTML/HTML5 tags as their intended purposes and not at will. Recently, I've seen an HTML template that uses the article tag for the non-publication page content such as the content of an About Us page or any other generic page. I asked the why it was used this way and the (vague) explanation was that it had to do with the way the iPad read the tag. Is this true?

• Getting trayer to work with dual screen setup

  I'm using XMonad as my window manager, and want to use trayer as a icon panel for things like nm-applet. The problem was that the panel wouldn't appear on the top of the screen. If I set it to the bottom it just appeared. After a lot of trying, I found out it is because my xorg.conf is setup for dualscreens, and probably the trayer panel is spawned outside my view (I currently have only a single screen, but I switch a lot). After manualy tweaking the xorg.conf file to allow for just one screen, the panel appears on the right spot.   Do you use a standard form to gather requirements from a customer prior to making a website? If so what are the questions you ask? For example Purpose of Website: (sell products, reduce number of enquires, reduce work load, etc) Do you have you’re an existing logo? (can you send it via email) Do you have a preferred font for the website text? Do you have a colour theme for your logo, business cards, shop you would like to keep on the website Do you have photos you can provide of your Products? etc Ofcause it would need to be tweaked slightly for each customer but I was looking for a generic document as a baseline.

• Second click on a launcher icon with more than one window open doesn't do a scale of that application

  In unity, if I click an icon in the launcher with multiple windows open it doesn't show me all open windows for that application. However, this works in unity2d. I known there have a same question asked before: here! But I think my condition is not as same as the previous question. ubuntu 12.04 64-bit unity 5.16.0 kernel linux 3.2.0-33-generic gnome 3.4.2 Edit I just find a interest thing: There are four workspace, label it as A, B, C, D. If I firstly open two windows of firefox in A, as I mentioned above, second click on the firefox icon does nothing. But after I open a window of firefox in B, the second click on the firefox icon in workspace A magically works!! And then, I open two terminal in workspace C, second click doesnot work until I open another terminal window in D. So, it seems that the second click only work if the application be opened more than one workspace.

• Comparisons of Javascript 'data grids'?

  I've found plenty of questions between here and StackExchange of people asking for the 'best' data grid / data table, or one that has a particular feature, and plenty of lists out there (of various ages) listing the various data grid implementations ... but is anyone aware of any matrix of what features the various solutions implement? (eg, allow shift-click to select multiple; support checkboxes for selection; can update a regular table in-place; allow editing of cells; support websql or indexeddb for local caching; which browsers they support; infinite scroll; etc.) There's a generic 'javascript framework' comparison on wikipedia, which would be the sort of thing I'm looking for, but it doesn't go into detail on data grids. (which makes sense, as so many are extensions, not core features of those frameworks, and in the case of jQuery, there's lots of 'em.)

Features I need: object rating (thumb up, thumb down) object comments object tags related object presentation based on tags user authentication and management private message system sanity checks for text inputs (i.e. prevention of code injections) cache open source runs on GNU/Linux I would gladly take something that is tailored for my scenario but a generic framework would be fine too. I simply don't want to write stuff like user authentication that is been written a million times and risking security flaws. Programming language is irrelevant but python/php preferred.

• How do I create stand alone packages from ubuntu repository

  Is it possible to create a stand alone deb packages by merging dependancies without manual repacking.?? I've looked at this question but it doesn't really answer what I'm trying to achieve above. if possible how to do it? update 1 No tools available yet(?) So what about creating new deb package containing all packages which will copy dependencies to the cache and executing main package. Is it possible? update 2 Above method appears to be impossible because dpkg cant handle more than one operation at a time. • Should I create repositories with special functions like getStaffActive()?

  I have seen lots of articles but none really help me. That is because I want to use dapper as a DAL. Should I create repositories with special functions? Like getStaffActive()? If I use repositories I can implement with dapper-extension a generic crud I have no idea how to handle database connection. Where to open the connection? If I do this at every function then how am I supposed to use transaction scope? Somehow the repositories I work with should share a connection in order transaction to work. But how to do this? Openning connection in BLL? If I use queries and execute them directly then still the same thing.
