• Homegroup libraries visible but can't be opened

  I have 2 Windows 7 PCs in a home network. When I create a homegroup, the libraries I share are visible on the opposing machine but when I doubleclick them nothing happens - no error message, nothing at all. It is the same on both computers. The homegroup works to the extent that the printer I shared is visible and can print from the other computer. Only the libraries are inaccessible. What I tried and checked so far, without result: disabling firewall file and printer sharing, MS Networks client enabled in network properties deleting and recreating homegroup reset homegroup by deleting C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking unsharing and sharing again the libraries

• How can I deactivate the gnome desktop of my ubuntu server?

  I'm running a home server on my old laptop (atom cpu). I installed ubuntu 12.04 server edition, but I also installed ubuntu-desktop. So, when I turn it on, ubuntu desktop is shown. I sometimes use GUI, but I want to turn the ubuntu-desktop (gnome-desktop) off when I don't use it. I think I can save resources by turning off the GUI. It's necessary since my laptop's performance is not very good and it often becomes very hot. I guess I can run ubuntu-desktop on my terminal with "startx" command. But, I don't know how to turn the X window off for a moment. Anybody have an idea? Thanks in advance.

• error/message: the disk drive for /home is not ready... when connecting an external hard drive

  i am running Ubuntu 10.04 all updated installed to date (3/28/2012) and when i connect another sata HD i get this message the disk drive for /home is not ready yet or not present continue to wait, or press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery so i press S but i get this message could not update ICEauthority file /home/username/.ICEauthority And when a press close i get this there is a problem with the configuration server (/usr/libconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256) And when a press close i get message Nautilus could not create the following required folders :/home/username/desktop,/home/username/.Nautilus before running Nautilus, please create these folders or set permissons such that Nautilus can reach them And finally when a press Ok at the last message it disappears and i get a blank screen with a lot of colors on it and with nothing else so i shutdown (power button ) and disconnect the HD and boot without problems so how to fix this in simple commands because i am a total Linux noob notes -In the original error my username was in place of username i wrote (did not want to confuse anybody ) -I tried searching for this problem but a got a lot of different answers and most of them were really complicated to me and not working -I got a data HD connected and working without problems also the HD i installed Ubuntu on is Sata (maybe it helps) -Apologize for me bad English its not my mother language

• Structuring Access Control In Hierarchical Object Graph

  I have a Folder entity that can be Moderated by users. Folders can contain other folders. So I may have a structure like this: Folder 1 Folder 2 Folder 3 Folder 4 I have to decide how to implement Moderation for this entity. I've come up with two options: Option 1 When the user is given moderation privileges to Folder 1, define a moderator relationship between Folder 1 and User 1. No other relationships are added to the db. To determine if the user can moderate Folder 3, I check and see if User 1 is the moderator of any parent folders. This seems to alleviate some of the complexity of handling updates / moved entities / additions under Folder 1 after the relationship has been defined, and reverting the relationship means I only have to deal with one entity. Option 2 When the user is given moderation privileges to Folder 1, define a new relationship between User 1 and Folder 1, and all child entities down to the grandest of grandchildren when the relationship is created, and if it's ever removed, iterate back down the graph to remove the relationship. If I add something under Folder 2 after this relationship has been made, I just copy all Moderators into the new Entity. But when I need to show only the top-level Folders that a user is Moderating, I need to query all folders that have a parent folder that the user does not moderate, as opposed to option 1, where I just query any items that the user is moderating. Thoughts I think it comes down to determining if users will be querying for all parent items more than they'll be querying child items... if so, then option 1 seems better. But I'm not sure. Is either approach better than the other? Why? Or is there another approach that's better than both? I'm using Entity Framework in case it matters.

• Access server by hostname without domain

  I want to access services on other machines on my home network with just their hostname. In every browser, "http://machine" fails, but adding a period in "http://machine./" works. Is there a way to avoid adding that extra period? My setup is a router with DD-WRT w/ DNSmasq turned on, Win7 machines and several Ubuntu VMs. nslookup works fine with just hostname. Remote desktop works, but TightVNC needs the extra period. ssh needs the period. As I said, all my browsers need the extra period. I'd prefer a solution that doesn't require manually maintaining the hosts file. Thanks.

  Is there a way which could let me know all the file status by just looking at the folder view, like what TortoiseHg, TortoiseSVN, TortoiseGit did on windows? Now my git repo folder looks the same as other folders. If I want to view file status I have to type git status in the command line. I want some icons which could inform me the file/folder status at my first glance on the folder view. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 EDIT I googled it, and what I'm asking for is called the overlay icon.

  I have two routers, one with dhcp turned on and the other with it off. this is a functioning home network. Now, I am trying to integrate into it a windows server. Should the windows server be doing the dhcp and dns work? And if so, what will this mean for the existing network? Will I need to reconfigure this? I am currently installing server 2003 onto my server machine. It is connected up to the network on the main router with dhcp. Any words of advice?

If you are familiar with the DayFolder application: I'm looking for an application like that but for any folder (not only the Desktop).   I am designing a WIX 3.6 installer project, during the installation we need to grand the user create file permission to the install folder(INSTALLDIR, especially with the default install folder, the Program Files, the user normally can't create file in the installation. We've experienced some failures). I guess it can be achieved by setting a Permission element, with CreateFile property. However, the INSTALLDIR is a directory, and only such elements as CreateFolder, File, FileShare, Registry, ServiceInstall can have permission element. So could anyone tell me how to do that?   Question: I use an embedded Firebird database in ASP.NET. Now, Firebird has a .NET wrapper around native dlls. The problem is, with the .NET compilation and execution process, the dlls get shadow copied to a temporary folder. Unfortunately, only the .NET dlls, and not the native dll. Now, this makes it necessary to put the unmanaged dll somewhere into the system32 directory (or any other directory in the path environment variable). Now, I want to change the wrapper/native dll (opensource), so it loads the dll also if they are only in the bin folder. Now, my problem is, how can I, in .NET, load an unmanaged dll from an absolute path ? The absolute path is determined at runtime, not at compile-time...

• Can't read from aspnet_client folder for crystal reports

  I created a little ASP .Net app to run Crystal Reports. It runs fine from VS 2008 but not when deployed to IIS on Windows 7. The toolbar images are not rendered. The problem seems to be I can't read from the aspnet_client folder even though I've made into a virtual directory. I can't even read images I put in there just to see if the folder can be read from an ASP page. I also made sure the IIS user can read from there. I'm stumped.

• Change Check Out Folder for checked out files in SourceSafe

  I had to rebuild my machine and went from XP to Windows 7. I've now got a bit of an issue: I had files checked out in SourceSafe previously, which I still have copies of in the local folder on my new install. However, SourceSafe still has them checked out to the old XP folder (c:\documents and settings etc) whereas the files now reside in c:\Users. Pending Checkins in Visual Studio now thinks I have nothing checked out, and SourceSafe declares that the files are checked out to me under the c:\documents and settings\ path. Is there any way to tell SourceSafe to simply "look over there" for the files instead? It seems to work with individually undoing and redoing checkout on the files, but that's a lengthy process and one I'd like to avoid if possible. If I simply checkout the files individually then it lists them as checked out to me twice, one for each of the locations. Any pointers would be very much appreciated!

  On a website users can upload pictures. For security reasons these are stored outside the webroot (public_html) folder.   It seems that I accidentally checked in my "gen" folder from an Android project (this folder contains the R.java generated class). When I realized I did this I deleted it from SVN and tried to ignore it. Now I am now getting the error... "Could not add gen to the ignore list! Working copy 'C:\code\guru' locked. When I try to run a cleanup command I get this... Cleanup failed to process the following paths: -C:\code\guru 'C:\code\guru\gen' is not a working copy directory. When I try to run a resolve I get this... Working copy 'C:\code\guru' locked Please execute the 'Cleanup' command. We are currently on SVN 1.6 on the server.

  My ASP.NET Website (C#, 3.5 framework, IIS7) is hosted at GoDaddy. There are multiple sites on the account. Currently when I perform postbacks or Response.Redirects on a secondary web site, the following URL appears in the address bar: www.mywebsite.com/webfolder/default.aspx Where the "webfolder" is the sub-directory on the server where the web site is hosted (i.e. SeverRoot/webfolder). The site seems to work with or without the folder in the URL. Is there a way to remove the folder from the URLs during postback? I think I have to use URL Rewriting (which GoDaddy supports using Microsoft's Rewrite Module) but I'm not sure how.

  I, like many developers, got an email from Apple recently that stated we should move our data from the documents directory into another folder to permit more streamlined backup to iCloud. In recent testing it appears that [your app] stores a fair amount of data in its Documents folder. Since iCloud backups are performed daily over Wi-Fi for each user's iOS device, it's important to ensure the best possible user experience by minimizing the amount of data being stored by your app. Marco Arment, of instapaper fame, has a good take on the issue, which is that the recommended location for storing downloadable files is in /Library/Caches. However, the problem is that both /tmp and /Caches can be 'cleaned' anytime the OS decides that the device is running low on storage. If your app is cleaned then the data downloaded by your app and stored by your user is gone. Naturally, the user will blame you and not Apple. What to do?

This works and I have got it asking for the user to select the application pool but the application pool is only being applied to the project sat in the Web Application Folder and not the one in the Web Custom Folder that I added for the second project.   I'm moving my site to a new host but I need to have my current server continue to handle requests (not all files can be moved to the new server). So I added a parked domain to my old server (old.mydomain.com) and I want all requests to it to be written to the files from the old site. My old site (mydomain.com) was hosted internally in a folder (/public_html/mydomain/) and I want all requests to old.mydomain.com to be rewritten to the same folder. So if mydomain.com/blog was internally at /public_html/mydomain/blog I now want old.mydomain.com/blog also to reach /public_html/mydomain/blog. Here is the .htaccess that I'm trying to use: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^old\.mydomain\.com/* RewriteRule ^(.*)$ mydomain/$1 [NC,L] but for some reason as soon as I add the $1 in the rewrite rule I get an internal error. Any ideas?
