  • Aggregate Functions on subsets of data based on current row values with SQL

    Hopefully that title makes sense... Let's say I have an employee table: ID | Name | Title | Salary ---------------------------- 1 | Bob | Manager | 15285 2 | Joe | Worker | 10250 3 | Al | Worker | 11050 4 | Paul | Manager | 16025 5 | John | Worker | 10450 What I'd like to do is write a query that will give me the above table, along with an averaged salary column, based on the employee title: ID | Name | Title | Salary | Pos Avg -------------------------------------- 1 | Bob | Manager | 15285 | 15655 2 | Joe | Worker | 10250 | 10583 3 | Al | Worker | 11050 | 10583 4 | Paul | Manager | 16025 | 15655 5 | John | Worker | 10450 | 10583 I've tried doing this with a sub-query along the lines of: Select *, (select Avg(e2.salary) from employee e2 where e2.title = e.title) from employee e But I've come to realize that the sub-query is executed first, and has no knowledge of the table alias'd e I'm sure I'm missing something REALLY obvious here, can anyone point me in the right diretion?

  • Google Calendar like interface

    I need to write an application that essentially functions like a week-view of a calendar, columns for the days and then rows for appointments. Where the height of the appointment box visually represents time. In my case, I just don't want the time of day as the vertical axis, I just want hours or mins. The Google AJAX approach is very clean and easy to use and would be perfect, I think, but my major knowledge comes in ASP.Net and Windows Forms (.Net). I don't want to reinvent the wheel, but I find my mind is stuck on this problem and that I would have to create an interface from scratch for this. I have checked out the Infragistics product (used it for other projects) and read up a lot on the Google API's including their Ajax toolkit. I haven't done Java, however learning a language is not my issue, it's learning the particulars that will help me reach my goal that I feel will take most of the time. Am I making a mountain out of a mole hill? Is this really a lot easier than I think? This is starting to sound like a Dear Abby post - I'll stop now. Any advice or insight would be great!   • Under what circumstances would a LINQ-to-SQL Entity "lose" a changed field?

    I'm going nuts over what should be a very simple situation. In an ASP.NET MVC 2 app (not that I think this matters), I have an edit action which takes a very small entity and makes a few changes. The key portion (outside of error handling/security) looks like this: Todo t = Repository.GetTodoByID(todoID); UpdateModel(t); Repository.Save(); Todo is the very simple, small entity with the following fields: ID (primary key), FolderID (foreign key), PercentComplete, TodoText, IsDeleted and SaleEffortID (foreign key). Each of these obviously corresponds to a field in the database. When UpdateModel(t) is called, t does get correctly updated for all fields which have changed. When Repository.Save() is called, by the time the SQL is written out, FolderID reverts back to its original value. The complete code to Repository.Save(): public void Save() { myDataContext.SubmitChanges(); } myDataContext is an instance of the DataContext class created by the LINQ-to-SQL designer. Nothing custom has been done to this aside from adding some common interfaces to some of the entities. I've exhausted my own means of research on this: Does anyone know of conditions which would cause a partial entity reset (EG, something to do with long foreign keys?), and/or how to work around this?

  • Learning Spring MVC For web-projects

    I have looked at Spring MVC a few times briefly, and got the basic ideas. However whenever I look closely it seems to require you already know a whole load of 'core Spring'. The book I have for instance has a few hundred pages before it gets onto Spring MVC... which seems a lot to wade through. I'm used to being able to jump in, but there's so much bean-related stuff and XML, it just looks like a mass of data to consume. Does it simplify if you put the time in, or is Spring just a much bigger framework than I thought? is it possible to learn this side of it in isolation?

    So this question isn't about integrating an existing payment gateway into my site. This is more of a architectural question. I want to build a system similar to Paypal. Now I understand that Paypal offers a lot of features under the roof and I can't implement all of them at once. I want to implement the core functionality of Paypal and other such services. So my question is (rather discussion is) around how would one go about building such a system. Some points to discuss: Handle payments through existing banks. I am guessing that I would need access to local bank protocols to get this. Allow users to securely store and process their payments How does Paypal handle the transactions? Thoughts?

  • Perl unit test - start a tcp server & continue

    I am trying to write a unit test for a client server application. To test the client, in my unit test, I want to first start my tcp server (which itself is another perl file). I tried to start the tcp server by forking: if (! fork()) { system ("$^X server.pl") == 0 or die "couldn't start server" } So when I call "make test" after "perl Makefile.PL", this test starts & I can see the server starting but after that the unit test just hangs there. So I guess I need to start this server in background and I tried the "&" at the end to force it to start in background & then test to continue. But, I still couldn't succeed. What am I doing wrong?   • are projects with high developer turn over rate really a bad thing?

    I've inherited a lot of web projects that experienced high developer turn over rates. Sometimes these web projects are a horrible patchwork of band aid solutions. Other times they can be somewhat maintainable mozaics of half-done features each built with a different architectural style. Everytime I inherit these projects, I wish the previous developers could explain to me why things got so bad. What puzzles me is the reaction of the owners (either a manager, a middle man company, or a client). They seem to think, "Well, if you leave, I'll just find another developer." Or they think, "Oh, it costs that much money to refactor the system? I know another developer who can do it at half the price. I'll hire him if I can't afford you." I'm guessing that the high developer turn over rate is related to the owner's mentality of "If you think it's a bad idea to build this, I'll just find another (possibly cheaper) developer to do what I want". For the owners, the approach seems to work because their business is thriving. Unfortunately, it's no fun for the developers that go AWOL 3-4 months after working with poor code, strict timelines, and little feedback. So my question is the following: Are the following symptoms of a project really such a bad thing for business? high developer turn over rate poorly built technology - often a patchwork of different and inappropriately used architectural styles owners without a clear roadmap for their web project, and they request features on a whim I've seen numerous businesses prosper while experiencing the symptoms above. So as a programmer, even though my instincts tell me the above points are terrible, I'm forced to take a step back and ask, "are things really that bad in the grand scheme of things?" If not, I will re-evaluate my approach to these projects.

    I am using jquery to set a session, i have a php page which gets the values of the person logging. The value in the session array, is then used in another page where, it is stored in a hidden field for database entry.The problem is, the value is not set unless you refresh the page of which beats the purpose of AJAX and Jquery.Again,the session seems to be one session behind.How can I do this without page refresh/ reload?

  • Memory leak in Apples 'Scrolling' sample code

    Hi All, I'm using code based on Apple's "Scrolling" sample code - here's where I have a problem: // load all the images from our bundle and add them to the scroll view NSUInteger i; for (i = 1; i <= jNumImages; i++) { NSString *imageName = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"page%d.png", i]; UIImage *image = [UIImage imageNamed:imageName]; UIImageView *imageView2 = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithImage:image]; The UIImageView causes a leak - it doesn't seem to be releasing (though I do state [imageView2 release]; after adding the imageView as a subView to scrollView2 I have say 15 chapters of a book each held in a nav bar, each containing a scroll view with one chapters worth of these image views (each image is a page). When I get to around the second last chapter the app crashes due to the memory leaks... really annoying! I think it might be because imageView's been alloc'd twice (in alloc and in addSubView) but i'm not sure.... tried releasing twice but it didn't seem to help. any pointers? Thanks in advance ^.^

  • Interface for reading variable length files with header and footer.

    I could use some hints or tips for a decent interface for reading file of special characteristics. The files in question has a header (~120 bytes), a body (1 byte - 3gb) and a footer (4 bytes). The header contains information about the body and the footer is only a simple CRC32-value of the body. I use Java so my idea was to extend the "InputStream" class and add a constructor such as "public MyInStream( InputStream in)" where I immediately read the header and the direct the overridden read()'s the body. Problem is, I can't give the user of the class the CRC32-value until the whole body has been read. Because the file can be 3gb large, putting it all in memory is a be an idea. Reading it all in to a temporary file is going to be a performance hit if there are many small files. I don't know how large the file is because the InputStream doesn't have to be a file, it could be a socket. Looking at it again, maybe extending InputStream is a bad idea. Is it simply Upgrade the Database? I think I am being thrown off as there is no specific actor/customer and that the customer is the IT department.

  • Implementing OFX specification with javascript

    Hey all, I am working on a personal project and need to retrieve financial data. After looking around how this is normally done it seems you can pay lots of money and license a service like Yodlee to get this data for you or you can implement a OFX client like wesabe has to communicate with financial institutions. Seeing as I don't have lots of money and wouldn't mind the challenge I decided to try to implement the ofx spec (unless one of you can suggest a cheap/free alternative!). I looked around for some ofx libraries other people have already written for use but didn't find anything that looked too great. I was wondering if anyone knew if it would be a bad idea to attempt this in Javascript (using XMLSocket from actionscript to handle the actual socket communication). If there is some really bad reason why I shouldn't do this please bring it up. If there is I'll just do it in Java but I think it would be neat to have it completely in javascript so it runs client-side. Anyways I was hoping for some helpful input, thanks.

  • How should the View pull on the Presenter in the MVP pattern

    I have a ASP.NET Web Forms application and I'm using some dynamic controls in the view which depend on stuff that the presenter exposes. Is it okay for the view in this case to pull on the presenter for that data? Is there anything I should be extra careful about when considering testability and a loosely coupled design. The page in this case has it's own page-life cycle and the presenter doesn't know about this. However, the page-life cycle dictates that somethings must occur at specific moments in the page-life cycle. This smells like trouble... Any known pit falls?

  • DesignMode with Controls

    Has anyone found a useful solution to the DesignMode problem when developing controls? The issue is that if you nest controls then DesignMode only works for the first level. The second and lower levels DesignMode will always return FALSE. The standard hack has been to look at the name of the process that is running and if it is "DevEnv.EXE" then it must be studio thus DesignMode is really TRUE. The problem with that is looking for the ProcessName works its way around through the registry and other strange parts with the end result that the user might not have the required rights to see the process name. In addition this strange route is very slow. So we have had to pile additional hacks to use a singleton and if an error is thrown when asking for the process name then assume that DesignMode is FALSE. A nice clean way to determine DesignMode is in order. Acually getting Microsoft to fix it internally to the framework would be even better!

    I have a VDD dll that's loaded by a DOS program running inside the NTVDM. This dll uses C++/CLI and references a .NET assembly. All in all, the loading process is something like this: NTVDM runs: prntsr.com which uses VDD RegisterModule to load: prnvdd.dll which references .NET assembly: prnlib.dll The prntsr.com, prnvdd.dll and prnlib.dll files are all in the same folder.     This is a better understanding of a question I had earlier. I have the following Objective-C++ object @interface OCPP { MyCppobj * cppobj; } @end @implementation OCPP -(OCPP *) init { cppobj = new MyCppobj; } @end Then I create a completely differently obj which needs to use cppobj in a boost::shared_ptr (I have no choice in this matter, it's part of a huge library which I cannot change) @interface NOBJ -(void) use_cppobj_as_shared_ptr { //get an OCPP obj called occ from somewhere.. //troubling line here } @end I have tried the following and that failed: I tried synthesising cppobj. Then I created a shared_ptr in "troubling line" in the following way: MyCppobj * cpp = [occ cppobj]; bsp = boost::shared_ptr<MyCppobj>(cpp); It works fine first time around. Then I destroy the NOBJ and recreate it. When I for cppobj it's gone. Presumably shared_ptr decided it's no longer needed and did away with it. So I need help. How can I keep cppobj alive? Is there a way to destroy bsp (or it's reference to cppobj) without destroying cppobj?

    Is it possible to define a virtual directory in IIS and somehow make the files in that directory relative to the physical directory and not to the virtual directory ? For instance on my server I have the following folders: D:\WebSite\Css\myTheme.css, D:\WebSite\Images\image1.jpg I created a virtual directory on IIS resources.mysite: Inside my website I reference the sheet like this resources.mysite/myTheme.css But inside myTheme.css I reference pictures from ../Images/images1.jpg. So the problem is that image1.jpg is not found because it is relative to the physical folder and not the virtual folder on IIS. Can I solve this problem without modifying the style sheet ?

  • Search Lucene with precise edit distances

    I would like to search a Lucene index with edit distances. For example, say, there is a document with a field FIRST_NAME; I want all documents with first names that are 1 edit distance away from, say, 'john'. I know that Lucene supports fuzzy searches (FIRST_NAME:john~) and takes a number between 0 and 1 to control the fuzziness. The problem (for me) is this number does not directly translate to an edit distance. And when the values in the documents are short strings (less than 3 characters) the fuzzy search has difficulty finding them. For example if there is a document with FIRST_NAME 'J' and I search for FIRST_NAME:I~0.0 I don't get anything back.

    I installed both Turtoise SVN and SubWeaver, I now have a SubWeaver drop down menu on the top of dreamweaver. I read a lot of the help files which basically explains how the system works and explains Copy-Modify-Merge. I am trying to set this up for my already existing dreamweaver site though, I am not finding information on how to do that. Can anyone explain this to me? Thanks!

  • Paypal Encrypted Website payments

    I am trying to integrate a PayPal Website Payments Standard Cart Upload payment type into my shopping cart. I integrated Google Checkout a while back and I did not find it overly confusing as I do paypal. I am getting info on how to encrypt it from here: https://cms.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/?&cmd=_render-content&content_ID=developer/e_howto_html_encryptedwebpayments#id08A3I0P017Q Paypal says I need to generate a private key and a public certificate using OpenSSL. I went to OpenSSL and downloaded the latest release, which is just a folder containing various files but I see no application I can use, not sure what to do here. Even if I were to get OpenSSL to generate me a private key and public cert, the next step is to download either an MS or Java command line tool to create the encrypted cart ahead of time with the cart-total, tax, etc. which sounds crazy to me, like I am supposed to manually do this prior to every order?? Obviously I do not know the items in the cart the customer is going to buy before hand so I need this to be done on the fly on my website using PHP. But I am completely lost. There has to be a way to setup dynamic secure cart uploads to paypal. Can someone please point me in the right direction?

  • Why doesn't my form post when I disable the submit button to prevent double clicking?

    Like every other web developer on the planet, I have an issue with users double clicking the submit button on my forms. My understanding is that the conventional way to handle this issue, is to disable the button immediately after the first click, however when I do this, it doesn't post. I did do some research on this, god knows there's enough information, but other questions like Disable button on form submission, disabling the button appears to work. The original poster of Disable button after submit appears to have had the same problem as me, but there is no mention on how/if he resolved it.
