• How do I track a branch of another repository on the same machine?

  I have two private repositories on one machine. Let's call them repo-A and repo-B, which are the directories ~/repo-A and ~/repo-B, respectively. repo-A has two relevant branches: master and live. I'd like to set up repo-B to track repo-A's live branch, so that git pull will pull any updates from repo-A's live branch into repo-B's master branch. Right now, I have the following in repo-B's .git/config: [remote "origin"] url = /home/stutzbach/repo-A/ fetch = +refs/heads/live:refs/remotes/origin/live [branch "master"] remote = origin merge = refs/heads/master However, when I run git pull, it seems to pull from repo-A's master branch. Obviously, I don't have it set up right. What's the right way?

• I don't seem to have an ASPNET user account running on my machine.

  Hi: I'm reading up on ASP.NET, and just came to a chapter that explains how to upload a file to your website. It says that in order to save a file to your file system, in the case of every OS except Win Server '03, an ASP.NET page executes in the security context of the ASPNET account. I don't have an ASPNET account running on my machine (win xp pro sp3; .NET 3.5). The program runs fine, by the way, I'm just trying to understand what an ASPNET account is exactly, and why it doesn't seem to show up on my list of user accounts. Thanks.

• Is there any advantage to having more than 16gb ram on a Windows Dev machine?

  Assuming a machine (Dual Quad Core Xeon (2.26GHz) with 24GB RAM) running Windows Server 2008 and Hyper-V. How many VMs can I expect to run at the same time with good performance. Is this overkill? Can you really have too much RAM? Assuming 2GB per VM thats around 16GB for the VMs with 8GB left over for the Main OS and Hyper-V. Sound about right? Edit: Tried to make the question sound less like bragging. Was never my intention. Its a hard question to write.

  I have an Ubuntu 9.10 desktop machine which I use locally. I am setting up a server on a hosting provider. The server will run a very minimal version of Ubuntu server LTS (only LAMP and email server no GUI). I want to write a script (scheduled as a cron job) that will allow me to upload local files onto the server. I want to use [SFTP][1], for security reasons. I am new to shell scripting - but I guess shell scripting is the way to do this (unless I am mistaken). Can anyone provide me with the initial pointers on how to go about writing such a script, in order to SECURELY upload local files to the server? • How do I run multiple ruby scripts sequentially on my local machine?

  I have about 5 or 6 ruby scripts I want to run, right after each other. These are all on my local machine (OS X) and won't be run on a server. Each takes about 15 minutes to run, and I don't want to have to wait for each one to finish before running the others manually. Without using something as heavy as delayed_job or some other queueing gem, how can I achieve this? Or should I go through the hassle of setting up sidekiq or something else? Thanks. P.S. It would be nice to restart the script if one of them times out (I am doing web crawling, so keeping an HTTP connection open sometimes gives me issues) - which happens occasionally.

  I've got an unusual build error when using Buildroot to create an image for my Phidget SBC. It's unusual because it occurs ONLY on my development laptop and NOT on my general use laptop even though I am using EXACTLY the same Builroot environment as published by Phidgets themselves. • Is there any way to view PHP code (the actual code not the compiled result) from a client machine?

  This may be a really stupid question...I started worrying last night that there might be someway to view PHP files on a server via a browser or someother means on a client machine. My worry is, I have an include file that contains the database username and password. If there were a way to put the address of this file in to a browser or some other system and see the code itself then it would be an issue for obvious reasons. Is this a legitimate concern? If so how do people go about preventing this?

  I have two machines - Windows XP and a laptop using Windows 7. I connected them with a WLAN cable. On the Windows XP machine, I set the IP address to 192.168.0.10. On the Windows 7 laptop, I set the IP address to 192.168.0.20. The laptop can see the Windows XP machine, but Windows XP machine cannot see the Windows 7 machine. But this does NOT concern me. I want to move the files from my desktop (Windows XP) to Windows 7 (laptop). That's why I'm going through all this. The problem is that when I try to connect from Windows 7 to Windows XP machine, I get this window: I don't understand what username/password is needed. I use none on the Windows XP machine. I tried all usernames - no success. Please explain in deep details how to solve my problem so I can connect to my Windows XP machine. EDIT: Maybe this can help: the Windows XP machine is named 'I' and '???????? III' is the name of the laptop. Both computers share one workgroup - WORKGROUP.

  I so sick and tired of having my components pass the minimum requirements of a game and then I get 15 FPS on the game on everything low. Should't PC developers say 'use at least this video card for a smooth 30 FPS'? Here are my specs: Windows 7 2GB DDR2 RAM XFX Nvidia 9400gt Intel Pentium D Dual Core 2.8ghz I should be at LEAST getting 30 FPS on everything low right? Please tell me what I can do to make games run as they should, or is my video card not good for these games? Here are the recommended requirements from the official site: Recommended System Requirements for Mass Effect on the PC Operating System: Windows XP or Vista Processor: 2.6+GHZ Intel or 2.4+GHZ AMD Memory: 2 Gigabyte Ram Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GTX or higher. • Why does Mac OS X Software Update not work when machine uses Active Directory?

  My company's IT department is mostly a Windows run operation and in order to become more secure, they are altering the way that the Macintosh computers login to our internal network so that they use Active Directory like their Windows counterparts. I have been given Administrative permission on my Mac and I am able to do most of what I used to be able to do in terms of authentication of software installations. However, there is a problem: the "Software Update" feature doesn't work. What happens is that when I try to get the Mac to perform its Software Updates from the Apple menu, the normal window appears listing what has to be updated; I am able to select what to update and click the "Update" button, but then nothing happens. It doesn't ask for authentication like it used to, the computer doesn't perform any download or installation (it does sometimes ask me to agree to license agreements for iTunes). I can download the updates individually and install them without any issues, but the auto-update fails. I'd rather use the Software Update menu item like I used to: it is much more convenient. Any suggestions on how I can fix this? EDIT Nov 19th, 2009, 10:09 EST: I have posted this question to the Apple Mac OS X Snow Leopard support forum. EDIT Nov 19th, 2009, 12:39 EST:Yes, the Terminal command "sudo softwareupdate --install --all" does work flawlessly. I want to avoid that as my co-workers are generally not comfortable on the Mac. I also tried Chealion's suggestion to delete "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist" and "/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist", Software Update still fails. However, I did get diagnostic messages in the Console (below). I've deleted the MS Office Package Receipts and examined the suhelperd (Software Update Helper Daemon?); it appears that suhelperd is crashing and that explains why it doesn't work. I've submitted a bug report to Apple (radar://7408619). • How do I make some files on my machine accessible via HTTP using Apache?

  I did a wget on the source and built the apache binaries correctly. Now what do I need to do to get some documents accessible using HTTP (start some services?)? Also, do I need to group all the files I want to make accessible in some directory and make the directory and its contents accessible or can I just make the individual documents available? I will be providing these links to my colleagues and do not want them to be down, so need to make sure that the apache services are up automatically after a reboot. Does apache have some inbuilt support for this?

  Systems: My Machine: Windows 7 Ultimate connected through ethernet into router Her Machine--Other Machine: Windows 7 Ultimate connected through wireless Router:F5D8236-4 N Wireless Router Version 1 Firmware: 2.01.03 (Apr 28 2009) ISP: Comcast Problem: I can not view the "Other Machine" on the network at all. I opened command prompt and ran net view and saw the pc name. I tried pinging the pc and it times out. Went inside the router and tried viewing the computer on the DHCP list and it can not be seen. I restored the router back to default settings and firmware and completely reset the modem and router, and created home group. I went to the other machine to configure home group settings and made sure that both PC's had identical settings. She was able to see my machine but I could not see hers. I restarted both machines and now we cant see each other at all. Also her PC ("Other Machine") had exclamation mark in the wireless icon but was connected just fine. There is no firewalls on currently or anti-virus enabled, and still can not see each other. Right now I am checking for updated drivers for the wireless card, but my question is could it be the router or something hardware related? I have went through all the settings in the Home group and visited most FAQ's and still no luck. Also as it stands I can not view her machine inside the router DHCP Client List :(

• What would I need to do to clone a Linux install to another machine?

  Basically, I want to make an image of one Linux install I have, and distribute it over similar (if not identical) spec machines on a network. I know it is possible, however am unsure of what needs to be done before I make the image of the install to ensure it works correctly on all machines. First think I know needs to be done, is remove all interface configuration, as I assume it would just jump to eth1 (and possibly use the same MAC), as it wont locate the network interface it had before, how would I do this so it auto detects and goes to eth0 again? Is there anything else I would need to do to the install before I make its image?

• Can I have a single solid state drive and a RAID array on the same machine?

  Hi- To summarize, i'm looking to use a single solid state drive as my primary drive, and two conventional sata drives in a RAID 1 configuration for data. I am trying to install 64-bit Windows 7 onto this configuration. Is this possible? Here are the details: I built a desktop that has been running 64-bit Vista on two 500Gb in a RAID 1 array for a few years. I just purchased an Intel X25-M 80Gb Sata Solid-State Drive, and was planning on using this a my primary drive, and keeping the RAID 1 array as my data drive. I added the SSD drive and in the RAID setup, configured it as a RAID 0 array of only one disk. Then, I tried to do a clean install of windows 7 64-bit, but got stuck in the "Missing driver for CD/DVD drive" black hole of selecting driver files and Windows telling me that i don't have the appropriate driver for my hardware. The missing hardware is NOT a CD/DVD drive, since i'm installing off of my only CD/DVD drive. Plus at one point i was able to point it at a driver for my raid controller, and then my hard drives magically showed up as browsable sources for finding drivers for some other unnamed device that setup couldn't recognize. After a few hours of trying drivers (this was a very slow process) i decided to reboot and look at the BIOS settings. I'm using an ASUS M2A-VM motherboard which has an ATI SB600 RAID controller on board. I switched the "On board SATA Type" setting from "SATA" to "AHCI" thinking that since AHCI is an Intel thing, this would help. Unfortunately, this abandoned my RAID configuration, and my previously mirrored drives are showing up as separate drives when i boot into my current windows installation. Am i trying to do the impossible here? Should i just buy a separate SATA/RAID PCI card and plug the SSD into that? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  I need to be able to set the date on Ubuntu (8.04.4 LTS) to the year 2040 (to test something that isn't relevant to this question). Is that possible? I can run: $ sudo date -s "15 JAN 2038 18:00:00" Fri Jan 15 18:00:00 PST 2038 ...but: $ sudo date -s "15 JAN 2039 18:00:00" date: invalid date `15 JAN 2039 18:00:00' Is the limit somewhere in 2038 (or prior to Jan. 15, 2039)? Does this change with different versions of Linux?

  I am recording some game play capture (recording playing of PS3 or Wii) using a PC with Windows 7 and Hauppauge 1212 HD Recorder, and I have 4GB of RAM... is there a way to increase the size of Windows 7's hard disk cache size so that writing to the hard drive can be super fast? Since there is at least 1.5GB of RAM not being used, something like allocating 1GB just as hard disk cache, is it possible?

• Error 53 - The network path was not found.

  I have a machine in my Active Directory Domain that I can no longer "net view" from other machines in the domain. This is a Windows XP Pro machine. It is hosting a VMWare virtual of my Domain Controller. If I attempt to net view [machine name] I get system error 53, The network path was not found. This is not a DNS issue, the same thing happens with the machine's IP. I don't think it's a firewall issue, I turned the firewall off on this machine. As I mentioned, it has worked in the past, and then stopped for no reason that I can see. I (intentionally) didn't change the software. I CAN get to the VMs hosted on this machine, can connect to their shares, net view them, etc. All other machines can see each other. In fact, the problem machine can see other machines and access their shares just fine. I tried removing the machine from the domain and re-adding it. I tried deleting the shares and recreating them. Not sure how to troubleshoot this any further. Any ideas?

• How can I remotely tell what brand/model internal SCSI card is installed in a machine?

  I am doing some consulting work for a previous employer upgrading and migrating old servers to new hardware. There is an existing file server (HP ProLiant DL380) that has an tape backup drive connected; it is using a SCSI interface and I'm pretty sure it's using an internal SCSI card. They are upgrading to a new server hardware (HP ProLiant DL160 G6). The old server is 2U, the new one 1U and we would want to move the tape drive to the new server, too. I'm trying to figure out if the SCSI card in the old server would be able to be installed in the new one or if we'll need to source a new card; mostly I don't know for sure the height of the card and if it's low-profile enough that it would fit in the new server. There is not much of a technical resource onsite and the old server is in-use anyway so I would like to avoid making a trip in myself or trying to have someone onsite pop open the case and tell me what card is there. It's running Windows Server 2003 - is there a way to tell from say Device Manager what make and model the SCSI card might be? Or any other system diagnostic program or something that would give me hardware info like that? Thanks for any info!

• Does liquid cooling mean I no longer need to dust my machine?

  I've got two long haired cats, a dog and I live with a smoker. I use my computer pretty much all day everday, and though I put it to sleep in the night, those fans are constantly going during the day. In just 6 months the rear fans have so much hair wrapped around them it looks more like something from a vacuum cleaner rather than electronic equipment! Due to this, I'm interested in liquid cooling. However, it appears that liquid cooled systems have fans and liquid cooling? Are those just hybrid solutions? They wouldn't really help my situation. There does appear to be fanless systems that use a radiator to dissipate heat. If I implemented one of these could I seal up the vents on my PC and never have to dust it again? Is there a disadvantage to fanless liquid cooling? I don't need to overclock at the moment but I ever want to push my components will fanless liquid cooling be pretty rubbish?

• Recommended apps for securing/protecting a new desktop machine install?

• Is Tomcat Shared Session / Cluster between two machine possible?

  I have a setup of several Tomcat servers distributed between a few servers, all running the same thing. Apache is on top of Apache and a loadbalancer in front of the Apache servers. I want to cluster the Tomcats using Shared Session to minimize downtime and user interruption while deploying apps. I know clustering works within the same server but is it possible to setup Tomcat in a way that it shares sessions between servers on different machines? => Server 1 ==> Apache 1 ===> Tomcat 1 => Server 2 ==> Apache 2 ===> Tomcat 2 When Server/Tomcat 1 would be taken down, users and their sessions would transfer over to Server/Tomcat 2 and vice versa.

• I can't uncheck the "read-only" attribute from a folder on a Windows Server 2008 machine.

  Hello everybody. I have a folder (C:\temp) on a windows server 2008 R2 installation. Initially it has the Read Only attribute checked, but I want to uncheck it. I am able to uncheck it and it even shows me the loading process (it is showing me that it is going through all the subfolders), but after I press OK and I go back to properties, it still remains checked as Read Only.
