    Etckeeper is a great tool for keeping track of changes to your configuration files in /etc A few key things about it really stand out. It can be used with a wide variety of VCSs: git, mercurial, darcs, or bzr. It also does auto commits daily and whenever you install, remove or upgrade package. It also keeps track of file permissions and user/group ownership metadata. I would also like to keep my "dot files" in my home directory under version control as well, preferably bazaar. Does anyone know if a tool like etckeeper exists for this purpose? Worst case, I imagine that a simple cron job running bzr add && bzr ci once or twice a day along with adding ~/Documents, ~/Music, ect to the .bzrignore Anyone already doing something similar with a script? While I'd prefer bazaar, other options might be interesting.

  • Backup files with rsync: error 23

    Hi I'm trying to make a backup of my /home to transfer all data from one computer to another. I wanted to save the backup on the same computer and than transfere it to another one. For safety reasons, I'm trying to learn how does it work on the computer without a lot of data (the new one) to be sure I won't delete something instead of copying it. I've run in terminal: sudo rsync -avz /home/maria /home/guest/backup and I had as the result: sent 58797801 bytes received 23050 bytes 4705668.08 bytes/sec total size is 100202958 speedup is 1.70 rsync error: some files/attrs were not transferred (see previous errors) (code 23) at main.c(1060) [sender=3.0.7] I've tried once again, with the same result. I have no idea, which files were not transferred, what makes the whole backup useless for me (I wanted to do it automatically in order not to forget about something and loose it). On both computers I have the same system (Ubuntu 10.04). Rsync version: 3.0.7-1ubuntu1. Thanks for any tips

  • Best practices for managing deployment of code from dev to production servers?

    I am hoping to find an easy tool or method, that allow's managing our code deployment. Here are the features I hope this solution has: Either web-based or batch file, that given a list of files, will communicate to our production server, to backup those files in different folders, and zip them and put them in a backup code folder. Then it records the name, date/time, and purpose of the deployment. Then it sends the files to their proper spot on the production server. I don't want too complex an interface to doing the deployment's because then they might never use it. Or is what I am asking for too unrealistic? I just know that my self-discipline isn't perfect, and I'd rather have a tool I can rely on to do what needs to be done, then my own memory of what exact steps I have to take every time. How do you guys, make sure everything get's deployed correctly, and have easy rollback in case of any mistakes?

  • How do I export customized Libreoffice config files?

    Is this possible? I want to make my own config file for my customizations that I can apply whenever I reinstall my system. For example, Ubuntu's default font color is just stupid. I want it to be BLACK and not dark grey. And I want to turn on autosave every 3rd minute and backup files. Is there a config file that I can change? The .libreoffice/* folders and XML files doesn't make sense, and they don't seem to change when I change stuff in LibreOffice. Could someone please help me out with this? Thanks.

  • cannot rename files when saving

    I am using xubuntu 13.10. Since the last update, when I am saving files I cannot rename other files, there are missing buttons in context menu like rename, cut, copy, etc... let`s say I edited the file named style.css in firefox, and I want to save it, but i do not want to overwrite the original, I want to rename the original for ex: style_orig.css and save the edited file with the name style.css. for doing that I must open thunar, navigate to that file, and rename it, after that, I can save the file from firefox. let`s reformulate this question: if I want to overwrite a file, but preserve the original, then I must make a copy of the original. Well, I can not do this when saving the file from the application, I must open thunar and navigate to that file which is an additional task I have to do. It`s a waste of time.

  • C# to loop through folder until it finds the correct files

    I’m running a batch to do an update to my sql table. I’m using windows scheduler to run the batch file. Each day files come in at different time. Sometime they come in after my scheduled time therefore the batch file doesn’t run when there’s no file before the scheduled task in the folder. I want to create a c# program where it will loop through the folder until it finds the files and then move to the next step in the batch file. Basically my goal is to create a program that will look for those particular files and once they finds the correct files then it will start the update. I’m new to programming and need some direction.   • Drilling into a drive and changing folder names & document names

    I have a drive on my computer that has folder--some of which have lots of folders w/in other folders and also contain files. I need to migrate these docs into sharepoint, however a LOT of these folders and files have invalid characters that will not allow me to migrate into sharepoint (i.e. " / \ &, etc.) Is there any way to write something in C# that basically removes these invalid characters from all folders and files? Please help!

  • Moving a large number of files in one directory to multiple directories

    I am looking to create a Windows batch script to move about 2,000 files and splitting them up so that there are 10 files per folder. I have attempted creating a batch script but the syntax really boggles my mind. Here is what I have so far @echo off :: Config parameters set /a groupsize = 10 :: initial counter, everytime counter is 1, we create new folder set /a n = 1 :: folder counter set /a nf = 1 for %%f in (*.txt) do ( :: if counter is 1, create new folder if %n% == 1 ( md folder%nf% set /a n += 1 ) :: move file into folder mv -Y %%f folder%nf%\%%f :: reset counter if larger than group size if %n% == %groupsize% ( set /a n = 1 ) else ( set /a n += 1 ) ) pause Basically what this script does is loop through each .txt file in the directory. It creates a new directory in the beginning and moves 10 files into that directory, then creates a new folder again and moves another 10 files into that directory, and so on. However, I'm having problems where the n variable is not being incremented in the loop? I'm sure there's other errors too since the CMD window closes on me even with pause. Any help or guidance is appreciated, thanks for your time!

    I'm using the Microsoft.SmartDevice.Connectivity features, but I do not know how to get the CoreCon Folder and files under "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\corecon\1.0\1033" deployed as part of an install project. The "new DatastoreManager(1033)" fails becouse users of my app do not have that folder and device xml files. Any Ideas of how to install or deploy those files? I assume I have those as part of an API I've installed, but can not pinpoint the source. Thanks

  • TeamCity output artifacts not published to IIS7 folder

    I am trying to set up TeamCity to build and deploy an ASP.NET MVC application. I have the setup running successfully on other servers using TeamCity 4.5, but the new server is running TeamCity 6, and I am having trouble getting it to work as expected. TeamCity manages to get the files from source control, and the project (Visual Studio Solution 2008 set to "Build") builds and outputs the necessary files as expected. The problem seems to be with my artifact paths, as the output files are not copied to the website folder. My solution consists of dozen projects, of which the "Web" project is the interesting one in this case. The build checkout directory is C:\TeamCity\buildAgent\work\7da320cebf0ee541, and the "Web"-project is found in C:\TeamCity\buildAgent\work\7da320cebf0ee541\Web I have set up my build configuration with the following artifact paths (relative from checkout directory to the folder containing the website): Web/bin=>../../../../inetpub/wwwroot/staging/bin Web/Content=>../../../../inetpub/wwwroot/staging/Content Web/Views=>../../../../inetpub/wwwroot/staging/Views Web/Media=>../../../../inetpub/wwwroot/staging/Media Web/*.aspx=>../../../../inetpub/wwwroot/staging Web/*.asax=>../../../../inetpub/wwwroot/staging (I've tried with more ../ just in case, but it didn't make a difference). Is there anyway we can specify in the configuration file so that it will create at run time the log file inside of the folder somename_2010-04-09-23-03 folder..?   • Ubuntu One synching changed files

    I have several folders in the Ubuntu1 folder and if I add a new file (on my PC oder my Mobile) the file shows up in the other device or in the online access. However, if I change one of the files (like a spreadsheet I change almost daily on my PC) Ubuntu1 is not updating the changed file. It is still the old file on the other devices. Doesn't Ubuntu1 sync changed files only new ones or do I have to change some settings? Could someone be so nice and help me? Thanks in advance! Mark PS: I am using Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit.

  • I see files in filezilla, but the internet denies their existance

    I am doing some updates to a 10-year old site, and I am baffled. Everything worked great locally, so I uploaded a bunch of stuff to the server using filezilla. Within filezilla I can see all of the files, but for some reason I get a 404 when trying to view them. It seems as though (at least for the folder Im currently checking) this is happening for items which are "farther down the list" alphabetically. I tried to re-upload a file individually but it didn't change anything. Is this an indication that I hit some sort of limit with the hosting company? And if so why can I still view the files from filezilla? Please offer guidance. I am at a loss.
