• Opening password protected Excel 2007 documents by double clicking from My documents does not work u

  When all of the following conditions are true, excel will open (most of the time) but will not open the document itself. No error is displayed. This only occurs with Excel files, Word and powerpoint do open perfectly. Conditions : OS is "Windows 7 Professional 64-bit" office is "Office 2007 Ultimate". excel file is in .xls (2003 format) excel file is password protected excel file is in "My Documents" (or a subfolder of it) file is double-clicked from explorer under Windows 7. Following options do open the excel file as it should : right click and selecting the (bold) open action single click the file and pressing enter moving the file to the desktop and double-click it. non password protected files do open from the same directory. Actions taken not resolving the problem: - reboot - repair office installation - system restore does not work because of Antivirus application installed (message from system restore, using "Symantec Internet Security 2010") Anyone any idea ?

• Way to update / refresh / reschedule project plan after adding a vacation / changing calendar

  I had created a project plan using MS-Project 2010 (not server). I had set the task schedule mode to "Auto Scheduled" and entered the necessary tasks. Since it is a single person project I also added one person to the Resource of the file and assigned that resource to all the tasks and leveled the project. After the plan was put in and tasks were leveled I figured the calendar was not correctly set (in UAE the weekend is Friday and Saturday instead of Saturday and Sunday). So, I updated the default calendar (Standard) of the project by going to Project-Change Working Time-Work Weeks and changed them as needed. But after doing this, the tasks are still scheduled over Friday and Saturday even though I have marked them as nonworking days in the standard calendar. I tried the following for the tasks to refresh, but I was not successful: Updated all tasks to use the "Standard" calendar in the project Selected option so that tasks do not ignore resource calendars Added a constraint "As Soon As Possible" Executed "Level All" Any help on solving this issue would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.

• How do I stop Outlook from stealing mailto protocol from Gmail?

  In Chrome, when I click on a mailto: link, I'd like to be taken to my Gmail's Compose window. So I downloaded ChromeMailer and it works relatively well. However, after using Outlook 2010, the default for the mailto reverts to Outlook. I went into Outlook's Options, clicked Default Programs... and was greeted with this: As you can see, the checkbox is grayed out and I can't do anything to changed it. Clicking Select All checkbox does nothing either. How do I stop Outlook from stealing the mailto protocol handler?

• Word document has very strange "hidden" formating after converting from PDF to .docx

  I have a PDF document with my resume which I need to edit. I used this service to convert it to doc. I opened it in Word 2010 and saved it as .docx. There are some bizzare problems where there's empty space and if you try to delete it text gets shifted into vertical columns. How can I fix this? I'm afraid this document has a lot of private information and I can't just fill in dummy text, then the formatting gets even more messed up :/ Otherwise I'd post screen shots.

If I create a hyperlink to a regular HTML file, when I click on the link, it opens in my default browser (Google Chrome) as expected. However, if I click on a link to a PDF file on a website, it opens in Internet Explorer. Before it opens, I also get the following prompt: Microsoft Office Opening http://www.example.com/example.pdf Some files can contain viruses or otherwise be harmful to your computer. It is important to be certain that this file is from a trustworthy source. Would you like to open this file? OK Cancel I'm using Office 2010, but I'm asking for a user who is using Office 2007 and is experiencing the same issue. (His default browser is Firefox.) We're both on Windows 7.

• Table Formatting in Excel 2007: How do I remove it?

  I've used the new Table Formatting option in Excel 2007. Now I can't remove it. I've dragged the little blue square up to the last cell on the top left, but it just won't go any further. In fact it just won't go at all. Clear all doesn't remove it. What does? I want my table back! I'm not a beginner with Excel, but this little annoyance has made me feel like on. • Font used for attachment title

  When I add an attachment to any document in Word 2010 the font used for the title has changed. I am not talking about adding a caption but the title that is shown automatically as part of the attachment icon: Anything which I attached before today is still showing with the correct font but any new items use a different font. This affects all types of attachments (for example, .msg, .xml, .css). I don't know what I have done to alter the behaviour. How can I change the font back to the default please?

Technicians should be able to write in the document but if they try to save it, it should prevent them from doing so. How is this possible. In word 2007, I kept a password for the document. so it gives an options to do ready only if you don't know the password.

• FileSystemWatcher.Changed fires immediately when Excel 2007 opens XLS file in compatibility mode

  We use a FileSystemWatcher to monitor documents opened from our Document Management system, and if the user saves the document, we ask if they would also like them updated in our system. We have a problem with XLS files in Excel 2007 (have not verified that the problem does not exist in 2003, but it only seems to be files that open in compatibility mode in 2007) where the Changed event fires immediately upon opening the file, and then once more upon closing the file, even if nothing has changed or the user chooses not to save upon closing. This same behavior does not exist when opening XLSX files. I wrote a test app to verify the behavior, which you can find at (http://www.just2guys.net/SOFiles/FSWExcel.zip). In the app, there is one FileSystemWatcher for each NotifyFilter type, so that it is apparent why the Changed event was fired. Any way you can think of to only prompt the user when the document is actually saved in some way by the user? I can start monitoring the file after Process.Start is called, which allows me to skip the message upon opening the document, but I still get one upon closing the document, even when nothing was changed.

  I have an excel spreadsheet that is separated into different sections with named ranges. I want to hide a named range when a checkbox is clicked. I can do this for one checkbox, but I would like to have a single function that can hide the appropriate section based on the calling checkbox. I was planning on calling that function from the event_handlers for when the checkboxes are clicked, and to pass the checkbox as an argument. Is there a way to access the checkbox object that calls the event handler? • Neophyte question about using Subtotal and CountIf in Excel

  Hi, I'm using Excel and having some problems with Countif and I don't understand how it works differently from SubTotal. I used the GUI to subtotal stuff and all the subtotals are right. Then I attempted to use the Countif to see how many requirements passed. That worked for the first subtotal only. It's easy to see why. When I look at the box for the subtotal, it says: =SUBTOTAL(3,C286:C292) When I look at my formula for passed requirements, I have: =IF(ISTEXT(A285),COUNTIF(C286:C338,"=Passed"),"") Notice that the last column is wrong. How did the Subtotal manage to keep this correct? I typed in the formula for passed requirements and dragged it down the page. Everything behaved as expected (even the bit about ISTEXT dutifully figured out which row was which), but it got the last row wrong. Any ideas? There are several possible reasons: The file name or path does not exist The file is being used by another program The workbook you are trying to save has the same name as a... I know the path is correct, I also know that the file is not open anywhere else. The workbook has the same name as the one I'm trying to save over but it should just overwrite.   I am using vba and I have two sheets one is named "Do Not Call" and has about 800,000 rows of data in column A. I want to use this data to check column I in the second sheet, named "Sheet1". If it finds a match I want it to delete the whole row in "Sheet1".   Hi, I am using Word 2010 and some built-in features with fields, such as bibliography. My Word installation is English and I am writing a report in US English. However, my computer has its locale set to Denmark. This affects the formatting of dates and some of the text in the auto-generated fields (e.g. in bibliography it says "citeret:" instead of "cited:"). This solution worked for sometime, but am back to square one again. Solutions are sought, as this is a nagging problem, I am sure others would have experienced the same.

• Upload An Excel File in Classic ASP On Windows 2003 x64 Using Office 2010 Drivers

  So, we are migrating an old web app from a 32-bit server to a newer 64-bit server. The app is basically a Classic ASP app. The pool is set to run in 64-bit and cannot be set to 32-bit due to other components. However, this breaks the old usage of Jet drivers and subsequent parsing of Excel files. After some research, I downloaded the 64-bit version of the new 2010 Office System Driver Beta and installed it. Presumably, this allows one to open and read Excel and CSV files. Here's the snippet of code that errors out. • Getting a Specified Cast is not valid while importing data from Excel using Linq to SQL

  This is my second post. After learning from my first post how fantastic is to use Linq to SQL, I wanted to try to import data from a Excel sheet into my SQL database. First My Excel Sheet: it contains 4 columns namely ItemNo ItemSize ItemPrice UnitsSold I have a created a database table with the following fields table name ProductsSold Id int not null identity --with auto increment set to true ItemNo VarChar(10) not null ItemSize VarChar(4) not null ItemPrice Decimal(18,2) not null UnitsSold int not null Now I created a dal.dbml file based on my database and I am trying to import the data from excel sheet to db table using the code below.   I recently presented session on Statistics and Best Practices in Virtual Tech Days on Nov 22, 2010. The sessions was very popular and I got many questions right after the sessions. The number question I had received was where everybody can get the further information. I am very much happy that my sessions created some curiosity for one of the most important feature of the SQL Server. Statistics are the heart of the SQL Server. Microsoft has published a white paper on the subject how statistics are useful to Query Optimizer. Here is the abstract of the same white paper from Microsoft. Statistics Used by the Query Optimizer in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Writer: Eric N. Hanson and Yavor Angelov Microsoft SQL Server 2008 collects statistical information about indexes and column data stored in the database. These statistics are used by the SQL Server query optimizer to choose the most efficient plan for retrieving or updating data. This paper describes what data is collected, where it is stored, and which commands create, update, and delete statistics. By default, SQL Server 2008 also creates and updates statistics automatically, when such an operation is considered to be useful. This paper also outlines how these defaults can be changed on different levels (column, table, and database). In addition, it presents how certain query language features, such as Transact-SQL variables, interact with use of statistics by the optimizer, and it provides guidance for using these features when writing queries so you can obtain good query performance.
