• [Linux] Coding a GTK+ application without window manager?

  Hi, I want to code sth. that basically works like TiVo. Switch it on, you only see the menu or an output, so no underlying OS or anything else is directly visible to the user. So I want to use Linux as base. Can you suggest a good base distribution? Can I code a frontend without having a window-manager up and running? If yes, is that possible with java-gnome or what language/gui-framework combination would you suggest? If no, what's the minimal window manager that can handle fancy menus, etc? What does it take to create video-overlays over a HD-stream? Are there some libraries I should take a look at? Thanks

• What is an algorithm for minimizing some D distances between N items?

  A classmate printed out a diagram of a database for class, the kind with lines representing relationships between tables. However, his lines crossed all over the place and it looked ugly. So I got to thinking about a way to move the tables to minimize the total line distance, and I couldn't think of a way to do it, other than just moving them all on top of each other. So basically: Given N items on some 2d coordinate space and some amount of connections between pairs of those items, how do you move the items so that the total distance between pairs is minimal, but that no distance is smaller than S? (so that the tables would not be too close together) Is there some algorithm for this? (I realize that smallest total distance won't necessarily make the layout less ugly; lines might still cross. But the table layout is just what got me thinking)

• setting syntax on in vim with large C file makes complete very slow

  when I have syntax on in a large C file (about 8000) lines the completion ctrl-p and ctrl-n are very slow (more than 20). When I turn syntax off then completion takes less than a second. Any ideas on how to solve this? Thanks! EDIT: I figured out a minimal way of reproducing this behaviour: with an empty .vimrc and .vim folder the only changed settings are :set syntax on :set foldmethod=syntax and a large C file to edit, completion (and even general editing) becomes very very slow.

• Advice about testing an application before release?

  I would like to get some tips from peer developers about how you go about testing an application you developed, prior to release to QA. Keep in mind, this is a small scale application (requirements are verbal), and so doing formal testing processes wont work, especially, since your boss told you to develop this app quick, push it out the door. Despite the time restraints, I would like to make sure it is bug free, however, numerous times in the past, I have had the app sent back to me because clicking the "Reset" button, messes up the other controls alignment etc. I know there are people out there that develop small scale apps fast, and send them out with minimal bugs. Given two nodes in the graph, let's say A, and B, and given the weight of an edge A-B denoted as w(A, B), I need to find a node C so that max(w(A, C), w(B, C)) is minimal among all possibilities.   I was working on some code and wanted to make use of std::rel_ops. From what I can tell, you need to do using std::rel_ops to your source code to make use of them. But I'm not sure where the best place to put that is. Let's say I have a header file with a class that only defines the minimal operator== and operator<: // foo.h class foo { public: bool operator==(const foo &other) const; bool operator<(const foo &other) const; }; I'm not sure where to put using std::rel_ops. If I leave it out of the foo.h, then every user of foo.h needs to know the implementation detail that foo is not defining all the operators itself. But putting using std::rel_ops inside foo.h breaks the rule of thumb about not having a using in a header file. How do other people resolve this issue?

• Which of FILE* or ifstream has better memory usage?

  I need to read fixed number of bytes from files, whose sizes are around 50MB. To be more precise, read a frame from YUV 4:2:0 CIF/QCIF files (~25KB to ~100KB per frame). Not very huge number but I don't want whole file to be in the memory. I'm using C++, in such a case, which of FILE* or ifstream has better (less/minimal) memory usage? Please kindly advise. Thanks! EDIT: I read fixed number of bytes: 25KB or 100KB (depending on QCIF/CIF format). The reading is in binary mode and forward-only. No seeking needed. No writing needed, only reading. EDIT: If identifying better of them is hard, which one does not require loading the whole file into memory?

• Making an asynchronous interface appear synchronous to mod_python users

  I have a Python-driven web interface powered by Apache 2.2 with mod_python and Python 2.4. I need to make an asynchronous process appear synchronous to users of this web interface. When users access one module on this website: An external SOAP interface will be contacted with a unique identifier and will respond with a number N The external interface will respond asynchronously by contacting a SOAP server on my machine between 1 and 10 times (the number N tells us how many responses we will receive) I need to somehow aggregate these responses and pass them to the original module which will display the information back to the user. The goal is to make the process appear synchronous to the user. What is the best way to handle this synchronization issue? Is this something Twisted would be well-suited for? I am not restricting myself to Python for the solution, though it is preferred because everything else on the server is in Python. I prefer a solution that is both scalable and will take a minimal amount of programming time (though I understand that these attributes are somewhat at odds).

  I have an Ubuntu 9.10 desktop machine which I use locally. I am setting up a server on a hosting provider. The server will run a very minimal version of Ubuntu server LTS (only LAMP and email server no GUI). I want to write a script (scheduled as a cron job) that will allow me to upload local files onto the server. I want to use [SFTP][1], for security reasons. I am new to shell scripting - but I guess shell scripting is the way to do this (unless I am mistaken). • BIRT PDF report : fixed table heigth?

  Hi, I am trying to display a table to display of products (rows) in a single A4 fixed layout page. I manage to add a table with header/detail/footer sections but I can not set a minimum heigth for the detail section (150mm for example). If I set a 150mm heigth on the detail row, then Each row will have that 150mm heigth.   I am attempting to design and build a website for my friends band. There is minimal content to be included such as bio,news,enbemdded Audio/Visual material. My web dev expertise is average. I'm basicaly looking for inspiration, I was edging towards embedding a silverlight deepzoom xap object to add some visual stimulation, perhaps by featuring a high res photo of the bandshardware/equipment which zooms when mouseover occurs. Does anyone have any cool ideas for a central feature for this site, and which way to approact it in terms of technique (js,css,silverlight etc) If anyone has any immediate ideas which they think would be cool then I am eager to hear them!   Preferably something that integrates well with a Flex front end. Yes the Spring Security guys say this is possible, but all examples seem to use legacy jsp tag libraries making them half useless as examples. I don't want to spend a month setting up and learning how to use a security tool. I would like a tool which supports using annotations (@RolesAllowed etc), MINIMAL XML, and 'remember-me' features (not cookie based). Apache Shiro seems to support Flex/Silverlight/Swing as well but I'd like to know if there are any other alternatives that are NOT container specific.

• Reconstructing simple 3d enviroment(room) from photo

  I have photo of a room with three walls and floor/ceiling or both. I am trying to reconstruct this room in 3d asking user for minimal input. Right now I use 8 points defined by user, angles of left and right wall(they can be quite different from 90) and one size "InLeftBottom-InRightBottom"(I need to have real size of this room for later use). I have no info about user's camera(I can read EXIF to get FOV and use constant height but this can be only used as additional info). Is this possible to ask user for less info? Maybe it's possible to get wall angles without user interaction? Or maybe I am completly wrong and should use different approach?

• How do you configure firefox to open an application without prompting the user?

  I've got a serverside app that send down a custom mime-type file "application/x-optibase". Firefox prompt user user to save or open the file and if the user clicks open the correct application launches so I believe I have mimeType.rdf configured correctly I've gone into about:config and set browser.helperApps.neverAsk.openFile to application/x-optibase and browser.helpApps.alwaysAsk.force to false According to the minimal documentation out there this should enable the application to automatically open when the user downloads the file but it doesn't seem to work. Any ideas? Thanks.

  I'm learning Python and decided to start familiarizing myself with the (defacto?) Python web framework - django. I have successfully installed the latest release of django. I want a simple 'hello world' website that will get me up and running quickly. I am already familiar with web frameworks (albeit for different languages) - so I just need a simple 'hello world' example website to help me get going. Ideally, I don't want to mess up with my Apache server settings (as I am still experimenting), so I want to use the lightweight web server that django bundles. I cant seem to find how to do this on the django website though - no doubt someone will post a link and shame me ... So, does anyone know of a link that shows how to get a simple 'hello world' django website up and running with minimal fuss?

• Free service that allows storing game data online?

  I have created a small game in Java and I would like to add the ability for a player to publish his highscores online. I'm willing to write the server software myself (it's easy these days with Ruby Mongrel, or even C++). All I just need to have some sort hosting. One solution that immediately comes to mind is Amazon EC2. But that's kind of expensive for my needs. Since the requirements are very minimal (I don't even need a website, just a web service) I think there may be a cheaper solution out there. Does anyone know of a free or cheap provider for this kind of thing?

• Are there any embedded languages that can be embedded into C# and actionscript?

  I'm looking for a embedded language that can be used to script common code between a server app written in C# and a client app written in Flash/Actionscript. It is important that the embedded language interpreter run natively in the environment it is embedded into. For example, it cannot load any external C libraries (i.e. python, neko). Does such a thing exist for these two languages? Perhaps there is some minimal interpreter that could be easily ported to both? Thanks!

• System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient cannot authenticate against a POP3 server, right?

  One of our customer seems to have a very old email system, those that ask you to authenticate to the POP3 server before allowing you to send messages through the SMTP server. Regrettably, we have to believe in what our customer tell us for we cannot access their facilities. But as far as I remember, years ago there were mail systems that once you log into the POP3, the STMP server is kept open for a few minutes for the client IP. Our application sends messages by using System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient which seems to be unable to authenticate to those kinds of servers. Is that correct? If so, what would be the simplest workaround? I was thinking of a minimal POP3 implementation (just the login part of the protocol). Would that work? Thanks in advance.

  Is it possible to provide the following type of fuctionality with informix client tools? As the user types the first two characters of a name, the drop-down list is empty. At the third character, the list fills with just the names beginning with those three characters. At the fourth character, MS-Access completes the first matching name (assuming the combo's AutoExpand is on). Once enough characters are typed to identify the customer, the user tabs to the next field. The time taken to load the combo between keystrokes is minimal. This occurs once only for each entry, unless the user backspaces through the first three characters again. If your list still contains too many records, you can reduce them by another order of magnitude by changing the value of constant conSuburbMin from 3 to 4.

• Creating a Non-Databound Report in Winforms

  I am using Visual Studio 2008 and all the components that come with it as well as Infragisitics for Winforms. I need to design a label that will print to a label printer. None of the controls are databound and will most likely be set in code eg/Label.Text = "My Heading"; as there will be minimal information on the label. One piece of information is a barcode so I need the functionality to do that, I assume I can just set the font of the label to barcode and it will do its thing. Can I just add a Crystal Report to a form design it, set the label text properties in code, tell it what printer to print to and then call report.Print(); I've had a quick go and seems not as easy as I thought.   Hello, I got a problem which I do not know how to solve: I have a set of sets A = {A_1, A_2, ..., A_n} and I have a set B. The target now is to remove as few elements as possible from B (creating B'), such that, after removing the elements for all 1 <= i <= n, A_i is not a subset of B'. For example, if we have A_1 = {1,2}, A_2 = {1,3,4}, A_3={2,5}, and B={1,2,3,4,5}, we could e.g. remove 1 and 2 from B (that would yield B'={3,4,5}, which is not a superset of one of the A_i). Does anybody know an algorithm for determining the (minimal number of) elements to be removed?
