• Seeking free ODBC database optimization tool for non-experts

  I'm a database n00b and am reading as many books as I can. I have been given responsibility for an ODBC tool where the databases were designed by a hardware engineer with some VB experience - which made him a s/w guru in the small firm at that time. Things are running slowly and I suspect that the db could have been designed better. I hope to learn enough to use Explain/Describe, etc maybe add some indices, but, in the meantime, is there any free for commercial use tool which can examine an ODBC database and suggest improvements. I'm just talking about db schema here, but maybe I should also be looking at optimizing Selects with Joins? Is there a tool for that? ODBC compliant.

  Hi, I was wondering if it is possible to make a generic webservice method in java like this: @WebMethod public <T extends Foo> void testGeneric(T data){ However when I try to consume this with a Java client I get an error stating: [ERROR] Schema descriptor {http://####/}testGeneric in message part "parameters" is not defined and could not be bound to Java. I know it is possible to make a method that takes a parameter such as List and this generates correctly using JAX-WS. Some data: tblSet SetID SetName 1 Red 2 Blue 3 Maroon 4 Yellow 5 Sky tblSetItem SetID ItemID 1 100 1 101 2 100 2 108 2 109 3 100 3 101 4 101 4 108 4 109 4 110 5 100 5 108 5 109 I'd like a way to identify which sets contain the same items. In the example above Red and Maroon contain the same items (100,101) and Blue and Sky contain the same values (100,108,109) Is there a sql query which would provide this answer?

After every match the temp table is updated which holds the id of players that played the last match and the points they earned. Next run a procedure that will match the pid from temp table with every uid of user-player table having the same pid. add the points from temp table to the count of user table for every matching uid. empty temp table. My questions is considering 200 players and 10000 users,Will this method be efficient? I am going to be using mysql for this.

• Can I change the database server and database a report is pointing to dynamically?

  I have a Crystal 2008 report that will be deployed to an InfoView server. There are four different databases the user might want to execute the report against. Each of the four databases have exactly the same schema. Only the data in each is different. Each database corresponds to a plant we have around the world. Instead of creating four different reports (each one connected to one of the four databases), am I able to dynamically change the server/database the report hits based on a value the user enters into a parameter? I'm really trying to avoid having to create four identical reports except for the database connection on each. If this isn't possible, how do developers typically deal with this sort of scenario? I would imagine it's fairly common. Thanks very much.

• Doctrine 1.2 Column Naming Conventions for Many To Many Relationships

  I'm working with an existing database schema, and trying to setup two Doctrine models with a Many to Many relationship, as described in this document When creating tables from scratch, I have no trouble getting this working. However, the existing join tables use a different naming convention that what's described in the Doctrine document. Specifically Table 1 -------------------------------------------------- table_1_id ....other columns.... Table 2 -------------------------------------------------- table_2_id ....other columns.... Join Table -------------------------------------------------- fktable1_id fktable_2_id Basically, the previous developers prefaced all forign keys with an fk. From the examples I've seen and some brief experimenting with code, it appears that Doctrine 1.2 requires that the join table use the same column names as the tables it's joining in Is my assumption correct? If so, has the situation changed in Doctrine 2? If the answers to either of the above are true, how do you configure the models so that all the columns "line up"

I want to transfer update from a table in source database to a table in destination database (two tables are of the same schema, both of them are using a single column as unique primary key). The transfer rule is (in short, the rule is keeping the destination database the same as source database because of the update of the source database), if there is a new row in source database but not in destination database, insert the row in destination database; if a row not exists in source database but exists in destination database, delete the row in destination database; if a row's content (i.e. columns other than primary key columns) changes in source database, update the new content into destination database. thanks in advance, George

• Setting a preferred item of a many-to-one in Django

  I'm trying to create a Django model that handles the following: An Item can have several Names. One of the Names for an Item is its primary Name, i.e. the Name displayed given an Item. (The model names were changed to protect the innocent.) The models.py I've got looks like: class Item(models.Model): primaryName = models.OneToOneField("Name", verbose_name="Primary Name", related_name="_unused") def __unicode__(self): return self.primaryName.name class Name(models.Model): item = models.ForeignKey(Item) name = models.CharField(max_length=32, unique=True) def __unicode__(self): return self.name class Meta: ordering = [ 'name' ] The admin.py looks like: class NameInline(admin.TabularInline): model = Name class ItemAdmin(admin.ModelAdmin): inlines = [ NameInline ] admin.site.register(Item, ItemAdmin) It looks like the database schema is working fine, but I'm having trouble with the admin, so I'm not sure of anything at this point. My main questions are: How do I explain to the admin that primaryName needs to be one of the Names of the item being edited? Is there a way to automatically set primaryName to the first Name found, if primaryName is not set, since I'm using inline admin for the names?

  Not sure what the correct title for this question should be. I have the following schema: Matters have a one-many relationship to WorkItems. WorkItems have a one-one (or one-zero) relationship to LineItems. I am trying to create the following relation between Matters and WorkItems Matter.unbilled_work_items = orm.relation(WorkItem, primaryjoin = (Matter.id == WorkItem.matter_id) and (WorkItem.line_item_id == None), foreign_keys = [WorkItem.matter_id, WorkItem.line_item_id], viewonly=True ) This throws: AttributeError: '_Null' object has no attribute 'table' That seems to be saying that the second clause in the primaryjoin returns an object of type _Null, but it seems to be expecting something with a "table" attribute. This seems like it should be pretty straightforward to me, am I missing something obvious?

  Hi Guys, Is possible in Solr 1.4 to specify which similarity class to use for every search within a single index? Let's say, I got 2 type of search (keyword and brand). For keyword search, I want to use the DefaultSimilarity class. But, for brand search, I want to use my CustomSimilarity class. I've been modifying the schema.xml to specify a single similarity class to use. But, I came to this requirement that I have to use 2 different similarity classes. • Outlook Mobile Service Configuration Issue

  I am working on writing a OMS implementation. I have verified that service is compliant with the service and schema definitions. When trying to set up the account in Outlook 2007 to test the service, it allows me to use an https address, but not an http address. According to the documentation (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb277363.aspx) "The URL of the OMS Web service can be either http or https, but it is https if not otherwise specified" I have not been able to find any doucmentation that would explain why Outlook will not even let me try to do anything in the wizard if the service url does not start with https. The error that it returns when a http address is entered is: The web service address is incorrect or corrupted. Check the web service address or contact your administrator I have also tried creating a temporary cert on my local machine to test the service, but outlook is rejecting the cert because it is not valid. Is there any way to test the service or run it over http?

• How can this be done with (N)Hibernate?

  I'm creating a windows forms application with NHibernate. It's an MDI application, so there is no limit to how many forms the user can have open at the same time (probably many). For most forms I want to have an "OK" and a "Cancel" button. Both close the form, but "OK" also saves the modified data to the DB. The forms can be pretty complex, and the modifications are likely to touch a whole graph of objects, adding some, deleting some, and changing some more. It would be good if the changes could be automatically detected and persisted as needed, without the need to manually keep track of each of them. What would be a good way to do this? Extra information: I can make whatever DB schema I want. I'm using MSSQL 2008 and currently have decided for GUID primary keys (with guid.comb generator) and a TIMESTAMP column for optimistic concurrency. I tried to simply set FlushMode of a NHibernate ISession to Never, doing all modifications as needed, and then calling Flush() if the user clicked OK. But that didn't work.

• CakePHP: How can I disable auto-increment on Model.id?

  CakePHP 1.3.0, mysqli I have a model, Manifest, whose ID should be the unique number from a printed form. However, with Manifest.id set as the primary key, CakePHP is helping me by setting up auto-increment on the field. Is there a way to flag the field via schema.php and/or elsewhere to disable auto-increment? I need just a plain, old primary key without it. The only other solution I can imagine is adding on a separate manifest number field and changing foreign keys in a half dozen other tables. A bit wasteful and not as intuitive.

  I've a fairly large database project which contains nine databases and one database with a fairly large schema. This project takes a large amount of time to build and I'm about to pull my hair out. We'd like to keep our database source controlled, but having a hard getting the other devs to use the project and build the database project before checking in just because it takes so long to build. It is seriously crippling our work so I'm look for alternatives. Maybe something can be done with Redgate's SQL Compare? I think maybe the only drawback here is that it doesn't validate syntax? Anyone's thoughts/suggestions would be most appreciated.

• Creating a db driven primary navigation in django?

  I find that it's pretty common most people hardcode the navigation into their templates, but I'm dealing with a pretty dynamic news site which might be better off if the primary nav was db driven. So I was thinking of having a Navigation model where each row would be a link. link_id INT primary key link_name varchar(255) url varchar(255) order INT active boolean If anyone's done something similar in the past, would you say this sort of schema is good enough? I also wanted for there to be an optional dropdown in the admin near the url field so that a user could choose a Category model's slug since category links would be common, but I'm not quite sure how that would be possible.

• Which .NET exception to throw for invalid database state?

  I am writing some data access code and I want to check for potentially "invalid" data states in the database. For instance, I am returning a widget out of the database and I only expect one. If I get two, I want to throw an exception. Even though referential integrity should prevent this from occurring, I do not want to depend on the DBAs never changing the schema. I would like to use the System.IO.InvalidDataException, except that I am not dealing with a file stream so it would be misleading. I ended up going with a generic applicationexception. Anyone have a better idea?

I have the situation where an Account can have up to two Settlement Instructions and this have been modeled like so: The slim-ed down schema: Account --------------------- Id AccountName PrimarySettlementId (nullable) AlternateSettlementId (nullable) SettlementInstruction ---------------------- Id Name The output I want is a single result set with a select statement something along the lines of this which will allow me to construct some java objects in my Spring row mapper: select Account.Id as accountId, Account.AccountName as accountName, s1.Id as primarySettlementId, s1.Name as primarySettlementName, s2.Id as alternateSettlementId, s2.Name as alternateSettlementName I've tried various things but cannot find a way to get the result set merged in to one where the primary and alternate FK's are not null. Finally I have searched the forum, but nothing quite seems to fit with what I need.

• Merging tables in MySQL - sum up columns

  I have an interesting problem, that i am sure has a simple answer, but i can't seem to find it in the docs. I have two separate database tables, on different servers. They are both identical table schema with the same primary keys. I want to merge the tables together on one server. But, if the row on Server1.Table1 exists in Server2.Table2 then sum up the totals in the columns i specify. Table1{ column_pk, counter }; "test1", 3 "test2", 4 Table2{ column_pk, counter }; "test1", 5 "test2", 6 So after i merge i want: "test1",8 "test2",10 Basically i need to do a mysqldump but instead of it kicking out raw INSERT statements, i need to do a INSERT..ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE statements.   Since Visual Studio 2010 is slated for release in March of 2010 and HTML 5 is now starting to be used even more widely, I would like to know if Visual Studio will ship with HTML 5 templates, standard controls and support for the more common markup? A definition for support of HTML 5 would be that any new version of Visual Studio should have similar support for code-completion, validation and markup that is currently supported for HTML 4.01 and XHTML 1.0 and 1.1. Update From the Visual Web Develolper Team Blog: HTML 5 intellisense and validation schema for Visual Studio 2008 and Visual Web Developer is for downloading. Follow the instructions posted on the page to install the new scheme. Seems like the Visual Studio Team will be supporting HTML 5 after all.

  Hi all, I'm a very young software architect. Now I'm working in a very large and I have to lead a group of developers to rewrite all the mortgage system of the bank. I'm looking at database tables and I realize that there is no any data model, neither documentation. The worst part is that there are about 1000 tables in dev environment, and like 600 in production. I trust more the production environment, but anyway, what can I do? I mean, I can suicide me or something, but is there any good reverse engineering tool, so at least I could get the schema definition with the relations between tables and comments extracted from the fields?   Hi Masters, Good Day, I am new and very naive to Oracle DB. I am using Oracle 10G. Let me explain to you. I have one source database named ( DB1) and Target Database named (DB2). I have 2 schema's named dbs1 and dbs2 in the source database (DB1). I have exported both the database schemas in Source Database (DB1) and imported it successfully into the Target Database (DB2). Now I face a challenge in synchronizing these database schemas every time from Source DB (DB1) to Target DB (DB2). Can anyone please help in letting me know how can achieve this synchronization? • How to remove duplicate records in a table?

  I've got a table in a testing DB that someone apparently got a little too trigger-happy on when running INSERT scripts to set it up. The schema looks like this: ID UNIQUEIDENTIFIER TYPE_INT SMALLINT SYSTEM_VALUE SMALLINT NAME VARCHAR MAPPED_VALUE VARCHAR It's supposed to have a few dozen rows. It has about 200,000, most of which are duplicates in which TYPE_INT, SYSTEM_VALUE, NAME and MAPPED_VALUE are all identical and ID is not. Now, I could probably make a script to clean this up that creates a temporary table in memory, uses INSERT .. SELECT DISTINCT to grab all the unique values, TRUNCATE the original table and then copy everything back. But is there a simpler way to do it, like a DELETE query with something special in the WHERE clause?
