• Is this slow WPF TextBlock performance expected?

  Hi, I am doing some benchmarking to determine if I can use WPF for a new product. However, early performance results are disappointing. I made a quick app that uses data binding to display a bunch of random text inside of a list box every 100 ms and it was eating up ~15% CPU. So I made another quick app that skipped the data binding/data template scheme and does nothing but update 10 TextBlocks that are inside of a ListBox every 100 ms (the actual product wouldn't require 100 ms updates, more like 500 ms max, but this is a stress test). I'm still seeing ~10-15% CPU usage. Why is this so high? Is it because of all the garbage strings? I'm seeing between 36 and 66MB/s of throughput, which seems somewhat slow to me. What are normal throughput ranges for binary data on a local socket connection?

  I'm writing a specialised crawler and parser for internal use and I require the ability to take a screenshot of a web page in order to check what colours are being used throughout. The program will take in around ten web addresses and will save them as a bitmap image, from there I plan to use LockBits in order to create a list of the five most used colours within the image. To my knowledge it's the easiest way to get the colours used within a web page but if there is an easier way to do it please chime in with your suggestions. Anyway, I was going to use this program until I saw the price tag. I'm also fairly new to C#, having only used it for a few months. Can anyone provide me with a solution to my problem of taking a screenshot of a web page in order to extract the colour scheme? EDIT: Sorry for not getting back to this sooner, but I've been busy with some other things. Anyway, the code seems to work well, but the problem I am having right now is that I am running it within a form, and naturally with Application.Run() being called I cannot run two instances of the same form at once. It recommended Form.showDialog() but that broke everything. • Standard way to hash an RSA key?

  What's the algorithm for creating hash (sha-1 or MD5) of an RSA public key? Is there a standard way to do this? Hash just the modulus, string addition of both and then take a hash? Is SHA-1 or MD5 usually used? I want to use it to ensure that I got the right key (have the sender send a hash, and I calculate it myself), and log said hash so I always know which exact key I used when I encrypt the payload.

• WP7 silverlight custom control using popup

  Hi guys, I'm creating a custom datepicker, I have a textbox, once clicked it opens a calendar within a popup. What I want to do is change the size of the popup so it shows my whole calendar, but I can't manage to change it..., I've tried using Height, Width, MinHeight, MinWidth... but it doesn't work, the popup keep showing with a fixed size. The thing is that my popup's parent property isn't evaluated since it has expression issues (according to debugger), so I'm sure my popup's parent isn't the main screen( say layout grid). How can I for example make my popup open within a specific context ? • How do I determine which control fired an event?

  I have the Value Changed event of two UISliders (both of which have referencing outlets) wired up to the following method: -(IBAction) sliderMoved:(id) sender {} How can I determine which slider was moved so that I can get its value and update the corresponding label? Am I missing something here?

• Long Running Stored Proc - Report Progress Using BackgroundWorker & Timer

  While a long running stored proc (RMR_Seek) is executing (called via a Linq-To-SQL data context) I am trying to call another stored proc (RMR_GetLatestModelMessage) to check a table for the latest status message. The long running stored proc updates the table in question with status messages as it executes. I want to display the status message on a message panel to advise the user of the status of the execution of Proc_A. For various reasons it is not possible to determine how long RMR_Seek will take to execute so a progress bar with percentage increments is not feasible. I thought I'd found the way to do it by calling the long running stored proc from in a BackgroundWorker process DoWork event handler. This worked fine and allowed me to update my message panel with some dummy status messages that were NOT obtained via Proc_B while Proc_A was running. However now that I have tried to implement this fully by calling Proc_B to obtain the status messages I am running into problems that seem to be related to the mix of the backgroundworker and my System.Windows.Forms.Timer. An extract of the code I am using is below. I have tried many different ways around this but each one seems to present its own set of problems. The code below is problematic in the bw_DoWork event. The RMR_Seek stored proc gets called but does not execute properly - it also seems to be inconsistent as to whether _IsCompleted gets set to true. Any ideas? Let me make this more clear: a MVC page uses the spring part trying to load a lazy-init service which constructor wants a connection string through a static property like this: <object id="promotionRepos" type="ECommerce.Data.AdoNet.Promotions.PromotionRepos, ECommerce.Data.AdoNet" lazy-init="true"> <constructor-arg name="provider"> <null /> </constructor-arg> <constructor-arg name="connStr"> <object type="ECommerce.ERP.DAL.DBConn, ECommerce.ERP.DAL" factory-method="get_ConnString" /> </constructor-arg> <property name="RefreshInterval" value="00:00:10" /> </object> the timeout part is some what irrelevent to all others. see this in the first exception: Shopping_Shopping.Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e) +10 it's another page at all. And also, ECommerce.PMethod.Sql.SqlConns.Open() uses its own connection string, not the one loaded by spring, it's different module from diffrent team. And I am sure the connection string is correct. And, this ysod cames up randomly. Sometimes nothing is wrong, and sometimes, it appears. I thought there could be something wrong with my database or the network/firewall, I will check it later, but now I want understand this tricky stack trace.
