This is a minor release that addresses some items found immediately after release that have now completed our test passes with those who reported them. Wikipedia defines it as: Natural user interface, or NUI, is the common parlance used by designers and developers of computer interfaces to refer to a user interface that is effectively invisible, or becomes invisible with successive learned interactions, to its users. The word natural is used because most computer interfaces use artificial control devices whose operation has to be learned. A NUI relies on a user being able to carry out relatively natural motions, movements or gestures that they quickly discover control the computer application or manipulate the on-screen content. The most descriptive identifier of a NUI is the lack of a physical keyboard and/or mouse. In our interview Josh demystifies what NUI is, makes a distinction between gestures and manipulations, and talks about what is possible today for NUI development.     This a quick post to announce a few upcoming events for those in the UK. I’ll be presenting in Glasgow, Scotland on March 25th I’m doing a free 5 hour presentation in Glasgow on March 25th. I’ll be covering VS 2010, ASP.NET 4, ASP.NET Web Forms 4, ASP.NET MVC 2, Silverlight and potentially show off a few new things that haven’t been announced yet.   • Not able to save Global navigation - SharePoint 2007

    I have migrated my sitecollection(migsitecollection) to different farm using content deployment job. http://vsmoss/sites/migsitecollection I used collaboration portal to create it.Its working fine from where I migrated it but after running content deployment jobs my new migrated site global navigation settings are not getting saved when I am trying ot change them by going in settings-Navigation and in logs I can see this error The SPNavigation store is likely corrupt. I saw on net the solution for this problem is changing onet.xml and running script on sql database for the site, I am eager to better answer than this but if its the same I have few doubts on it: First,As my site template is not customised its the collobartion portal so I am not sure where exactly to change the onet.xml. Second, I am using the same database as of my webapplication running that script would not affect anything else on the main site of mine?

  • Windows 7 - Add folder to Explorer Favorites navigation pane from the Command Line

    In Windows 7 is there a way to add a location to the Explorer Favorites navigation pane from the command line? I'm working with systems that are frequently re-imaged, and I would like to automate adding a number of favorite folders to explorer. I imagine these favorites are also stored in the registry. If someone knows where, I could probably automate managing them through the reg command, although this is less than ideal. I've looked at a number of locations related to explorer suggested here, but haven't found them yet.   • zend_navigation and modules

    Hi, I am developing an application at the moment with zend and I have seperated the app into modules. The default module is the main site where unlogged in users access and have free reign to look around. When you log in, depending on the user type you either go to module A or module B, which is controlled by simple ACLs. If you have access to Module A you can not access Module B and visa versa. Both user types can see the default module. Now I want to use Zend_Navigation to manage the entire applications navigation in all modules. I am not sure how to go about this, as all the examples that I have seen work within a module or very simple application. I've tried to have my navigation.xml file look like this: <configdata> <navigation> <label>Home</label> <controller>index</controller> <action>index</action> <module>default</module> <pages> <tour> <label>tour</label> <controller>tour</controller> <action>index</action> <module>default</module> </tour> <blog> <label>blog</label> <url>http://blog.mysite.com</url> </blog> <support> <label>Support</label> <controller>support</controller> <action>index</action> <module>default</module> </support> </pages> </navigation> </configdata> This if fine for the default module, but how would I go about the other modules to this navigation page? Each module has it's own home page, and others etc. Would I be better off adding a unique navigation.xml file for each module that is loaded in the preDispatch plugin that I have written to handle my ACLs?? Or keep them in one massive navigation file? Any tips would be fantastic. Thanks, Grant

  • Very slow performance deserializing using datacontractserializer in a Silverlight Application.

    Here is the situation: Silverlight 3 Application hits an asp.net hosted WCF service to get a list of items to display in a grid. Once the list is brought down to the client it is cached in IsolatedStorage. This is done by using the DataContractSerializer to serialize all of these objects to a stream which is then zipped and then encrypted. When the application is relaunched, it first loads from the cache (reversing the process above) and the deserializes the objects using the DataContractSerializer.ReadObject() method. All of this was working wonderfully under all scenarios until recently with the entire "load from cache" path (decrypt/unzip/deserialize) taking hundreds of milliseconds at most. On some development machines but not all (all machines Windows 7) the deserialize process - that is the call to ReadObject(stream) takes several minutes an seems to lock up the entire machine BUT ONLY WHEN RUNNING IN THE DEBUGGER in VS2008. Running the Debug configuration code outside the debugger has no problem. One thing that seems to look suspicious is that when you turn on stop on Exceptions, you can see that the ReadObject() throws many, many System.FormatException's indicating that a number was not in the correct format. When I turn off "Just My Code" thousands of these get dumped to the screen. None go unhandled. These occur both on the read back from the cache AND on a deserialization at the conclusion of a web service call to get the data from the WCF Service. HOWEVER, these same exceptions occur on my laptop development machine that does not experience the slowness at all. And FWIW, my laptop is really old and my desktop is a 4 core, 6GB RAM beast. Again, no problems unless running under the debugger in VS2008. Anyone else seem this? Any thoughts?   • Why does Silverlight 4 ClientHttp WebRequest prompt the user for a login and password?

    One of the new features of the client http stack in Silverlight 4 is the ability to supply network credentials. When I use this feature Windows shows a "Windows Security" message box that prompts the user for a login and password (text in the box is "The server xx at xx requires a username and password. Warning: This server is requesting that your username and password be sent in an insecure manner (basic authentication without a secure connection)."). I'm setting the login and password as shown below so I'm not sure why this is displayed. My code is: var request = WebRequestCreator.ClientHttp.Create(new Uri("http://myserver:8080/gui/?list=1")); request.Credentials = new NetworkCredential("login", "password"); request.BeginGetResponse(new AsyncCallback(OnRequestComplete), request); If I enter the username and password into the messagebox the request completes successfully. For a number of reasons I'd rather prompt the user for the login and password so I'd like to avoid the messagebox if possible. My setup is Silverlight 4 final, VS 2010 final, Windows 7 x86. The application is out of browser with elevated permissions.

    Hi I'm having a problem passing an entity collection back from LLBLGen to silverlight. My contract looks like this. I don't even know if this is possible. My web service code looks like this: public IEnumerable GetCustomer(long custId, string acctKey) { var toReturn = new WaterWorksCustomersEntity(custId, acctKey); using (var adapter = new DataAccessAdapter()) { adapter.ConnectionString = "data source=CWCPROD.cwc.local;user.."; adapter.FetchEntity(toReturn); } IList customers = new List(); customers.Add(toReturn); return customers; } On the silverlight client I'm doing ... var client = new Service1Client(); client.GetCustomerCompleted +=new EventHandler(client_GetCustomerCompleted); client.GetCustomerAsync(2,"110865"); The compilation is failing with this error: Error 1 The type or namespace name 'ArrayOfXElement' does not exist in the namespace 'AppointmentClientSL.ServiceReference1' (are you missing an assembly reference?) c:\work\Appointment\Appointment\AppointmentClientSL\Service References\ServiceReference1\Reference.cs 63 54 AppointmentClientSL It looks like SL is not able to deal with the data the web service is returning. Can anyone help???

  • How do I position an ellipse on a Silverlight Grid?

    I am creating a silverlight application which will allow you to click at two places on the screen and will draw an ellipse whose major axis starts and ends at the click locations. The clickable area is a Silverlight Grid control. Currently: When you first click, I am: Dropping a marker at the click point. Creating an ellipse and parenting it to the Grid. Creating and setting an AngleTransform on the ellipse. As you move the mouse, I am: Calculating the distance to the first click point. Setting the Width of the ellipse to this length. Calculating the angle of a line to the click point and the Grid's X-Axis. Setting the Ellipse's AngleTransform Angle to this angle. So far, so good. The ellipse is displayed, and its length and angle of rotation follow the mouse as it moves. However, the major axis of the ellipse is offset from the click point. How do I position the Ellipse so its major axis starts at the click point and ends at the current mouse position?

  • Designing a silverlight dashboard with mef - is it possible? (with dynamic loading of xaps)

    Hello! I am just trying to wrap my head around MEF. And as I am really going to love it ( I guess ) I started my first sample project and immediatly stumbled into a big problem and now I am asking myself if I can use MEF for my scenario at all and that is the following: Imagine that one got some kind of dashboard with, let's say, five regions and above each region there are two comboboxes. The values in the first combobox represent different possible views (for example, chartControl, tableControl, pictureControl, ...) and the values of the second combobox represents the different data sources for the currently selected control. As the controls are very big in size one wants to download them as needed. If the user selects one comboboxitem the corresponding control xap should be loaded and displayed in this specific region. If the user selectes another control in the same combobox the control should be removed from the visualtree and the next control should be downloaded and displayed. If the user changes the selection in a different combobox the corresponding control should be loaded again only in this specific region, with perhaps different data. And to make it a little more interesting - as this is some kind of dashboard one can change the layout from five regions to - for example - ten regions. I've seen the video "MVVM with MEF in Silverlight Video Tutorial Part 2: Plugins and Metadata" ( http://csharperimage.jeremylikness.com/2010/03/mvvm-with-mef-in-silverlight-video_09.html ) but he is using an ItemsControl and is working with Visibility and he only got ONE region.   • In Silverlight 3 how can I get the call to HtmlPage.Plugin.SetStyleAttribute() call to call other co

    I'm trying to take a snapshot of my Silverlight control using WriteableBitmap and it works fine, however, it only takes a snapshot of what is showing. I'm trying to resize the Silverlight control so it will show everything and then take a screenshot, however, the code doesn't resize the control until after the code after the call all runs which is the snapshot code... I can get this work using a timer to fire the snapshot after the other code has caused the resize but I'm wondering if there is a better way. The HtmlPage.Plugin.SetStyleAttribute call has to be called from the UI thread so I'm assuming that's where the problem is. The fact that it is being dispatched onto the UI thread while the rest of the code is not and so the other code is being run first. Is there anyway to create a new event or attach to the call to determine when it has been run to then fire off my snapshot code? I have the following code: private void btnTakeSnapshot_Click(object sender, System.Windows.RoutedEventArgs e) { if (CurrentContractAction != null) { string heightBefore = HtmlPage.Plugin.GetStyleAttribute("height"); HtmlPage.Plugin.SetStyleAttribute("height", string.Format("{0}px", "1800")); //this line doesn't change the height until after the "TakeSnapshot" code is run for some reason, I'm thinking it is because it is most likely dispatched to the UI thread :( and the following code is not run on the UI thread Snapshot snapshot = new Snapshot(string.Format("Action_Schedule_{0}", CurrentContractAction.Title), LayoutRoot, LayoutRoot, busyIndicatorDataGrid); snapshot.HideElements(btnViewGanttChart, btnSave, btnEditAction, btnFullScreen, btnTakeSnapshot, btnLockAndSubmit); snapshot.TakeSnapshot(); snapshot.ResetElementsVisibility(); HtmlPage.Plugin.SetStyleAttribute("height", string.Format("{0}px", heightBefore)); } } Thanks, John

  • Handling null values and missing object properties in Silverlight 4

    Before Silverlight 4 to bind a data object to the UI and display a message associated with either a null value or if the binding path was wrong, you would need to write a Converter.  In Silverlight 4 we find the addition of the markup extensions TargetNullValue and FallbackValue that allows us to display a value when a null value is found in the bound to property and display a value when the property being bound to is not found. This post will show you how to use both markup extensions. Steps: 1. Create a new Silverlight 4 application 2. Run the application and see the person name displayed as defined for the person object, the expected string displayed for the TargetNullValue when no value exists for the boudn property and the expected string displayed for the FallbackValue when the property bound to is not found on the bound object. It's that easy!
