• RAID setup for maximizing data retention and read speed

  My goals are simple: maximize data retention safety, and maximize read speeds. My first instinct is to do a a three drive software RAID 1. I have only used fakeraid RAID 1 in the past and it was terrible (would have led to data loss actually if it weren't for backups) Would you say software raid 1 or a cheap actual hardware raid card? OS will be linux. Could I start with a two drive raid 1 and add a third drive on the fly? Can I hot swap? Can I pull one of the drives and throw it into a new machine and be able to read all the data? I do not want a situation where I have a raid card fail and have to try and find the same chipset in order to read my data (which i am assuming can happen) Please clarify any points on which it sounds like I have no idea what I am talking about, as I am admittedly inexperienced here. (My hardest lesson was fakeraid lol) Thanks!

  I have Desktop with configuration Pentium 4,945 intel chipset board,dual booting with win 7 and ubuntu 10.10 (no graphics card) Recently i purchased Dell IN2020M 20" with native resolution of 1600x900 but my display allow maximum of 1024x768 because of this when i play any video in full screen mode it doesn't play smoothly or frames are refreshed jerkily I have tried updating my VGA driver but its doesn't helping me much. Is there any way to solve this problem ? 1if i want to replace monitor what maximum resolution should i buy ? 2if i want to upgrade(graphics card/motherboard) my desktop what is the minimum configuration to support the current system. I can see in the debugger that it loads fine, but then when I get to detaching, I can't make anything beyond the User object load. (No Decks, no Cards). At first I tried without a transaction to simply "touch" all the fields on the attached object before detaching, but that didn't help. Then I tried adding everything to the default fetch group, but that just generated warnings about GAE not supporting joins. I tried setting the fetch plan's max fetch depth to -1, but that didn't do it. • Which has a faster data transfer rate? WIFI (tablet or cell phone, not LTE) or MicroSD (Class 10)?

  Which of the two methods of dta transfer trasfers data at a faster rate for smartphones and tablets? Standard WIFI, or MicroSD Cards? I wonder if it would be actually faster to access data on external storage then it would be to have the MicroSD card in my smartphone or tablet. Currently I have a class 10 32GB MicroSD card in my cell phone. I am looking to get the new Google Nexus tablet but it does not offer expandable internal storage. I wonder if that's really a detriment; because if WIFI is faster than MicroSD, then it would matter almost none at all that you couldn't expand the storage internally. If the case is that WIFI is faster, and people caught onto this, then people could save a lot of money on lower memory ipads/iphones/ipods, tablets, and smartphones!

  My 1760 has a WIC1-T1 card in Slot 0 and the slot 0 "OK" light is lit. When the router boots it shows that it sees the T1 card. I would like to configure my T1. I received the following details from my ISP: * Removed IP's IP Version: IPv4 Router Interface: edge1.mia1 -- t1-2/1/0:2:13 -- Switch Port: Vlan: WAN Network: 4.59.?.?/30 Level3 Side: 4.59.?.?   For better compatibility and performance in games I'm thinking about installing Windows additionally to Linux. I have security concerns about this, though. Note: "Windows" in the remaining text includes not only the OS but also any software running on it. Regardless of whether it comes included or is additionally installed, whether it is started intentionally or unintentionally (virus, malware). Is there an easy way to achieve the following requirements: Windows MUST NOT be able to kill my linux partition or my data disk neither single files (virus infection) nor overwriting the whole disk Windows MUST NOT be able to read data disk (- extra protection against spyware) Linux may or may not have access to the windows partition both Linux and Windows should have full access to the graphics card this rules out desktop VM solutions for gaming I want the manufacturer's windows graphics card driver Regarding Windows to be unable to destroy my linux install: this is not just the usual paranoia, that has happened to me in the past. So I don't accept "no ext4 driver" as an argument. Once bitten, twice shy. And even if destruction targeted at specific (linux) files is nearly impossible, there should be no way to shred the whole partition. I may accept the risk of malware breaking out of a barrier (e.g. VM) around the whole windows box, though. Currently I have a system disk (SSD) and a data disk (HDD), both SATA. I expect I have to add another disk. If i don't: even better. My CPU is a Intel Core i5, with VT-x and VT-d available, though untested. Ideas I've had so far: deactivate or hide other HDs until reboot at low level possible? can the boot loader (grub) do this for me? tiny VM layer: load windows in a VM that provides access to almost all hardware, except the HDs any ready made software solution for this? Preferably free. as I said: the main problem seems to be to provide full access to the graphics card hardware switch to cut power to disks commercial products expensive and lots of warnings against cheap home built solutions preferably all three hard disks with one switch (one push) mobile racks - won't wear of daily swapping be a problem?

• Error 5A - Internal CPU Error

  So I built myself a pc for the first time. The machine has been running properly, and without issue, since March of this year. Today after an hour or so of gaming the machine shutdown without warning. Any attempts to reboot have been unsuccessful. I have managed to get it to post, twice, but it doesn't get as far as the OS before it shuts off again. I pulled the second video card so I could see the error code LED and it appears to be showing 5A which matches to "Internal CPU Error". Am I looking at a failed CPU or is this a symptom of another issue? Any feedback you can provide is most appreciated. • How to check the OS is running on bare metal and not in virtualized environment created by BIOS?

  Is there any software available as a Linux, *BSD, or Windows program or boot-image to check (or guess with good probability) the environment an operating system is loaded onto is genuine bare metal and not already virtualized? Given recent information from various sources, including supposed to be E.Snowden leaks, I'm curious about the security of my PC-s, even about those that don't have on-board BMC. How it could be possible and why? See for example Blue Pill, and a number of papers. With a little assistance from network card firmware, which is also loadable on popular card models, such hypervisor could easily spy on me resulting in PGP, Tor, etc. exercises futile.

• Can I use VT-D with a windows host for a VM?

  I've got a fairly beefy gaming system that I also run occational virtual machines on. It runs windows 8 and the built in hyper V virtual machine software at the moment and has a core i7 3770 (which unlike the unlocked model, should support VT-D), an Asus P8Z77V and a gforce 660 video card(also asus). I figure that if I could use VT-D I could add a cheap dedicated 3d card for a VM, in case I wanted somewhat more than the 'basics'. I know KVM and Xen support this to some level on linux, but can I do so on windows? I'm open to switching VM software if need be.

• Windows freezes, showing a random color or pattern

  I have a PC with windows 7, and I'm experiencing random freezes with increasing frequency. After some time (from 30 minutes to a few hours) the screen will shows a random color or pattern (vertical lines) and nothing works anymore, I need to reboot manually. I've checked the events log, but nothing is shown except for the unexpected reboot. I've tested the RAM with Memtest86+ 4.20, and the graphics card with FurMark 1.10.3, no errors have been found. I've updated the graphic drivers and openned the case to remove dust, but the issue is still there. Also, the problem doesn't seem to arise when I'm playing games fullscreen, but when I'm surfing the web, using itunes, or coding. My hardware is as follows : intel core i5 750 CPU, ATI Radeon HD 5670 graphics card, ASUSTeK P7P55D motherboard, two 2Gb KINGSTON DDR3 ram sticks, 2 SATA hard drives, a Netgear dongle for wifi.

  Well this is the first Laptop I have ever worked on with a dedicated video card. So, there is no video going to the laptops monitor or to an external. Ripped it apart found the gpu and now am stuck. I cant decide if its the gpu that has gone out or the motherboard. Any one have any suggestions? If it were a desktop I would throw in one of my spare video cards. Mainly I don't want to order the video card and eat the $50 if its the motherboard.

• Motherboard with embedded hdmi problems with Windows 8 Consumer Preview (64bit)

  I'm specifically referring to GIGABYTE GA-E7AUM-DS2H LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 9400 HDMI Micro ATX with a Core 2 Duo chip. This computer is connected to a Sharp Aquous TV using HDMI. It all worked fine with Windows 7 64 bit. In Device Manager I see GeForce 9400 and have installed the latest NVidia drivers (295.73 WHQL). However, when I click on the change the screen resolution to 1920x1080, I see that Windows 8 thinks that it's using some other graphics card with Microsoft Basic Display Driver. This was made clear, when I tried to launch the NVidia tools and it claimed that the current monitor (in this case my TV) wasn't attached to the GeForce 9400 card. In Device Manager, there's a "Coprocessor" and "Unknown device" without drivers, but I've no idea what they are. I've run the original CD that the motherboard came with no success. Any ideas?

  Monitor is a Dell 3008wfp. Very nice. Max resolution 2560 x 1600. Video card is an ATI Radeon HD 4350. I like it because it was cheap and is fanless. (Noise bugs me.) I would like to switch from DVI to HDMI, but when I use HDMI, the resolution drops to 1920 x 1080. Do I need to change out my video card to get the full resolution? How can I pick one that will do the max resolution?

• Windows 7/8 can't connect to an N Router

  I have a router running OpenWRT backfire, with N and A/B/G being broadcast. A linux laptop, and a Mac laptop can see the N network and connect to it (or at least they could last weekend). But there is now a Windows 7 Desktop with a B/G/N wireless card, and a Windows 8 Laptop with a B/G/N wireless card that can't see the N network only the B/G broadcast. The B/G and N have different SSID's and Encryption ( WEP and WPA2 PSK respectively ). The N SSID isn't even visible. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to troubleshoot further? • What can cause a black or blank screen when pressing logout or switch user in windows 7

  The situation I have here is related to a brand new dell machine with a GTX260 video card. Put simply after one user logs in when that user either 'switch users' or 'logs out' windows goes to a black/blank screen. The TV screen that is used with this computer previously functioned fine with fast user switching on an XP machine. The new computer is windows 7. The TV is not outputting any error messages like 'no signal' or anything else that would be displayed if the computer was off. You can fix the problem by cycling the input on television, after cycling the input the welcome screen appears as normal. What I want to know is what on earth is windows doing that would cause the video card to stop sending the same signal to the monitor when the user logs off or switches users. I mean as far as I can tell the resolution is identical between windows and the welcome screen. Or perhaps if somebody has experienced this before a fix would be great too.

• Macbook not connecting to WIFI

  I have been having this problem all week. My Macbook aluminium can't see my wifi network. I have changed the channel to one that isn't being used by neighbours and my iphone picks it up straight away. In other words, the router is fine. It's just the macbook can't see it. This is driving me nuts if anyone can help... My airport card details...   I'm thinking of bying 1 or more flash drives or an SD card to use with the readyboost function on by 64bit Windows 7 machine. I have a few questions regarding it before i put my hand in my pocket and buy anything. If i go ahead I would be using the fastest available flash/SD. I have 6GB of RAM current installed so will readyboost make any difference to boot / program load times? Will 2 x 2GB flash drives be quicker than 1 x 4GB or is the limitation on the motherboard?   I'm having trouble with my laptop Internet connection. It's patchy at best and resets or freezes a lot. The signal strength is also random. I thought it might be a driver issue but now I don't know. Three other computers using the same wireless network run well. I've switched out wireless routers so I don't think it's the router. I thought it might be the laptop's internal wireless card but I just bought an external USB network card and I'm still having problems. • Motherboard dual gfx power question

  1st, I am software guy. I do not do hardware. So I know to you hardware geeks, this is a dumb question. I just inherited a box with a ASUS P5GZ-MX mother board. I have attempted to install two nVidia PCI video cards. I put a 750w power supply in the system to be sure I have enough power. With no extra video cards, the 3.3 v shows normal. When I put one card in, the 3.3 goes to 3.5-3.6 and flashes red (over voltage) about 30% of the time. When I put the 2nd card in, it goes to 3.73 v and stays red all the time. Any Ideas why the voltage goes up when I add cards instead of going down? More Importantly, is this dangerous to the system?

Someone (I don't remember who of course) told me there are high gain antennas that will make it possible to get a better reception (and throughput). I believe he said they are adaptors with "high gain" antennas. He also told me he uses it in hotels when he has a bad WLAN reception. When he connects that card the reception and speed is a lot better all of a sudden. But can someone explain me in understandable language what that is and what the thing with high gain, dB, dBi and mW is all about please? What type of card do we need? On like this or this?

• Maximize window in one display

  I'm using an NVIDIA Quadra FX 1700 card and have a dual monitor system. I want to maximize a window so that it is maximized in one monitor not across both monitors but I don't seem to have that as an option. Right now I just minimize & expand it so it fills one monitor at a time. Any suggestions? I'm using Windows XP Professional on a desktop. Maybe it's not possible since it seems that both monitors are connected to the graphics card and Windows only sees one monitor.

• My Computer will not turn on?

  I recently built a gaming pc. It was working fine before the following events: I installed a graphics card driver update then: in windows it said that the user experience index needed to be refreshed, so i started the test and somewhere in the middle of the test my pc just switched off. No shutting down just stopped. Now it won't turn back on. I have checked its plugged in and the switch on psu is down, i tried a different power cable and i checked all the connections. When i press the power button nothing happens, no fans no lights no post beep.
