  For building apps from source like git or rails I've seen recommendations to install in both /opt or /usr/local. From what I've read so for, the designated use for both is about the same and it amounts to merely a style issue. Is there any practical difference? Best practices?

• OpenLayers .containsPoint after pan

  I've seem to have hit a bug or i have overlooked something. I written some code that enumerates through all the vector features on a OpenLayers Vector layer - to check if the mouse is inside a vector feature - if so then it displays some info based on the feature. I had to write my own methods to do this because the existing OpenLayers Controls( select etc) stop after finding a feature under the mouse, and i the possibility of several features being stacked on top of one another. My problem is that the .containsPoint method seems to be using coords from before a 'pan'. After zooming in or out the geometry seems to be in the right place and .containsPoint is works correctly when I wave the mouse over the map. Do I need to do something after the map has been panned to update something( feature's geometry)

This line works in Ubuntu's terminal, but the Mac terminal seems to be far behind. Unfortunately, I copied this snippet from some site, so I'm not sure how it exactly works. • Why are Views loaded from nibs being placed 20 pixels down from the status bar?

  I am trying to set up a layout as such in an iPad application. It will have three major views, which make up the whole screen. The views will be stacked one on top of the other, each taking up the full width. I have one major nib file which accounts for the entire screen space. In that nib file, I am instantiating the three view controllers with outlets. Then I have this code: - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; [self.view addSubview:controllerOne.view]; [self.view addSubview:controllerTwo.view]; [self.view addSubview:controllerThree.view]; } This adds the views on top of one another and 20 pixels lower. However, after rotating to landscape and back they are right under the status bar. Do you know what would be causing this?

  I type echo $PATH on the command line and get /opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/Users/andrew/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/mysql/bin:/usr/local/pear/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin:/opt/local/bin:/usr/local/git/bin I'm wondering where this is getting set since my .bash_login file is empty. I'm particularly concerned that, after installing MacPorts, it installed a bunch of junk in /opt. I don't think that directory even exists in a normal Mac OS X install.   I'm looking for a way to track myself and receive quality data upon which I can write future scripts/programs. For example, I use Google Reader a lot. I'd like to track the hrefs that garner my clicks. Further, I'd like to drop all of the words of each href into a database where they can be stacked in a hierarchical manner. At the end of the week I want to know that "Ubuntu" garnered 448 clicks and "Cheetos" garnered 2. :) That's just one example... I'd like this tracking and data-collecting to extend beyond my browser. • How can I make monodevelop render text in KDE?

  Monodevelop from git in KDE 4.10.2 does not render text in code edit tabs I tried with xfce and text is rendered ok there. I tried disabling composition with alt shift f12 and restarting x server but it was no better. I also tried disabling font softening in monodevelop options and disabling plugins. I also tried temporarily deleting my KDE profile. This is dual screen setup on Nvidia with nouveau. OS is slackware64-current.

I am trying to design it so that if you want to work on something in the reference pane, you click a link and it swaps all the data between the two panes. • Is it important to reboot Linux after a kernel update?

  I have a few production Fedora and Debian webservers that host our sites as well as user shell accounts (used for git vcs work, some screen+irssi sessions, etc). Occasionally a new kernel update will come down the pipeline in yum/apt-get, and I was wondering if most of the fixes are severe enough to warrant a reboot, or if I can apply the fixes sans reboot. Our main development server currently has 213 days of uptime, and I wasn't sure if it was insecure to run such an older kernel.

  I'm searching for something like: tcpdump -p PID # But tcpdump does not know the PID or lsof -i --continuous # But lsof just runs and exits, no «live logging» to log which connections an application opens. In my case, I want to find out to which port git connects when committing. This happens in a fraction of a second, so I cannot use lsof. If there is a lot of traffic, filtering by PID or process name would be useful.
