  How do I execute a command before kickstart parses ks.cfg? My specific problem is that I want to install redhat into a tmpfs by telling kickstart: part / --fstype ext3 --size 1000 --maxsize 4000 --ondisk loop1 I've tried doing: %pre #!/bin/sh mkdir /tmp-root mount -t tmpfs tmpfs /tmp-root dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp-root/tmp-root.img bs=4096 count=1000000 losetup /dev/loop1 /tmp-root/tmp-root.img but that is not done early enough. Ugh! Update: I'm beginning to think it has nothing to do with being done early enough. I believe it has to do with anaconda and kudzu not thinking that a loopback device is a valid device. I'm not a python guy, so the idea of hacking up the kickstart code sucks! -Vinnie

  When running a command like the following: "RESTORE FILELISTONLY FROM DISK='\\\\server\\folder\\DummyDB.bak'" I'm getting this error: Backup destination "\\server" supports a FILESTREAM filegroup. This filegroup cannot be used as a backup destination. Rerun the BACKUP statement with a valid backup destination. RESTORE FILELIST is terminating abnormally. Unless someone comes up with a better idea, it seems that the drive from which restore is being attempted must not contain any database file contained in a filegroup. Is that the case? This feature is not currently installed. Would you like to install it now? If I click Yes, I get an error with the message The list of common English (U.K.) AutoCorrections is not available. Microsoft Office Outlook cannot install the necessary files due to Windows Installer error 1605. This action is only valid for products that are currently installed. Does anyone know what I can do to resolve this? A reinstall hasn't worked.

  Some time ago, RFC 6106 was created, which states how a router tells the clients about the DNS server to be used. It is a new standard, it has to be implemented, which needs time etc. I'm courious about the need for it: wouldn't have it been better to define a "globally valid" anycast address for DNS? Queries would be sent to this address and would be promoted along the default route until there is a host which claims to be responsible for it. In an enterprise network, that would be a central DNS server (or even more, on really big companies); in a SOHO network, it would either be the router or the DNS server of the ISP, in a root server hosting data center, it would be the DNS of the hoster, etc. What do I see wrong here? Do I have a wrong view of the anycast concept?

• Digest authentication not working: endless cycles of asking for user/pass

  I'm trying to setup my SVN repository for access remotely. In doing so I have some settings under Apache's dav_svn.conf file. When navigating to hostname/svn, or using Tortoise to do the same it prompts for the user name and password as expected. However, when entering the correct user name and pass that were set in the password file linked to under AuthUserFile it just asks for the credentials again. I think I'm probably missing something simple? The server is running Ubuntu Server 9.10. Accessing SVN remotely does currently work if the authentication lines of dav_svn.conf are commented out. • Has anyones successfully configured mutt for GMail on FreeBSD? If so, how?

  I've tried following the instructions here and here. Currently, I can read email from my GMail account, but not send—this is on a personal computer, so even if I configured Sendmail, I doubt any of the mail would survive the spam filter gauntlet. Both guides seem to require the --enable-smtp option for mutt, which I don't think is being exposed by ports. I've tried the mutt and mutt-devel ports and neither seem to give me that option. On a far less important note, I also haven't been able to change folders, e.g., I get told that Sent Mail is not a valid folder when I attempt to go into it. If you can troubleshoot this problem, it's pure gravy. I really only care about sending. Thanks, Hank

• off-the-shelf HDD in Dell Optiplex 755 - Invalid Replacement - Press F1 when rebooting

  Hi, I recently put an SSD into my work Optiplex 755. Since then, every time the system boots or reboots, I get prompted to hit F1 to continue with a message like HDD replacement is not valid. The system works just fine. What I am gathering from Dell's website is that I left the original drive internally as a data drive. And apparently the Optiplex does not support 2 drives in the configuration we purchased originally and complains. Any suggestions on how to get rid of this message? some suggested the MEBx or whatever from Intel and to turn it off, but I did not succeed earlier. It's not a big deal 80% of the time, but I regularly work from home and occasionally need to fire a reboot and well, you don't get the BIOS screen remotely :) Regards, Eric.

• Why does this package (ppa:ondrej/php5, it's PHP 5.5) break the apache2 installation?

  Problem Currently this package (ppa:ondrej/php5) is quite popular for installing the latest version of PHP 5.5. I've worked quite much with it, and everything ran smoothy, on several (dev) servers. But from today (?) this breaks the apache2 installation (it empties the /etc/apache2/sites-available/default file). This is reproduceable. Way to reproduce (on naked Ubuntu 64 12.04 LTS) // basic installs sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install apache2 sudo apt-get install php5 Apache is fine, nano /etc/apache2/sites-available/default has valid content now // getting PHP 5.5.x sudo apt-get install python-software-properties (for add-apt-repository) sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ondrej/php5 sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install php5 // php -v shows successful install of PHP 5.5.x now Apache is broken, nano /etc/apache2/sites-available/default is empty now Question Why does this happen ? According to https://launchpad.net/~ondrej/+archive/php5 there were no changes in the last few days.

But I'm unable to change the server's configuration (like loglevel) stored in cn=config because I don't seem to have a valid user/password for the backend?   I'm trying to use the RBC9 SpaceNavigator TEST x64 build drivers for my SpaceNavigator 3d joystick so that it can work as a normal joystick in games like Quake. Unfortunately, I get the error "This version of windows requires all drivers to have a valid digital signature" and in the "Device status" in device manager, I get "Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)". Is there a way to work around this issue?

• rhel/centos vs. ubuntu (possibly other debian-based systems) linux in handling duplicate ips in the same subnet

  This has bothered me for quite a while but I never found out why or how to change the behavior. ip duplicates could be caused by typos or dhcp errors etc., but they do occur from time to time. in rpm-based systems such as centos, the old server with the duplicate ip wins, and the new server will get an error in bringing up the nic (ip address already used). this is somewhat harmless because we can just fix the system that is coming up. ubuntu only the other hand happily grabs the used ip for itself and leave the old server/device without a valid ip. this is the more dangerous behavior because it causes outages. what i want is to change the ubuntu behavior to that of the centos/rhel so would appreciate any help.

  I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 (network upgrade using the update manager, from 9.04 which had different graphics related problems) and when I try to boot into it all I get a small Ubuntu logo, flickering text and then the tty1 command line with a logon prompt. startx gives following error: Fatal server error: no screens found I traced down a tutorial that said I needed the latest graphics drivers (Gigabyte ATI Radeon 4650 HD installed with 9.10 catalyst drivers) so I did using the 'sh' command and a USB stick (I have a working Windows partition) and it installed fine but did not fix the problem. Edit: Thanks to UK and Arjan van Bentem below I was able to understand the full error message of start x: Parse error on lone 2 of /etc/X11/xorg.conf 'nameserver' is not a valid keyword in this section Fatal server error: no screens found This has nothing to do with a graphical error (sorry if I misled anyone) but the xorg.conf file has 3 lines in it and lines 2-3 have an entry 'nameserver'. Using the nano command I commented out (using a # before the entries) the nameservers and can now boot Ubuntu. Thanks to everyone for their help.

  I had an HFS+ formatted drive that was going bad and wouldn't mount at all on OSX. I created an image using ddrescue on linux, and was able to save most of it. I can mount the drive and see the data just fine in linux using this: mount -o loop -t hfsplus dd_image /Volumes/mountpoint This doesn't work on my OSX system since hfsplus isn't a valid filesystem type. If I try: mount -t hfs image mountpoint It complains that it needs a block device. What's the fix here?

• Automatically keeping two excel data tables in-sync (w/out VBA)

  I'm putting together a workbook for tracking a stock portfolio. The primary sheet contains a table with the list of the transactions. From this I would like to create an overview table on another sheet with only one row per unique stock symbol that includes things like cost basis, returns, etc. The problem is that nothing I've tried updates the overview table correctly when rows are added to the transaction table. The closest I've got is something like the following: http://www.get-digital-help.com/2009/04/14/create-a-unique-alphabetically-sorted-list-extracted-from-a-column/ However, this requires applying that formula to every cell in the primary column of the overview sheet. And even then the range of the table isn't extended down to include new rows as they become valid. Essentially I'm looking for a way that auto-adds rows to a table and copies the formula based on a different table changing without using VBA. I (naively) modified the config like this: http://pastie.org/1426047 (added lines 90-98) but this is not a valid Apache config.   I've got a Tomcat 6.0.35 service with a SOAP based webapp protected by Digest Authentication. We are seeing issues with various users getting repeated 401 responses since we upgraded to 6.0.35. Additionally we are getting the following entries in Catalina log: WARNING: A valid entry has been removed from client nonce cache to make room for new entries. A replay attack is now possible. To prevent the possibility of replay attacks, reduce nonceValidity or increase cnonceCacheSize. Further warnings of this type will be suppressed for 5 minutes. Any idea what is going on?
