  • algorithm for Virtual Machine(VM) Consolidation in Cloud

    PROBLEM: We have N physical machines(PMs) each with ram Ri, cpu Ci and a set of currently scheduled VMs each with ram requirement ri and ci respectively Moving(Migrating) any VM from one PM to other has a cost associated which depends on its ram ri. A PM with no VMs is shut down to save power. Our target is to minimize the weighted sum of (N,migration cost) by migrating some VMs i.e. minimize the number of working PMs as well as not to degrade the service level due to excessive migrations. My Approach: Brute Force approach is choosing the minimum loaded PM and try to fit its VMs to other PMs by First Fit Decreasing algorithm or we can select the victim PMs and target PMs based on their loading level and shut down victims if possible by moving their VMs to targets. I tried this Greedy approach on the Data of Baadal(IIT-D cloud) but It isn't giving promising results. I have also tried to study the Ant colony optimization for dynamic VM consolidating but was unable to understand very much.   • How to change physical path of virtual directory in IIS7

    When you have multiple websites and each of them maps the same physical path as virtual directory, how to quickly change the physical path of that virtual directory for all websites? Note: I don't want to do use IIS Manager. I tried changing the path (find and replace) in %SYSTEM%\system32\inetsrv\config\applicationHost.config, then restarted IIS, but the change hasn't taken effect. What am I missing?

  • Password protect an alias virtual directory

    I have a main domain being hosted through CPanel. I also have a sub-domain that I would like to appear as a path under the main domain instead of as a sub-domain. So I have: http://example.com/ pointing to the main hosted file. http://example.com/mydir pointing to the subdomain files. This is achieved by a httpd.conf include from the main domain section to set an alias: alias /mydir /path/to/subdomain/files/ Now, that works fine so far. The problem is that if a .htaccess file under /path/to/the/subdomain/files/ contains an error, the alias is completely skipped, and /mydir goes instead to the main host files. That is kind of surprising to me - I would expect an error to return an error instead. Now the killer: if I try to password protect /path/to/subdomain/files/, then trying to access http://example.com/mydir will again attempt to deliver from under the main hosted files and not from /path/to/subdomain/files/ I am not seeing any errors reported on the .htaccess file in the apache error log, so I am assuming the .htaccess is valid: AuthUserFile /path/to/valid/readable/.htpasswd AuthName "Secure Access" AuthType Basic Require valid-user This kind of behaviour does not seem right to me. Is there something obvious that could be causing it? Or is this just the way it works? Perhaps using an alias is the wrong way to go?

    I am having Ubuntu 10.04 running on VirtualBox. Guest additions are installed successfully. But Guest additions do not provide the OpenGL library. To run open GL demo what needs to be installed. Some google links suggest Mesa utils. By my understanding is Mesa utils do not use vbox drivers to achieve hardware acceleration. Ubuntu 10.04 is running on VirtualBox and not on bare metal. The host comprise of Zx400 CPU with nvidia graphics driver. But this is not relevant since I would be using the vbox drivers provided by guest additions on VirtualBox. In this scenario how do I get OpenGL libraries on Ubuntu?. (Specially I am looking for solution other than Mesa, since mesa has support only for VMware and not for VirtualBox) How to get Opengl libraries which use vbox drivers for 3D hardware accleration??   • Windows 7 & Virtual PC and Internet (gateway) problems on host PC

    I upgraded to Windows 7 on a PC that is a few years old. The CPU was one revision away from having Hyper-V on it. So, I had to install Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 (v6.0.156.0) to run full XP instances instead of the seamless XP virtualization that is advertised so much. That's fine though; the 'older' version is useful since I use it to run different versions of the whole XP/IE stack for testing. (I'm a web developer.) ...And for the one 16-bit application we still use at the office for scheduling. * sigh * The virtual instances work fine, including networking. My issue is that after a reboot or coming out of sleep mode, my host Windows 7 won't connect to the Internet. It will connect to the local network fine. If I disable the "Virtual Machine Network Services" item (I'll call "VMNS" from here on) in the LAN Connection properties box, it starts working. But than the Virtual PC instances lose their network connectivity. If I re-enable VMNS again in the same instance, everything works (Internet on host and in the virtualized instances). But after the next reboot/sleep cycle this starts over. The route table gave me a clue though. When doing a cycle w/ VMNS enabled: IPv4 Route Table =========================================================================== Active Routes: Network Destination Netmask Gateway Interface Metric 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 On-link 10.0.3.51 20 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.0.10.10 10.0.3.51 276 ... After VMNS is disabled, the first route goes away. I assume that is for VMNS to intercept virtualized instance's network connections and forward them correctly? Just a guess though. More info: I checked my Firewall settings and Services (because I'm sort of a control nazi and turn off a lot) but couldn't find anything that made sense and if turned on changed anything. So it might be something there I'm missing, but I don't know what. My current hacked solution: So, I figured I'd mess with the routes myself to see if that helped, it did. If I run a route delete 0.0.0.0 on the universal (0.0.0.0) gateway routes, and add back in just the 2nd line with route add 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 10.0.10.10--the one that points to my actual gateway (10.0.10.10)--then I don't have to mess with the disable/enable cycle of VMNS, and everything works. Running those two commands is faster then bringing up connection options and disabling and re-enabling VMNS, but I still don't want to have use that hack script every boot either. (Oh, and I also tried messing with hard-coding TCP/IP settings in my network adapter, including setting high metrics, etc., but that didn't help either.) Any suggestions on the right way to fix this?

In short: I have 2 physical machines - first(Windows Server 2007, Apache 2.2) on the second machine esxi installed to host virtual machines . I have been converted my physical machine(1) on esxi(2) and in the next step I would like to deploy a load balancer between the physical and virtual machine. Would be this workaround appropriate? If yes what are the steps to follow?

    We're running IIS 6 on a WinServer2k3 box and we're having some trouble with the following problem: E-mails were sent out to users asking them to go to the following URL: alias.contoso.com/directory2/view.aspx?queryparam1=no&queryparam2=blue However, the URLS are actually supposed to be: server.contoso.com/directory2/view.aspx?queryparam1=no&queryparam2=blue It's too late to recall all of the e-mails, and we'd like to redirect traffic to make this as seamless as possible for our users. The real problem here is that the server (server.contoso.com) is hosting the alias (alias.contoso.com) as a redirect thusly, and the existing redirect we need to keep functional: Default Web Site (server.contoso.com) --Directory1 --Directory2 --Directory3 Redirection to Directory3 (alias.contoso.com) --Essentially alias.contoso.com will take the user to server.contoso.com/Directory3 Is there any way to host a separate redirect inside of the existing redirect? We need to keep alias.contoso.com taking the user to server.contoso.com/Directory3 but also make alias.contoso.com/directory2/view.aspx?queryparam1=no&queryparam2=blue point to server.contoso.com/directory2/view.aspx?queryparam1=no&queryparam2=blue Any tips? Is this even possible?

  • How can I toggle Full Screen mode in Remote Desktop without a Break key?

    My small laptop has a small keyboard, which lacks a Pause/Break key. Ctrl-Alt-Break toggles Full Screen mode in Windows Remote Desktop. Without a Break key, how can I enter Full Screen mode? I know I can exit fullscreen mode with the mouse. Maximizing the window doesn't help. This matters more on small laptops because the screens are small (so you need all the real estate you can get) and because the keyboard lacks dedicated PgUp/PgDn and other dedicated keys (so I can't easily use the RDP alternatives like Alt-PgUp).

  • Why does Windows Explorer highlight only second entry?

    Why does Windows Explorer highlight the second but never the first entry if I use the keyboard for navigation? Example: let's look at a folder that contains the following entries a1 a2 a3 b1 b2 If I hit 'a' on the keyboard, the explorer highlights entry 'a2' instead of 'a1'. It works fine for 'b' with 'b1' (because it's not the first entry). Similarly, if I open a folder and use the arrow-down key to navigate then the first entry is skipped again. Why?! It's probable that I'm too stupid for this but this "feature" really annoys me!

I tried it with the rewrite rules, but I can't get it working, because I don't know how to get the part xxx from the SERVER_NAME into my RewriteRule.     I have a .vmdk (VMWare hard disk) file that I cannot use as the lone disk in a new virtual machine. If I attach it to an existing virtual machine then it works fine. It has Windows Server 2003 on it. When I attempt to boot the new VM it attempts a network boot. EDIT: VMWare Workstation 6.5 I could not find a PXE option in the settings, and I did look in the VM config file for "PXE" but did not find one.

  • Trying to setup virtual hosts on unix PHP on nginx

    I have tried to install php5-fpm and Nginx on Ubuntu machine, but I got a problem. When I have only one virtual host on a unix port it is all fine but when I try to add another virtual host Nginx goes to default web page "Welcome to Nginx!" but when I run it on a tcp port example port 9000 it work fine with multisites. It is a fresh install of ubuntu 11.10, Nginx 1.2.3 with php5-fpm installed. It also has extra php installs such as php-apc. I can only give the links to the virtual hosts because I am doing it from a mobile phone.   • Two keyboards - one qwerty one dvorak. Can windows use both simultaneously?

    Similar to this question: Is it possible to use multi keyboards with multi keyboard layouts simultaneously? - I have two keyboards plugged in simultaneously. Both are querty keyboards, but I've rearranged the keys on one to be a dvorak layout. I'd like to find some way to configure windows (XP) such that while both keyboards are plugged in, typing on each results in it's respective layout. I'd prefer if there was someway to have the system automatically use the desired layout based on which USB keyboard it is receiving input from. If no such solution is possible, I would settle for a fast way of switching between US English and US English Dvorak languages so that in a pinch I can easily go from one to the other. Thanks.

  • Binding keys from specific device in X.org

    I have a remote control for presentations, which generates Next/Prior key events in X.org (Page up/down). I'd like to use these for navigating in playlist (using MPD, but it probably does not matter). The problem is that I want to make this control work all the time (without application having focus) and I don't want to lose Page up/down functionality from normal keyboard. Is there some application which would allow me to bind actions to events from specific keyboard? Or is there simple way to implement such thing on my own?
