• Looking for definitive answer to accessing a network drive/NAS/SMB drive via Windows 7 HOME and Windows 7 Professional. Is it possible and how?

  I want to be able to access my Lacie 2Big network drive in Windows 7 Explorer. I have a machine with Windows 7 Home and one with Windows 7 Professional. Neither Windows 7, home or pro, can access the drive. The Windows 7 Home machine displays the drive in its Explorer, with the capacity, but on clicking the icon, I get another window, blank with the busy pointer which does not eventually stop. The drive is working perfectly. How do I know this? Because I can access it with no problems on my Apple Mac, Windows XP home and Ubuntu machines on the same network as the Windows 7 machines. Except for the Windows XP home machine that required Lacie ethernet agent program, the Mac and the Ubuntu machines needed no setup, the drive appeared like any other drive. So my 2 questions: Is it possible to access a network share drive, e.g. a NAS like Lacie 2big in Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional. If so how? I read on Microsoft's own forums and elsewhere that network sharing drives, e.g. via SambaSMB is NOT possible on Windows 7 Home. • Windows 2000 uninstall on a dual-boot 2000/XP system

  While several questions have already been answered about removing an OS from a dual-booting machine, most refer to Windows 7 vs. Linux/Vista/XP. I have W2K installed on my older HDD (Drive C). Later on I bought a new HDD and installed XP's under W2K environment. Each time I turned my PC on, I had the choice of W2K or XP OS, which I still have. I eventually stopped using the w2k OS and as the older HDD where this OS is installed is getting old, I plan to remove it completely. The problem is that the active master boot record is on this very HDD. So when I remove the HDD, I get no OS loader, no matter what boot drive I choose in BIOS. Apparently I have to set the boot record on the newer HDD with XP's. Some advise to use the bootable XP CD and try to set the active MBR from there.. I don't have the CD anymore. Regardless, I suspect there is much less to solving this problem than running the recovery console, like a simple boot.ini file edit. But I might be wrong.

• Does Windows 8 RTM Support VB6 (SP6) Runtime files? If so, which ones?

  Basically, I'm trying to find out which of the following files come packaged with the Windows 8 RTM (that is, the final version). Just to be clear, we're not wanting to know if any of the runtime files (listed below) are or were included with any of the previous versions (Beta, CTP, RS etc) or releases of Windows 8 - we are just interested in this compatibility question as far as Windows 8 RTM (Final Version) is concerned. In addition, if possible, we would also like to know which of the below files (if any) come shipped and registered with the Windows 8 RT (on ARM) version. As far as the ARM version is concerned, you're welcome to base your answer on the latest version of Windows 8 RT (on ARM) that is available at the date and time your answer is posted. (This will also serve to future-proof this question as additional releases or versions of Windows 8 and Windows 8 RT on ARM come out).   I need a help on getting Special folder in windows service program. I used this code in my Windows Form application: Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.ApplicationData); and got the path, ""C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming"* But if I run the same code in my Winows Service project I got the path: "C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\" But I need the earlier path (got in Windows Form). How do I get the same path in Service projet also. I have user setting file, log, config file in the "C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming" folder. So I have to refer the same path both in my Windows Form application and Windows Service project. Can somebody tell me, what is the difference here and how do i get the same path in both type of project? Thanks, sharath

• Change Windows 7 Explorer's Details Pane limits

  For some reason, MS decided to completely kill the status bar's functionality in Win7 (and maybe Vista, but I don't know for sure). I have tried all possible options such as Classic Shell and so on. Basically, the one thing I miss most is seeing at a glance the total size of my selected files. I know I can press Alt+Enter or whatever, but that's not the point. The point is that the so-called 'details' pane stops providing details if more than 15 files are selected! WTH? Cannot understand the reason behind such a stupid arbitrary limit, that doesn't seem to be user-configurable at all. Anyway, what I'm looking for is a way to change that limit, either via the registry or otherwise. If changing the limit isn't possible, would it be possible for some programming genius to create a very small optimized light-weight non resource-hungry (you get the idea!) program whose sole purpose will be to automatically click the "Show more details..." link in the details pane after every file selection? For bonus points, the program should wait for a second or two after file selection is complete to do this, so that selecting multiple files in quick succession doesn't hit the HDD repeatedly. Any takers for the challenge? :)

• Windows 7 XP mode missing driver virtual pc integration device

  I have XP Mode installed fine, but the shipped Windows XP installation is too heavy. I tried to install a light XP using my ASUS Eee PC. After installation, I have to install a few missing drivers and everything worked OK except I can't copy and paste between host and guest operating system. I checked Device Manager and found the Virtual PC Integration Device is not installed correctly. I can't find any driver for that. How can I fix this problem?

The trigger works perfectly, and sends emails whenever we need them to. HOWEVER, we cannot find a way to get the email to contain information about the error, particularly the error message. Is there any way to have the message change based on the contents of the event-log error?

  Hi my problem is this: I have a 3 pc (192.168.1.2,..3,..4) and a windows 2008 server (192.168.1.100) router is 192.168.1.1. I just want that the 3 pc set like gateway 192.168.1.100, are filter by squid proxy loaded in win2008 so in win2008 I 've set in control panel the proxy 192.168.1.100:3128 and in win2008 browser work, the connection is filtered by proxy, but in 3 pc not works, so maybe I should route all incoming request into squid, but I dunno how ... thanks

I've also tried to download the updates and open with the Windows Update Standalone Installer but it comes up with a message which states "The update is not applicable to your computer".

  In Windows 2003 I was able to change the registry key as follows to display the actualy computer name on the desktop using the Computer Desktop Icon. System Key: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}] Change "LocalizedString" value to %COMPUTERNAME% I'm getting access denied messages using regedit for this key and I'm unable to give full rights to this specific key as well as administrator. Does anyone have a better solution for displaying the computer name on the desktop? Thanks.

• Windows Question: RunOnce/Second Boot Issues

  I am attempting to create a Windows XP SP3 image that will run my application on Second Boot. Here is the intended workflow. 1) Run Image Prep Utility (I wrote) on windows to add my runonce entries and clean a few things up. 2) Reboot to ghost, make image file. 3) Package into my ISO and distribute. 4) System will be imaged by user. 5) On first boot, I have about 5 things that run, one of which includes a driver updater (I wrote) for my own specific devices. 6) One of the entries inside of HKCU/../runonce is a reg file, which adds another key to HKLM/../runonce. This is how second boot is acquired. 7) As a result of the driver updater, user is prompted to reboot. 8) My application is then launched from HKLM/../runonce on second boot. This workflow works perfectly, except for a select few legacy systems that contain devices that cause the add hardware wizard to pop up. When the add hardware wizard pops up is when I begin to see problems. It's important to note, that if I manually inspect the registry after the add hardware wizard pops up, it appears as I would expect, with all the first boot scripts having run, and it's sitting in a state I would correctly expect it to be in for a second boot scenario. The problem comes when I click next on the add hardware wizard, it seems to re-run the single entry I've added, and re-executes the runonce scripts. (only one script now as it's already executed and cleared out the initial entries). This causes my application to open as if it were a second boot, only when next is clicked on the add hardware wizard. If I click cancel, and reboot, then it also works as expected. I don't care as much about other solutions, because I could design a system that doesn't fully rely on Microsoft's registry. I simply can't find any information as to WHY this is happening. I believe this is some type of Microsoft issue that's presenting itself as a result of an overstretched image that's expected to support too many legacy platforms, but any help that can be provided would be appreciated.   So I got an airpoort extreme, and everything works beautifully on the mac, but my windows 7 PC which is connected via a regular ethernet cable can't see any network. I have the SATA set to IDE. When it restarts after the installation to complete the installation, it goes to a black screen and stops moving. It's been 10 minutes now.

  Hi, when I'm logged in as a user that is not member of the administrator group the entry to create a new textfile is missing from the right click "New" menu. If I give the user admin rights or start the explorer with admin rights the "New - text document" menu entry magically appears. As far as I can see the registry entries are correct. Anybody got a solution for that side effect of beeing a normal user in windows?? Regards
