• Should the number of developers be considered when estimating a task?

  I am pretty inexperienced with working in agile projects but I have tried it a few times and I always run into this problem when estimating a task. Do we bring into the estimate the number of developers that will work on the task? Let me explain: Task A is estimated to one time unit and developer 1 will work on it. Task B is also estimated to one time unit and developer 2 and 3 will work on it together. I.e. if developer 1 begins to work on task A at the same time developer 2 and 3 begins to work on task B they will all finish at the same time according to the estimate. Should the estimate for task B be twice of that for task A or the same? The problem as I see it is that when a task is received and estimated, it is not always possible to know how many people will work on it. And if you assumed that two developers would work on the task for one time unit but it turns out that only one developer will actually do it, this will not automatically mean that that developer will work on it for two time units. Is there any standard practice for this?

• How should I fix problems with file permissions while restoring from Time Machine?

  While restoring files from a Time Machine backup, I got the error message "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items." because of problems with files in one folder. What's the safest way to deal with this? • Unable to boot with Windows 2008 DVD / USB Key

  Hi everyone, I am trying to install Windows 2008 server on a HP Proliant DL180 G5. There is no built-in DVD reader so I need to use my LaCie USB one. When I put the CD in and boot from the USB DVD on the server, I get the error message: Boot Failed! Please insert boot media in selected boot device. So I tried with another Windows bootable CD and still no luck. What I've done then, I copied the installation DVD on my 16go USB key. Again, impossible to boot from the USB Key. I have 2 147go SAS 15k HDD on my server. They are not showing in the Bios. I was wondering if this is a reason why nothing will boot on it. I am trying to find a way to deploy Windows 2008 server on my HP server as soon as possible. If you guys have ideas, feel free to let me know :) Best regards, David.   I have a time_select in which I am trying to set a time value as follows; <%= f.time_select :start_time, :value => (@invoice.start_time ? @invoice.start_time : Time.now) %> This always produces a time selector with the current time rather than the value for @invoice.start_time. @invoice.start_time is in fact a datetime object but this is passed to the time selector just fine if I use <%= f.time_select :start_time %> I guess what I'm really asking is how to use the :value option with the time_select helper. Attempts like the following don't seem to produce the desired result; <%= f.time_select :start_time, :value => (Time.now + 2.hours) %> <%= f.time_select :start_time, :value => "14:30" %>

• Write Fedora.iso to USB and boot it from a Macbook

  I have an .iso image of the full Fedora 16 install (Downloaded from http://fedoraproject.org/en/get-fedora-options#formats as "Fedora 16 DVD") and the question now is: How do I write it on a USB stick, so I can install it on my Mac book? I tried using DD as the install guide said, and that gave me a USB stick which can boot from my PC. But it can't boot from the Mac (The Mac start menu don't show it as a boot option). Edit: I downloaded a live install image, and did this (SSD is my USB 4GB thing) /sbin/mkdosfs -F 32 -n usbdisk /dev/dev/sdd1 sudo livecd-iso-to-disk --format --reset-mbr --efi /tmp/download/Fedora-16-i686-Live-KDE.iso /dev/sdd1 And this produced an image which can boot on my pc but not on my mac. This seems to indicate that the --efi is not working, because if it really was EFI it would not boot on a normal pc, would it? I then tried this: (Difference being that I write the image directory to /dev/sdd instead of /dev/sdd1) but this still will not boot on the Mac (it newer shows up at the startup screen on the Mac). sudo livecd-iso-to-disk --format --reset-mbr --efi /tmp/download/Fedora- PS: My host Linux is Fedora 13.

• Dell PowerEdge 860 won't boot but gets power

  I have a Dell PowerEdge 860. Got an 2008 R2 running on it. Here is the scenario I'm currently in: I can boot it up and work as usuall. But when I restart it, it just shuts down, doesn't reboot, and it won't boot up again. Then it stays in this "mode", On/off button blinking green(standby mode?) and System Indicator LED blinking amber. If I try to press the On/Off button on the frontpanel it won't boot. It's like you can hear the fan from the PSU running but nothing else is trying to boot. If I unplug the powercable and then put it back in again it's the same, the extremley noisy fans won't start and it's just sitting there. If I let it "rest" for like 1 to 24 hours while the powercable is unplugged and I plug it in again, it boots directly, without me having to push the On/Off button. What I have tried: Run diagnostics(not the one in POST phase) and everything is fine Booting without any cables except the powercable Boot without memory installed Boot without the raidcable plugged in Cleared NVRAM Reseated all the components and cables Googling like a freak for any possible solution Tried Dell Support but I don't have any warranty left so they can't help me unless i pay some ridiculous amount of money I suppos Do anyone have some experience with the same issue? Do I need to replace something or is there any other way to determine the problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

• Is typeid of type name always evaluated at compile time in c++ ?

  I wanted to check that typeid is evaluated at compile time when used with a type name (ie typeid(int), typeid(std::string)...). To do so, I repeated in a loop the comparison of two typeid calls, and compiled it with optimizations enabled, in order to see if the compiler simplified the loop (by looking at the execution time which is 1us when it simplifies instead of 160ms when it does not). And I get strange results, because sometimes the compiler simplifies the code, and sometimes it does not. About the context, I tracked down the problem to this very simplified example, but my goal is to use typeid with template types (as partial function template specialization is not possible). SVT131A11L is the hardware configuration code and the model number of the computer is one among the SVT1311 series. I contacted Sony customer service but their answer was to contact a Linux representative. The bugging error with Vaio devices is they are build to run windows and it doesnt come configured with a dual boot option, I am wondering if I could get any assistance of how to solve it, or where I could get related information.

  Today, i installed ubuntu along with my preinstalled windows8 on Lenovo Y580. At the end of installation this messasge popped up saying that Grub installation failed. After this i installed Easy BCD ( http://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/ i use this also on my PC where i use win7 with Ubuntu). The problem i got is - because of choosing installation along with win8 i dont know where ubuntu is installed so i cant boot it even when using Easy BCD. What should i do now? Lucia

  I have just downloaded Ubuntu and burned an installation DVD. I used it to install Ubuntu on a PC running Windows XP choosing the option to run Ubuntu alongside Windows. I chose to install the additional updates after initial installation. When I choose Ubuntu from the menu displayed on boot-up I get a purple and yellow screen which is completely blank except for the functioning mouse pointer.   I did search the forums for quite some time, yet did not find any answer to my problem... I have an Acer Aspire One D270 with Windows 7 Starter and I've installed Ubuntu using the Wubi installer. When I boot to Windows 7, everything works fine, however, when I try to run Ubuntu, it gets stuck on a black screen at stopping kernel messages (or other lines), followed by some lines with [ 20.....] and won't continue...   I have recently reinstalled w7 and had ubuntu 12.04 lts installed on it,w7 installation deleted the grub2 loader,after that i found solution to use boot-repair from live-cd session, BUT......now i have 2 windows 7(loader)in grub loader,and only 1 windows 7 installation,how can i remove it?One is on on /dev/sda1(which should be w7 sistem reserved partition) and second is on on /dev/sda2(which is w7 installment partition) it says and both log on same w7.All i need is to remove it without brake the grub2 again and if someone is willing to guide me to add windows on primary selection, cause my girlfriends doesnt get along with linux :D.

  When I start Ubuntu from the grub, I get a strange message, and a medieval prompt as: No init found Busybox v1.15.3(ubuntu 1.1.15 3-ubuntu5) built in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of commands (initramfs)_ I use a dualboot system, with Ubuntu Meerkat, and Windows 7. Previously I was using tftp-hpa with a custom rule that replaces filenames with capitals into non-capital filenames and replaces the backslashes into forward slashes so that WinPE will boot fine. But in atftp I can't find rules or replacements like that. I'm searching for long, but cannot find or write the right pcre-pattern. Could you help me with this?

• Ubuntu is booting on acer e1-510 laptop, but screen displays nothing

  Tried loading ubuntu 12.04 (32-bit as well 64 bit) through bootable usb , on a brand new 64-bit acer E1-510 laptop. It shows the 'Try ubuntu without installing screen' and I selected that option. But instead of showing ubuntu's logo(which implies it is loading). I get a blank screen. The screen is on, but it shows nothing. I tried the same on an old model laptop acer aspire 5738 and it worked like a charm. However, I realized that Ubuntu is actually booting on E1-510 and only the display is not working. How did I arrive at this conclusion? When I select on 'Try ubuntu without installing screen', after about 8-10 seconds I see that the WiFi indicator light on the laptop panel switches on(just like when we boot up a Windows OS or even Ubuntu ). I got an idea that the system booted Ubuntu. To confirm this, I tried to adjust volume using keyboard shortcuts. Voila, I can hear the sound of adjusting volume! That means it has already booted Ubuntu. I confirmed this with another step. I pressed the power button once and after two seconds I pressed ENTER. It began the process of switching off and within 5 seconds the laptop was powered off. You may ask, Why is this a confirmation that Ubuntu has booted? This is because in Ubuntu when you press on power button, a dialog box opens with shut down, restart, suspend option- and the shut down option is already selected by default; so all I have to do is press ENTER to shut down. This again proved that Ubuntu was indeed up and running. Unlike previous 'AskUbunutu' posts about Acer e1-510, I must mention that my laptop came WITH the Legacy BIOS mode, so its not really a problem to boot ubuntu from a bootable pendrive. Only the screen is not working. In case you need to know, I am running Windows 7-Ultimate 64 bit on acer e1-510.
