  • Dealing with Fanboys

    We've all probably met someone like this, that developer who just knows that his language is the one true language and won't shut up about it. How do you deal like someone like this? I don't want to offend anyone (especially since the fanboy in my workplace is the senior developer). But I want to be able to use my own choice of scripting language when I have to write a throwaway script that never makes it to the repository and no one else need know existed. Thoughts that I had to dealing with this: Laugh it off - "Haha yeah maybe language X is a bit easier, I guess I'm a masochist!" Go with it - I'd really prefer to avoid this as I can't afford the drop in productivity associated with picking up a new language. Hide my language - Become a closet programmer and hide my monitor whenever I'm scripting or automating something. What would you suggest for this situation?

  • Gnome 3.10 doesn't show login, Ubuntu 13.10

    I use gnome as default desktop. And I recently upgrade Ubuntu to 13.10 then upgraded gnome to 3.10. Upon restarting, it brings me to the gnome log in screen (GDM) and all I see is the top banner part so like your date, music volume, option to restart, suspend or shutdown. Hitting control+alt+delete tells me gnome display manager will log out - it does but still nothing. I am on the log in screen, but there is no user to select, like there normally is or was. I can boot into safe mode and drop down to shell but I am not sure what commands I would enter to get the login screen back. I am using the gnome PPA's and the "unstable" PPA, so I expected issues, but not this - ideas?

  • Cannot see user desktop (Applications, Places, System...) when I log in

    I am very new to Ubuntu. I recently got a new laptop running Windows 7. I am using Virtual Box and just installed the Ubuntu 12.10 ISO as a new Virtual Machine within Virtual Box. Everything seemed to install just fine and I even added the Guest Additions under Devices. The problem is that I cannot see the menus and my login information. The virtual machine says it is running; however, I do not have the Applications, Places, System, etc. tray to select from. Is there something I am supposed to do after logging in to get this? I entered my password and everything seemed fine, I just don't have those drop-down menus available...

  • Need some help fixing fonts (11.04 Alpha 3)

    Hi I changed my Application Font and Window Font to something much better looking but it has a few problems. The font is Umpush Light. It's doing this in the software center: http://img851.imageshack.us/img851/8307/workspace1004.png If I increase the font size from 11 to 12, that problem goes away, but then everything is too large. When I increase it this also happens: http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/6231/workspace1006e.png It starts moving the text in the search box up, and the "All Applications" drop down gets messed up too. It seems like there is too much padding around the font or something. Anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this?

  • Systray not showing

    I have an application called foo that runs as root. The foo calls system function to execute the other application which show tray icon using Qt. The Systray Icon Example in Qt is working properly in user account but not in root. I run the following command to drop privileges: system(“exec su -l user -c ‘export DISPLAY=:0; /opt/systray &’”); However, the systray icon doesn’t appear in Ubuntu 13.10 & 14.04. Is there any way to display this systray in this case except for the solution that uses a PPA that comes with to re-enable the systray whitelist?

  • How to hide assets from user? ( e.g.: a png file )

    I think the title is quite self-explaining, still this is a big area I think, so let me drop a few words: I've got a simple experiment game project going, and I want to make sure, that the user isn't messing with the game assets like player skin etc. In my opinion the best way would be that on production I would merge all the assets into one file and the application would check the hash of that file, so it could detect the corrupted data. Is this an acceptable practice? There must be sum libraries / applications which are targeting this problem, could you guide me on this? Project details: unix/linux, c++, sdl

  • Cisco 891w multiple VLAN configuration

    I'm having trouble getting my guest network up. I have VLAN 1 that contains all our network resources (servers, desktops, printers, etc). I have the wireless configured to use VLAN1 but authenticate with wpa2 enterprise. The guest network I just wanted to be open or configured with a simple WPA2 personal password on it's own VLAN2. I've looked at tons of documentation and it should be working but I can't even authenticate on the guest network! I've posted this on cisco's support forum a week ago but no one has really responded. Mainly, how has the detail view section of the split view been given a drop shadow and rounded corners, and for lack of better phrasing, how has it been "separated" from the master view (the default split view template has the master and detail view joined together with nothing but a vertical line separating the two)?

  • Silverlight 4 WCF RIA Services and MVVM is not as simple

    [Disclaimer: I'm ASP.NET MVC Developer] Hi, I'm looking for some best practices with implementing MVVM pattern with WCF RIA in Silverlight 4. I'm not looking to use MEF of IoC for locating my ViewModels. What I would like to know is how to apply MVVM pattern with Silverlight 4 and WCF RIA. I don't want to use other stuff like Prism or MVVM Light toolkit. I found many examples on Internet showing how it is wonderful to drag and drop a datasource on the view and the job is done (it reminds me about my first VB6 developments). I tried to implement MVVM with WCF RIA and it's not strightforward at all. If I understand, the MVVM should contain all the logic in order to unit test it in isolation but when it comes to combine it with WCF RIA it's another story. I have the following questions. Can I use a generated metadata as model ? It would be easier to use it that if I write all from the scratch. As I saw the only way I could get data is through DomainContext or through direct binding in the view (local ressource). I don't want the direct binding in the view, not testable at all. On the other hand I can't use DomainContext, it doesn't expose any single entity !!! All I have is the EntitySet that I can bind to datagrid. How do I bind a single Entity to the DataForm from the ViewModel ? How do I udpate the model to the database ? How do I navigate from one Entity to a collection of it's itemps. For example if I have a Company Entity I would like to show a DataFrom to update a entite informations and a datagrid to show companies adresses. When saving a form would like to save information to Company and for example an information avout which adress was selected as active. Please help me understand how to do it well. Or maybe I should drop the WCF RIA and to do it with WCF from scratch ? What do you think ?

    I am facing a problem while working with a WPF ComboBox. My situation is that I have a ComboBox that is displaying some values. I am adding ContentControls to ComboBox' Items property. I have bound the Content of these ContentControl to some datasource so that I can change the Content dynamically. The problem is if the Content of item which is selected changes the item in ComboBox drop down updates but item in ComboBox SelectionChange remains same. Any suggestions please?

  • How to truncate milliseconds off of a .NET DateTime

    I'm trying to compare a time stamp from an incoming request to a database stored value. SQL Server of course keeps some precision of milliseconds on the time, and when read into a .NET DateTime, it includes those milliseconds. The incoming request to the system, however, does not offer that precision, so I need to simply drop the milliseconds. I feel like I'm missing something obvious, but I haven't found an elegant way to do it (C#).

  • How to open call out MKAnnotationView programmatically? (iPhone, MapKit)

    I want to open up the callout for an MKPinAnnotationView programmatically. Eg I drop 10 pins on the map, and want to open up the one closest to me. How would I go about doing this? Apple has specified the 'selected' parameter for MKAnnotationView's, but discourages setting it directly (this doesn't work, tried it). For the rest MKAnnotationView only has a setHighlighted (same story), and canShowCallout method.. Any hints if this is possible at all?

The "Autosize" property is set to "true", but it doesn't seem to be making any difference. I've been banging my head over this for a while. Is it even possible?

  • Why is IE8 rendering superfish menu wrong?

    I am useing the superfish jquery plugin If you view the superfish menu here: clicky the drop-downs show correctly (above the main content) in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, IE6, IE7 But for some reason they fall behind the main content in IE8. I already set the z-index for the superfish menu which IE7 wasnt working right until I did so, but it didn't fix IE8. Am I missing something?

When I drop the files into the App_Browsers folder I get the error The browser or gateway element with ID 'docomon505i' cannot be found. Are these files compatible with .NET4 or am I doing something wrong. The documentation is sparse.

  • Cascading dropdownlist jQuery does not retain value on post back.

    I have two html select server control on an add data form page. the user selects a value in the first html select server control and then values are populated into the second html select server control with jquery. The problem is when a a user clicks the save button and the page posts back, the values are no longer in the drop down list populated by jQuery. The drop downlist is a html server control, shouldn't it retain the values on post-back?   • Move SharePoint Designer workflow from one document library to another

    Hi, I built a sharepoint workflow for a "test" document library. I would now like to move this workflow to a "prod" document library. I copied the workflow in sharepoint designer from one document library to the next successfully. However when I bring up the wizard and try to change the document library the workflow was made for I am unable because the drop down box with this option is disabled. Does anyone know how I can accomplish this?

    Is there a quick and easy way to update my LINQ dbml files? Right now, if I update a Stored Procedure, I need to open the dbml designer file, delete the old SP, save, drag and drop the new SP, and save again. I haven't researched this a whole bunch, but I'm wondering if there's an easy way for Visual Studio to just go into the DB and update the dbml to the latest SP's by just clicking an update button or something along those lines.

  • click events issue in jquery.

    I don't know if the title explain this situation well. Below is a code i wrote to create div elements when the button is pressed. Then By clicking on any of the created divs, we can change the div background by choosing a color from the drop down box. However if i click on another div and tried to change the color by selecting another color from the drop down, the previously clicked divs also gets affected by the new color. Why is this happening. I only want the selected div to change color, without affecting the previously clicked divs. I read allot of threads on this site, some of which talks about unbinding clicks, but I'm unable to solve the problem.   • Nested Row problem

    Hi, I'm using the 1kb css grid framework for a site, and although nested rows are apparently supported by the framework, when I try to drop in a nested row it doesn't work! Sorry not to explain it better - the site's here, may be easier to just look at the source: http://2605.co.uk/saf/build/ the grid: /grid.css the stylesheet: /style.css I'm a graphic designer hacking his way through a site he shouldn't be having to build but there's no budget to speak of!
