  • Good free way to clone a hard drive or a partition and send the image over the network (through FTP, Windows file sharing, "anything")?

    - by Deleted
What I ideally would like is a free software solution which can: Boot from a CD/DVD/USB-stick and Clone a complete hard drive or a partition and Send the resulting image file over the network through Windows file sharing (SMB, I could use SAMBA on my server to receive the image) or through FTP or through SFTP or through SCP It should work with Linux and Windows file-systems (where specific file system support is necessary) Is there anything good out there like this? I know Wikipedia lists a lot of cloning software. But I'm looking for a personal recommendation which you have used yourself, as I find it more credible (I'll see from the upvotes if the answer is liked by a lot of visitors).

  • Ruby. Mongoid. Relations

    - by Scepion1d
I've encountered some problems with MongoID. I have three models: require 'mongoid' class Configuration include Mongoid::Document belongs_to :user field :links, :type => Array field :root, :type => String field :objects, :type => Array field :categories, :type => Array has_many :entries end class TimeDim include Mongoid::Document field :day, :type => Integer field :month, :type => Integer field :year, :type => Integer field :day_of_week, :type => Integer field :minute, :type => Integer field :hour, :type => Integer has_many :entries end class Entry include Mongoid::Document belongs_to :configuration belongs_to :time_dim field :category, :type => String # any other dynamic fields end Creating documents for Configurations and TimeDims is successful. But when i've trying to execute following code: params = Hash.new params[:configuration] = config # an instance of Configuration from DB entry.each do |key, value| params[key.to_sym] = value # String end unless Entry.exists?(conditions: params) params[:time_dim] = self.generate_time_dim # an instance of TimeDim from DB params[:category] = self.detect_category(descr) # String Entry.new(params).save end ... i saw following output: /home/scepion1d/Workspace/RubyMine/dana-x/.bundle/ruby/1.9.1/gems/bson-1.6.1/lib/bson/bson_c.rb:24:in `serialize': Cannot serialize an object of class Configuration into BSON. • Stream Music and Video Over the Internet with Windows Media Player 12

    - by DigitalGeekery
A new feature in Windows Media Player 12, which is included with Windows 7, is being able to stream media over the web to other Windows 7 computers.  Today we will take a look at how to set it up and what you need to begin. Note: You will need to perform this process on each computer that you want to use. What You’ll Need Two computers running Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate. The host, or home computer that you will be streaming the media from, cannot be on a public network or part of domain. Windows Live ID UPnP or Port Forwarding enabled on your home router Media files added to your Windows Media Player library Windows Live ID Sign up online for a Windows Live ID if you do not already have one. See the link below for a link to Windows Live.   Configuring the Windows 7 Computers Open Windows Media Player and go to the library section. Click on Stream and then “Allow Internet access to home media.”   The Internet Home Media Access pop up window will prompt you to link your Windows Live ID to a user account. Click “Link an online ID.” If you haven’t already installed the Windows Live ID Sign-In Assistant, you will be taken to Microsoft’s website and prompted to download it. Once you have completed the Windows Live download assistant install, you will see Windows Live ID online provider appear in the “Link Online IDs” window. Click on “Link Online ID.” Next, you’ll be prompted for a Windows Live ID and password. Enter your Windows Live ID and password and click “Sign In.” A pop up window will notify you that you have successfully allowed Internet access to home media. Now, you will have to repeat the exact same configuration on the 2nd Windows 7 computer. Once you have completed the same configuration on your 2nd computer, you might also need to configure your home router for port forwarding. If your router supports UPnP, you may not need to manually forward any ports on your router. So, this would be a good time to test your connection. Go to a nearby hotspot, or perhaps a neighbor’s house, and test to see if you can stream your media. If not, you’ll need to manually forward the ports. You can always choose to forward the ports anyway, just in case. Note: We tested on a Linksys WRT54GL router, which supports UPnP, and found we still needed to manually forward the ports. Finding the ports to forward on the router Open Windows Media Player and make sure you are in Library view. Click on “Stream” on the top menu, and select “Allow Internet access to home media.”   On the “Internet Home Media Access” window, click on “Diagnose connections.” The “Internet Streaming Diagnostic Tool” will pop up. Click on “Port forwarding information” near the bottom.   On the “Port Forwarding Information” window you will find both the Internal and External Port numbers you will need to forward on your router. The Internal port number should always be 10245. The external number will be different depending on your computer. Microsoft also recommends forwarding port 443. Configuring the Router Next, you’ll need to configure Port Forwarding on your home router. We will show you the steps for a Linksys WRT54GL router, however, the steps for port forwarding will vary from router to router. On the Linksys configuration page, click on the Administration Tab along the top, click the “Applications & Gaming Tab, and then the “Port Range Forward” tab below it. Under “Application,” type in a name. It can be any name you choose. In both the “Start” and “End” boxes, type the port number. Enter the IP address of your home computer in the IP address column. Click the check box under “Enable.” Do this for both the internal and external port numbers and port 443. When finished, click the “Save Settings” button. Note: It’s highly recommended that you configure your home computer with a static IP address When you’re ready to play your media over the Internet, open up Windows Media Player and look for your host computer and username listed under “Other Libraries.” Click on it expand the list to see your media libraries. Choose a library and a file to play. Now you can enjoy your streaming media over the Internet. Conclusion We found media streaming over the Internet to work fairly well. However, we did see a loss of quality with streaming video. Also, Recorded TV .wtv and dvr-ms files did not play at all. • NUMA-aware placement of communication variables

    - by Dave
For classic NUMA-aware programming I'm typically most concerned about simple cold, capacity and compulsory misses and whether we can satisfy the miss by locally connected memory or whether we have to pull the line from its home node over the coherent interconnect -- we'd like to minimize channel contention and conserve interconnect bandwidth. That is, for this style of programming we're quite aware of where memory is homed relative to the threads that will be accessing it. Ideally, a page is collocated on the node with the thread that's expected to most frequently access the page, as simple misses on the page can be satisfied without resorting to transferring the line over the interconnect. The default "first touch" NUMA page placement policy tends to work reasonable well in this regard. When a virtual page is first accessed, the operating system will attempt to provision and map that virtual page to a physical page allocated from the node where the accessing thread is running. It's worth noting that the node-level memory interleaving granularity is usually a multiple of the page size, so we can say that a given page P resides on some node N. That is, the memory underlying a page resides on just one node. But when thinking about accesses to heavily-written communication variables we normally consider what caches the lines underlying such variables might be resident in, and in what states. We want to minimize coherence misses and cache probe activity and interconnect traffic in general. I don't usually give much thought to the location of the home NUMA node underlying such highly shared variables. On a SPARC T5440, for instance, which consists of 4 T2+ processors connected by a central coherence hub, the home node and placement of heavily accessed communication variables has very little impact on performance. The variables are frequently accessed so likely in M-state in some cache, and the location of the home node is of little consequence because a requester can use cache-to-cache transfers to get the line. Or at least that's what I thought. Recently, though, I was exploring a simple shared memory point-to-point communication model where a client writes a request into a request mailbox and then busy-waits on a response variable. It's a simple example of delegation based on message passing. The server polls the request mailbox, and having fetched a new request value, performs some operation and then writes a reply value into the response variable. As noted above, on a T5440 performance is insensitive to the placement of the communication variables -- the request and response mailbox words. But on a Sun/Oracle X4800 I noticed that was not the case and that NUMA placement of the communication variables was actually quite important. For background an X4800 system consists of 8 Intel X7560 Xeons . Each package (socket) has 8 cores with 2 contexts per core, so the system is 8x8x2. Each package is also a NUMA node and has locally attached memory. Every package has 3 point-to-point QPI links for cache coherence, and the system is configured with a twisted ladder "mobius" topology. The cache coherence fabric is glueless -- there's not central arbiter or coherence hub. The maximum distance between any two nodes is just 2 hops over the QPI links. For any given node, 3 other nodes are 1 hop distant and the remaining 4 nodes are 2 hops distant. Using a single request (client) thread and a single response (server) thread, a benchmark harness explored all permutations of NUMA placement for the two threads and the two communication variables, measuring the average round-trip-time and throughput rate between the client and server. In this benchmark the server simply acts as a simple transponder, writing the request value plus 1 back into the reply field, so there's no particular computation phase and we're only measuring communication overheads. In addition to varying the placement of communication variables over pairs of nodes, we also explored variations where both variables were placed on one page (and thus on one node) -- either on the same cache line or different cache lines -- while varying the node where the variables reside along with the placement of the threads. The key observation was that if the client and server threads were on different nodes, then the best placement of variables was to have the request variable (written by the client and read by the server) reside on the same node as the client thread, and to place the response variable (written by the server and read by the client) on the same node as the server. That is, if you have a variable that's to be written by one thread and read by another, it should be homed with the writer thread. For our simple client-server model that means using split request and response communication variables with unidirectional message flow on a given page. This can yield up to twice the throughput of less favorable placement strategies. Our X4800 uses the QPI 1.0 protocol with source-based snooping. Briefly, when node A needs to probe a cache line it fires off snoop requests to all the nodes in the system. Those recipients then forward their response not to the original requester, but to the home node H of the cache line. H waits for and collects the responses, adjudicates and resolves conflicts and ensures memory-model ordering, and then sends a definitive reply back to the original requester A. If some node B needed to transfer the line to A, it will do so by cache-to-cache transfer and let H know about the disposition of the cache line. A needs to wait for the authoritative response from H. So if a thread on node A wants to write a value to be read by a thread on node B, the latency is dependent on the distances between A, B, and H. We observe the best performance when the written-to variable is co-homed with the writer A. That is, we want H and A to be the same node, as the writer doesn't need the home to respond over the QPI link, as the writer and the home reside on the very same node. With architecturally informed placement of communication variables we eliminate at least one QPI hop from the critical path. Newer Intel processors use the QPI 1.1 coherence protocol with home-based snooping. As noted above, under source-snooping a requester broadcasts snoop requests to all nodes. Those nodes send their response to the home node of the location, which provides memory ordering, reconciles conflicts, etc., and then posts a definitive reply to the requester. In home-based snooping the snoop probe goes directly to the home node and are not broadcast. The home node can consult snoop filters -- if present -- and send out requests to retrieve the line if necessary. The 3rd party owner of the line, if any, can respond either to the home or the original requester (or even to both) according to the protocol policies. There are myriad variations that have been implemented, and unfortunately vendor terminology doesn't always agree between vendors or with the academic taxonomy papers. The key is that home-snooping enables the use of a snoop filter to reduce interconnect traffic. And while home-snooping might have a longer critical path (latency) than source-based snooping, it also may require fewer messages and less overall bandwidth. It'll be interesting to reprise these experiments on a platform with home-based snooping. While collecting data I also noticed that there are placement concerns even in the seemingly trivial case when both threads and both variables reside on a single node. Internally, the cores on each X7560 package are connected by an internal ring. (Actually there are multiple contra-rotating rings). And the last-level on-chip cache (LLC) is partitioned in banks or slices, which with each slice being associated with a core on the ring topology. A hardware hash function associates each physical address with a specific home bank. Thus we face distance and topology concerns even for intra-package communications, although the latencies are not nearly the magnitude we see inter-package. I've not seen such communication distance artifacts on the T2+, where the cache banks are connected to the cores via a high-speed crossbar instead of a ring -- communication latencies seem more regular.

I am sorry if this is the wrong section but I am starting to get desperate, please someone help me... I need to install the program mrcwa-20080820 (sourceforge.net/projects/mrcwa/) because a summer project that I am involved. • build error with boost spirit grammar (boost 1.43 and g++ 4.4.1) part II

    - by lurscher
    I'm having issues getting a small spirit/qi grammar to compile. i am using boost 1.43 and g++ 4.4.1. the input grammar header: inputGrammar.h #include <boost/config/warning_disable.hpp> #include <boost/spirit/include/qi.hpp> #include <boost/spirit/include/phoenix_core.hpp> #include <boost/spirit/include/phoenix_operator.hpp> #include <boost/spirit/include/phoenix_fusion.hpp> #include <boost/spirit/include/phoenix_stl.hpp> #include <boost/fusion/include/adapt_struct.hpp> #include <boost/variant/recursive_variant.hpp> #include <boost/foreach.hpp> #include <iostream> #include block; qi::rule< Iterator , ExpressionAST() , space_type > function_def; qi::rule< Iterator , ExpressionAST() , space_type > command; qi::rule< Iterator , ExpressionAST() , space_type > instruction;   • working on lists in python

    - by owca
I'm trying to make a small modification to django lfs project, that will allow me to deactivate products with no stocks. Unfortunatelly I'm just beginning to learn python, so I have big trouble with its syntax. That's what I'm trying to do. I'm using method 'has_variants' which returns true if product has any. Then I'm building a list from variants for this product. Next for every product in this list (I've called it 'set') I check it's stock and set bool variable 'inactive' to true if product has no stocks and to false if there are any. Finally if 'inactive' is false I'm setting self.active to 0. Code fails in line with: set[] = s How to correct it ? def deactivate(self): """If there are no stocks, deactivate the product. Used in last step of checkout. """ if self.has_variants(): for s in self.variants.filter(active=True): set[] = s for var in set: if var.get_stock_amount() == 0: inactive = True else: inactive = False else: if self.get_stock_amount() == 0: inactive = True if inactive: self.active = False return 0 error log : Traceback (most recent call last): File "manage.py", line 11, in <module> execute_manager(settings) File "/home/purplecow/rails/purpledev/site-packages/django/core/management/__i nit__.py", line 362, in execute_manager utility.execute() File "/home/purplecow/rails/purpledev/site-packages/django/core/management/__i nit__.py", line 303, in execute self.fetch_command(subcommand).run_from_argv(self.argv) File "/home/purplecow/rails/purpledev/site-packages/django/core/management/bas e.py", line 195, in run_from_argv self.execute(*args, **options.__dict__) File "/home/purplecow/rails/purpledev/site-packages/django/core/management/bas e.py", line 213, in execute translation.activate('en-us') File "/home/purplecow/rails/purpledev/site-packages/django/utils/translation/_ _init__.py", line 73, in activate return real_activate(language) File "/home/purplecow/rails/purpledev/site-packages/django/utils/translation/_ _init__.py", line 43, in delayed_loader return g['real_%s' % caller](*args, **kwargs) File "/home/purplecow/rails/purpledev/site-packages/django/utils/translation/t rans_real.py", line 205, in activate _active[currentThread()] = translation(language) File "/home/purplecow/rails/purpledev/site-packages/django/utils/translation/t rans_real.py", line 194, in translation default_translation = _fetch(settings.LANGUAGE_CODE) File "/home/purplecow/rails/purpledev/site-packages/django/utils/translation/t rans_real.py", line 180, in _fetch app = import_module(appname) File "/home/purplecow/rails/purpledev/site-packages/django/utils/importlib.py" , line 35, in import_module __import__(name) File "/home/purplecow/rails/purpledev/lfs/caching/__init__.py", line 1, in <mo dule> from listeners import * File "/home/purplecow/rails/purpledev/lfs/caching/listeners.py", line 10, in < module> from lfs.cart.models import Cart File "/home/purplecow/rails/purpledev/lfs/cart/models.py", line 8, in <module> from lfs.catalog.models import Product File "/home/purplecow/rails/purpledev/lfs/catalog/__init__.py", line 1, in <mo dule> from listeners import * File "/home/purplecow/rails/purpledev/lfs/catalog/listeners.py", line 5, in <m odule> from lfs.catalog.models import PropertyGroup File "/home/purplecow/rails/purpledev/lfs/catalog/models.py", line 589 set[] = s ^ SyntaxError: invalid syntax

  • node.js callback getting unexpected value for variable

    - by defrex
I have a for loop, and inside it a variable is assigned with var. Also inside the loop a method is called which requires a callback. Inside the callback function I'm using the variable from the loop. I would expect that it's value, inside the callback function, would be the same as it was outside the callback during that iteration of the loop. However, it always seems to be the value from the last iteration of the loop. Am I misunderstanding scope in JavaScript, or is there something else wrong? The program in question here is a node.js app that will monitor a working directory for changes and restart the server when it finds one. I'll include all of the code for the curious, but the important bit is the parse_file_list function. var posix = require('posix'); var sys = require('sys'); var server; var child_js_file = process.ARGV[2]; var current_dir = __filename.split('/'); current_dir = current_dir.slice(0, current_dir.length-1).join('/'); var start_server = function(){ server = process.createChildProcess('node', [child_js_file]); server.addListener("output", function(data){sys.puts(data);}); }; var restart_server = function(){ sys.puts('change discovered, restarting server'); server.close(); start_server(); }; var parse_file_list = function(dir, files){ for (var i=0;i<files.length;i++){ var file = dir+'/'+files[i]; sys.puts('file assigned: '+file); posix.stat(file).addCallback(function(stats){ sys.puts('stats returned: '+file); if (stats.isDirectory()) posix.readdir(file).addCallback(function(files){ parse_file_list(file, files); }); else if (stats.isFile()) process.watchFile(file, restart_server); }); } }; posix.readdir(current_dir).addCallback(function(files){ parse_file_list(current_dir, files); }); start_server(); The output from this is: file assigned: /home/defrex/code/node/ejs.js file assigned: /home/defrex/code/node/templates file assigned: /home/defrex/code/node/web file assigned: /home/defrex/code/node/server.js file assigned: /home/defrex/code/node/settings.js file assigned: /home/defrex/code/node/apps file assigned: /home/defrex/code/node/dev_server.js file assigned: /home/defrex/code/node/main_urls.js stats returned: /home/defrex/code/node/main_urls.js stats returned: /home/defrex/code/node/main_urls.js stats returned: /home/defrex/code/node/main_urls.js stats returned: /home/defrex/code/node/main_urls.js stats returned: /home/defrex/code/node/main_urls.js stats returned: /home/defrex/code/node/main_urls.js stats returned: /home/defrex/code/node/main_urls.js stats returned: /home/defrex/code/node/main_urls.js For those from the future: node.devserver.js

  • cannot move to a subdirectory of itself

    - by fire
I have 2 folders: /home/sphinx/articlesdb/ and: /home/sphinx/tmp/articlesdb/ I want to move and overwrite all of the files from tmp into the main folder. I am currently using: mv -f /home/sphinx/tmp/articlesdb/ /home/sphinx/ But I get this error: mv: cannot move `/home/sphinx/tmp/articlesdb/' to a subdirectory of itself, `/home/sphinx/articlesdb' It needs to do this as fast as possible so I don't want to copy. Should I remove /home/sphinx/articlesdb/ completely and then run the mv command or do I just need to tweak the command slightly?

  • How can I print from my lion mac mini to my windows XP, with simple file sharing?

    - by Jules
I have quite a complicated setup, perhaps. And a lot of history on this issue, I'm hoping that I don't have to buy a new printer. I've got a HP Wireless USB Print Server, which requires client software, I can't just use it as an IP Printer. The HP software is pretty poor on the mac and is no longer supported and often locks up the printer server and takes some considerable effort to actually print something. Let alone if a windows machine attaches to it first. My printer is an Epson Stylus R285. However, the windows client software is fine and we can print from windows 7 / XP without problem. We have simple file sharing setup as this is the only way I could get windows XP to talk to windows 7. However, I can't seem to get my mac mini to connect as anything other than a guest to my xp machine, to connect to the shared printer. I'm not considering some kind of internet printing as this would seems the simplest solution. But I'm not sure what will work with my setup ?

  • How to use a retail Windows 7 Professional license key to upgrade an installed Windows 7 Home Premium machine

    - by jalperin
I purchased a retail version of Windows 7 Professional and installed it on a computer. That machine has died, and I replaced it with a new computer which came with Windows 7 Home Premium already installed. I'd like to have Professional, not Home Premium, on the new machine, and I don't want to pay for an "Anytime Upgrade" because I already have a valid Windows 7 Professional license (for the dead computer). Is there a way to legally upgrade using my Professional license key? I've already installed programs, data, etc on the new machine, so I don't want to reformat and start from scratch.

  • what firefall linux distro applicance could track internet usage per device in my home?

    - by GregH
Hello, Anyone know of a community edition/open source/free firewall/gateway software product that I could install onto an old PC to act as my firewall/gateway/proxy etc, BUT for which it has the power to track internet usage per device in my home. So: a) Mandatory - Track internet usage for devices on my home network on a per device basis (e.g. various PCs/Xbox etc) b) Mandatory - Report/graph would would give a breakdown of internet usage, per device (e.g. IP address), per day. c) Desirable - as in b) above but per hour d) Desirable - realtime graph (e.g. 5 minute measurement intervals or something) that shows current internet usage per device e) Mandatory - Handles all internal<=internet requests for all protocols (e.g. HTTP, HTTPS, xbox etc) f) Mandatory - No explicit settings in clients required - i.e. Transparent Monitoring concept (for both HTTP and non-HTTP traffic like xbox, skype etc) g) Mandatory - easy "appliance" like installation onto a dedicated low spec PC thanks in advance

  • In Windows 7 Home Premium, is it possible to grant a user account the "log on as a service" right and if so, how?

    - by Ryan Johnson
The title says it all. I need to have the ability for a local user account to log on as a service on a computer running Windows 7 Home Premium. In Windows 7 Ultimate, this is accomplished by going to Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Local Security Policy and adding the user to the "Log on as a service" policy. In Home Premium, there is no Local Security Policy in the Control Panel. Is there another way to add the use to that policy (i.e. registry setting) or is my only recourse to upgrade the computer to Windows 7 Professional? Thanks in Advance, Ryan

  • Active directory authentication for Ubuntu Linux login and cifs mounting home directories...

    - by Jamie
I've configured my Ubuntu 10.04 Server LTS Beta 2 residing on a windows network to authenticate logins using active directory, then mount a windows share to serve as there home directory. Here is what I did starting from the initial installation of Ubuntu. Download and install Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS Beta 2 Get updates # sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade Install an SSH server (sshd) # sudo apt-get install openssh-server Some would argue that you should "lock sshd down" by disabling root logins. I figure if your smart enough to hack an ssh session for a root password, you're probably not going to be thwarted by the addition of PermitRootLogin no in the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file. If your paranoid or not simply not convinced then edit the file or give the following a spin: # (grep PermitRootLogin /etc/ssh/sshd_conifg && sudo sed -ri 's/PermitRootLogin ).+/\1no/' /etc/ssh/sshd_conifg) || echo "PermitRootLogin not found. Add it manually." Install required packages # sudo apt-get install winbind samba smbfs smbclient ntp krb5-user Do some basic networking housecleaning in preparation for the specific package configurations to come. Determine your windows domain name, DNS server name, and IP address for the active directory server (for samba). For conveniance I set environment variables for the windows domain and DNS server. For me it was (my AD IP address was 192.168.20.11): # WINDOMAIN=mydomain.local && WINDNS=srv1.$WINDOMAIN If you want to figure out what your domain and DNS server is (I was contractor and didn't know the network) check out this helpful reference. The authentication and file sharing processes for the Windows and Linux boxes need to have their clocks agree. Do this with an NTP service, and on the server version of Ubuntu the NTP service comes installed and preconfigured. The network I was joining had the DNS server serving up the NTP service too. # sudo sed -ri "s/^(server[ \t]).+/\1$WINDNS/" /etc/ntp.conf Restart the NTP daemon # sudo /etc/init.d/ntp restart We need to christen the Linux box on the new network, this is done by editing the host file (replace the DNS of with the FQDN of the windows DNS): # sudo sed -ri "s/^(127\.0\.0\.1[ \t]).*/\1$(hostname).$WINDOMAIN localhost $(hostname)/" /etc/hosts Kerberos configuration. The instructions that follow here aren't to be taken literally: the values for MYDOMAIN.LOCAL and srv1.mydomain.local need to be replaced with what's appropriate for your network when you edit the files. Edit the (previously installed above) /etc/krb5.conf file. Find the [libdefaults] section and change (or add) the key value pair (and it is in UPPERCASE WHERE IT NEEDS TO BE): [libdefaults] default_realm = MYDOMAIN.LOCAL Add the following to the [realms] section of the file: MYDOMAIN.LOCAL = { kdc = srv1.mydomain.local admin_server = srv1.mydomain.local default_domain = MYDOMAIN.LOCAL } Add the following to the [domain_realm] section of the file: .mydomain.local = MYDOMAIN.LOCAL mydomain.local = MYDOMAIN.LOCAL Conmfigure samba. When it's all said done, I don't know where SAMBA fits in ... I used cifs to mount the windows shares ... regardless, my system works and this is how I did it. Replace /etc/samba/smb.conf (remember I was working from a clean distro of Ubuntu, so I wasn't worried about breaking anything): [global] security = ads realm = MYDOMAIN.LOCAL password server = 192.168.20.11 workgroup = MYDOMAIN idmap uid = 10000-20000 idmap gid = 10000-20000 winbind enum users = yes winbind enum groups = yes template homedir = /home/%D/%U template shell = /bin/bash client use spnego = yes client ntlmv2 auth = yes encrypt passwords = yes winbind use default domain = yes restrict anonymous = 2 Start and stop various services. # sudo /etc/init.d/winbind stop # sudo service smbd restart # sudo /etc/init.d/winbind start Setup the authentication. Later I'll come back and add how I got the cifs automounting to work. Numerous resources were considered so I could figure this out. Here is a short list (a number of these links point to mine own questions on the topic): Samba Kerberos Active Directory WinBind Mounting Linux user home directories on CIFS server Authenticating OpenBSD against Active Directory How to use Active Directory to authenticate linux users Mounting windows shares with Active Directory permissions Using Active Directory authentication with Samba on Ubuntu 9.10 server 64bit How practical is to authenticate a Linux server against AD? • Msys cd .. command takes me to home directory instead of parent

    - by Adrian
I'm using Msys on Windows 7 with what I believe to be a Bash shell. I want to navigate the following directory structure: Drive (M:) +--- Coding +--- CPP +--- projects +--- other_folder_1 +--- other_folder_2 My fstab file contains the following line: M:/Coding/CPP/projects/ /home/Adrian/ ... which makes the projects folder my starting directory when opening the shell. Unfortunately when I try to cd .. out of projects, I end up in /home instead of CPP. I imagine this might be related to what I did in the fstab file. Is there any way for me to retain the projects folder as my starting directory while being able to cd into its parent directories?

  • Does Windows Virtual PC support virtual applications with an XP Home Edition guest?

    - by endolith
I've installed Windows Virtual PC in Windows 7 and have the XP Mode virtual PC working. I can run virtual applications with it and the integration features all work. I used Disk2VHD to convert my existing XP Home drive into a VHD, so I can use it as a virtual PC, too. It works in general, but it sometimes pops up the "Could not enable integration features" error. I don't see the host computer's drives in the guest, and I don't see the guest's applications in the host's Start menu. Is this just because the guest is XP Home instead of XP Pro? Do I have to reinstall all these apps in the XP Mode VHD in order to get them as virtual apps? Could something else be preventing it from working?

  • OSX Reset Home Permissions and ACLs - how long should it take?

    - by andyface
Having screwwed up my permissions by trying to have two users accessing one home folder I'm now going through the process of reseting my main user home permissions via the OSX install disk utilities, which seems to be taking a while. Does this process take a while to do, though I assume it depends on how many files I have in the folder, which in my case is a good few 100 GBs. At what point should I be concerned that it may have got stuck and thus reset my computer and try again? I assume, though not sure that if the little circle indicator is still moving then it's not completely frozen, but as there's no progress bar or details I'm not sure how true that is.

  • Would it be smarter to setup a Linux development server at home, or to use a hosted server?

    - by markle976
I am in the process of learning as much as I can about LAMP. I was wondering if I should set a web server on my home network, or use a service like Rackspace (cloud space)? I need to have root access, to be able to access it remotely via SSH/FTP/HTTP, and to be able to install things like subversion, etc. I currently have Comcast so I have plenty of bandwidth, but I am not sure if this would violate the TOS, and/or compromise the security of my home network. Pricing for these cloud hosts, seems reasonable ($11 per month plus about $0.10 per GB of bandwidth), but I am not sure if I will have to control I am looking for.

  • Can I run a web site from my home network without jeapordizing other computers on my LAN?

    - by Alchemical
I have a home LAN with 5 computers and a NAS, all connected to a Linksys router which is connected to my Cox cable modem. I'm interested in having one of my computers run an IIS-based web site and to have it be accessible to the internet with a static IP. However, I do not want o jeapordize the safety of the other computers on my home network! Is there anyway to do this safely, or as safe as possible? I may also like to run an FTP server from this computer. Finally, optionally I would like to allow remote access to this computer from the internet--but it seems to me that that may increase the security risk to the other computers substantially.

  • How can I make sftp accounts that can only access their home directory?

    - by LonnieBest
I'm using Ubuntu Server 9.10. I need to setup 6 accounts for users that will exclusively need sftp. When the user logs in, I need them to only have access to their home directory. I don't want them to be able to navigate to any other places in the file system. I need their ability to type commands to be limited to only the commands needed to view and transfer files back and forth to their home directory. Can anyone offer some guidance on setting thing up this way?

  • Multiple Subnets on home network... would this work?

    - by rockinthesixstring
We are looking at renting out the basement suit in our home and want to offer internet as part of the package. I however do not want the downstairs tennent to have access to our network (home office = private data). We currently have a pfsense firewall as our gateway and a Windows Server 2003 box is doing our primary DHCP (192.168.0.0/24) and DNS. Here's what I'd like to do... I'd like to setup another subnet on the DHCP server (192.168.1.0/24), and hook in another wireless router (as access point only) and address it as 192.168.1.1... from there the router will hook into our primary switch and then out through the firewall. Will Server 2003 (If I add a 192.168.1.x/24 IP to the nic) serve DHCP to the devices that connect to the new router, and will it isolate that from our network? Thanks in advance... I'm very new to multiple subnets.
