How would a user stay logged in to a REST-based website?

A year or so ago I asked this question: Can you help me understand this? “Common REST Mistakes: Sessions are irrelevant”. My question was essentially this: Okay, I get that HTTP authentication is done automatically on every message - but how? Is the username/password sent with every request? Doesn't that just increase attack surface area? I feel like I'm missing part of the puzzle. The answers I received made perfect sense in the context of a mobile (iPhone, Android, WP7) app - when talking to a REST service, the app would just send user credentials along with each request. That worked great for me. But now, I would like to better understand how one would secure a REST-like website, like StackOverflow itself or something like Reddit. How would things work if it was a user logged in via a web browser instead of logged in via an iPhone app? What happens when a user logs in? Are the credentials saved in the browser somehow? How would the browser know what credentials to send with subsequent REST requests? What if it's a JavaScript call to a webservice? How would the JavaScript call include user credentials? I'll be quite frank: my understanding of security when it comes to websites is pretty limited. I enjoyed working with REST services from an app perspective, but now I want to try and build a website that is based on REST principles, and I'm finding myself to be pretty lost. If there is anything in the above question that is unclear that you'd like me to clarify, please leave a comment and I'll address it.

Return a Const Char* by reading an @property NSString in separate class

I'm probably being an idiot here, but I cannot for the life of me find the answer that I'm looking for. However, I cannot seem to return "iCalLocation" at all. The compiler fails on the line where I am initializing the "iCalLocation" variable: "Cannot convert to pointer type" Being frank: I am new to Objective-C, and I am still trying to figure points, properties, and such out.

breadth-first traversal of directory tree is not lazy

I try to traverse the diretory tree. A naive depth-first traversal seems not to produce the data in a lazy fashion and runs out of memory. I next tried a breadth first approach, which shows the same problem - it uses all the memory available and then crashes. the code i have is: getFilePathBreadtFirst :: FilePath -> IO [FilePath] getFilePathBreadtFirst fp = do fileinfo <- getInfo fp res :: [FilePath] <- if isReadableDirectory fileinfo then do children <- getChildren fp lower <- mapM getFilePathBreadtFirst children return (children ++ concat lower) return (children ++ concat () else return [fp] -- should only return the files? return res getChildren :: FilePath -> IO [FilePath] getChildren path = do names <- getUsefulContents path let namesfull = map (path </>) names return namesfull testBF fn = do -- crashes for /home/frank, does not go to swap fps <- getFilePathBreadtFirst fn putStrLn $ unlines fps I think all the code is either linear or tail recursive, and I would expect that the listing of filenames starts immediately, but in fact it does not. Where is the error in my code and my thinking? where have I lost lazy evaluation?

2011 The Year of Awesomesauce

So I was talking to one of my friends, Cathy Dew, and I’m wondering how to start out this post. What kind of title should I put? Somehow we’re just randomly throwing things out and this title pops into my head the one you see above. I woke up today to the buzz of a text message. I spent New Years laying around until 3 am watching Warehouse 13 Episodes and drinking champagne. It was one of the best New Year’s I spent with my boyfriend and my cat. I figured I would sleep in until Noon, but ended up waking up around 11:15 to that text message buzz. I guess my DE, Rachel Appel, had texted me “Happy New Years”, because Rachel is that kind of person. I immediately proceeded to check my email. I noticed my live account had a hit. The account I rarely ever use had an email. I sort of had that sinking suspicion I was going to get Silverlight MVP right? So I open the email and something out of the blue happens it says “blah blah blah SharePoint Server MVP blah blah…”. I’m sitting here a little confused what? Really? Just about when you give up on something the unexplained happens. I am grateful for what I have every day. So let me tell you a story. I was a senior in high school and it was December 31st, 1999. A couple days prior my grandmother was complaining she had a cold and her assisted living facility was not going to let her see a doctor. She claimed to be very sick. New Year’s Eve Day 1999 my grandmother was rushed to the hospital sometime very early in the morning. My uncle, my little brother, and myself were sitting in the waiting room eagerly awaiting news. The Sydney Opera House was playing in the background as New Years 2000 for Australia was ringing in. They come out and they tell us my grandmother has pneumonia. She is in the ICU in critical condition. Eventually time passes in the day and my parents take my brother and I home. So in the car we had a huge fight that ended in the worst new years of my life. The next 30 days were the worst 30 days of my life. I went to the hospital every single day to do my homework and watch my grandmother. Each day was a challenge mentally and physically as my grandmother berated me in her demented state. On the 30th day my grandmother ended up in critical condition in the ICU maxed out on painkillers. At approximately 3 am I hear my parents telling me they don’t want to wake me up and that my grandmother had passed away. I must have cried more collectively that day than any other day in my life. Every New Years Even since I have cried thinking about who she was and what she represented. She was human looking back she wasn’t anything great, but she was one of the positive lights in my life. Her and my dad and my other grandmother constantly tried to make me feel great when my mother was telling me the opposite. I’d like to think since 2000 the past 11 years have been the best 11 years of my life. I got out of a bad situation by using the tools that I had in front of me. Good grades and getting into a college so I could aspire to be the person that I wanted to be. I had some great people along the way to help me out. So getting to the point I like to help people further there lives somehow in the best way I can possibly help out. This New Years was one of the great years that helped me forget the past and focus on the present. It makes me realize how far I’ve come since high school and even since college. The one thing I’ve been grappling with over the years is how do you feel good about making money while helping others out. I’d to think I try really hard to give back to my community. I could not have done what I did without other people’s help. I sent out an email prior to even announcing I got the award today. I can’t say I did everything on my own. It’s not possible. I had the help of others every step of the way. I’m not sure if this makes sense but the award can’t just be mine. This award is really owned by each and everyone who helped me get here. From my dad to my grandmother to Rachel Appel to Bob Hunt to Jason Gallicchio to Cathy Dew to Mark Rackley to Johnny Ennion to Lee Brandt to Jeff Julian to John Alexander to Lori Gowin and to many others. Yes, I did it - Skydiving in Mauritius

Finally, I did it or better said we did it. Already back in November last year I saw the big billboard advertisement of Skydive Austral Mauritius near Caudan Waterfront in Port Louis and decided for myself that this is going to be the perfect birthday gift for my wife. Simply out of curiosity I would join her tandem jump with a second instructor. Due to her pregnancy of our son I had to be patient... But then finally, her birthday had arrived and on our midnight celebration session I showed her her netbook with the website preloaded. Actually, it was the "perfect" timing... Recovery from her cesarean is fine, local weather conditions are gorgious and the children were under surveillance of my mum - spending her annual holidays on the island. So, after late wake-up in the morning, we packed our stuff and off we went. According to Google Maps direction indication we had to drive for roughly 50km (only) but traffic here in Mauritius is always challenging. The dropzone is at the Zone Industrielle Mon Loisir Sugar Estate near Riviere du Rempart at the northern east coast. Anyways, we were not in a hurry and arrived there shortly after noon. The access road to the airfield are just small down-driven paths through sugar cane fields and according to our daughter "it's bumpy!". True true true... The facilities at Skydive Austral Mauritius are complete except for food. Enough space for parking, easy handling at the reception and a lot to see for the kids. There's even a big terrace with several sets of tables and chairs, small bar for soft drinks, strictly non-alcoholic. The team over there is all welcoming and warm-hearthy! Having the kids with us was no issue at all. Quite the opposite, our daugther was allowed to discover a lot of things than we adults did. Even visiting the small air plane was on the menu for her. Really great stuff! While waiting for our turn we enjoyed watching other people getting ready in the jump gear, taking off with the Cessna, and finally coming back down on the tandem parachute. Actually, the different expressions on their faces was one of the best parts while waiting. Great mental preparation as my wife was getting more anxious about her first jump... {loadposition content_adsense} First, we got some information about the procedures on the plane about how to get seated, tight up with our instructors and how to get ready for the jump off the plane as soon as we arrive the height of 10.000 ft. All well explained and easy to understand after all.Next, we met with our jumpers Chris and Lee aka "Rasta" to get dressed and ready for take-off. Those guys are really cool and relaxed for their job. From that point on, the DVD session / recording for my wife's birthday started and we really had a lot of fun... The difference between that small Cessna and a commercial flight with an Airbus or a Boeing is astronomic! The climb up to 10.000 ft took us roughly 25 minutes and we enjoyed the magnificent view over the turquoise lagunes near Poste de Flacq, Lafayette and Isle d'Ambre on the north-east coast. After flying through the clouds we sun-bathed and looked over "iced-sugar covered" Mauritius. You might have a look at the picture gallery of Skydive Mauritius for better imagination. The moment of truth, or better said, point of no return came after approximately 25 minutes. The door opens, moving into position on the side on top of the wheel and... out! Back flip and free fall! Slight turns and Wooooohooooo! through the clouds... It so amazing and breath-taking! So undescribable! You have to experience this yourself! Some seconds later the parachute opened and we glided smoothly with some turns and spins back down to the dropzone. The rest of the family could hear and see us soon and the landing was easy going. We never had any doubts or fear about our instructors. They did a great job and we are looking forward to book our next job. mount_afp on linux, user rights

I need to mount a remote filesystem on a linux box using the afp protocol. The linux box runs an old Debian 4. I downloaded the source code of mount_afp, compiled it and installed it with all the required packages. Then created /etc/fuse with the following command: mknod /dev/fuse c 10 229 (according to the instructions here) I can mount the remote filesystem as root by executing: mount_afp afp://USER:PASSWD@REMOTE_SERVER/FOLDER /mnt/MOUNTPOINT/ but the same command fails when run as normal user (of the local machine). After reading here and there, I created a group fuse, and added my normal user U to the group fuse: [prompt] groups U U fuse Then modified the group of /dev/fuse, that now has the following rights: 0 crwxrwx--- 1 root fuse 10, 229 Feb 8 15:33 /dev/fuse However, if the user U tries to mount the remote filesystem by using the same command as above, U gets the following error: Incorrect permissions on /dev/fuse, mode of device is 20770, uid/gid is 0/1007. But your effective uid/gid is 1004/1004 But the user U with uid 1004 has also gid 1007 (group fuse). I might think the problem is related to real/effective/etc. ID, but I do not know how to proceed and could not find any clear instructions. Could you please help me? There is also another problem. If I mount /mnt/MOUNTPOINT as root and run ls -l /mnt, I get: drwxrwxrwx 15 root root 466 Feb 8 16:34 MONTPOINT If I run ls -l /mnt as normal user U I get: ? ?????????? ? ? ? ? ? MOUNTPOINT in fact when I try to cd /mnt/MOUNTPOINT I get: $-> cd /mnt/MOUNTPOINT -sh: cd: /mnt/MOUNTPOINT: Not a directory Then I unmount /mnt/MOUNTPOINT as root and run again ls -l /mnt as normal user U I get: 0 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 6 Feb 8 15:32 MOUNTPOINT/ After reading Frank's answer, I killed every shell/process running with privileges of user U. Still U cannot mount the remote filesystem, but the error message has changed. Now it is: "Login error: Authentication failed". The problem is not related to remote login/password since the same command works perfectly when run as root of the local machine. Since I cannot get mount_afp to work with normal users, I decided to follow mgorven's suggestion. So I run the commands: mount_afp -o allow_other afp://USER:PASSWD@REMOTE_SERVER/FOLDER /mnt/MOUNTPOINT/ and mount_afp -o user=U afp://USER:PASSWD@REMOTE_SERVER/FOLDER /mnt/MOUNTPOINT/ The mount succeeds but user U cannot access the mount point. If U executes ls -l in /mnt U@LOCAL_HOST [/mnt] $-> ls -l ls: cannot access MOUNT_POINT: Permission denied total 0 ? ?????????? ? ? ? ? ? MOUNT_POINT Is it so hard to have this utility working?

VBA + Polymorphism: Override worksheet functions from 3rd party

my company makes extensive use of a data provider using a (closed source) VBA plugin. In principal, every query follows follows a certain structure: Fill one cell with a formula, where arguments to the formula specify the query the range of that formula is extended (not an arrray formula!) and cells below/right are filled with data For this to work, however, a user has to have a terminal program installed on the machine, as well as a com-plugin referenced in VBA/Excel. My Problem These Excelsheets are used and extended by multiple users, and not all of them have access to the data provider. While they can open the sheet, it will recalculate and the data will be gone. However, frequent recalculation is required. I would like every user to be able to use the sheets, without executing a very specific set of formulas. Attempts remove the reference on those computers where I do not have terminal access. This generates a NAME error i the cell containing the query (acceptable), but this query overrides parts of the data (not acceptable) If you allow the program to refresh, all data will be gone after a failed query Replace all formulas with the plain-text result in the respective cells (press a button and loop over every cell...). Obviously destroys any refresh-capabilities the querys offer for all subsequent users, so pretty bad, too. A theoretical idea, and I'm not sure how to implement it: Replace the functions offered by the plugin with something that will be called either first (and relay the query through to the original function, if thats available) or instead of the original function (by only deploying the solution on non-terminal machines), which just returns the original value. More specifically, if my query function is used like this: =GETALLDATA(Startdate, Enddate, Stockticker, etc) I would like to transparently swap the function behind the call. Do you see any hope, or am I lost? I appreciate your help. PS: Of course I'm talking about Bloomberg... Some additional points to clarify issues raise by Frank: The formula in the sheets may not be changed. This is mission-critical software, and its way too complex for any sane person to try and touch it. Only excel and VBA may be used (which is the reason for the previous point...) It would be sufficient to prevent execution of these few specific formulas/functions on a specific machine for all excel sheets to come This looks more and more like a problem for stackoverflow ;-)

Should I choose KVM/XEN over OpenVZ or use them together?

I've got a dual xeon e5504 server, with [for now] only 8GB of ram. Storage is'n impressive either: 3x 146GB sas in raid5 + 500GB sata drives. Currently it works as a development server, but it's over speced for our needs and since our development methods changed through last 2 years we decided it will work as a production system for some of our applications + we would like to have a separate system for testing/research. Our apps are mainly web apps deployed on tomcats [plural as some of the apps require older versions] and connected to Postgres. I would like to have a production system, where only httpd+tomcat+db are setup and nothing else runs there. Sterile system. Apart from that, I would like a test system, where I can play with different JVM settings, deploy my test apps, play with tomcat/httpd settings and restart them without interfering with the production system. Apart from that, I would like to be able to play with different linux flavors, with newer kernels to test how they work etc. I know, this is not possible with OpenVZ and I would have to choose KVM for that. I am thinking about merging the two, and setting up a KVM to be able to work with different systems [linux only to be frank] + use openVZ to setup separate machines for my development needs. I would simply go with that, but reading here and there about the performance impact full virtualization has over containers and looking at the specs of my server makes me think twice about it. I don't want to loose too much performance, especially because of the nature of my apps [few JVMs running at the same time]. It will be my first time with virtualization, apart from using desktop virtualbox/vmserver. Although I am a fast learner I don't want to mess with the main system so much that it will break the production apps or make them crawl. Although they are more or less internal apps and they don't produce much load, they need to be stable. I've read, that KVM host is a normal linux installation and it allows to run normal processes on it. If that is so, does it allow to run openVZ as well? I mean... can I have KVM and OpenVZ running on the same system/kernel? Or do I have to setup another system to run OpenVZ containers? How much performance impact can this have for me? Will my hardware suffice? oh and one more thing... unfortunately I'm quite limited with the funds... I'm looking for a free solution only :/

git pull gives error: 401 Authorization Required while accessing https://git.foo.com/bar.git

My macbook pro is able to clone/push/pull from the company git server. My cent 6.3 vm gets a 401 error git clone https://git.acme.com/git/torque-setup "error: The requested URL returned error: 401 Authorization Required while accessing https://git.acme.com/git/torque-setup/info/refs As a work around, I've tried creating a folder, with an empty repository, then setting the remote to the company server. I get the same error when trying a git pull The remotes are identical between the machines MacBook Pro (working) git --version git version 1.7.10.2 (Apple Git-33) git remote -v origin https://git.acme.com/git/torque-setup (fetch) origin https://git.acme.com/git/torque-setup (push) Cent 6.3 (not working) yum install -y git git --version git version 1.7.1 git remote -v origin https://git.acme.com/git/torque-setup (fetch) origin https://git.acme.com/git/torque-setup (push) The git server only allows https. Not git or ssh connections. Why is the macbook pro able to do a git pull, while the cent os machine can't? Solution Update 2013-5-15 As jku mentioned, the culprit is the old version of git installed on the cent box. Handling multiple column data with Java

I am writing an application that reads in a large number of basic user details in the following format; once read in it then allows the user to search for a user's details using their email: NAME ROLE EMAIL --------------------------------------------------- Joe Bloggs Manager [email protected] John Smith Consultant [email protected] Alan Wright Tester [email protected] ... The problem I am suffering is that I need to store a large number of details of all people that have worked at the company. The file containing these details will be written on a yearly basis simply for reporting purposes, but the program will need to be able to access these details quickly. The way I aim to access these files is to have a program that asks the user for the name of the unique email of the member of staff and for the program to then return the name and the role from that line of the file. I've played around with text files, but am struggling with how I would handle multiple columns of data when it comes to searching this large file. What is the best format to store such data in? A text file? XML? The size doesn't bother me, but I'd like to be able to search it as quickly as possible. The file will need to contain a lot of entries, probably over the 10K mark over time.

So I created an example using a generic list and connected it to the WPF datagrid, but it doesn't show any data. What do I need to change on the code below to get it to show data in the datagrid? C# COM objects with VB6/asp error

I'm trying to expose a C# class library via COM so that I can use it in a classic asp web site. I've used sn - k, regasm and gacutil. About all I can do now though is echo back strings. Methods which take Class variables as input are not working for me. ie my test method EchoPerson(Person p) which returns a string of the first and last name doesn't work. I get a runtime error 5 - Invalid procedure call or argument. Please let me know what I am missing. Also I have no intellisence in VB. What do I need to do to get the intellisence working. Unexpected Blank lines in python output

I have a bit of code that runs through a dictionary and outputs the values from it in a CSV format. Strangely I'm getting a couple of blank lines where all the output of all of the dictionary entries is blank. I've read the code and can't understand has anything except lines with commas can be output. The blank line should have values in it, so extra \n is not the cause. Can anyone advise why I'd be getting blank lines? Other times I run the missing line appears. If its nil, then it simply displays all of the solutions on my site, but if its not nil, then it displays all of the solutions for the given user id. Lorem ipsum ... </p> I'd like to, without markup if possible, cause this text to flow into two columns (1-3 on the left, 4-6 on the right). The reason for my hesitation to add a column using a <div> is that this text is entered by the client via a WYSIWYG editor, so any elements I inject are likely to be killed later on inexplicably. Active Directory - Query Group for all machines

Hi, I'm trying to obtain a list of all Machines that are members of a known group. I have the group GUID and am constructing a query using the "memberof=" format and filtering by ObjectClass. This works fine but doesn't return machines if the PrimaryGroup attribute of a machine is set to be the known group. In this case, that machine won't be returned. I've found the explanation of why this is in the following link (See Joe Kaplan's response) http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/29773581/active-directory-query-c.aspx Unfortunately the outlined answer is how to obtain the list of groups from a given user. I'd like to do the reverse and from a given group obtain the list of machines. It seems that the PrimaryGroup information is stored on the Machine/User side so I'm not sure if what I want to do is even possible. I had thought I would be able to query the TokenGroup attribute of the known group and then construct a query to return all machines that have the TokenGroup attribute set but it seems that not all groups have this attribute. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? If any clarification is needed let me know! Cheers, Ben
