• How to Install Linux on my PC

  Hi i need some help to install the drivers from my pc, on Ubuntu 10.10 i just installed it, and i a newbie on Ubuntu, but i understand a bit of Windows...but i want to try ubuntu and then Maybe change to UBUNTU!!! • nut (UPS) and SSL certificates

  Today I installed nut on my Ubuntu server (14.03). $ uname -a Linux boson 3.13.0-24-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Fri May 2 23:30:00 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux The UPS is connected to another server (called neutron), so I use nut-client to keep tabs on the UPS state. When I do sudo upsc [email protected] I get: Init SSL without certificate database battery.charge: 15 battery.charge.low: 10 battery.charge.warning: 50 battery.date: not set battery.mfr.date: 2012/11/27 : The first line of the output concerns me. I've not seen this on other installations of nut on Debian-based servers. What can I do to get rid of that line? EDIT: This "Init SSL without certificate database" is extra annoying because it is not part of the output of upsc and therefore I cannot grep it out.

• Avoiding "double" subscriptions

  I am working on a website that requires a bit of marketing; let me explain. This website is offering a single, say, iTunes 50$ voucher to a lucky winner. To be entered in the draw, you need to invite (and has to join) at least one friend to the website. Pretty straightforward. Now, of course it would be easy for anyone to just create a fake account and invite that account so, I was thinking of some other way to somehow find out of possible cheating. I was thinking of an IP check on the newly subscribed (invited) user, and if there is the same IP logged in the last 24 hours, and if that's the case, investigate more about it. But I was thinking that maybe there is a more clever way around this issue. Has anyone ever though about this? What other solutions did you try? Thanks in advance.

• Wordpress : Automatically transfer media files to Amazon S3

  I've been using VPS to host 7 Wordpress websites, most of them require big storage but very little RAM and traffic. So I'm thinking of moving the static files(uploads folder) content to Amazon S3 and I'm looking for the most viable solution to this. I want every website to have their own bucket and newly uploaded media files automatically uploaded to Amazon S3 without using plugin. I'm ok with cron job, for example the files were uploaded first to my server, then transferred to S3 and deleted from my server every 24 hour. Or is there any way for me to change the default upload directory to my S3 bucket without sacrificing any Wordpress functionality(resize/title etc)? What do you think the most efficient way to do this? Currently I'm looking at this plus cron job but I would like to know better option if it exist.

  I took my old computer (AMD 5600+, 2GB RAM, 880gt, 250GB SATA, etc) and decided to jump and try Ubuntu for the first time. I have very very little knowledge (Red Hat when I was younger) with Linux in general. My main desktop is Windows 7 and my plan is to use the Ubuntu computer as a file server sort of speak. I want to be able to setup back up schedules from my Windows PC to the Ubuntu PC (plan on leaving this on 24/7 to double as a Seedbox) How do I go on to doing this?

• Environment font size is too small

  So I've chosen a font by System Settings - Application Appearance - Fonts And there I've adjusted all fonts to be of 14th size. And also checked "Use my KDE fonts..." in Gtk+ appearance. I've also did the same using kdesudo systemsettings But still some fonts are tiny! It's not the 14th size! Edit 2: I thought it might be one of Gnome font settings. So I've increased all fonts in gnome-tweak-tool sudo gnome-tweak-tool gconf-editor sudo gconf-editor No help! Edit: Ubuntu tweak also gives no help (note the tiny fonts!): Edit: It looks like the problem is with gtk3: when I compile emacs 24.0.92 with gtk3 - i get small menu fonts. When I do the same with a default gtk2 - everything is all right.

• DHCP won't start / subnetting

  I recently changed the IP address on an Ubuntu 12.04 server I have in my lab, which is running isc-dhcp-server. After doing so and modifying the dhcpd.conf file, my dhcp service would not start. I basically used the same configuration, except I modified everything to use /25 scopes rather than /24. When I try to start / restart the service, I see the following: MY@ubuntuserver:~$ sudo service isc-dhcp-server restart stop: Unknown instance: isc-dhcp-server start/running, process 20918 It looks like it starts, but it isn't actually running and Webmin states that the DHCP service is not running. So my question is, does isc-dhcp-server support subnetting (CIDR) style scopes, or must they be class A / B / C scopes (doesn't seem likely)? I've double checked the interface reference (this is a VM with only one defined eth0 interface) and everything else I can thing of.

  I have a question about Software Architecture, anyone can help me or give me some hints currently, I have a J2EE project which deploys in a server, I should a Java Standard project(J2SE) should run 24 hours x 7 days to monitor something it could not run separately, because the Java Project shared the some same classes such as Java Bean classes with the J2EE project maybe my design is not correct, can anyone suggest me what should I do? Using SOA? is this correct? my current solution is run this java project using a bash, but I dont think it is then best idea. I list my class packages com.company.alteck com.company.altronics com.company.gamming com.company.jaycar com.company.jup com.company.rpg com.company.sansai com.company.wiretech com.company.yatsal com.ebay.api com.ebay.bean com.ebay.credential com.ozsstock.finals com.ozstock.adapter com.ozstock.aspectj com.ozstock.model com.ozstock.persistence com.ozstock.service com.ozstock.suppliers my structure likes this, all the packages contains "company" should run separately, but depends on the model bean class. can anyone give me some hints to redesign?

In this post, I’ll share best practices on the configuration of data nodes to achieve optimum performance on the latest generations of multi-core, multi-thread CPU designs. Configuring the Data Nodes The configuration of data node threads can be managed in two ways via the config.ini file: - Simply set MaxNoOfExecutionThreads to the appropriate number of threads to be run in the data node, based on the number of threads presented by the processors used in the host or VM. - Use the new ThreadConfig variable that enables users to configure both the number of each thread type to use and also which CPUs to bind them too. The flexible configuration afforded by the multi-threaded data node enhancements means that it is possible to optimise data nodes to use anything from a single CPU/thread up to a 48 CPU/thread server. Co-locating the MySQL Server with a single data node can fully utilize servers with 64 – 80 CPU/threads. It is also possible to co-locate multiple data nodes per server, but this is now only required for very large servers with 4+ CPU sockets dense multi-core processors. 24 Threads and Beyond! An example of how to make best use of a 24 CPU/thread server box is to configure the following: - 8 ldm threads - 4 tc threads - 3 recv threads - 3 send threads - 1 rep thread for asynchronous replication. Each of those threads should be bound to a CPU. It is possible to bind the main thread (schema management domain) and the IO threads to the same CPU in most installations. In the configuration above, we have bound threads to 20 different CPUs. We should also protect these 20 CPUs from interrupts by using the IRQBALANCE_BANNED_CPUS configuration variable in /etc/sysconfig/irqbalance and setting it to 0x0FFFFF. The reason for doing this is that MySQL Cluster generates a lot of interrupt and OS kernel processing, and so it is recommended to separate activity across CPUs to ensure conflicts with the MySQL Cluster threads are eliminated. When booting a Linux kernel it is also possible to provide an option isolcpus=0-19 in grub.conf. The result is that the Linux scheduler won't use these CPUs for any task. Only by using CPU affinity syscalls can a process be made to run on those CPUs. By using this approach, together with binding MySQL Cluster threads to specific CPUs and banning CPUs IRQ processing on these tasks, a very stable performance environment is created for a MySQL Cluster data node. On a 32 CPU/Thread server: - Increase the number of ldm threads to 12 - Increase tc threads to 6 - Provide 2 more CPUs for the OS and interrupts. - The number of send and receive threads should, in most cases, still be sufficient. On a 40 CPU/Thread server, increase ldm threads to 16, tc threads to 8 and increment send and receive threads to 4. On a 48 CPU/Thread server it is possible to optimize further by using: - 12 tc threads - 2 more CPUs for the OS and interrupts - Avoid using IO threads and main thread on same CPU - Add 1 more receive thread. Summary As both this and the previous post seek to demonstrate, the multi-threaded data node extensions not only serve to increase performance of MySQL Cluster, they also enable users to achieve significantly improved levels of utilization from current and future generations of massively multi-core, multi-thread processor designs. • Is C++ really a bad language for beginners? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Is C++ suitable as a first language? 24 answers I'm learning C++ right now, and it's the first language I'm learning. I keep seeing on stackexchange and other forums (Reddit, etc.) that I should drop C++ and learn a higher level language like Python or Java. The only arguments I see are that "C++ is harder to learn and is more low-level than others." which don't really give a reason NOT to learn it. I want to know if there are any actual reasons for dropping C++ and taking up another, "easier" language. Or if I should keep focusing on it, and just learn others later (which is what I plan on doing).

• 11.04 Wireless is disabled by hardware switch Hp Compaq nc6220

  Here is some backstory if it is helpful: I had Windows Vista on my computer and I wanted to use wubi to install Ubuntu, everything was fine until I booted into the OS. It said my wireless was disabled by a Hardware Switch. So I booted back into Vista and it disabled there too. I have gotten rid of vista and installed 11.04 instead. It still has this error and as far as I know there is no switch anywhere and the fn keys do nothing. • Best/ most efficient way to learn a programming language as a beginner [closed]

  I am a student and have obtained a one year placement at a business that develops an e-commerce system using C#, HTML, WPF, javascript, ASP and more. Although I do have a little bit of knowledge, I find myself being assigned a lot of tasks that are beyond me and even when I ask for help, the response I get is often cryptic to me. I stare at as much code as possible to just try and "throw myself into it" but I often just get lost in the code I like to consider myself a fast learner and I am damn determined to be a good programmer. I would just like to ask if there are some tips for me to catch up as quick as possible? I don't want to be a nuisance and sit here and ask for help 24/7. I just want to crack on!

• Dell L501X Display Port Screen issue

  I got a Dell XPS L501X with a mini display port to VGA connector for my External Screen. On Displays it shows me: Acer Technologies 24" (which is the monitor) but only lets me up to 1024x768 resolution (The native resolution of this monitor is 1920x1200). I tried adding a new mode with xrandr, but when I applied it, it reverted back to 1024x768. As far as I know, the display port is controlled by the Intel card, right? Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks Using Ubuntu 11.10 32bit

  I'm creating an animation "engine" for a 2D game which loads a *.2dped file to load a character (it's body part positions, height, length of arm etc), and then a *.2difp to manipulate the body part positions. I'd like to know what the key body parts (bones, I mean) I should allow to be manipulated. • Why is Cloudflare waiting for name servers for over 4 days?

  I've registered for Cloudflare's free plan and have completed the process of redirecting the DNS as instructed, including changing the name servers. This was done 4 days ago. The problem is that cloudflare is giving me: "websites" -- "Finishing up. Waiting for your name servers to change to * Please allow up to 24 hours to complete this process (info)" "dashboards" -- "Analytics data could not be loaded. You do not have any initialized zones" I can see via traceroute that CloudFlare is the DNS to my site. Also, somehow this has messed up with my google analytics account so I have no idea if I get visitors to my site or not. What should be done to fix this?

• I think I deleted my windows

  I tried to intall backtrack using a bootable cd. I think I clicked the option and it overwrote my windows 7. How do I get that back? I do not have a windows restore cd. Backtrack did not actually install at the time it stated there was a problem at 24% I then tried to get into Windows after shutting down and OS never booted up again. Does this mean I lost all my documents and programs? Can I call the company that sold my laptop to and get a bootable CD? Thank you.

• How to have an emacs function called when display size changes?

  I'm trying to define an emacs function that will be called when the display size changes, currently I'm not finding any hooks that I can use for this. I an NOT trying to notice when the emacs window changes size. My use case is that I have emacs open on my laptop, then I close it and bring it to work and plug it into a bigger monitor and turn it on via the keyboard. After logging in my windows are all in the top left corner. I want emacs to notice the screen size change and call my function allow me to reposition the window and change the font size. yes, I know about stay but I also want to change the font size. I'm running emacs 24.3.1 from emacsformacosx.com under OSX Mavericks

• IIS to parse php in a .dll files

  The .dll files ain't the dynamic link library. That's what the client side software calls for (cannot change). Its essentially a php script that should run and return specific values. However currently it simply downloads it and that results in a failure. That's what it results in on a Apache server: [Update] NewVersion=1 UpdateFileNumber=1 UpdateFile1=update1/LPServerInfo.dat ServerNumber=1 Server1=http://88.159.116.217/ here it is on IIS: 198.24.133.74:8080/update.dll?0 renaming it to php works fine for testing - it runs and returns values. I edited the MIME and set .dll to application/x-httpd-php but that doesn't seem to work in IIS. Any solutions?
