  Hello, I am running into an "out of memory" error from OpenGL on glReadPixels() under low-memory conditions. I am writing a plug-in to a program that has a robust heap mechanism for such situations, but I have no idea whether or how OpenGL could be made to use it for application memory management. The notion that this is even possible came to my attention through this [albeit dated] thread on a similar issue under Mac OS X: http://lists.apple.com/archives/Mac-opengl/2001/Sep/msg00042.html I am using Windows XP, and have seen it on multiple NVidia cards.   Are there any good, free tools to profile memory usage in C# ? Details: I have a visualization project that uses quite large collections. I would like to check which parts of this project - on the data-processing side, or on the visualization side - use most of the memory, so I could optimize it. I know that when it comes to computing size of the collection the case is quite simple and I can do it on my own. But there are also certain elements for which I cannot estimate the memory usage so easily. The memory usage is quite big, for example processing a file of size 35 MB my program uses a little bit more than 250 MB of RAM.

Is it possible to specify some amount of memory (for example 1MB) and to run some executable file with those parameters? If process tries to allocate more than that amount of memory it should close and return some error value. Is there an easy way to do something like that on windows? Excuse my English.

  I'm having trouble figuring out a way to return an object (declared locally within the function) which has dynamic memory attached to it. The problem is the destructor, which runs and deletes the dynamic memory when the object goes out of scope, i.e. when I return it and want to use the data in the memory that has been deleted! I'm doing this for an overloaded addition operator. I'm trying to do something like: MyObj operator+( const MyObj& x, const MyObj& y ) { MyObj z; // code to add x and y and store in dynamic memory of z return z; } My destructor is simply: MyObj::~MyObj() { delete [] ptr; } Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

• Strange Puzzle - Invalid memory access of location

  The error message I'm getting consistently is: Invalid memory access of location 0x8 rip=0x10cf4ab28 What I'm doing is making a basic stock backtesting system, that is iterating huge arrays of stocks/historical data across various algorithms, using java + eclipse on the latest Mac Os X. I tracked down the code that seems to be causing it. A method that is used to get the massive arrays of data and is called thousands of times. Nothing is retained so I don't think there is a memory leak. However there seems to be a set limit of around 7000 times I can iterate over it before I get the memory error. The weird thing is that it works perfectly in debug mode. Does anyone know what debug mode does differently in Eclipse? Giving the jvm more memory doesn't help, and it appears to work fine using -xint. • Memory is leaked only in some machines.

  We've got a situation where our application is leaking memory while doing some periodic action. The test scenario is composed of a series of processes across two relatively complex WPF windows. The weird thing about the situation is that memory only gets leaked on SOME machines, while others, having exactly the same hardware, can be working for really long times (repeating the process every minute) having their memory almost unchanged (once the GC gets rid of used memory, etc). This is .NET + WPF. Any ideas about where to start looking? What can cause leaks in only some machines? (we're talking about a 30 machine test scenario). I have few experience with WPF, could the graphic card had anything to do with it?

• Kubuntu 12.04 - Touchpad and keyboard stopped working at random

  As in the title, I've got this problem with my Kubuntu 12.04. At first I've thought that the whole system was hung, but it happened again 5 minutes ago and, while the keyboard and the touchpad stopped working, the music was still playing, so I guess that's just an "input" problem, because the system was still working! Any solution? Is there some data that you need to know about my setup? • FxCop CA2227 warning and ReadOnlyCollection<T>

  In my VS2008 SP1, .NET 3.5 SP1 project, I have different classes that contain different properties. I use C#3.0 auto properties a lot. Some of these properties need to be collections. Since I want to make it simple, I use ReadOnlyCollection<T for these properties. I don't want to use IEnumerable<T since I want random access to the elements. I use Code Analysis (FxCop rules) and I get the CA2227 warning. I don't understand why does ReadOnlyCollection<T should have a set method while it can't be changed... The set method can only do exactly what the property can do. Example: using System.Collections.ObjectModel; namespace CA2227 { public class MyClass { public ReadOnlyCollection<int> SomeNumbers { get; set; } } } CA2227 : Microsoft.Usage : Change 'MyClass.SomeNumbers' to be read-only by removing the property setter. • CS1685 Warning causes a CS0433 error when targeting 3.5 in VS2010

  I have a 2010 project that is targeting .NET v3.5. It was working fine until I started to mess with configurations a bit and now I cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong. The project doesn't have ANY references added. It won't even let me add a reference to System.Core as it is added by the 'build system'. warning CS1685: The predefined type 'System.Func' is defined in multiple assemblies in the global alias; using definition from 'c:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\mscorlib.dll' IFilter.cs(82,49): error CS0433: The type 'System.Func' exists in both 'c:\Program Files (x86)\Reference Assemblies\Microsoft\Framework\v3.5\System.Core.dll' and 'c:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\mscorlib.dll' Looks like something is grabbing onto 4.0 but I'm not quite sure how to fix it.   We need to insert a web beacon (i know taboo) in to adobe PDFs to know when they are opened, as one of our clients is moving to a model of "giving" their documents away and following up repeat viewers for subscriptions. Its not enough to be able to provide a download, they want to attach the PDF to an email and "blast" to directed recipients (double-opt-in etc). Adding the javascript to the pdf is easy enough: (iText) and the "openAction" event. However the security box pops up and displays: "Security Warning" "Document is trying to connect to 'xxxx.yyy.com' if you trusty the site choose Allow. If do not trust the site choose Block" [help] [allow] [block] I don't think we need to completley overhaul the dialogue box, I just think we need to change the middle text to be more descriptive of why we are doing it.   I have recently moved my solution from my main dev machine using vs2010 pro sp1 to a new machine. The setup is supposed to be the same except its failing to build. Its giving errors like c:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\Microsoft.Common.targets(1360,9): warning MSB3258: The primary reference "C:\rep\hms\trunk\ikassystemv3\ikasDAL\bin\Debug\ikasDAL.dll" could not be resolved because it has an indirect dependency on the .NET Framework assembly "mscorlib, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089" which has a higher version "4.0.0.0" than the version "2.0.0.0" in the current target framework. However all all the libraries in question are set to use the .net 2 framework and I need it this way or else it will break stuff that uses them. However for some reason it seems to think that somehow my .net 2 system libs are somehow referencing .net 4 stuff.   I am using jQuery's ajax method to acquire a static JSON file. The data is loaded from the local file system, hence there is no server, so I can't change the mime type. This works fin in Safari, but Firefox (3.6.3) reports the file to be "not well-formed". • Eclipse standard warning/error overlay icons

  I'm writing an Eclipse plug-in... In my custom label decorator, I want to overlay a warning icon, and I'd like to use the standard one used by eclipse (the little yellow triangle). How can I get an image descriptor of this icon? I tried using workbench.getSharedImages().getImageDescriptor(ISharedImages .IMG_DEC_FIELD_WARNING), since that ID seems to match what I'm looking for, but the shared images collection doesn't actually have that image in it (so I just get a null returned). Is there some other shared image collection that I should be looking at?

  In PostgreSQL 8.4.3, I get this error when logging on to one of my databases (adus): WARNING: invalid value for parameter "default_text_search_config": "tsc_markets" which makes sense since executing the command \dF does not list any such configuration (and only lists the defaults). However, when I ask psql to show me the current value: adus=# show default_text_search_config; I get default_text_search_config ---------------------------- pg_catalog.english (1 row) In addition, the postgresql.config file has the entry: # default configuration for text search default_text_search_config = 'pg_catalog.english' plus, there is only one (user) defined schema that I use (also called adus) in this database. What's going on?

• warning C6242: A jump out of this try-block forces local unwind

  When we use SEH with __finally block, if we do return in __try block, it causes a local unwind. To Local unwind, the system need to approximately 1000 instructions. The local unwind causes a warning C6242. MSDN suggests using __leave keyword(with saving a return value). But I don't think it's a good idea. If we save a return value and leave the block, there will be many mistakes. Is the waring really necessary? What do you prefer?

• FxCop CA2000 Warning in UserControls

  Running FxCop on a WebProject that contains a UserControl will result in a CA2000 Warning (Call System.IDisposable.Dispose on object) for every ServerControl (Label, TextBox,...) in that UserControl. I understand why this would happen. Replacing the 'offending' ServerControls with a PlaceHolder and then adding the Controls in code (Using...End Using) might be a way around that, but it is not always an option.But, if they are not 'kosher' why have ServerControls you can drop in your ascx/aspx in the first place ?Am I missing something ? If, like in my case, you inherit a sizeable collection of fairly complex UserControls, do I now add every 'offending' Control to the GlobalSupperssions file (that's a lot of mind numbing right-clicking) ?I do not want to suppress all CA2000 warnings since it makes perfect sense to fix them, but not in the case of ServerControls in UserControls.

• Thoughts on Static Code Analysis Warning CA1806 for TryParse calls

  I was wondering what people's thoughts were on the CA1806 (DoNotIgnoreMethodResults) Static Code Analysis warning when using FxCop. I have several cases where I use Int32.TryParse to pull in internal configuration information that was saved in a file. I end up with a lot of code that looks like: Int32.TryParse(someString, NumberStyles.Integer, CultureInfo.InvariantCulture, out intResult); MSDN says the default result of intResult is zero if something fails, which is exactly what I want. Unfortunately, this code will trigger CA1806 when performing static code analysis. It seems like a lot of redundant/useless code to fix the errors with something like the following: bool success = Int32.TryParse(someString, NumberStyles.Integer, CultureInfo.InvariantCulture, out intResult); if (!success) { intResult= 0; } Should I suppress this message or bite the bullet and add all this redundant error checking? Or maybe someone has a better idea for handling a case like this? Thanks!

• ie6 p3p 'file download security warning'

  i have a page inside iframe, so i set the header to "P3P","CP=\"IDC DSP COR ADM DEVi TAIi PSA PSD IVAi IVDi CONi HIS OUR IND CNT\"" after that my page inside iframe able to load properly and i able to authenticate user with 'form' post . but on ie6, when i post 'form' inside iframe, i get ie6 message 'file download security warning on javascript file' . those javascript files are put on 'head' of pages inside iframe. how comes ie6 suddenly pop up dialog asking to download those files? anyone know which p3p parameter cause this problem?

• Haxe app and Gtk-WARNING on linux servers

  Hi! I'm trying a Haxe-compiled solution called FAR (Flash Archiver) created by Edwin Van Rijkom (http://code.google.com/p/vanrijkom-flashlibs/) wich uses a command-line tool for creating compressed archives. When running the FAR tool locally on my ubuntu laptop, everything works fine. When running remotely (terminal as Root) on my Ubuntu and Debian servers, it gives the following error: Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: I've tried to reach Edvin about this, but no response so far. Maybe it has something to do with installation or user rights on the server? Any clue?
