  • How to check if the sum of some records equals the difference between two other records in t-sql?

    I have a view that contains bank account activity. ACCOUNT BALANCE_ROW AMOUNT SORT_ORDER 111 1 0.00 1 111 0 10.00 2 111 0 -2.50 3 111 1 7.50 4 222 1 100.00 5 222 0 25.00 6 222 1 125.00 7 ACCOUNT = account number BALANCE_ROW = either starting or ending balance would be 1, otherwise 0 AMOUNT = the amount SORT_ORDER = simple order to return the records in the order of start balance, activity, and end balance I need to figure out a way to see if the sum of the non balance_row rows equal the difference between the ending balance and the starting balance. The result for each account (1 for yes, 0 for no) would be simply added to the resulting result set. Example: Account 111 had a starting balance of 0.00. There were two account activity records of 10.00 and -2.5. That resulted in the ending balance of 7.50. I've been playing around with temp tables, but I was not sure if there is a more efficient way of accomplishing this. Thanks for any input you may have!

    Hi, Thanks to help from a lot of you guys ive been given the following code which works great. However ive realised ive missed an important bit of info out of the question and so have reposted here (with updated code) to clarify. The following code gets 5 random records from a table plus a further single record based on the users favourite as identified in a second table: CREATE PROCEDURE web.getRandomCharities ( @tmp_ID bigint --members ID ) AS BEGIN WITH q AS ( SELECT TOP 5 * FROM TBL_CHARITIES WHERE cha_Active = 'TRUE' AND cha_Key != '1' ORDER BY NEWID() ) SELECT * FROM q UNION ALL SELECT TOP 1 * FROM ( SELECT * FROM TBL_CHARITIES WHERE TBL_CHARITIES.cha_Key IN ( SELECT members_Favourite FROM TBL_MEMBERS WHERE members_Id = @tmp_ID ) EXCEPT SELECT * FROM q ) tc END However, i realised i also need to include the record where "cha_Key == '1'" if it isnt the same as the record returned in the second SELECT statement in the code shown above.   • VSS causing crash in VS 2008

    We use Visual Studio 2008, with visual source safe v8. Lately, I seem to be getting a lot more crashes than usual, mainly when viewing history (comparing, etc.).   • VS2005: two projects doing identical tasks but with different result

    In VS2005 I have multi-project solution. Two of the projects use an external set of DLLs to create a report, using report definition data taken from an SQL Server. One of the projects creates the report just fine, but the other project results in an Exception. I have checked that the projects are referencing the same versions of the all the DLLs and they appear to be identical. What could the cause of this problem?

    I'm aware that sysadmin is documented as the server role necessary for creating logins (SQL/Windows-integrated); nevertheless, I'm tasked to find out if there's any other server role (built-in or otherwise) that can be used. To be specific, I'm looking to setup one or two logins with access to create logins, create [database] users, assign users to [database] roles. Potentially reset passwords, but most of the logins are Windows-integrated and it's not necessary. Cannot have access to data at all, nor can these logins have rights to update tables nor create/update roles. Seems my only options so far are to set these 2 logins with securityadmin server role and for the specific databases, configure with db_securityadmin and db_accessadmin... but this configuration doesn't allow for creating logins.

  • Optimising a query for Top 5% of users

    On my website, there exists a group of 'power users' who are fantastic and adding lots of content on to my site. However, their prolific activities has led to their profile pages slowing down a lot. For 95% of the other users, the SPROC that is returning the data is very quick. It's only for these group of power users, the very same SPROC is slow. How does one go about optimising the query for this group of users? You can assume that the right indexes have already been constructed. EDIT: Ok, I think I have been a bit too vague. To rephrase the question, how can I optimise my site to enhance the performance for these 5% of users. Given that this SPROC is the same one that is in use for every user and that it is already well optimised, I am guessing the next steps are to explore caching possibilities on the data and application layers?

The client makes us of MOM (Microsoft operations Manager) to monitor the system. What are the best counters to use for monitoring the overall health of the system? Are there any built in counters that we could add into a MOM Pack (as an Alert) to test a given scenario? Any thoughts suggestions would be much apreciated. Thanks
