  • Host's sys admins - can they view files?

    Hi, Just a quick question. When using shared hosting, can system admins (employed by the host) access your files and read your database connectionstring details? Can they also access your database, and view the files, without a connectionstring? I'm assuming there's a certain level of trust, but is this possible/common? Thanks

  • Change Logon DPI setting in Windows 8.1

    I love how M$ keeps making decisions for me about how I want my desktop to look. Now they have added per-user dpi settings. The problem this has created is that there is no adjustable dpi setting for the Lock/Logon screen. Let me explain. you can change the dpi setting to be the same across all displays and this does affect the icons and font on the lock/logon screen. However it does not affect any app/program that can run on the lock/logon screen. Ex. I use a 44" flat screen tv for my monitor on my desktop. Big enough for me to sit in my recliner and use my comp. But I don't have a wireless keyboard. And it sucks having the wire from the keyboard running across the floor. Plus I really don't want to keep a keyboard next to me. So I use the on screen keyboard for logging in and quick typing (search, web address, etc.) So the problem is that with the new dpi setup my on screen keyboard takes up nearly half the screen. Does M$ think we are all blind? Oh no I remember they think desktops should look like tablets and phones. I tried looking through the registry to see if I could find a setting for it. In the key HKEY_USERS.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop there is a string value named "LogicalDPIOverride" with a value of -1. I have a feeling this is where I can fix the issue. I tried changing the value to 0 and to 1 with no change in the result. Instead I noticed that after logging out and back in the -1 value was back in the registry. So now M$ has also added a way for us to not be able to change a setting in the registry. They are making it harder and harder for us power users to be able to do anything with the settings in windows. Soon we will all have the same exact Windows with absolutely no customization. ok sorry for the quick rant. The real question here is. How can I change this defualt dpi crap? Can I use the LogPixels string that worked for dpi in Windows 7?   • Linux - What do the common root folder names mean?

    I am rather new to linux, but I have installed a few different flavors. I noticed they all have similar folder names in the root directory bin boot dev etc home lib lost+found media mnt opt proc root sbin selinux srv sys tmp usr var I googled around, but couldn't find anywhere that explained the purpose of each of these. I understand a couple, but could anyone point me somewhere or give a quick breakdown of the common ones.

    Working on Vista & Window 7, I use Winamp 5.57 for listening to mp3 and VLC player for watching movies. I made those two as my default players for corresponding media respectively. But when I launch winamp for playing mp3, some of the video files( like .flv, etc.,) automatically get changed the file opening mode to winamp player. This happens every time even if I set it back to 'default program'. Can someone please help me out.

    I'd like to be able to launch either the AD user dialog, or the EMC mailbox dialog directly from a Powershell script to open a specific user. The workflow goes something to the effect of "Does everything look correct on this user? Y/N" to continuing on, or to bringing up the account to edit. There's no reason to completely duplicate the functionality of these dialogs. I don't mind requiring that EMC or ADU&C already be open before the script is run, if necessary.

How do I configure the web interface to default to the external IP address of the box instead of its internal LAN IP?

    So i have a Z68 chipset that allows Quick Sync encoding on my i7 processor. I want a media encoder that supports both Hardware encoding and allows me to "merge files". My problem is Fraps breaks my recording into 4GB files. I need to stitch these files together & re-encode for Youtube ect, but i want to use the hardware encoding I paid for. I have not figured out how to do this on Handbrake or MediaEsspresso.

    I have a mac installer which runs as root with pre and post install bash scripts. At the end of the post install script I launch the application which inherits and opens as root. Is there a way I can lower the permissions back down to the user that ran the installer and then open the app? Or a more hackish way I can set the app to open in some scheduler from the script, which then gets opened by the scheduler which would have the users permissions

    Pre-Snow Leopard, I could use the following command: defaults write com.apple.loginwindow Finder /Applications/My-replacement-app-such-as-Terminal.app Which would a.) replace the Finder launching at login with an application of my choice, and b.) cause that application to launch instead of Finder when all other applications are quit. Is it possible to do this in Snow Leopard, or has this behavior been deprecated? (I don't want to disable Finder altogether, I just don't want it to start at login.)

    Can I run 64-bit VM guests on a 32-bit host? If I have a physical PC with 32 bit can I launch a VM that is 64 bit? What virtual machine software (Virtual PC or VirtualBox or other) would allow this? I read out there that VMware may support this but I am looking for something Open source or free. In running a Windows 8 - 64 bits machine, with Apache 2.0.64 32 bits Python 2.7.8 32 bits mod_wsgi 3.5 32 bits I looked around the web, but all the problem but everywhere says that it's a problem with the architecture of the software, but I already installed them all with the 32 bits version.
