  • Silverlight 4.0 question - synchronous calls to asmx web service

    Hi, I have Silverlight problem. I have to deal with fairly large legacy application that has some web services exposed (regular asmx, not wcf). What I need to do is to build Silverlight app that consumes those web services. Due to business logic I need to have the same web method to be called from Silverlight app synchronously. I was able to build web services consumption but only asynchronously because that would be default Silverlight behavior. Is there a way to make asynchronous calls synchronous in Silverlight? I looked here and googled around but came across only wcf examples. I would appreciate if somebody would get me a code example for regular asmx web service. I use Silverlight 4.0. Thanks!

  • A strong case for WF

    Hi guys, I have struggled for so long to find a compelling use case for workflow (ie: WF) as against regular imperative programming. Each time I fall back to the conclusion that I should just leave WF out or defer getting into it until later. But I keep having this nagging feeling that there's something am missing. Does anyone know any book that truly makes a strong case for the Workflow way? The book has to (i) teach WF well, and (ii) show using appropriate use cases that WF made an implementation easy to do than if we just did our regular straight coding. I will appreciate it.

  • asp.net mvc: handling no-javascript

    Hello, I'm working on a asp.net mvc2 app. I have been using jquery to do various different things in all of my views. They are work from a regular browser quite well. But I'm trying to figure out a good way to get the functionality working with browsers with javascript disabled (like mobile browsers). Is there a way to define a whole different view for non javascript browsers? A specific example of what I'm trying to do is, I have a with it's onClick calling a javascript that does $.post() to a controller. What's a good way to make it, so, it works the way it works right now (doing ajax calls) with regular javascript-enabled browsers and it a also works with javascript-incapable browsers, doing a full postback ? Thanks

  • trouble with utf-8 chars & apache2 rewrite rules

    I see the post http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2565864/validating-utf-8-in-htaccess-rewrite-rule and I think that is great, but a more fundamental problem I am having first: I needed to expand to handle utf-8 chars for query string parameters, names of directories, files, and used in displays to users etc. I configured my Apache with DefaultCharset utf-8 and also my php if that matters. My original rewrite rule filtered everything except regular A-Za-z and underscore and hyphen. and it worked. Anything else would give you a 404 (which is what I want!) Now, however it seems that everything matches, including stuff I don't want, however, although it seems to match it doesn't go in the query string unless it is a regular A-Za-z_- character string. I find this confusing, because the rule says put whatever you matched into the query string: Here is the original rule: RewriteRule ^/puzzle/([A-Za-z_-]+)$ /puzzle.php?g=$1 [NC] and here is the revised rule: RewriteRule ^/puzzle/(\w+)$ /puzzle.php?g=$1 [NC] I made the change because somewhere I read that \w matches ALL the alpha chars where as A-Zetc. only matches the ones without accents and stuff. It doesn't seem to matter which of those rules I use: Here is what happens: In the application I have this: echo $_GET['g']; If I feed it a url like http://mydomain.com/puzzle/USA it echoes out "USA" and works fine. If I feed it a url like http://mydomain.com/puzzle/México it echoes nothing for that and warns me that index g is not defined and of course doesn't get resources for Mexico. if I feed it a url like http://mydomain.com/puzzle/fuzzle/buzzle/j.qle it does the same thing. This last case should be a 404! And it does this no matter which of the above rules I use. I configured a rewrite log RewriteLogLevel 5 RewriteLog /opt/local/apache2/logs/puzzles.httpd.rewrite but it is empty. Here is from the regular access log (it gives a status of 200) [26/May/2010:11:21:42 -0700] "GET /puzzle/M%C3%A9xico HTTP/1.1" 200 342 [26/May/2010:11:21:54 -0700] "GET /puzzle/M/l.foo HTTP/1.1" 200 342 What can I do to get these $%#$@(*#@!!! characters but not slash, dot or other non-alpha into my program, and once there, will it decode them correctly??? Would posix char classes work any better? Is there anything else I need to configure?

    Can you help me make sense of all the different ways to communicate from browser to client in ASP.NET? I have made this a community wiki so feel free to edit my post to improve it. Specifically, I'm trying to understand in which scenario to use each one by listing how each works. I'm a little fuzzy on UpdatePanel vs CallBack (with ViewState): I know UpdatePanel always returns HTML while CallBack can return JSON. Any other major differences? ...and CallBack (without ViewState) vs WebMethod. CallBack goes through most of the Page lifecycle, WebMethod doesn't. Any other major differences?     I need the Perl regex to parse plain text input and convert all links to valid HTML HREF links. I've tried 10 different versions I found on the web but none of them seen to work correctly. I also tested other solutions posted on StackOverflow, none of which seem to work. The correct solution should be able to find any URL in the plain text input and convert it to: <a href="$1">$1</a> Some cases other regular expressions I tried didn't handle correctly include: URLs at the end of a line which are followed by returns URLs that included question marks URLs that start with 'https' I'm hoping that another Perl guy out there will already have a regular expression they are using for this that they can share.     I'm currently trying to use an LDAP server to authenticate users who are trying to access our Tomcat setup. I believe I have managed to get the LDAP authentication working in the form of a JNDI realm call from Tomcat, but immediately after the user enters their password Tomcat starts throwing 403 (permission denied) errors for everything except from the root page (ttp://localhost:1337/). I have no idea why this is happening.     Hey, I'm trying to split my rails project in a front-end for regular users and a back-end for admins. Therefore i have created a namespace 'admin' so that i can easily control admin specific controller methods/layouts/authentication in the map admin. I'm using Devise to register/authenticate my admins only. Because it is only used for admins only i'm trying to move Devise to the admin namespace. I could not find exactly what i was looking for in the documentation of Devise but i tried something like this in routes.rb: namespace 'admin'do devise_for :admins end I also tried to make a custom Devise::Sessions controller but that too didn't seem to work out. Does anyone know how to do this? Should i just use the regular routes for devise with a custom(admin) layout?

  • Detecting first time login of user into application (Google Appengine)

    My app requires users to login using their google account. I have this set in my App.yamp file: url: /user/.* script: user.py login: required Now when any user tries to access files under /user/secret.py he will need to authenticate via google, which will redirect the user back to /user/secret.py after successful authentication. Now the problem I am facing is when the user is redirected back to the app, I cannot be sure if this is the first time the user has logged in or is it a regular user to my site who has come back again from just the user object which google passes using users.get_current_user() . I thus need to maintain state in the datastore to check if the user already exists or not everytime. If he does not exist i need to create a new entry with other application specific settings. My question is: Is there some easier way to handle this? without having to query the datastore to figure if this is a first time user or a regular one?

  • Best way to show code snippets in word?

    Does anyone know a good way to display code in Microsoft Word documents? I have tried to include code as regular text which looks awful and gets in the way when editing regular text. I have also tried inserting objects, a WordPad document and Text Box, into the document then putting the code inside those objects. The code looks much better and is easier to avoid while editing the rest of the text. However, these objects can only span one page which makes editing a nightmare when several pages of code need to be added. Lastly, I know that there are much better editors/formats that have no problem handling this but I am stuck working with MS word.

    Hi stackers! I'm reading email from a maildir and some emails have weird sets of characters in them: =3D =09 I think =3D is = and =09 is a space. There are some others, but I'm not sure: =E2 =80 =93 Does anyone know what these are and what encoding issues I'm dealing with here? BTW, I tried fetching these email via POP3 and it's the same thing. The reason I'm posting this on SO is not because I'm using a regular mail client to read the data. I'm reading via PHP out of maildir files. Perhaps a regular email client would detect what encoding this is and deal with it. Thanks!

    I am using .NET and am creating a desktop app/service that will display notifications in the corner of my Desktop when certain events are triggered. I don't want to use a regular Message Box b/c that would be too intrusive. I want notifications to slide into view and then fade out after a few seconds. I am thinking of something that will act very much like the Outlook alerts that one gets when a new message arrives. The question is: Should I use WPF for this? I've never done anything with WPF but will happily try it if that's best means to the end. Is there a way to accomplish this with regular .NET libraries?

  • How to regex match a string of alnums and hyphens, but which doesn't begin or end with a hyphen?

    I have some code validating a string of 1 to 32 characters, which may contain only alpha-numerics and hyphens ('-') but may not begin or end with a hyphen. I'm using PCRE regular expressions & PHP (albeit the PHP part is not really important in this case). Right now the pseudo-code looks like this: if (match("/^[\p{L}0-9][\p{L}0-9-]{0,31}$/u", string) and not match("/-$/", string)) print "success!" That is, I'm checking first that the string is of right contents, doesn't being with a '-' and is of the right length, and then I'm running another test to see that it doesn't end with a '-'. Any suggestions on merging this into a single PCRE regular expression? I've tried using look-ahead / look-behind assertions but couldn't get it to work.
