  • SteelSeries & JavaFX External Control via Tinkerforge

    - by Geertjan
The first photo shows me controling a JavaFX chart by rotating a Tinkerforge device, while the other two are of me using code by Christian Pohl from Nordhorn, Germany, to show components from Gerrit Grunwald's SteelSeries library being externally controled by Tinkerforge devices: What these examples show is that you can have a robot (i.e., an external device), of some kind, that can produce output that can be visualized via JavaFX charts and SteelSeries components. For example, imagine a robot that moves around while collecting data on the current temperature throughout a building. That's possible because a temperature device is part of Tinkerforge, just like the rotating device and distance device shown in the photos above. The temperature data collected by the robot would be displayed in various ways on a computer via, for example, JavaFX charts and SteelSeries components. From there, reports could be produced and adjustments could be made to the robot while it continues moving around collecting temperature data. The fact that Tinkerforge has Wifi support makes a scenario such as described here completely possible to implement. And all of this can be programmed in Java, without very much work, since the Java bindings for Tinkerforge are simple to use, such as shown in yesterday's blog entry.

  • How To Change Window Transparency in Windows 7 with a Hotkey

    - by YatriTrivedi
Linux has a lot of eye-candy because of Compiz, my favorite of which is the window opacity plugin. Using a short AutoHotKey script, you can add that same functionality to Windows 7. I used this AHK script as a basis for changing opacity. It uses a single hotkey to change the active window’s transparency by 25% each time until it resets to 0. I wanted functionality similar to Compiz, so I modified the script to use the mouse wheel and shortened the increments to get more variety. Just hold down the Windows key and scroll down to see through the window. This decreases opacity and makes windows more transparent. • Read On Phone Pushes Data from Your Desktop to the Appropriate Android App

    - by ETC
Read On Phone is a free Android application that intelligently pushes data to your phone from your bowser. Rather than simply opening the URL on your phone, it opens the appropriate application for the task and formats text. Most send-to-phone type tools simply take the URL of the web page you’re looking at on your computer and shuttle it to your phone. Read On Phone is a more active and effective tool. When you send a page that is text, it formats the text for easy reading on your phone. When you send a YouTube video, map, or telephone number, it opens up the appropriate tool on your phone such as your YouTube viewer, Google Maps, or your phone dialer. In addition to that handy functionality Read On Phone also includes adjustments for day and night reading, font size, auto-scrolling, and pagination. • How do create an encrypted system with multiple Linux distributions?

    - by niels
A few weeks ago I created a completely encrypted system on a notebook and must say I like the idea. It's a little bit annoying to enter the password on every boot, but it's nice to know even if I loose the computer I don't give my data to other people. With the alternate-cd it's easy to do. Now I have to setup a new system where I want to combine the new idea with my usual usage strategy. There I have more partitions: 3 system, Home, Different Data-Partitions for vm-data, photo-data and mp3-data. The background is that I prefer not to update a system. I prefer to install the new version parallel to the old system. So I can easily test it. Obviously the Data-Partitions are used for both systems. My questions is, how can I easily combine both my strategy and the crypto-approach? Or is it impossible. The way to do the crypted stuff by hand is in my eyes to complicated.

  • Troubleshooting Your Network with Oracle Linux

    - by rickramsey
Are you afraid of network problems? I was. Whenever somebody said "it's probably the network," I went to lunch. And hoped that it was fixed by the time I got back. Turns out it wasn't that hard to do a little basic troubleshooting Tech Article: Troubleshooting Your Network with Oracle Linux by Robert Chase You're no doubt already familiar with ping. Even I knew how to use ping. Turns out there's another command that can show you not just whether a system can respond over the network, but the path the packets to that system take. Our blogging platform won't allow me to write the name down, but I can tell you that if you replace the x in this word with an e, you'll have the right command: tracxroute Once you get used to those, you can venture into the realms of mtr, nmap, and netcap. Robert Chase explains how each one can help you troubleshoot the network, and provides examples for how to use them. Robert is not only a solid writer, he is also a brilliant motorcyclist and rides an MV Augusta F4 750. • Activate Your Monitor via Motion Trigger

    - by ETC
Most people are in the habit of jiggling their mouse or tapping their keyboard when they want to wake their monitor. This clever electronics hack adds a sensor to your computer for motion-based monitor activation. At the DIY and electronics blog Radio Etcetera they tackled an interesting project and shared the build guide. Their local volunteer fire department needed a monitor on for quick information checks but they didn’t need it on all the time and they didn’t want to have to walk over and activate the monitor when they needed it. The solution involved hacking a simple infrared security sensor and wiring it via USB to send a mouse command when motion is detected in the room. Fire fighter walks in, monitor turns on and displays information; fire fighter leaves and the monitor goes back to sleep. Hit up the link below to see additional photos, schematics, and the complete build guide. • What does your Lisp workflow look like?

    - by Duncan Bayne
I'm learning Lisp at the moment, coming from a language progression that is Locomotive BASIC - Z80 Assembler - Pascal - C - Perl - C# - Ruby. My approach is to simultaneously: write a simple web-scraper using SBCL, QuickLisp, closure-html, and drakma watch the SICP lectures I think this is working well; I'm developing good 'Lisp goggles', in that I can now read Lisp reasonably easily. I'm also getting a feel for how the Lisp ecosystem works, e.g. Quicklisp for dependencies. What I'm really missing, though, is a sense of how a seasoned Lisper actually works. When I'm coding for .NET, I have Visual Studio set up with ReSharper and VisualSVN. I write tests, I implement, I refactor, I commit. Then when I'm done enough of that to complete a story, I write some AUATs. Then I kick off a Release build on TeamCity to push the new functionality out to the customer for testing & hopefully approval. If it's an app that needs an installer, I use either WiX or InnoSetup, obviously building the installer through the CI system. So, my question is: as an experienced Lisper, what does your workflow look like? Do you work mostly in the REPL, or in the editor? How do you do unit tests? Continuous integration? Packaging & deployment? When you sit down at your desk, steaming mug of coffee to one side and a framed photo of John McCarthy to the other, what is it that you do? Currently, I feel like I am getting to grips with Lisp coding, but not Lisp development ...

  • DropSpace Syncs Android Files to Dropbox

    - by ETC
DropSpace is a free Android application that fixes the primary issue that plagues the official Dropbox app for Android–the lack of true file synchronization. Grab a copy of DropSpace and start enjoying true file syncing on the go. The official Dropbox app is limited to grabbing files from your Dropbox account or pushing files from your phone to your Dropbox account. Actual file synchronization, this manual push/pull model aside, is nowhere to be found. DropSpace fills that gap by enabling file synchronization between your SD card directories and your Dropbox directories. It’s packed with handy features including restricting file syncing to Wi-Fi connection only (great if you don’t want to chew up your very limited data plan) as well as numerous toggles for various settings like whether it should delete remote files if the local file is deleted, how often it should run the sync service, and more. Hit up the link below to grab a copy and take it for a test drive. DropSpace is free and works wherever Android does; Dropbox account required.
