• Windows 7 does not recognise second display output [closed]

  I've got a PC with dual BenQ G2222HDL monitors and an ATI Radeon HD 4650 video card. I've been running both monitors at 1920x1080 for some months now but last week the second monitor switched to a lower resolution and won't let me go back to 1920x1080. If I right click the Desktop and choose Screen Resolution from the menu, I get two items in the Display: drop down list BenQ G2222HDL D-SUB Display device on: VGA In the past 2 was always the same as 1. If I click Detect a third item appears Available display output on: ATI Radeon HD 4650 but if I use the Multiple displays: drop down list to use it says "No display detected" and then lets me choose from either "Connect anyway on S-Video" or "Connect anyway on Component", neither of which help. It seems like Windows 7 recognises the card is dual-head, and knows I have got two monitors, but can't link it all together. I have checked and all my drivers are up-to-date. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get the second monitor working properly again?

• How to watch 3D on Acer "3D Ready" projector?

  We have here a Acer P1200 DLP projector which is "3D Ready" (using the BrilliantColor™ DarkChip™ 3) and documentation was not included in the packaging. We don't have a Blu-ray player and have no intention of purchasing one in the near future so I'm looking for a way to view encoded or streamed content. My question is: How is it possible to watch 3D content? What extra hardware/software will I need? EDIT: Found this information in the user manual: DLP 3D function: Choose while using DLP 3D glasses, quad buffer (NVIDIA/ATI…) graphic card and HQFS format file or DVD with corresponding SW player. 3D Sync L/R: If you see a discrete or overlapping image while wearing DLP 3D glasses, you may need to execute "Invert" to get best match of left/ right image sequence to get the correct image (for DLP 3D). ...but I'm still at a loss. What is a quad buffer graphics card?

• Bridge virtual machines out WLAN interface

  It seems that my wlan card (intel 5100 AGN) firmware doesn't allow "spoofing" MAC addresses. This has the side effect of destroying the capability to bridge out my virtual machines on that interface. Apparently this is a common thing on wlan cards. I can see the incoming traffic just fine in my virtual machines, but their DHCP queries don't get bridged out of the WLAN card. It works perfectly well when using the wired ethernet port. Is there a workaround for this? MAC-NAT or something? I don't want to route my virtual machines out to the Internet because I don't want my host OS to even have an IP address. I'm using Linux and KVM for virtualization.

• Dell D620 Windows 7 Blank screen

  When I installed Windows 7 on my Dell D620 it was all fine until a couple of days later most times when I either shut down or suspend (by closing the lid). When I unsuspend or startup the computer, there is often a completely blank screen (can't see post screen or anything), and restarting doesn't help. I've found that I can eventually bring it back up again by suspending and unsuspending a few times, but obviously this is not ideal. Has anyone else experienced this? I think it is a driver issue, that somehow the driver is putting the video card into a certain mode that it forgets how to get it back out of. Any ideas on a better solution than my switching off and on business? Edit: Turns out that the video card had burned out! IT managed to get me a new mainboard sorted for me.

• Slow internet using Arch Linux

  after a week or so of using Arch Linux I cant access the internet - it takes around 5 mins to load google (most of the other websites just give me a timeout), pacman's downloading speed range between 5-2Kbs, and pinging google takes around 9Kms. I'm connected using wireless network (wifi card is Intel Ultimate 6300 and router is Edimax 6524n). Every other Windows machine that's connected to the network (and even the T410 running Windows) is fine, so the problem lies in Linux. So far, i checked the resolv.conf file (my router ip address is listed), and the hosts file (pretty much default), and I disabled the ipv6 module. None of that helped. PS: i'm using NetworkManager (but the problem still occurs when connecting using wicd) running on Gnome3. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide! EDIT: something really strange happens whenever I ping google: i get an unknown host 'google.com', but the bit rate from the card jumps at the exact second I ping google (so far, the bit rate jumped to 54Mb/s from 1Mb/s over the course of 4 pings).

• Intermittent connection issues with atheros ar9285

  I have an asus K50IJ which has an atheros ar9285 wifi chip. It has decided to start to randomly drop internet. Although the card doesn't seem to notice it has. It will show full signal instead of say 3 bars. I tried to look at the atheros site for the latest driver but they don't even offer driver downloads. I then checked the asus site and it doesn't even list that card in the downloads for this laptop. I run Windows 7 64bit. It will drop either every minute or once a day while I am doing intensive bandwidth usage and when I am just idling.

• Ubuntu issues when moving hard disk to new system

  I'm working on a legacy project with a small single board computer running Ubuntu 10.04 on a compact flash card. I need to be able to save away a working image (via dd) and copy said image to other compact flash cards for use in other single board computers (with identical hardware) I'm able to copy the image to other flash cards and bootup on other systems no problem. But I'm seeing strange behavior. For instance, I can't use sudo on the new system (“sudo: must be setuid root”). I've gone down the path of trying to fix this, but have run into a slew of other issues. General question is: what do I need to be aware of when moving a hard disk containing Ubuntu (in my case a compact flash card) to another computer? I was hoping it would be seamless to Ubuntu since it's moving to a system with identical hardware. Is there something that needs to be done to make it "portable"?

• Resize NTFS System Partition on Perc 6/i RAID

  I've inherited a Dell server that is running out of space on C:. I'd like to quickly and painlessly resize the C drive with partitioning software. However, the RAID card is causing me some troubles. I've resized plenty of desktops in my time, but never a server with hardware RAID. Can anyone recommend software that is GUARANTEED to work with the Dell PERC 6/i? Hopefully someone has resized the system partition with this RAID card before! :) Of course, proper backups are available but I'd be more comfortable with a tried and true solution to save the headache of the restore.... • *.exe is not a valid win32 application

  Hi everybody. recently I've bought a VGA card, "ATI Radeon HD4650", and after that I installed it on my PC, i cant run any .exe files just from my CD-Rom ! even when i attempt to install the driver of VGA Card, I couldn't do that, So I downloaded it and installed it with no problems. after that when I try to install some games from DVD (more than 5 different games I have tried) it prompt me with: "setup.exe is not a valid win32 application" therefore I cant install the game, in addition I need to say that there's nothing wrong with DVD's and my DVD-Rom. I would really appreciate if you just can help me through this one !

• Why does eth0 show an IP if I'm booting into runlevel 1?

  I'm having some issues with networking on a new Linux server I'm building. The OS is SLES 11. When booting into runlevel 1, I see that eth0 is showing an IP. Physically, there is a network cable plugged into the card associated with eth1, and then there is a network cable plugged into a QLogic iSCSI card (eth4, not shown). I've been troubleshooting this for awhile, and it seems like eth0 is somehow getting assigned an IP, even though it isn't configured in Linux or even plugged into the network for that matter. • Application passwords and SQLite security

  I have been searching on google for information regarding application passwords and SQLite security for some time, and nothing that I have found has really answered my questions. Here is what I am trying to figure out: 1) My application is going to have an optional password activity that will be called when the application is first opened. My questions for this are a) If I store the password via android preference or SQLite database, how can I ensure security and privacy for the password, and b) how should password recovery be handled? Regarding b) from above, I have thought about requiring an email address when the password feature is enabled, and also a password hint question for use when requesting password recovery. Upon successfully answering the hint question, the password is then emailed to the email address that was submitted. I am not completely confident in the security and privacy of the email method, especially if the email is sent when the user is connected to an open, public wireless network. 2) My application will be using an SQLite database, which will be stored on the SD card if the user has one. Regardless of whether it is stored on the phone or the SD card, what options do I have for data encryption, and how does that affect the application performance? Thanks in advance for time taken to answer these questions. I think that there may be other developers struggling with the same concerns.

• Mother Board Question

  1st, I am software guy. I do not do hardware. So I know to you hardware geeks, this is a dumb question. I just inherited a box with a ASUS P5GZ-MX mother board. I have attempted to install two nVidia PCI video cards. I put a 750w power supply in the system to be sure I have enough power. With no extra video cards, the 3.3 v shows normal. When I put one card in, the 3.3 goes to 3.5-3.6 and flashes red (over voltage) about 30% of the time. When I put the 2nd card in, it goes to 3.73 v and stays red all the time. Any Ideas why the voltage goes up when I add cards instead of going down? More Importantly, is this dangerous to the system?

• I/O between AIR client using Native process and executable java .jar

  I am using Adobe AIR 2.0 native process API to launch a java executable jar. I/O is handled by writing to the input stream of the java process and reading from the output stream. The application is event based where several events are fired from the server. • Video acceleration problem with Windows 7 games and PPTX files

  I have a Dell xps M1330 which originally ran Vista, but I upgraded to Windows 7. When I try to run a Win 7 game like spider solitaire I receive the following message: The game is running in software rendering mode. Hardware acceleration is either disabled or not supported by your video card driver which could slow down game performance. Make sure you have the latest video card driver installed and that hardware acceleration is turned on. I confirmed that hardware acceleration is turned on. When I go to Dell's site, I'm told there is no later video driver. When I run the game it runs very choppy. I have a .pptx file which is doing strange things in normal view and I suspect it may be related to the same video acceleration problem.

• Radeon 5850 Why am I not getting 3 monitors up as a choice ??

  Ive just bought the top end ATI Radeon card with 2 normal monitor ports and a HDMI. The idea was to continue using my dual screen setup as always and to use the last plug, the HDMI on my TV. I got a new 52 inch HD TV with all the necessary bits. This should work fine. But.. in Display Properties I still get only my 2 monitors up as options. Not the Digital TV. When I unplug 1 monitor and restart the computer, I get the TV and the other monitor. But never all 3 at the same time. Why is this ? Where can I go to tell it that I need all 3 screens at the same time. Also I get a message saying my gfx card also gives sound through the HDMI cable.. But the TV tells me its recieving a sound format that it does not understand. Any ideas on that too while were at it ?

• Super-silent (mid tower) case and fan combo

  I want to build a HTPC for music/video/blu-ray playback (no gaming). I don't need an expensive HTPC case but just want to go with a standard medium tower case. However, I want it to be super silent so it doesn't make any annoying fan/disk noises when I watch movies. Ideally, it shouldn't make any noticeable noise at all. I understand that choosing a board, CPU and graphic card that run cool and don't consume a lot of power is important for designing a quiet machine, and I think I got that covered. However, there are so many choices in regards to cases, fans and power supplies that it's hard to get started. What are your recommendations for a case/fan (cpu+case)/power supply combination that run absolutely silent and can cool a standard Intel system with a low-power (possibly passively cooled) graphic card? I'm usually a fan of Antec cases, would an Antec Mini P180 be a good starting point? If so, which case fans, CPU fan and power supply would you recommend?

• Stuck in power saving mode

  I've got an LG monitor I tried attaching to my laptop for dual monitor goodness and it worked fine but when I tried attaching it back to the desktop it stuck in "Power Saving mode" and wouldn't go away. The CPU's starting up but nothing happens with the monitor. I try attaching it back to the laptop and it works fine again. I don't understand what could have happened. For reference, the laptop I'm using is an HP laptop with nVidia GT240M video card running on an i7 processor while the desktop runs on a Dual Core processor with an nVidia 9400GT video card. I've never had problems like these with other monitors I've attached my pc to. Anyone got any ideas?

• mobile broadband recommendations for Lenovo T500

  I use a Lenovo T500 primarily in and around San Francisco, although I do some travel in the US on business and occasionally to Europe/Asia. I'm looking for a good mobile broadband option for my T500. I am admittedly baffled by the various mobile-broadband choices (3G vs. 4G, WiMax vs. LTE vs. MIMO vs. ..., etc.). My priorities are (in this order): Compatible with Lenovo T500 and Windows 7. I realize only the AT&T accessory card is listed on Lenovo's site, but I've also heard that other cards will work in my T500 too, like the WiMax/Wifi combo card-- so I'm interested in what actually works, not necessarily only what Lenovo is promoting. Reliable coverage in US large cities, especially the SF Bay Area. my IPhone has lousy coverage in many spots, so I'd be nervous about an AT&T 3G option unless the problem is with the IPhone and not AT&T's network. I'm OK with non-great coverage outside major US cities, since I don't do much travel in those areas. Speed. faster is better. Internal card. I'd slightly prefer something I could install inside my T500 instead of a dongle on the side that might break off, although this is my lowest priority so it's not a big deal. Price. I don't want to pay over $100/month. I've tried lots of Googling and haven't come up with clear answers. I've seen lots of general overviews without recommendations, and lots of passionate opinions which don't feel objective (and don't help me understand compatibility with my hardware & geography). Can you recommend a good, objective guide online, ideally for Lenovo although general guide is OK too, which can help me figure out which option is the best one for me? I'd also be interested in your own personal experiences of using mobile broadband using a Lenovo T500. I'll accept the answer which gets me closest to making a decision.

• Building a new PC, Installing XP, blue screen of death

  I got a gigabyte barebones kit and am installing windows-XP(SP1) and the initial setup works, then it restarts and goes into the second phase of the setup. Then when installing components (I think that's what it says) it gets half way done and comes up with a blue screen saying IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. BUT! I had gotten past that by installing windows-XP media center addition Now I am trying to install the drivers for my Asus ATI Radeon 5770 graphics card and I get another blue screen of death that doesnt give much info something about address x0000005. Would you think there is something wrong with something in my system or do you think if I got windows 7 that would take care of things? Sorry for probably not giving enough info. • Sort on DataView does not work if DataTable has zero rows

  We have a WPF app that has a DataGrid insode a ListView. private DataTable table_; We do a bunch or dynamic column generation ( depending on the report we are showing ) We then do the a query and fill the DataTable row by row, this query may or may not have data.( not the problem, an empty grid is expected ) We set the ListView's ItemsSource to the DefaultView of the DataTable. lv.ItemsSource = table_.DefaultView; We then (looking at the user's pass usage of the app, set the sort on the column) Sort Method below: private void Sort(string sortBy, ListSortDirection direction) { var dataView = CollectionViewSource.GetDefaultView(lv.ItemsSource); dataView.SortDescriptions.Clear(); var sd = new SortDescription(sortBy, direction); dataView.SortDescriptions.Add(sd); dataView.Refresh(); } In the Zero DataTable rows scenario, the sort does not "hold"? and if we dynamically add rows they will not be in sorted order. If the DataTable has at-least 1 row when the sort is applied, and we dynamically add rows to the DataTable, the rows com in sorted correctly. I have built a standalone app that replicate this... It is an annoyance and I can add a check to see if the DataTable was empty, and re-sort... Anyone know whats going on here, and am I doing something wrong? • fsck: FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED after each check with -c, why?

  Hi I use a script to partition and format CF cards (connected with a USB card writer) in an automated way. After the main process I check the card again with fsck. To check bad blocks I also tried the '-c' switch, but I always get a return value != 0 and the message "FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED" (see below). I get the same result when checking the very same drive several times... Does anyone know why a) the file system is modified at all and b) why this seems to happen every time I check and not only in case of an error (like bad blocks)? • How do you test if a PCI slot is working - motherboard diagnostic software?

  I suspect that my motherboard is bad, and that my PCI-E slot is not working. I have a Gigabyte motherboard that had a Hauppage 2250 working fine in the PCI-E slot for many months. However - recently - would not get TV channels that I used to get --- until finally Media center cant detect any channels at all. Got a new tuner card (ATI 350 card) - cant detect any channels. The cable signal is good - I have it connected directly to a TV - all channels come in clear. SO that is why I suspect a motherboard problem. Are there any motherboard diagnostic scanner utilities that can verify I need a new motherboard

• How to Connect Firewire Camcorder to Laptop without firewire port

  I Have a Sony Camcorder w/ a 4-pin firewire output. I have HP laptop I want to use it with, but the laptop, does not have a firewire port, just VGA, HDMI, USB, ESATA, Ethernet, and Modem. In addition, It doesn't have a PC Card slot for adding a Firewire card. Googling for "Firewire to USB adapter" returns a lot of hits, but no product that seems to do what I want. I assume I need a USB dongle that gives a firewire port and has drivers so that the PC sees it as a regular firewire port. Thanks for any recommendations
