• When Installing Oracle Client 11.1.0.7 can I use a common directory for Oracle Base?

  I am trying to install Oracle Client 11.1.0.7 on a Windows Server 2008 64-bit. To some this might not be rocket science but I can't understand what the options under the install screen "Specify Home Details" mean. The defaults given suggest that I use Oracle Base and install software under my own account name. It also suggests that each user should have a separate Oracle Base. This seems counter intuitive to me. I am doing a server install after all. All I want to use the installation for is to connect to an Oracle Database from Reporting Services. Can I safely ignore this and just accept the defaults? What are the implications if I change the location to a common directory?

• IIS7 Session ID rotating with Classic ASP

  I am trying to migrate a Classic ASP app onto a Windows 2008 R2 server. The application features run fine, but I am having issue with session. The application keeps the logged in user information in session and I am constantly getting knocked out as if the session had expired. While debugging I have discovered the sessions are not expiring but instead I am getting 2-3 different Session IDs in use by one browser. I am outputting Response.Write(Session.SessionID) on various pages in the application and I can sit there and hit refresh over and over and watch the number changed between these 2-3 SessionIDs randomly. The sessions are still valid because when I refresh and get the Session ID that I logged in under the page is displayed (because the security check was successful) and when I get one of the other Session IDs I get the "you aren't logged in, you need to log in" message. If I close and re-open the browser, same story just the set of IDs are new. This happens with IE8, Firefox and Chrome from multiple computers. Things I've tried: - AppPool set to No Managed Code and Classic - Output Caching set .asp to never cache - ASP Session Properties enabled and disabled asp session state and confirmed it affected page (error trying to read Session.SessionID when disabled) Things I've tried just in case but shouldn't have anything to do with ASP Session: - Disabled compression - Changed ASP.Net Session State properties (InProc, StateServer, SQLServer, Cookies, URI, etc) -

• Sql Server 2005 Service Pack 3 does not install

  I'm trying to install SP3 on an install of Sql Server 2005 running on Server 2003 32 bit. When I run the installer it doesn't seem to recognize that I have SQL Server 2005 installed. The dialog box that asks what features should be updated doesn't show any by default. More troubling, it doesn't allow me to check any of those boxes to update features like Database Services or Reporting Services. When I select one of these services, the "Status" box says "Not Valid". • Firefox does not load certificate chain

  I'm running lighttpd/1.4.28 (ssl) on Debian Squeeze. I just created a http://startssl.com certificate, I runs fine at all of my Browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Opera), but my users are reporting certificate-errors in Firefox. I already nailed it down to a failing of loading of the certificate chain: Certificate at my Firefox: http://i.stack.imgur.com/moR5x.png Certificate at others Firefox: http://i.stack.imgur.com/ZVoIu.png (Note the missing StartCOM-certificates here) I followed this tutorial for embedding the certificate in my lighttpd: https://forum.startcom.org/viewtopic.php?t=719 The relevant parts of my lighttpd.conf look like this: $SERVER["socket"] == ":443" { ssl.engine = "enable" ssl.ca-file = "/etc/lighttpd/certs/ca-bundle.pem" ssl.pemfile = "/etc/lighttpd/certs/www.bisaboard.crt" } ca-bundle.pem was created like this: cat ca.pem sub.class1.server.ca.pem > ca-bundle.pem I grabbed the relevant files from here: http://www.startssl.com/certs/ www.bisaboard.crt was created like this: cat certificate.pem ssl.key > www.bisaboard.crt Where certificate.pem is my StartSSL-Class1 Certificate and ssl.key my SSL-Root-Key.   Hello, I know there is landscape from canonical, but it has some $$ costs. Als there is webmin, and it can be used as a cluster management tool. Also there is m23, probably the most usable and interesting peace of manager software. But, what would you suggest to install and use on following configuration: 1) 100 desktop users, against an AD with quest authentication services installed. (ubunt8.04,9.04,9.10,10.04) 2) 50 servers (debian sid, lenny , ubuntu 8.04 and 10.04) We work on different software, so each group of persons need different configurations, each server has different pourposses, nothing is clusterized. And we have a good enough backup software.   I have a reporting setup with SSRS on our sql server 2005 database. Because sql server 2008 is not supported by the main program which populates our database we are stuck with 2005 on our prod database. Unfortunately when I run our weekly check reports the web interface constantly times out because the server cant do the conversion to PDF. I've read that sql server 2008's SSRS is ALOT better with memory management. I was wondering if I can do some kind transact log shipping subscription publication from 2005 to 2008? Am I chasing a dream here. Currently I have to open up the ssrs project in visual studio and run the reports inside because it doesn't ever time out when doing the pdf conversion, only times out if I try to run it through the ssis web interface.

• Port forwarding no longer works

  Prior to testing an OpenVPN installation, I setup a basic VPN server using the software already built into Windows 7. Port forwarding on the Linksys router worked as normal and I was able to connect remotely. After doing an install of OpenVPN Access Server on a spare box running Ubuntu, and adding new ports to be forwarded I was unable to access the VPN from an external source as the required ports all indicated that they were closed. (During testing XRDP and VNCSERVER were also installed to facilitate access to the box) Checking back on the Windows 7 VPN resulted in no access to that vpn setup either. All ports are now reporting a being closed despite being previously open even ports that were being used for other services. Adding and removing port forwarding rules seem to have no effect. At this point, in order to troubleshoot, both the firewall and anti-virus software have been disabled on the Windows 7 machine. Could this be just a router issue? Is there any way out of this without having to reset and reconfigure the router?

  Hiya, I'm trying to find an integrated PM solution which will give my business all of the following: Timesheeting so we can track time spent on tasks Holiday planner (integrated with timesheet and project management Project management tool, integrating the above, with milestones, gantt chart, dependancies etc. Forecasting ability (nice to have, but not a requirement) Reporting capability - especially time spent on projects, costs etc. Now yeah, that's quite a lot of functionality, I appreciate that! But currently we've got 3 systems, none of which really talk to each other and it's a right headache. So far we've looked at: OpenWorkbench - not enough features Basecamp - not enough features and too reliant on online MS Project - too expensive? Can anyone throw some other hats into the ring which maybe I've not heard about? Really interested to hear how other people have approached this, it's not an unusual business requirement! Thanks!

• Some people suddenly say they cant access my site, but me and all others can

  I have had this problem many times before and im still unable to find out what is causing it. It happned to me some months ago but it got fixed by itself and had already gone back to normal. Everything was working fine for quite a while until 2 days ago. Some people are reporting they cant access my site, they get a 404 error, however i can access it normally and many other users cant. I dont know whats the common denominator since both groups of people are from the same countries, use the same browsers, OS, etc. so the issue doesnt seem related to that. I have reported this problem before to my both my host and domain registrar but none of them claim responsibility for that. Who is then to blame? Waht can i do to find out whats causing the issue and solve it? Thank you.

• Lost disk space in Windows 7, cannot find the missing

  My hard drive is complaining it is low on disk space, but a strange thing seems to be happening: Explorer reports 10Gb of available space (on a 120 Gb hard disk), chkdsk in the command prompt does the same but if I use a disk space tool such as SpaceSniffer or WinDirStat, only 50Gb of data is found. My guess is that there somehow is a hold on a large block of disk space (but that's just a guess) because of a prior very large (40 Gb) download attempt that didn't complete. There isn't 40Gb of files on the drive (hidden or visible), yet Explorer insists that something is there. How can I claim back this hard disk drive (without formatting my hard disk)? SpaceMonger is providing a clue, reporting four unscannable folders which add up to 43Gb: C:\RRBackups C:\System Volume Information C:\Windows\Csc\v2.06 C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\Wmi\RtBackup Does anybody know what these folders are for, and how I can claim back at least some space? Restore point claims about 4Gb, so that doesn't seem to be the main problem.

  I'm struggling with setting up email reporting in Freenas. My build is FreeNAS-8.0.4-RELEASE-x64 (10351). I have my IPv4 Default gateway set to 192.168.2.1 (my router) and Nameserver 1 as 8.8.8.8 (google's public). Under my email tab I have from email ***@gmail.com outgoing mail server smtp.google.com port to connect to 465 tls/ssl SSL use smtp auth checked username ***@gmail.com password **** I then went into accounts and changed the root email to ***@gmail.com. When I try and send a test email, I get Your test email could not be sent: timed out So what am I doing wrong?

• VSS Not Creating Shadow Set

  I'm trying to setup backup scripts on WinXP to use Volume Shadow Sets. I downloaded the VSS 7.2 SDK from MSFT, and used the include vshadow.exe to create a shadow set: vshadow -script=vss-setvar.cmd f: (note that I've tried both f: and c:) vshadow executes just find, giving no errors, reporting the shadow is created. However, executing vshadow -q as the very next command results in "There are no shadows on the system" and, indeed, if I use dosdev to try and map the Shadow set named in vss-setvar.cmd, it will not work. Am I missing a step?

  Not sure if this belongs here or on SuperUser, feel free to move as appropriate. I've noticed the performance on my RAID0 setup seems to have degraded over the past months. The throughput is fine, but I think the random access time has increased or something. In use I generally see about 1-5mb/sec when loading stuff in Visual Studio and other apps and it doesn't seem like the CPU is bottlenecking as the CPU utilization is pretty low. I don't recall what Access Time used to be, but HD Tune is reporting 12.6ms Read throughput is showing as averaging about 125MB/sec so it should be great for sequential reads. Defrag daily and it shows fragmentation levels low, so that shouldn't be an issue. Additional info, Windows 7 x64, Intel raid controller on mobo, WD Black 500GB (I think 32mb cache) x2.

  I have a MS SQL imported into SQL Server 2008 from a .bak and I set it to Mixed mode. I have a SQL user (called "test") that can correctly access the database using SQL Server. I need to convert this to a MySQL database, so I got the MySQL Migration Toolkit. I pick "MS SQL Server" and then it asks for the hostname/username/password/database. I'm not 100% sure on these, but I used "localhost" (running on same computer), left the port as is (1433) and the username/password ("test") for the SQL Server. And I used the database name for the SQL Server database I'm looking to import. • Mysterious login attempts to windows server

  I have a Windows 2008R2 server that is reporting failed login attempts from a number of workstations on our network. Some event log details: Event ID 4625, Status: 0xc000006d, Sub Status: 0xc0000064 Security ID: NULL SID, Account Name: joedoe, Account Domain: Acme Workstation Name: WINXP1, Source Network Address: 192.168.1.23, Source Port: 1904 Logon Process: NtLmSsp, Authentication Package: NTLM, Logon Type: 3 (network) I believe this is coming from some netbios service or similar (maybe the file explorer), keeping an inventory of its network neighborhood and also trying to authenticate. Is there a way to turn this off without having to turn off file sharing all together? In other words, clients authenticating against file servers that they use is of course no problem, but I want to eliminate clients trying to authenticate to servers that they are not using and have no business with. The above example is only one of thousands of log alerts for similar failed network authentications. What can I do to clean this up / handle this? Thanks.

• Windows SBS 2011 DNS Role (service) failing & needing restarting

  Have a Windows SBS 2011 with Exchange that is handling all DNS for the network. Since getting a 3rd party (Hardware & Support) to setup a recieving FTP service and restricting Exchanges memory useage for another 3rd party product (Stock software) the local network seems to periodically 'lose the internet connection'. Delving deeper I found that the DNS service is somehow failing/stopping without the actual service on the server reporting such (nothing in event logs). A simple restart of the 'DNS Role' on the server solves the problem. The manager onsite reports that he has to do this most days in the afternoon - yet not at the same time and other days it works fine without a restart being required. I'm unable (lacking sufficient SBS2011 knowledge) to diagnose this further, ideally I would like the DNS Role to report (and log) the failure, then automatically restart itself.

• Need help with Microsoft Access 07 & Reports

  I'm finding it difficult to get MS reporting working to what I'd like to show. What I'm trying to do is: a) In my database store a URL file (HTTP external file), that is a .jpeg. I'd like to use that URL to call the image on the report sheet. I have tried to use 'Control source' on the data panel, but with no success. Any way I can get Dynamic Images to show up on each database. Also, I have a couple of Relational Databases. One Defines Values: For Example: DefinePets('petID','Name of Pet') The other one links the Main DB with the 'DefinePets' database. Eg: connect('petID','mainID','extraFeild') I'd like my report to Go into the "connect" Table, where the the currently viewed Record Value = mainID, then find petID and return Name of Pet. There is a many to many link between definePets and the main Table. (Therefore connect is joining them up) Or is that too much to ask from a simple package like Access?

• MediaShield RAID 5 is showing up as 760GB when the actual size is 2.7TB

  I just finished setting up Windows 2003 Server on my new server. And I started setting up a RAID 5 for it. I have 4x1TB Hard Drives. From MediaSheild RAID Utility (at boot time) the RAID size is displayed as 2.7TB. Linux also shows it as 2.7TB. However, in Windows, everything (including Windows Disk Management as well as Windows based MediaShield utility) is reporting only 760Gb. I already tried converting partitioning table to GUID from MBR, because I read somewhere that Windows can only handle up to 2TB MBR tables, that didn't help much. Tried searching for partitioning utilities that I could use, but couldn't find anything free. Formatted the disk as NTFS partition from within Linux, it stop showing in Windows all together, even MediaShield windows utility isn't showing at anymore. Windows is installed on a separate 500Gb hard drive, that's setup not to support RAID. Any ideas?

• SSRS/Sharepoint - Reports made in Report Builder not being list in Sharepoint Web Part

  I followed the steps here to integrate reporting services with sharepoint in native mode. I made a page in Sharepoint with the report explorer web part and everything is working. The issue is when I create a report with the web based report builder tool, it will show up in the report manager page, but not show up in the report explorer web part on the share point page. New reports I upload using report manager do show up. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm really stuck.

• Is it possible to export Windows event logs from multiple servers to a non-windows host, without running event manager on each of the Windows servers?

  I want to export event logs from Windows to a non-Windows host. I was considering using Logstash, but that would seem to require that I install and run Logstash on each server. Is it possible to do this without having to run it on all of the servers? I am hoping to be able to consolidate all of the information from different servers to make searching and reporting much easier. If not, what would you recommend is the best way to export to a non-Windows host in real time? Thank you.

  Hi all, I've been using Ganglia to monitor my single Mac OSX server which runs Apache and MySQL. I'm ok with it. Now we are upgrading our servers, 6 IBM X3650 M3 and 2 Fujitsu servers. 2 IBM for Apache cluster and 4 IBM for MySQL NDB Cluster. The other two servers are for Load balancers. All servers are going to run Debian Lenny 5 on it. Now I need to decide on which monitoring tool I should go for. I found that BixData and Zabbix does an excellent job than Ganglia, in terms of sensors and reporting. Have anyone tried the above two tools? And which tool would you suggest me? For Debian. As I'm writing this, I'm installing BixData to try.... Thanks in advance.
