• Desktop appliciations are unable to launch my browser in Windows 8 [migrated]

  I have a fresh copy of Windows 8 Pro installed from MSDN. I have Google Chrome installed (stable channel) and it is set as my default browser. I even went into Control Panel Default Programs to ensure that Chrome had all its defaults. When other desktop applications try to launch my browser they always fail. For example, while trying to install the Android SDK for Windows the installer accurately detected that I did not have the JDK installed. It provides a friendly button to visit java.oracle.com. When pressing this button, nothing happens at all. You can see that here: http://youtu.be/XXL8GhuWWg0 If it were only that application that was having issues I wouldn't think anything of it but I have been encountering similar issues all over the place. Probably the most irritating one is when visual studio has updates; clicking the update button does nothing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwd1mn3TId0 You can see in that screencast that Visual Studio is not able to launch the browser no matter what I click. The update button doesn't do anything and neither do the two links in the update's description. Any suggestions? I'm assuming it's a Windows issue since it is happening in multiple applications.

• Getting empty update rectangle in OnPaint after calling InvalidateRect on a layered window

  I'm trying to figure out why I've been getting an empty update rectangle when I call InvalidateRect on a transparent window. The idea is that I've drawn something on the window (it gets temporarily switched to have an alpha of 1/255 for the drawing), and then I switch it to full transparent mode (i.e. alpha of 0) in order to interact with the desktop & to be able to move the drawing around the screen on top of the desktop. When I try to move the drawing, I get its bounding rectangle & use it to call InvalidateRect, as such: InvalidateRect(m_hTarget, &winRect, FALSE); I've confirmed that the winRect is indeed correct, and that m_hTarget is the correct window & that its rectangle fully encompasses winRect. I get into the OnPaint handler in the class corresponding to m_hTarget, which is derived from a CWnd. In there, I create a CPaintDC, but when I try to access the update rectangle (dcPaint.m_ps.rcPaint) it's always empty. This rectangle gets passed to a function that determines if we need to update the screen (by using UpdateLayeredWindow in the case of a transparent window). If I hard-code a non-empty rectangle in here, the remaining code works correctly & I am able to move the drawing around the screen. I tried changing the 'FALSE' parameter to 'TRUE' in InvalidateRect, with no effect. I also tried using a standard CDC, and then using BeginPaint/EndPaint method in my OnPaint handler, just to ensure that CPaintDC wasn't doing something odd ... but I got the same results. The code that I'm using was originally designed for opaque windows. If m_hTarget corresponds to an opaque window, the same set of function calls results in the correct (i.e. non-empty) rectangle being passed to OnPaint. Once the window is layered, though, it doesn't seem to work right.

• JS window.close() let IE hang

  Hi all, for reason I won't bore you with, I'm writing an asp.net application that must open some pages in new browser windows. I managed to open them within a postback (don't ask why, I just needed to) with this code: script = String.Format(@"window.open(""{0}"", ""{1}"");", url, target); ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript(page, typeof(Page), "Redirect", script, true); Now I have new windows each one with a button that should close it. I have simply an onclick="window.close()" (but that prompts me when I'm closing the browser) or window.open('','_self','');window.close() (horrible, I agree but it's the only way I found to avoid the JS prompt) On firefox it works perfectly but on IE7 (the browser our customers have) after 2-3 times I use that button to close the window I can't open other windows (in both cases, with or without the JS prompt). With the method above it does nothing, and with a <a href="mypage.aspx" target="_blank">click me</a> a new window is opened but hangs on loading (it doesn't even calls the Page_Load). What could be the cause? How can I solve this? Thank you.

However on Vista the text doesn't move, it stays in its location no matter how I resize the window. the g.Clear(Color::White) doesn't seem to do any difference. The text doesn't even change position when the window is hidden behind another window and on focus needs to be repainted again. How do I make mName change position in Vista?

• how to throttle http requests on a linux machine?

  EDIT: here is the summery: i need to reduce max connections preferably system wide on Ubuntu 11.04 but at least within Google Chrome. i do not need or want to throttle bandwidth, Verizon seems to only care about the number of connections so that is all i want to change. also, i don't want to use firefox unless i have to, i have three other machines all using chrome and synced and i just prefer it over firefox. i use tethering for my home internet connection via my verizon cell phone. without paying for it. this works just fine for streaming netflix via my nintendo wii and pretty much every other conceivable use ive had for it. except, during heavy usage with multiple tabs open on my laptop, the network connection on my phone will just turn off, then on again, then off, but it never fully connects. i think, based on this and other questions that this is caused by verizon getting too many http requests from my phone. is there some software, script, setting or otherwise that would allow me to throttle my requests to say, 5 or 10 or whatever it turns out is 1 less than verizon is looking for, so that my cell's network connection is not lost? i would far prefer a slow down rather than complete shut off of my internet connection. i am almost certain is from quantity of requests and not related to data, because, as i mentioned, netflix will run all day without a hitch, and that uses more data than anything else i would be doing. if i had a router i am pretty sure there are settings i could easily change to only allow so many requests at a time ... but in this case, my phone is my router, so no settings. im using ubuntu 11.04 on my netbook with an htc incredible on verizon (not that the phone details are relevant) i have been trying to figure this out for quite some time, currently the only fix is ensure that all requests are stopped and then sometimes it works again, other times i have to manually turn my 3g service off and then back on. thank you so much for any assistance!

  Hi all, Problem with filtering Dropdown list. The scenario is : in scroll window there are two fields Document types and type id: Document type is Dropdown list: As per document type selection type id look should display the values. For ex. If I select quote type from document type and if I open type id look up it should display only quotation in the look window. It should work for all the values of document type drop down list values. Its working fine. The item in the document types are: Quote, Order, Invoice, Return, BackOrder. The problem is after saving the data when I am displaying the same record in scroll window, suppose after displaying document type is QUOTE and document id is QTOARD, and in this position I am changing the document type from dropdown QUOTE to ORDER at this time warning message should c ome this range entered is in valid. Because in database table there is no document QTOARD for ORDER type. The same should work for all the condition. The table name is SOP_ID_Setp and key is SOP Type and DocumentID. • How to fix this window.open memory leak?

  Hi there, I was recently looking at this memory leak tool sIEve: http://home.orange.nl/jsrosman/ So I decided to test out the tool by creating a main page that will open up a popup window. I started by creating 3 pages: index.html, page1.html and page2.html, the index.html page will open a child window (popup) linking to page1.html. Page1 will have a anchor tag that links to page2.html, while page2 will have a link back to page1.html PROBLEM So in the tool I entered the index.html page, popup window opened to page1.html, I then clicked the page2 link, no leaks detected yet. While I'm on page2 I click the link back to page1, and that's where the tool claims there is a link. The leak seems to be happening on the index.html page and I have no idea as to why it would be doing that. Even more concerning is that I can see elements that the tool detects that aren't even on my page. Does anyone have any experience with this tool or know if this really is a memory leak? Any samples of showing how to achieve what I'm doing without memory leaks? • Full page reload on Post/Redirect/Get ignoring cache control

  I have a page that loads a lot of images, css and javascript. I've added a far future Expires header and set Cache-Control to public on these external dependencies so they should be cached. But every time I do a Post/Redirect/Get chrome tries to load these again. This behavior is very similar to reloading the page. I've added ETags and handle the If-None-Match header which helps a bit, but it still generates too many useless requests. But Chrome includes the browser frame dimensions when sizing the popup, which means that the body element is less than the required size.... i.e. if the browser titlebar is 10px high, then this is subtracted from the space allocated to the body element How do I tell Chrome, that I want the body element to be 320 by 300, and that I dont want it to subtract the width and height of the browser frame from body element dimensions It's a bit like the old box-model problem where FF and IE added padding in different ways except firefox adds the browser frame outside the desired 320x300 size, and Chrome is adding it inside

• Wikipedia Images don't show up in browsers

  It's a weird issue with wikipedia which had left me frustrated. When I go to wikipedia, with different browsers ( IE8, Chrome3, Opera10 ) no image in the site will show up. Even right-clicking the image to ( show, save, open in new tab/window ) will return nothing except when open in new tab/window I'll get a black horizontal line across the page. All my browsing across the web goes flawlessly, and every image in every site show up normally except in the wikipedia site. I have win7 ultimate with all updates.

  Running Fedora 14 and realize I need to either change distros or find an alternative to GNOME 3 in Fedora 17. Based on what I have read to-date, XFCE and KDE are the go-to WMs if I want to avoid GNOME 3. I tried KDE 4 and I wasn't impressed; I like the simplicity of GNOME 2 with Compiz and Emerald. Can't stay on Fedora 14 forever, however, so...where to turn? Basically looking for these features in my desktop environment: GNOME Do or equivalent Snap to grid/Window tiling A must-have, the ability to hot key focused window to a monitor grid region is a huge productivity win. Zoom window to cursor In a multi-monitor setup sometimes it's nice to, say, GNOME Do terminal in one monitor and then hot key the opened window to the other monitor just by zipping the mouse cursor anywhere on target monitor (followed by, of course, snap-to-grid hotkey, all without a single mouse click) Polarization At night white background hurts the eyes, so I prefer to hot key polarize to black. Multi-monitor support I'm partial to Fedora given that I've worked with CentOS for years and have little experience with any other Linux distro; however, if the difference between Fedora and Arch, Mint, etc. is fairly subtle, I'll make the leap, just need a distro & desktop environment that allows me to be productive with keyboard hot keys and provides the above basic features. Any suggestions?

• Is there a quick way to remove browser decorations

  I'm finding that more and more applications use browsers as their user interface and I am caught in a dilemma. When browsing I want a browser window to have browser buttons, navigation icons, etc. When I'm using the browser for an application like twitter or yammer then I don't need those and having them just reduces the application area. I would rather save the vertical space and have a very sparse undecorated window. The problem is it does not seem easy to do this. My initial thought was to just install two different browsers. For example use Firefox with all the toolbars and then set IE to show no toolbars. I think this is ok but I would like a cleaner solution. Maybe a plugin in Firefox that turns everything off easily or something.

• Anonymous file sharing without login window, from Windows 7 server to XP clients

  I'm trying to provide machines on a small LAN with read-only, anonymous access to files shared from a Windows 7 workstation (let's call it WIN7SVR). In particular, I don't want clients to have to deal with a login window when they navigate to, e.g., \\WIN7SVR in Windows Explorer, but we do not have a domain and synchronizing accounts between the server and clients would be intractable. There are both Windows 7 and Windows XP clients that need access to these shares. I got this working for Windows 7 clients by just enabling the Guest account on WIN7SVR and setting appropriate share permissions. Other Windows 7 machines automatically try logging in as Guest, it seems, so their users don't have to deal with the login window. The problem is with the XP clients--they can access the server if the user enters "Guest" in the login window, but I don't want users to have to do that. So from what I gather, in my limited understanding of Windows file sharing, this boils down to granting null sessions access to file shares on WIN7SVR. But I've had no success so far on that front. I've tried all the following in the local group policy editor on the Windows 7 server: Set Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users to Enabled Set Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and Shares to Disabled Added the names of corresponding shares to Network access: Shares that can be accessed anonymously Added "ANONYMOUS LOGON" to Access this computer from the network under User Rights Assignment Any advice would be highly appreciated... I'm mostly a Unix guy, so I feel somewhat out of my league with Windows file sharing. I do understand that any sort of anonymous access to file shares isn't generally ideal from a security standpoint, but it's the most practical solution for us in this case, and access to our network is well enough controlled that share-level security isn't a concern.

• What is causing ocassional white windows on my Mac?

  Hello. I'm having a very strange problem with my Mac lately. When I'm working in an app and a new window pane or sheet is displayed, sometimes it comes up completely white. Once an app is having these problems, it will continue to bring up a blank screen for that particular window (although other windows work fine). After the app is relaunched, the window is fine again. What I'm noticing that's very strange is that although the interface turns completely white, the functions of the interface are still available. So I have to "navigate blindly" around the interface, until I can relaunch. This occurs throughout the operating system. Screenshots: This is what happened when I tried opening the File menu in Lightroom app. What happened to me on Lynda.com (in Firefox) after selecting the "Software..." dropdown. (All other dropdowns were fine. Reloading the page fixed it.) When I was decompressing a file, The Unarchiver launched and opened this white window. It still decompressed the file. This is what happened one time when I opened Finder (with TotalFinder) to my Downloads folder. This is something I've never seen before. This just started happening lately. What could be the problem? Thanks for your help. NOTE: since new users are not allowed to post images, just image blank white interface elements. • Firefox window disappears

  Now this is odd. At some point in the last half hour, my Firefox window disappeared. I didn't notice, as I was working in another program at the time. No Firefox icon shows up with Alt-Tab, and no Firefox listing shows up under the Applications tab in the task manager. There is a Firefox entry under the Processes tab. Normally, I probably wouldn't have noticed, just opened Firefox up again, but I'm listening to an Internet radio station and the stream never stopped. When I did open a new Firefox window, it showed up in the Task Manager's applications tab. I'm running Windows XP, and my Firefox has the add-ons Adblock Plus, BetterPrivacy, Cert Viewer Plus, DOM Inspector, Firebug, Greasemonkey, Java Quick Starter, Live HTTP headers, Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant, NoScript, WebDeveloper and XPather. The radio station is Slacker; it's never given me any trouble before, and I've been using it for months. I don't think there was anything unusual in my open tabs; just a few static pages at non-sketchy sites like Java APIs, plus GMail and the aforementioned Slacker. Googling brought up a handful of similar-but-not-quite-the-same errors, none of which had useful resolutions. Does anyone know how to bring that window back and/or prevent this from happening again?

• C# lost local variable window from debug (f11 step by step)

  I was running my code (visual studio 2010) and I accidentally closed the window that shows the state of variables step by step. I think it was called locals but I can't find it on any of the menu option. Would appreciate any help on this, I didn't realize how handy it was until now - The following link is what my local window looks like when selecting debug/start debugging/selecting breakpoints, which I'm don't find helpful. • why lynx browser sometimes can open a page that normal browser can not

  I found a really interesting peculiarity of Lynx while trying to write an application using bitcoin. The problem is that although the bitcoin site does not always open with modern browsers like Google Chrome or Firefox, it always opens using the Lynx browser. The same peculiarity appears with some other web-sites. I was wondering what the reason could be for this but was not able to come up with any. Any ideas, or this is just coincidence?

  I have a ThinkPad X61, and I'd like to configure sensitivity of the Synaptics pointing stick scrolling feature on a per-application basis. I did this about 4 years ago on my ThinkPad T41, using a configuration file - but I can no longer find any info on this configuration file, and there are no configuration files under C:\Program Files\Synaptics. The pointing stick is usually known as TrackPoint or UltraNav in IBM material. Specifically, I'm trying to reduce scrolling sensitivity in Google Chrome on a Windows 7 64-bit X61 ThinkPad.

A simple utility that would ask "Clear all browser caches?" with Yes/No. Just the major browsers -IE, Firefox, Safari, Chrome and optionally Opera I understand CCleaner can do this but it is not as simple as I would like (as it has other functions as well). • IE9 syntax on jquery crossbrowser with jsonp and FF, Chrome

  I have the following code and i have a problem in ensuring part of it is used when a IE browser is used, and remove it when any other browser is used: $.ajax({ url: 'http://mapit.mysociety.org/areas/'+ulo, type: 'GET', cache: false, crossDomain: true, dataType: 'jsonp', success: function(response) { This works fine in IE9 because I have put the dataType as jsonp. But this will not work on Chrome or FF. So I need to remove the dataType. I tried this: <!--[IF IE]> dataType: 'jsonp', <![endif]--> But it did not work. It's worth noting, it does not need the dataType set when in FF or Chrome as it's json. Whats the correct syntax to have this work ? Thanks Andrew

• Ignore mapping when in text input box

  I have AutoHotkey set up in a way that is recognises Cmd-Left and Cmd-Right keystrokes as back/forward navigation in Chrome. Problem is that it also recognises those keys being pressed while I am entering text in textboxes. However when entering text, I'd would like those key combinations to carry out different function - jump to beginning/end of the line, similar to Ctrl-Left/Right. Is there a way to have one mapping working for text boxes and another mapping for everything else in AutoHotkey?
