• Safety of installing Ubuntu alongside Windows

I never used that option, instead I used other tools such as partition magic or windows 7's disk tool to resize my partitions. Since I'm going to install Ubuntu across a lot windows (XP, Vista and 7) machines. It would not be nice to damage those Windows partitions. What is your experience? • Will installing Ubuntu using Wubi erase Windows?

  I have an HP laptop with 2 partitions: C: and D:, with windows 7 installed in the C: drive and D: is the Recovery partition. When I try to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS using Wubi, it only shows the C: drive for installing and not the D: drive where I wanted to format and install ubuntu. So, if I go ahead and install in the C: drive where windows 7 is already installed, would Wubi erase windows 7? Or it will just install Ubuntu as a program in windows?

  I have a Mac server running OS X Server 10.5 Server and as a PDC for our Windows XP systems. I'd like to use the OS X Server as a PDC for our Windows 7 boxes but the version of Samba in OS X Server is not compatible with Windows 7. It appears that my best bet is to use Ubuntu Server as my PDC. I want the Windows boxes to obtain authentication information from the Mac Server's LDAP. Any suggestions are appreciated.

• Win8/7/XP print spooler not getting along with Zebra ZT230 via WIFI

  I have a graphics-intensive 4"x6" label I'm printing to the ZT230. I'm printing multiple (10) copies. When connected via USB, all goes well. However, when connected via wifi, I only get 2 of the labels. A wireshark capture shows that at some point in the process my computer (presumably my windows spooler) is sending a reset packet, which, I believe, would pretty much kill the print job. I'm getting the same results on Win8, Win7 and WinXP. The print job was originally generated on Zebra's ZebraDesigner2 software. For easier diagnosis, I captured it to a .prn file. • Can I setup a test server and then transfer everything to a diff. production server?

  Hello, I am going to be setting up a "real" server, but it's not being shipped for another week. I was planning on setting up most of the server's functionality using an extra workstation I have. I wanted to set-up Windows Server 2003 or 2008, IIS, Terminal Services, Firewall, and Antivirus on this regular machine. I'd also be installing software like Winzip and VMWare that'll be used on the server. I can't ghost the machine, as far as I've done in the past, because the motherboard/cpu/etc. will all be different. Is there any way to export all of the "server settings" or something like that so I can move everything from test to production? Is there any software out there that does something similar to this? Some things I'm going to have to wait on such as setting up the file server completely in its raid configuration, but I'd like to get the simple server stuff and network setup out of the way. Has anyone done this before? Do I need software, open-source or not, to do this? Or maybe there's a way to export all the server settings in some way? Thanks in advance! Justin

• How can I determine what is killing my network adapter win7 or vista?

  I thought this issue was like another person here, and that downloading the nvidia chipset drivers was the solution. However that is not all that is going on. This machine had Vista 64bit and is now Win7. Same issue with both. I have explicitly been denying network driver updates since getting things working again and when a Windows updates occurs on seemingly benign Office updates the adapter fails to work. Is the update process somehow protecting this machine by turning off things and it fails to recover connectivity after a restart? All that seems to ever work is a system restore. Which does work. Since there are 25 pending updates asking to do there thing, I hate to think this is a one by one update test to find the culprit. Any ideas? This has an integrated nic, video, and I guess audio on the motherboard. ES5200 intel cpu on a gateway 4800-05e I am not quite sure how to determine the actual network adapter. This is a wired adapter. I suppose worst case I can try another adapter if this keeps happening.

• scalable yet doable small-medium office network

  Hello, I'm studying up with both Microsoft and Cisco literature and I must say, my head is starting to get clustered up (pun intended). I've made a quick network diagram of a theoretical company... Company1 owns Company 2 and Company 3, which are all under separate rooms and networks, but must be able to share a few resources such as files or printers. Given the amount of info out there and best practices, I thought about posting here to get suggestions and see what would the pro's do. I can read and read all day and implement on my own, but if I dont get some outside input, how will I know if I'm doing something wrong, right? anyway, please take a look and see if this is an over-complicated network or a lackluster design for a small-medium company of about 35 people and lets say they will be double that number by end of the year... :) Using win2k3, esxi, windows xp.   This may not be the correct place to post this; if that's the case, just let me know and point me in the right direction please! I'm thinking of building a box that needs to be lightweight and portable, and would need to be able to boot multiple installations of windows. I am needing to have multiple installations so that I can, for example, plug the box in to the network at one location, boot in to that location's partition, and have full access to everything I would normally need to do on a computer that has already been set up on that network. Then, when I go to the next client, I would be able to do the same thing, with the new location's partition, and have all of those network settings, drive mappings, etc., available there. Obviously I'd need to go through and set them all up on the different locations/networks, I'm not expecting it to magically know where I am and what I'm doing. It would be like I'm carrying around a computer that is configured for each place I need to go in one little box, instead of having to have multiple computers or having to reconfigure all the settings and such every time I go to another client. Or is there an easier way to do this that I haven't learned of?

  I know the bits just came out today, but one of the first things I want to do with the newly released Windows Mobile 7 SDK is put a map up on the screen and mess around. I've downloaded the latest version of the Silverlight Maps Control and added the references to my application. As a matter of fact, the VS 2010 design view of the MainPage.xaml shows the map control after adding the namespace and placing the control. I'm using the provided VS 2010 Express version that comes with the Win Mobile 7 SDK and have just used the New Project - Windows Phone Application template. When I try to build I get two warnings related to the Microsoft.Maps.MapControl dll's. Warning 1 The primary reference "Microsoft.Maps.MapControl, Version=1.0.1.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=498d0d22d7936b73, processorArchitecture=MSIL" could not be resolved because it has an indirect dependency on the framework assembly "System.Windows.Browser, Version=2.0.5.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=7cec85d7bea7798e" which could not be resolved in the currently targeted framework. "Silverlight,Version=v4.0,Profile=WindowsPhone". To resolve this problem, either remove the reference "Microsoft.Maps.MapControl, Version=1.0.1.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=498d0d22d7936b73, processorArchitecture=MSIL" or retarget your application to a framework version which contains "System.Windows.Browser, Version=2.0.5.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=7cec85d7bea7798e".   I have two machines - Windows XP and a laptop using Windows 7. I connected them with a WLAN cable. On the Windows XP machine, I set the IP address to 192.168.0.10. On the Windows 7 laptop, I set the IP address to 192.168.0.20. The laptop can see the Windows XP machine, but Windows XP machine cannot see the Windows 7 machine. But this does NOT concern me. I want to move the files from my desktop (Windows XP) to Windows 7 (laptop). That's why I'm going through all this. The problem is that when I try to connect from Windows 7 to Windows XP machine, I get this window: I don't understand what username/password is needed. I use none on the Windows XP machine.   Virtual Win XP Mode stopped HP LJ Pro M1212nf MFP printing in Win 7 Pro: I am running Windows 7 Pro with Virtual Windows XP Mode. My printer is HP LaserJet Pro M1212nf MFP attached directly to a USB port of the computer. This printer was working fine in Windows 7, until I tried to attach the printer to the Virtual Windows XP Mode in order to load the printer driver in the Virtual Windows XP Mode. At that point, the printer disappeared from the list of USB devices on the toolbar at the top of the window of the Virtual Windows XP Mode. After installing the printer driver in the Virtual Windows XP Mode, the printer did not work in that mode and also no longer worked in Windows 7. In Windows 7 and in the Virtual Windows XP Mode, print files are sent to the print queue, but are never printed. In Windows 7, the print queue states that the printer is offline. In the Virtual Windows XP Mode, the printer can be toggled from "Print Offline" to "Print Online", but no print files are ever printed from the print queue. The printer acts as though it is no longer connected to the computer, even though it is still physically connected to the USB port of the computer. How can I get the printer to work again in Windows 7? (At this point, I am no longer interested in using the Virtual Windows XP Mode.) I have tried a large number of things to find and fix the printer problem, but have had no success. Device Manager cannot see the printer even though it is physically connected via USB port (have tried different USB ports) to the computer. Restoring Win 7 and Virtual Win XP Mode to times before the problem does not fix the problem. How can I get the computer to see the printer, so that I can print again in Win 7?

I'm actually in a bit of a good position right now as I have a blank slate in front of me (i.e. not locked into a phone already) but on the same token, I also don't want to invest too much money into hardware and the like since this will likely not be a money making venture. • Slow SQL Sync with Microsoft Sync Framework on Mobile Client

  Hello, we are developing an application which uses MS Sync Framework to sync data between Windows CE 6.0 with SQL CE 3.5 SP1 Clients and an SQL 2008 Database. Our major problem is a slow sync time up to 1 minute for 15 tables which are totally empty. Here's a break down of our components: Server: Sql Server 2008 15 tables with activated change tracking WCF Service with endpoint for the mobile sync (uses Sync Framework 2.0) Client (Mobile) Windows CE 6.0 NET Application using Sync Framework for Devices (CTP 1) which starts the sync As I mentioned above, the sync takes up to 1 minute without any changes and empty tables. The mobile device is in its dock. This is a deal breaker for a production environment. Does anybody have any experience in this field? Is there a way to improve things? Thanks for any responses.

  Is it possible to install Android in a normal mobile phone? I have Sony Ericsson Naite which has only key pad interface (No touch). I would like to install Android in my phone for experimenting with it. It will be great if its possible to dual boot Android with Symbian :-).
