• Saving Dragged Dropped items position on postback in asp.net [closed]

  Ok i saw many post's on how to serialize the value of dragged items to get hash and they tell how to save them. Now the question is how do i persist the dragged items the next time when user log's in using the has value that i got eg: <ul class="list"> <li id="id_1"> <div class="item ui-corner-all ui-widget ui-widget-content"> </div> </li> <li id="id_2"> <div class="item ui-corner-all ui-widget ui-widget-content"> </div> </li> <li id="id_3"> <div class="item ui-corner-all ui-widget ui-widget-content"> </div> </li> <li id="id_4"> <div class="item ui-corner-all ui-widget"> </div> </li> </ul> which on serialize will give "id[]=1&id[]=2&id[]=3&id[]=4" Now think that i saved it to Sql server database in a single field called SortOrder. • 2011 Tech Goal Review

  A year ago I wrote a post listing my professional goals for 2011.  I thought I would review them and see how I did. Release an Android app to the marketplace – Didn’t do it.  In fact, haven’t really touched Android much since I wrote that.  I still have some ideas but am not sure if I will get around to it. Contribute free software to the community – I did do this.  I have been collaborating with others via github more lately. Regularly attend a user group meetings outside of Java – Did not do this.  Family life being what it is makes this not that much of a priority right now. Obtain the Oracle Certified Web Developer Certification – Did not do this.  This is not much of a priority to me any more. Learn scala – I am about 50/50 on this one.  I read a few scala books but did not write an actual application. Write an app using JSF – Did not do this.  Still interested. Present at a user group meeting – I did a Maven presentation at the Java user group. Use git more, and more effectively – Definitely did this.  Using it on a daily basis now. Overall, I got about halfway on my goals.  It’s not too bad since I did do a few things that weren’t on my list. Learned to develop applications using GWT and deploy them to Google App Engine Converted one of my sites from PHP to Ruby / Sinatra (learning to use it in the process) Studied up on the HTML 5 features and did a lot of Javascript development

• Introducing a (new) test method to a team

  A couple of months ago i was hired in a new job. (I'm fresh out of my Masters in software engineering) The company mainly consists of ERP consultants, but I was hired in their fairly small web department (6 developers), our main task is ERP/ecom integration (ERP-integrated web shops). The department is growing, and recently my manager asked me to start thinking about introducing tests to the team, i love a challenge, but frankly I'm a bit scared (I'm the least experience member of the team). Currently the method of testing is clicking around in the web shop and asking the customer if the products are there, if they look okay, and if orders are posted correctly to the ERP. We are getting a lot of support cases on previous projects, where a customer or a customer's customer have run into errors, which - i suppose - is why my manager wants more structured testing. Off the top of my head, I though of some (obvious?) improvements, like looking at the requirement specification, having an issue tracker, enabling team members to register their time on a "tests"-line on the budget, and to circulate tasks amongst members of the team. But as i see it we have three main challenges: general website testing. (javascript, C#, ASP.NET and CMS integration tests) (live) ERP integration testing (customers rarely want to pay for test environments). adopting a method in the team I like the responsibility, but I am afraid that I'm in a little bit over my head. I expect that my manager expects me to set up some kind of workshop for the team where I present some techniques and ideas and where we(the team) can find some solutions together. What I learned in school was mostly unit testing and program verification, not so much testing across multiple systems and applications. What I'm looking for here, is references/advice/pointers/anecdotes; anything that might help me to get smarter and to improve the current method of my team. Thanks!! (TL;DR: read the bold parts)

• Setting Redmine path

  Hello, How can I set the path on which Redmine should be run, e.g. example.com:3000/redmine instead of example.com:3000? There is an appropriately named option in the settings panel, but it serves a different purpose, according to the documentation and experimental observations (it is used to write URL in emails sent to users). A wider picture: I need this in order to properly serve Redmine on port 80 over Apache's mod_proxy (i.e. at example.com/redmine). The problem is that when running it on /, the home page fails to load the necessary resources (such as JavaScript and CSS files). Any workarounds?

• Why can't I create direct3d objects?

  I've been programming professionally for years using languages like VBScript, JavaScript, and C#. As a hobby, I'm getting into some c/c++ and games programming with DirectX. I am running into an issue where I cannot create direct3d objects. I am using Visual C++ 2010 Express. After I installed vc++2010express I then installed the June 2010 release of DirectX. I am trying to include DirectX via #pragma statements. • Making an advertising server ads from different ad networks

  In India there are many ad-networks(other than Adsense) who pay per acquisition or per lead. So Javascript ad code is not required(as fraud clicks don't matter as long as one converts). So an ad network will have many companies and each company will have many banner sizes for ads. Also suddenly any ad may be stopped just because company's target has met. Which is a common nuisance since if we don't remove those url's then that company will get conversions for free. I've a dozen sites and removing the ads are difficult every now and then. Also CPA based ads may not convert at all. That means I'll need to remove non-performing ads regularly. I've gone through: How can I show multiple ad networks on my site? . I've also visited DFP solution but without Adsense they wouldn't let me open account. I want to make an ad server wherein I'll feed new ads (banner image + link for click). I want to maintain categories there like ( shoes, phones, books etc). So if an ad is paused - i'll simply remove/pause the ad there while other ads in the category keep running. Also changing ad code within sites will no more be required. For example - let me have an ad category "clothing" where I can add ads from different companies. So if one of my site requests an ad from there it'll randomly select an ad in this category and return it to site for display. Removing/adding ads within this category will not affect the site requesting those ads. Any idea how to implement it?

• How programmers can afford to NOT learn new things.

  Good day! I am wondering how programmers learn many things because as a career shifter (from engineering to IT), I find it really hard to absorb everything. Three months ago, I learned HTML/CSS/Javascript. Two months ago, I learned mySQL and CCNA1. One month ago I learned C and Java. Now I am trying to learn J2EE. But it seems that I must combine everything I learned then add more into my brain (especially because J2EE is HUGE! -- XML, servlets, JSP, JSTL, EJB, frameworks(Hibernate, Structs, Spring), JDBC... and so on!!!) So I am wondering, how can programmers learn everything, then add something new without being confused of everything! Because Right now, I feel like my brain is going to explode because of information overload! And these knowledge I am trying to acquire are just the BASICS of programming (icing on the cake)! I still need to learn MORE to become a good programmer! And new technology emerges now and then that requires programmers to learn more again.. Learn.. learn.. learn... Any suggestions on how you as a programmer fit all you've learned into your brain? And how do you know which is the right thing for you to learn? Aren't you afraid that what you've learned may be obsolete next year then start learning again...?

• Nginx no static files after update

  First, i must say that i am not expert in server administration, my site was setup by hosting admins (that i cannot contact anymore). Few days ago, i updated Nginx to latest version (admin told me that it is safe to do). But after that, my site serves only html content, no CSS, images, JS. If i try to open some image i get message "Wellcome to Nginx" (same thin if i try to open static.mysitedomain.com). More details: Site has static. subdomain, but static files are in same directory as they used to be before setting up static files. I was googling for some solutions, i tried to change something in /etc/nginx/, but no luck. I feel that this is some minor configuration problem, any ideas? • Collision Detection with SAT: False Collision for Diagonal Movement Towards Vertical Tile-Walls?

  Edit: Problem solved! Big thanks to Jonathan who pointed me in the right direction. Sean describes the method I used in a different thread. Also big thanks to him! :) Here is how I solved my problem: If a collision is registered by my SAT-method, only fire the collision-event on my character if there are no neighbouring solid tiles in the direction of the returned minimum translation vector. I'm developing my first tile-based 2D-game with Javascript. To learn the basics, I decided to write my own "game engine". I have successfully implemented collision detection using the separating axis theorem, but I've run into a problem that I can't quite wrap my head around. If I press the [up] and [left] arrow-keys simultaneously, my character moves diagonally towards the upper left. If he hits a horizontal wall, he'll just keep moving in x-direction. The same goes for [up] and [left] as well as downward-diagonal movements, it works as intended: http://i.stack.imgur.com/aiZjI.png Diagonal movement works fine for horizontal walls, for both left and right-movement However: this does not work for vertical walls. Instead of keeping movement in y-direction, he'll just stop as soon as he "enters" a new tile on the y-axis. So for some reason SAT thinks my character is colliding vertically with tiles from vertical walls: http://i.stack.imgur.com/XBEKR.png My character stops because he thinks that he is colliding vertically with tiles from the wall on the right. This only occurs, when: Moving into top-right direction towards the right wall Moving into top-left direction towards the left wall Bottom-right and bottom-left movement work: the character keeps moving in y-direction as intended. Is this inherited from the way SAT works or is there a problem with my implementation? What can I do to solve my problem? Oh yeah, my character is displayed as a circle but he's actually a rectangular polygon for the collision detection. Thank you very much for your help.

• Google reader Keyboard shortcuts not working in Firefox 3.6

  I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 which comes with Firefox 3.6.3. Now Google reader some keyboard shortcuts stopped working, The j/k keys are ok, but 'v', 'Shift+x' and others don't work and start the Search As You type functionality I've always used. The Javascript console only shows this warning: Warning: The 'charCode' property of a keyup event should not be used. The value is meaningless. My VPS provider provides these OS: Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Ubuntu 8.04 LTS 64-bit Ubuntu 9.10 Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit Debian 5.0 Gentoo Gentoo 64-bit Ubuntu 8.04 LTS + Ruby on rails I don't know what these are, however I have heard about Ubuntu alot, and know there is alot of information about it on the Internet. Will it make any difference which one I chose? I plan on running a classifieds website, which uses PHP, MySql, Java (for Solr) and the usual standard stuff (HTML, javascript...). Which should I chose? And what is the next step after chosing one? Thanks

• File not updating in symlink'd folder in IIS

  I have the following setup: Site1/Shared/ - Physical folder Site2/Shared/ - symlink using mklink to Site1/Shared I've updated a javascript file in Site1/Shared/scripts, and the change is being reflected on Site1. However, the change is not being reflected through IIS on Site2. When I open Site1/Shared/scripts/common.js and Site2/Shared/scripts/common.js, they match exactly. But when I view the files through Safari, Firefox, Chrome, IE, from any machine (even machines that have never visited the sites), the change is not reflected on Site2. Here are URLs to the files to review: Site 1: http://www.landsofamerica.com/shared/scripts/common.js Site 2: http://www.landsoftexas.com/shared/scripts/common.js These files look exactly the same when logged onto the server, and the shared folder under landsoftexas.com is a symlink created using mklink to the shared folder under landsofamerica.com. Any idea what might be causing IIS to serve the wrong file?

  What things should a programmer implementing the technical details of a web site address before making the site public? If Jeff Atwood can forget about HttpOnly cookies, sitemaps, and cross-site request forgeries all in the same site, what important thing could I be forgetting as well? I'm thinking about this from a web developer's perspective, such that someone else is creating the actual design and content for the site. So while usability and content may be more important than the platform, you the programmer have little say in that. What you do need to worry about is that your implementation of the platform is stable, performs well, is secure, and meets any other business goals (like not cost too much, take too long to build, and rank as well with Google as the content supports). Think of this from the perspective of a developer who's done some work for intranet-type applications in a fairly trusted environment, and is about to have his first shot and putting out a potentially popular site for the entire big bad world wide web. Also: I'm looking for something more specific than just a vague "web standards" response. I mean, HTML, JavaScript, and CSS over HTTP are pretty much a given, especially when I've already specified that you're a professional web developer. So going beyond that, Which standards? • Groovy/Grails course content

  Hi, Some Java developers have asked if I could give them a 2-day primer on Grails development. I'm assuming they're familiar with: Java language and libraries Java web development, e.g. Servlets, JSPs Spring Hibernate Client-side development, CSS, HTML, JavaScript I'm further assuming they have no experience with Groovy or Grails. AFAIK, the app that they'll be building is a new project, so there's no need to cover topics like using GORM with a legacy database. I'm trying to decide how I should structure the course, e.g. what topics to cover and how much time to spend on each. I reckon about 1/2 - 3/4 days on Groovy and the rest of the time on Grails would be adequate. I'll probably use the Groovy console to demonstrate the Groovy language concepts and a simple Grails app for explaining the conventions and structure of a Grails project. If anyone has a list of Groovy/Grails topics that I should cover, or even an outline of a similar course that they've given/taken, I'd be very grateful. Naturally, I will credit for any resources that I use during the course.

• Semantic Versioning and splitting apart a library, providing a bundled build

  I've got a nice, fairly popular JavaScript library that is following Semantic Versioning. The current library has a few dependency libraries, which are available either as separate downloads or as part of a single bundled download. I see a need to head down this path further. I want to extract additional, smaller libraries out of the one larger library. Each of these extracted libraries would be available as separate files, or inside of the one bundled build, again. If I go down this path of extracting the libraries, and providing a bundled version of the final code, does this require a full version change in semantic versioning? Would I have to bump from 1.x to 2.x? My first thought it no: I will not change any public API, so I don't have to change the major version number. But then I wonder... well, I am restructuring a lot of things, even though the final API for the bundled version would be the same. Is there a clear answer from semver on something like this? Do I need to bump first, second or third dot? Or something else?

• Using Quickly for text-heavy app

  I am trying to create a small app that displays documentation. When it is run, the application window will display a main menu with buttons labeled 'Document 1', 'Document 2', etc. If a user clicks on one of those buttons, the text from the corresponding document will be displayed in the window. Very basic. The text documents range in length from 1000 to 5000 words, and they need basic formatting (bold, italic, maybe one or two font choices). My question is this: what is the best way to store and display long blocks of formatted text, using Quickly? There seems to be a few options: (1) I could load the text blocks into long python strings, (2) I could load the text from text files, or (3) I could somehow copy and paste the formatted text into Glade. In the first two options, I'm not sure how I would format the text (add italic and bold, for instance) once it was loaded. I have experience with PHP/MySQL/HTML/CSS/Javascript, but I'm new to Python. Any help would be appreciated.

  I started learning django about a month ago. I have an intermediate C, Java programming experience. I read the first 8 chapters of the django book . Afterwards, I picked up Practical Django Projects by James Bennett and did the first two projects: CMS & Web Blog. Although, I started getting lost when he got to the generic views part. I know that's important but I'm not sure how important that is when trying to implement a project. Anyway, I have a project in mind that I'd like to start; however, I'm nervous as to where to begin. I'm overwhelmed with the number of things that I'd like my project to do but no knowledge or minimal knowledge as to how e.g. how do i implement css and javascript in my project. Moreover, I am aware that some django packages exists to ease development but I don't know if I should use them or not. Anyway, I apologize for my length message. I just want some advice/encouragement. I have a project in mind but do you think I need to read more materials/tutorials or is it smart to just start working on my project based on the minimal knowledge i've gained from those books? Any information that can be provided is much appreciated. I really want to get good at this but I just need some direction.

Basically, I thought that if one of my static files in my container was updated, the cache in my reverse proxy would be invalidated and my browser would get the new version of the file when it requests it... But I now have the sentiment I misunderstood many things. Of all things, I now wonder how nginx on the server can know about a file in the container has changed? I have seen a directive proxy_header_pass (or something alike), should I use this to let the nginx instance from the container somehow inform the one in Proxmox about updated files? Is this expectation just a dream, or can I do it with nginx on my current architecture?

• Pausing and Resuming the jQuery / ASP.NET News Ticker

  Many websites display a news ticker of one sort or another. A news ticker is a user interface element that displays a subset of a list of items, cycling through them one at a time after a set interval. In December 2010 I wrote an article titled Use jQuery and ASP.NET to Build a News Ticker that explored how to create your own news ticker widget using jQuery and ASP.NET. The news ticker's content is defined as an unordered list (<ul>) where each list item (<li>) represents a news headline. Once the ticker's content is defined, having it cycle through the head lines is as simple as calling the JavaScript function startTicker(id, numberToShow, duration), which begins cycling the headlines in the unordered list with the specified id, showing numberToShow headlines at a time and cycling to the next headline every duration number of milliseconds. This installment shows how to enhance the news ticker to enable pausing and resuming. With these enhancements, the ticker can be configured to automatically pause rotating its headlines when the user mouses over it, and to resume rotating them once the user mouses out. Similarly, with a bit of additional markup and script you can add pause and play buttons to a ticker, allowing a user to start and stop the ticker by clicking an image or button.
