  • Redirect output of shell script to a file

    I'm trying to redirect the output of my script and it needs to be called inside the script. filename=uname -a filename="$filename" date 2>&1 | tee $filename".txt" That is what I have so far, but it's obviously wrong. I don't know too much SH scripting, so help is appreciated -Alex

  • .NET Efficient way to generate WORD Doc - Server Side

    Hello, .NET 4.0 I am looking for the easiest way to generate a Word document on our server. Limitations : Server side I don't want to install word on the server Data source is XML I tried to generate a DOCX with XSLT which is fast and easy but the only way I could find to validate the generated document is to open it with Word and the only error I get when the document is not valid is "Error while opening document". Not very useful. Any ideas? Thanks, Alex

  • current page highlights on child pages

    Im trying to achieve current page highlights on wordpress similar to this site Alex Soth. I'm very nearly there with my css. At present i have current page highlights on pages, ie. home,calendar, projects. However when it come to current page highlights on child pages i have a problem. the indented child page list appears on hover when selecting a child page, but after page selection the menu reverts back to the standard pages menu with no visible child menus? unlike the link to the Alex Soth site where the extended menu stays and current page is highlighted I know that the answer will be a simple piece of css involving current_page_item and possible position:relative to obtain the menu staying visible after selection. But i can for the life of me work it out.   • Android SDK and AVD Manager installation

Have tried a couple times downloading the Android SDK and ADT plugin for Eclipse In the Android SDK and AVD manager load fine but will not load any available packages. Show: - Android Repository --"Some packages were found but are not compatible updates" In the installed it shows 1.5 to 2.3 SDK platforms. How to I get them available. Appreciate help. Thanks, Alex

    Hi all I'm trying to write a function that could receive it's second arg a name of a function. In order to validate function's name (that will be used in an eval statement) I use function_exists such as: if(function_exists($type)){ $toEval= $type.'(\''.$file.'\');'; }else{ But if the arg sent is include or require (with 'once' variations) this code fails (function_exists returns false).     How would you use regex to write functions to do the following: Replace lowercase 'a' with uppercase and vice versa Where words are separated by whitespaces and > and < are special markers, replace >word with word< and vice versa Replace postincrement (i++;) with preincrement (++i;) and vice versa. Variable names are [a-z]+. Input is just a bunch of these statements. Bonus: also do decrement. Also interested in solutions in other flavors. Note: this is NOT a homework question.   • Algorithms to find longest common prefix in a sliding window.

    Hi, I have written a Lempel Ziv compressor and decompressor. I am seeking to improve the time to search the dictionary for a phrase. I have considered K-M-P and Boyer-Moore, but I think an algorithm that adapts to changes in the dictionary would be faster. I've been reading that binary search trees (AVL or with splays) improve the performance of compression time considerably. What I fail to understand is how to bootstrap the binary search tree and insert/remove data. I'm not actually quite sure the significance of each node in the binary search. I am searching for phrases so will each character be considered a node? Also how and what is inserted/removed from the search tree as new data enters the dictionary and old data is removed? The binary search tree sounds like a good payoff since it can adapt to the dictionary, but I'm just not quite sure of how it's used.

  • String Occurance Counting Algorithm

    Hello, I am curious what is the most efficient algorithm (or commonly used) to count the number of occurances of a string in a chunck of text. From what I read, Boyer–Moore string search algorithm is the standard for string search but I am not sure if counting occurance in an efficient way would be same as searching a string. In python this is what I want: text_chunck = "one two three four one five six one" occurance_count(text_chunck, "one") # gives 3. Regards EDIT: It seems like python str.count serves me such method however I am not able to find what algorithm it uses.

  • How to select the first ocurrence in the auto-completion menu by pressing Enter?

    Every time there's is a pop up menu. I select the first occurrence and press enter but nothing happens (the word is not completed with he selected occurrence). The only way is to press Tab until you reach the term for a second time. Is there a way of selecting the first occurrence pressing Enter (or other Vim hotkey)?   • Microsoft Templates included in jQuery 1.5!

    When I joined the ASP.NET team as the Program Manager for Ajax, the ASP.NET team was working on releasing a new version of the Microsoft Ajax Library. This new version of the Microsoft Ajax Library had several really innovative and unique features such as support for client templates, client data-binding, script dependency management, and globalization. However, we kept hearing the message that our customers wanted to use jQuery when building ASP.NET applications. Therefore, about ten months ago, we decided to pursue a risky strategy. Scott Guthrie sent me to Cambridge to meet with John Resig – the creator of jQuery and leader of the jQuery project – to find out whether Microsoft and jQuery could work together. We wanted to find out whether the jQuery project would be open to allowing Microsoft to contribute the innovative features that we were developing for the Microsoft Ajax Library -- such as client templates and client data-binding -- to the jQuery library. Fortunately, the Cambridge meeting with Resig went well. John Resig was very open to accepting contributions to the jQuery library. Over the next few months, we worked out a process for Microsoft to contribute new features to the open-source jQuery project. Resig and Guthrie appeared on stage at the MIX10 conference to announce that Microsoft would be contributing features to jQuery. It has been a long journey, but I am happy to report success. Today, Microsoft and the jQuery project have announced that three plugins developed by developers on the ASP.NET team – the jQuery Templates, jQuery Data Link, and jQuery Globalization plugins – have been accepted as official jQuery plugins. In addition, the jQuery Templates plugin will be integrated into jQuery 1.5 which is the next major release of jQuery.   • The best Bar on the globe is ... in Seoul/Korea

    As you know already sometimes I write about things which really don't have to do anything with a database upgrade. So if you are looking for tips and tricks and articles about that topic please stop reading now Actually I'm not a lets-go-to-a-bar person. I enjoy good food and a fine dessert wine afterwards. But last week in Seoul/Korea Ryan, our local host, did ask us after a wonderful dinner at a Korean Barbecue place if we'd like to visit a bar. I was really tired as I flew into Seoul overnight from Sunday to Monday arriving Monday early morning, getting shower, breakfast - and then a full day of very good and productive customer meetings. But one thing Ryan mentioned catched my immediate attention: The owner of the bar collects records and has a huge tube amp stereo system - and you can ask him to play your favorite songs. The bar is called "Peter, Paul and Mary" - honestly not my favorite style of music. And I even coulnd't find a webpage or an address - only that little piece of information on Facebook. But after stepping down the stairs to the cellar my eyes almost poped out of my head. This is the audio system: Enourmus huge corner horn loudspeakers from Western Electric. Pretty old I'd suppose but delivering an incredible present dynamics into the room. And plenty of tube equipment from Jadis, NSA Labs and Shindo Laboratories Western Electric 300B Limited amps from Tokyo. And the owner (I was so amazed I had simply forgotten to ask for his name) collects records since 40 years. And we had many wishes that night. Actually when we did enter Peter, Paul and Mary he played an old Helloween song. That must have been destiny. A German entering a bar in Korea and the owner is playing an old song by one of Germany's best heavy metal bands ever. And it went on with the Doors, Rainbow's Stargazer, Scorpions, later Deep Purple's Perfect Strangers, a bit of Santana, Carly Simon, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie ...Ronnie James Dio's Holy Diver, Gary Moore, Peter Gabriel's San Jacinto ... and many many more great songs ... Of course we were the last guests leaving the place at 2am in the morning - and I've never ever had a better night in a bar before ... I could have stayed days listening to so many records  ...   • Harnessing Business Events for Predictive Decision Making - part 1 / 3

    Businesses have long relied on data mining to elicit patterns and forecast future demand and supply trends. Improvements in computing hardware, specifically storage and compute capacity, have significantly enhanced the ability to store and analyze mountains of data in ever shrinking time-frames. Nevertheless, the reality is that data growth is outpacing storage capacity by a factor of two and computing power is still very much bounded by Moore's Law, doubling only every 18 months.Faced with this data explosion, businesses are exploring means to develop human brain-like capabilities in their decision systems (including BI and Analytics) to make sense of the data storm, in other words business events, in real-time and respond pro-actively rather than re-actively. It is more like having a little bit of the right information just a little bit before hand than having all of the right information after the fact. To appreciate this thought better let's first understand the workings of the human brain.Neuroscience research has revealed that the human brain is predictive in nature and that talent is nothing more than exceptional predictive ability. The cerebral-cortex, part of the human brain responsible for cognition, thought, language etc., comprises of five layers. The lowest layer in the hierarchy is responsible for sensory perception i.e. discrete, detail-oriented tasks whereas each of the above layers increasingly focused on assembling higher-order conceptual models. Information flows both up and down the layered memory hierarchy. This allows the conceptual mental-models to be refined over-time through experience and repetition. Secondly, and more importantly, the top-layers are able to prime the lower layers to anticipate certain events based on the existing mental-models thereby giving the brain a predictive ability. In a way the human brain develops a "memory of the future", some sort of an anticipatory thinking which let's it predict based on occurrence of events in real-time. A higher order of predictive ability stems from being able to recognize the lack of certain events. For instance, it is one thing to recognize the beats in a music track and another to detect beats that were missed, which involves a higher order predictive ability.Existing decision systems analyze historical data to identify patterns and use statistical forecasting techniques to drive planning. They are similar to the human-brain in that they employ business rules very much like mental-models to chunk and classify information. However unlike the human brain existing decision systems are unable to evolve these rules automatically (AI still best suited for highly specific tasks) and  predict the future based on real-time business events. Mistake me not,  existing decision systems remain vital to driving long-term and broader business planning. For instance, a telco will still rely on BI and Analytics software to plan promotions and optimize inventory but tap into business events enabled predictive insight to identify specifically which customers are likely to churn and engage with them pro-actively. In the next post, i will depict the technology components that enable businesses to harness real-time events and drive predictive decision making.

  • Why doesn't Mail.app properly thread Microsoft Outlook replies?

    I use Mail.app 3.6 (on 10.5 Leopard), and I always use plain-text email. Normally, when I receive an email reply from practically anyone, it looks like this (test message sent from Mail.app, replied from Hotmail, replied from Google Apps): Needless to say, I quite like this threading, and it keeps everything very visually-organized. However, when I receive a plain-text email reply from people on Microsoft Outlook (tested with Outlook 2003 & 2007), it isn't threaded like the image. Instead, it appears as below, without being threaded nicely. My reply to the message. -----Original Message----- From: Tyson Moore [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: [Date] To: [Receiver] Subject: Test Original message. Through looking at the source of my original message, it appears as though every time the message is quoted, less-than signs (<) are inserted before every line in the reply. I am assuming this is what triggers the quoting behaviour exhibited by Mail.app, but I'm no expert. My question: is this a Mail.app limitation in not recognizing the -----Original Message----- line put in by Outlook, or an Outlook problem not inserting > before every line in a reply (or both)?

    If you're part of the lucky bunch attending this week's sold-out QCon San Francisco conference at Westin San Francisco Market Street, I'd like to bring several sessions to your attention. On Wednesday Nov 16, Alex Buckley, specification lead for the Java Language and the Java Virtual Machine at Oracle, will present Java 7 and 8: Where We've Been, Where We're Going, part of the Why is Java still sexy? track. The session begins at 10:35 a.m. in the Olympic room. On Thursday Nov 17, Tyler Jewell, VP Product Management for Oracle's Platform as a Service, will participate in the Performance and Scalability Panel moderated by InfoQ founder and QCon SF Program Committee Member Floyd Marinescu. That panel, part of the Performance and Scalability Solutions track, begins at 10:35 a.m. in the Olympic room. Following that panel discussion, Tyler will fly solo with a presentation on Java EE 7: Developing for the Cloud, also part of the Performance and Scalability Solutions track.   • Announcing Berkeley DB Java Edition Major Release

    Berkeley DB Java Edition 5.0 was just released. There are a number of new features, enhancements, and options in there that our users have been asking for. Chief among them is a new class called DiskOrderedCursor, which greatly increases performance of systems using spinning platter magnetic hard drives. A number of users expressed interest in this feature, including Alex Feinberg of LinkedIn. Berkeley DB Java Edition is part of Project Voldemort, a distributed key/value database used by LinkedIn. There have been many other improvements and optimizations. Concurrency is significantly improved, as is the performance of update and delete operations. New and interesting methods include Environment.preload, which allows multiple databases to be preloaded simultaneously. New Cursor methods enable for more effective searching through the database. We continue to enhance Berkeley DB Java Edition’s High Availability as well. One new feature is the ability to open a replicated node read-only when the master is unavailable. This can allow critical systems to continue offering some functionality, even during a network or master node failure. There’s a lot more in release 5.0.
