• When booting from grub2 menu, why does only the Primary OS that installed the boot loader get the nice splash?

  It isn't a real problem, but if there is a way to fix it, I would like to. I have several Ubuntu installations on one computer, but on boot and shutdown, only the primary installation that grub was installed to the MBR from has a nice resolution and boot splash. All the other installations boot splash's are a blinking cursor on a black screen, and the resolution is ugly, on boot as well as shutdown. Why is this? and Can I make it so that my Ubuntu 12.04 have a nice boot again, like my 12.10 now does (because its grub wrote over MBR)?

• Common light map practices

  My scene consists of individual meshes. At the moment each mesh has its associated light map texture, I was able to implement the light mapping using these many small textures. 1) Of course, I want to create an atlas, but how do you split atlases to pages, I mean do you group the lm's of objects that are close to each other, and load light maps on the fly if scene is expected to be big. 2) the 3d authoring software provides automatic uv coordinates for each mesh in the scene, but there are empty areas in the texel space, so if I scale the texture polygons the texel density of each face wil not match other meshes, if I create atlas like that there will be varying lm resolution, how do you solve this, just leave it as it is, or ignore resolution ? Actually these questions also applies to other non tiled maps.

• Can I set up a hostname alias that is only active in a specific network?

  I have a small ARM box running ownCloud in my house, and a domain bound to my DSL router with Dynamic DNS. This works well as I can configure the ownCloud client to use the domain name, which works both in the house and when I'm on the road. However, at home I would like to let my laptop and my server talk to each other directly on the local network, rather than as if they were talking over the Internet (including DNS resolution for my domain name, routing all traffic through the DSL machinery etc.). I know that I can set a hostname alias for my domain in /etc/hosts - the problem is that I want this alias to only be active when I'm in the home network, while in all other cases DNS resolution should be used as normal. Is this possible?

• 1080p on TV not working

  I am trying to connect my laptop (Samsung Series 5 Ultrabook) to my TV (Toshiba WLT66/67 Series) and get it to output to the TV at 1080i (so basically 1920x1080) through HDMI The issue I have is that in 'Displays' the highest resolution that it gives the monitor is 1280x768, however I know that the TV can output at 1920x1080 at 30Hz as when I use Windows 7 it allows me to do this. • Problem installing NVIDIA-Linux-x86-302.07.run in 12.04

  I have a catch 22 problem in trying to install this driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-302.07.run) to set my screen to its native resolution of 1280x1024 (hpL1906). Problem is that in order to install this driver, I need to stop the XServer but when I do this (sudo service lightdm stop), my screen goes blank and displays the message - Out of Range 1280X1024 need to reset (or something similar) - and I can go no further. So, I cannot install NVIDIA-Linux-x86-302.07.run without stopping lightdm but when I do so, I can no longer see anything on the screen or go further to install the driver that would let me adjust the resolution. Any advice on getting out of this loop would be greatly appreciated.

  I am completely new to Ubuntu and now running into so many problems regarding my display. I will be so grateful to the community to help me out and keep me loving Ubuntu. When I run lspci | grep VGA I get the following output 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV380 [Radeon X600 (PCIE)] I am not sure if it means the driver is installed. Now the problem is I can not change the resolution like I can do in windows. I wanted to use dual monitor but it can not detect dual monitor. The monitor option in the preference shows 'Unknown' I tried to use a VGA switch for my ps3 and computer, but the computer is stuck with 1024x768 resolution. I have been trying for last three days, couldn't figure out anything. Now asking for you wisdom to get my display work. Regards, MMRAHMAN

  I have created a blog on Tumblr a few days ago. Looking over the statistics, it seems that Tumblr itself is visiting my website, using different browsers. What is this supposed to mean? Are these real visitors or is it a Tumblr bot? One example: Browser: Chrome 32.0 OS: Win8 Resolution: 1024x768 Location: New York, United States IP Address: Tumblr (66.6.40.249) Referring URL: (No referring link) Other browsers used include: Chrome 20.0.1090.0 Firefox 21 Opera 12.14 Chrome 15.0.861.0 Chrome 32.0.1667.0 Internet Explorer 6 Internet Explorer 9 Opera 12 Opera 12.02 They all use the same screen resolution (1024x768) and have no referrer. The flash version is not set, but they do support javascript. Unfortunately, I don't have the full user agent string.

• Ubuntu 10.10 screen goes nuts and unreadable

  Running Ubuntu 10.10 in its own partition, also have Oracle Virtualbox 4 with Windows XP. Because i previously had a problem with a dark screen when i let the laptop on and i didn't use it for a long while i had set Power settings to Never sleep, never let the Display sleep. Monitor on install set to Laptop resolution 1400 by 1050, refresh rate 60 Hz, rotation Normal. The problem was when the computer was left on and i returned after about an hour, the screen was unreadable, similar to what used to happen to graphics cards before multisync became normal. So it appears as though the graphics card was asked to use a resolution it couldn't handle and went nuts. I had to power off the system, on restart everything was fine. Thanks for any suggestions.   my specs intel mb dh67cl corsair 4gb ram nvidia 560ti gtx i5 processor dell 22" monitor 1920x1080 firstly, i began using ubuntu last year. now im in love with it. just one minor detail i dont like is that the bootscreen changed just after the first boot. now im using 12.04.1. i will explain how it happened. first i installed ubuntu via windows. so it booted for the first time and life was beautiful. the resolution was 1920x1080. then i installed the nvidia drivers, all the updates and codecs for the medias. now the ubuntu bootscreen downscaled to a lower resolution. i tried searching for answers, but nothing was for ubuntu 12.04.1. since im a newbie, i didnt want to take any chances. i need help. i like the bootscreen.

I have a problem with my video card, I have a video card GeForce GTS 450 and a TV Samsung Series 4 43 "and I have it connected to my video card via a cable Mini HDMI to the TV and everything works perfectly, I can instarlar Ubuntu 12.04 (64bits) perfectly, but the problem when I want to change the screen resolution but try to change the driver I install that comes directly from the Nvidia page gave me an error at the end. maximum resolution I presents is 1024x 768 and is supposed to introduce more resolutions and that is connected to the HDMI. • Why are Virtual Terminal Blank using NVIDIA propietary drivers?

  When using nouveau the fps are low compared to nvidia closed driver. But when booting, nvidia drivers show the ubuntu splash screen in a 900x800 resolution like nvidia its not loaded yet. When nouveau it splash in a decent resolution. The problem I'm having since karmic koala is I cant switch to virtual terminals with nvidia closed drivers. By the way, is the same PC: VAIO VPCCW19FX with NVIDIA G210M, now with precise amd64. In there, I learned that: I should avoid too high a volume, to prevent clipping I should avoid too low a volume, to prevent loss of resolution The question now is: What is too high a volume? What is too low? I am setting the volume via the GUI for sound config. It has an unamplified setting, a 100% setting, and volumes beyond 100%. After 100%, is there still resolution loss? How can I tell if there is clipping going on (given that my recording program is the non-GUI ffmpeg)?

• 12.04 precise HDMI not working on ATI Radeon

  This is precisely a 12.04 HDMI output problem, because it works for 11.10 - everything else are the same, only the OS version is different. The symptom is that on my HDMI output TV screen, it always shows Unsupported resolution even after setting it to the resolution that works on Ubuntu 11.10 (via gnome-control-center, in which it detects my TV just fine), I still don't see any output on TV. The audio is not working either. I think it is 12.04's problem, because if I boot into Ubuntu 11.10, and everything else remain the same, HDMI output (video & audio) work just fine. 12.04 is a freshly installed, just the vanilla Ubuntu HD installation. How should I nailed down / fix the problem?

• Building a VS2010 solution from TFS2008

  I have a TFS 2008 Build Agent that has been used to build .Net 3.5 applications. I now have a .Net 4.0 app which i want to compile on the same build agent. I have ensured that MSBuild 4.0 is installed on there and all the required componentry is also installed, but i am getting the following MSB4062 error when building: [Any CPU/Release] C:\Program Files\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\WebApplications\Microsoft.WebApplication.targets(244,5): error MSB4062: The "Microsoft.WebApplication.Build.Tasks.GetSilverlightItemsFromProperty" task could not be loaded from the assembly C:\Program Files\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\WebApplications\Microsoft.WebApplication.Build.Tasks.dll. • SGEN doesn't work after upgrading from VS2008 to VS2010

  I just recently upgraded a VS2008/.NET 3.5 SP1 project to VS2010 and .NET 4. I have a post-build event which calls SGEN to generate the XmlSerializers assembly. Whenever I try to run it I get the following error. "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\bin\sgen.exe" /debug /force /verbose /c:"platform:x86" "C:\path\to\SomeAssembly.dll" Microsoft (R) Xml Serialization support utility [Microsoft (R) .NET Framework, Version 2.0.50727.3038] Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. • FileNotFoundException when running WiX CustomAction with COMAdmin interop

  I am trying to create a WiX custom action which will allow me to shutdown and clear down a COM+ package as part of an upgrade installation, or create and configure a new COM+ package as part of the initial installation. I previously had this running as a CustomAction within a standard Visual Studio MSI but this only allows the custom action to be executed after the files have been copied - which will fail as the package will still be running. The COMAdmin.dll has been added as a reference to the CustomAction project and is set CopyLocal=true. In the bin folder for the custom action project the Interop.COMAdmin.dll is present. The answer to this question seems to suggest that it should work. • C# IsolatedStorage Not Working

  I am building a C# .NET (VS2010) IE8 add-on application but am having some trouble saving data using IsolatedStorage. No exceptions occur but, after writing the data, when I try to read the contents back it is blank, and I can find no evidence that it actually saved.   I'm trying to build a Windows Workflow (WF) project using NAnt, but it doesn;t seem to be able to build the ".xoml" and ".rules" files. • Unit Testing using InternalsVisibleToAttribute requires compiling with /out:filename.ext?

  In my most recent question: Unit Testing Best Practice? / C# InternalsVisibleTo() attribute for VBNET 2.0 while testing?, I was asking about InternalsVisibleToAttribute. I have read the documentation on how to use it, and everything is fine and understood. However, I can't instantiate my class Groupe from my Testing project. I want to be able to instantiate my internal class in my wrapper assembly, from my testing assembly. Any help is appreciated! EDIT #1 Here's the compile-time error I get when I do try to instantiate my type: Erreur 2 'Carra.Exemples.Blocs.ActiveDirectory.Groupe' n'est pas accessible dans ce contexte, car il est 'Private'.   I am trying to connect to a remote sql database and simply run the "select @@servername" query in Powershell. I'm trying to do this without using integrated security. I've been struggling with "get-credential" and "invoke-sqlcmd", only to find (I think), that you can't pass the password from "get-credential" to another Powershell cmdlets.   I am learning about best practices in MVC2 and I am knocking off a copy of the "Who Can Help Me" project (http://whocanhelpme.codeplex.com/) off Codeplex. In it, they use Castle Windsor for their DI container. One "learning" task I am trying to do is convert this subsystem in this project to use StructureMap. Basically, at Application_Start(), the code news up a Windsor container.
