• Unboxing object containing a value which is known to be assignable to an integer variable

  If I have an object instance and I know it is actually a boxed integer, then I can simply cast it back to int like this: object o = GetSomethingByName("foo"); int i = (int)o; However, I don't actually know that the value is an integer. I only know that it can be assigned to an integer. For example, it could be a byte, and the above code would throw InvalidCastException in that case. Instead I would have to do this: object o = GetSomethingByName("foo"); int i = (int)(byte)o; The value could also be a short, or something else which can be assigned to an int. How do I generalize my code to handle all those cases (without handling each possibility separately)?

  I have a RESTful web service. For implementation using JAX-RS (Jersey). Have the following method: public void foo (@PathParam ("name") String uuid) { ... } I need to do validation of input parameters. And if data invalid throw WebApplicationException. I added my custom annotation CheckUuid (extends ): public void foo (@PathParam ("name") @CheckUuid String uuid) { ... } Is it possible to do validation using annotations on a stage when the method chosen, but not yet called? For example using PreProcessInterceptor?

• Appengine backreferences - need composite index?

  I have a query that is very recently starting to throw: "The built-in indices are not efficient enough for this query and your data. Please add a composite index for this query." I checked the line on which this exception is being thrown, and the problem query is this one: count = self.vote_set.filter("direction =", 1).count() This is literally a one-filter operation using appengine's built-in backreferences. I have no idea how to optimize this query...anyone have any suggestions? I tried to add this index: - kind: Vote properties: - name: direction direction: desc - kind: Vote properties: - name: direction And I got a message (obviously) saying this was an unnecessary index. • Need help on how to setup package structure and project

  I am new to Java and am making a license generator. This is my current setup. com.example.licensegenerator.client (used by the client application) :LicenseLoader (no Main method) :LicenseDownloader (no Main method) com.example.licensegenerator.server.keys (used by the server) :ProductKeyGenerator(Main method) com.example.licensegenerator.server.license (used on the server also) :LicenseGenerator(Main method) com.example.licensegenerator.lib (Shared classes between client and server) :Contants (no main) Now I have a few questions. Is it OK to have multiple Main() methods in a single project? Will I be able to compile them to different .jar files? (In this case I need two different jars for the server) Is there a better way to setup the packages? And a totally unrelated question, with exceptions, is it better to handle them right then and there or throw them and let the main method catch them all (the program cannot recover if an error occurs)

• Problem compiling mod_wsgi for python2.6 on Cent OS 5.3

  I am running a website on CentOS 5.3. I understand centos will break if the default python 2.4 is upgraded. I followed this site (http://www.question-defense.com/2009/12/25/how-to-install-python-2-6-on-centos-5-without-breaking-yum) and got python 2.6 installed. Now if I run "python" it runs python2.4 and if I run "python26" it runs python2.6. I am trying to compile mod_wsgi-3.2. When it run ./configure it takes only python 2.4 environment. I have tried using the --with-python=/usr/bin/python26. That way, "make" command does not work. Can someone throw some light on this? Thanks in advance

• What to do when using Contract.Assert(true) and the method must return something?

  I have a bit of code with the following logic: //pseudo-code foreach (element in elementList) { if (element is whatever) return element; } } In theory, there is always one element that is whatever, so this method should pose no problems. In any case, I've put an assertion on the end of the method just to be sure: //pseudo-code foreach (element in elementList) { if (element is whatever) return element; } } Contract.Assert(true, "Invalid state!"); The problem is that as this method has to return something, and the compiler doesn't understand that the assertion will break the program execution. Before using Contracts, in these kind of situations, I used to throw an Exception, which solved the problem. How would you handle this with Contract.Assert()? Returning null or default(element_type) after the Contract.Assert() call knowing it will never be called and shutting up the compiler? Or is there any other more elegant way of doing this? Thanks

• Delete/move a UITableView row that's attached to a web service.

  Deleting or moving rows for a UITableView that is backed with local data (e.g., NSArray) is easy and instantaneous: Remove the value from the array. Call deleteRowsAtIndexPaths:withRowAnimation:. Profit! But my table view communicates with a web service, which means once the "Delete" button on that row gets tapped, I have to forward a request on to the server (via ASIHTTPRequest, of course), get the response, and then tell the table view to run its little delete-row animation, all with a few seconds of latency in between. From a high-level, what's the best way to do that? Throw some callback selector into ASIHTTPRequest's userInfo dictionary? KVO? Bonus points for some nice UI touch, like some kind of spinner on the soon-to-be-deleted cell.

• problem with exporting a customized form from dll

  I'm working on an application so i have write an dll which contain a form with some additional work and methods. so in the beginning of my program the thread launch this form (from my dll) to get some informations and then hide it and initialize some components and the application form and then show it. when the thread come the line where it define new instance of the exported form "MyForm inputform = new MyForm();" it throw an Exception called "Top-level control cannot be added to a control." so i don't know what to do ?!!. i tried to take the code of the form from the dll source code and put it in the main program and it works.... .but still i want to know what happen and what impede my application from run that form from my dll. thanks.

  Hi, I need to parse command line arguments in C. My arguments are basically int or float with default values and range constrains. I've started to implement something that look like this: option_float(float* out, int argc, char* argv, char* name, description, float default_val, int is_optional, float min_value, float max_value) which I call for example with: float* pct; option_float(pct, argc, argv, "pct", "My super percentage option", 50, 1, FALSE, 0, 100) however I don't want to reinvent the wheel ! My objective is to have error checking of range constrains, throw an error when the option is not optional and is not set. And generate the help message usually given by usage() function. The usage text would look like this: --pct My super percentage option (default : 50). Should be in [0, 100] I've started with getopt but it is too limited for what I want to do and I feel it still requires me to write too much code for a simple usecase like this. thanks

  Is there any good practice to avoid your jQuery code silently fail? For example: $('.this #is:my(complexSelector)').doSomething(); I know that every time this line get executed, the selector is intended to match at least one element, or certain amount of elements. Is there any standard or good way to validate that? I thought about something like this: var $matchedElements = $('.this #is:my(complexSelector)'); if ($matchedElements.length < 0) throw 'No matched elements'; $matchedElements.doSomething(); Also I think unit testing would be a valid option instead of messing the code. My question may be silly, but I wonder whether there is a better option than the things that I'm currently doing or not. Also, maybe I'm in the wrong way checking if any element match my selector. However, as the page continues growing, the selectors could stop matching some elements and pieces of functionality could stop working inadvertently.

  Hi, I have a Zen based VPS server that runs on a dual-core AMD Opteron 64-bit machine. I have some locally developed C++ based daemons that I would want to deploy in that machine. My local machine is an Intel core 2 duo laptop. Can I execute binaries compiled from source code on my machine directly on the above mentioned server? I am a newbie in this area.   This one has me stumped, despite the numerous posts on here. The scenario is a basic MVC(2) web application with simple CRUD operations. Whenever the edit form is submitted and the UpdateModel() called, an exception is thrown: System.Data.Linq.ForeignKeyReferenceAlreadyHasValueException was unhandled by user code This occurs against a DropDownList value which is a foreign key on the entity table. However, there is another DropDownList list on the form, representing another foreign key, which does not throw the error (unsurprisingly). Changing the property values manually inside the Edit Action: Recipe recipe = repository.GetRecipe(int.Parse(formValues["recipeid"])); recipe.CategoryId = Convert.ToInt32(formValues["CategoryId"].ToString()); recipe.Page = int.Parse(formValues["Page"].ToString()); recipe.PublicationId=Convert.ToInt32(formValues["PublicationId"].ToString()); Allows the CategoryId and Page properties to be updated, and then the error is thrown on the PublicationId. All of the referential integrity is checked an the same in the db and the dbml. Any light shed on this would be most welcome.

• android localization: Is it a good practice to have only needed resource to put in localized folder?

  Hi, My application has 4 languages in it. However only one module needs to be localized out of 5, This module has 4 layout files and some images, remaining files can be there in default layout folder and drawable folders. My question is : is it good practice to put only needed files in localization folders, if I leave other files in its respective folders and don't copy them in translation folders, does my application throw NullPointerException when my application runs in other language? and Does android market have any size limit? (Also being a BB developer,AFAIK they do not allow OTA, if the application size grows more than 3 mb) [In case i need to copy the layout and image files]. Note about NullPointerException : it throws in string if you omit some string in localization and application runs in that particular locale. Thanks

  Prior to .net 4.0, I implemented a solution using named data slots in System.Threading.Thread. Now, in .net 4.0, there is the idea of ThreadLocal. How does ThreadLocal usage compare to named data slots? Does the ThreadLocal value get inherited by children threads? Is the idea that ThreadLocal is a simplified version of using named data slots? An example of some stuff using named data slots follows. • Boost ASIO read X bytes synchroniously into a vector

  Hey, I've been attempting to write a client/server app with boost now, so far it sends and receives but I can't seem to just read X bytes into a vector. If I use the following code vector<uint8_t> buf; for (;;) { buf.resize(4); boost::system::error_code error; size_t len = socket.read_some(boost::asio::buffer(buf), error); if (error == boost::asio::error::eof) break; // Connection closed cleanly by peer. else if (error) throw boost::system::system_error(error); // Some other error. } And the packet is bigger then 4 bytes then it seems it keeps writing into those 4 bytes until the entire packet has been received, however I want it to fetch 4 bytes, then allow me to parse them, and then get the rest of the packet.
