• Best Guest OS for running freeswitch under Proxmox

  We have a lot of asterisk Systems running on dedicated machines and would like to use freeswitch to replace a number of them. One of the advantages of freeswitch is supposed to be that it is doing much better in a virtualized environment than asterisk is. However I can find very little information about people using it in Proxmox containers. I would like to know if anyone has seen any ready to run proxmox images that include freeswitch so we can test a number of things without having to deeply go into creating our own. Or at least a clue to which system images/distro images we can use to quickly get it installed not having to deal with too many dependency or different Linux version issues. Just to be clear: It should be for a more or less current Proxmox and current freeswitch. I am not looking forward to use the KVM mode but would consider it, if it is otherwise ready to run out of the box. I would rather use a real OpenVZ based container. Thanks for anyone helping!

• how to workaround glassfish 3.0.1 admin page slow startup?

  I've installed netbeans which comes with glassfish. i just got a book about glassfish and i wanted to try.the first surprise is the time it took to the admin page to load. i've found on serverfault and by googling that the server is making call to external resource on the network on online (not sure about that). but the adding of the java options didn't speed up the loading of the admin page. how to work around it? i've heard so good about glassfish that this leaves me perplexed. thanks for reading and for helping.

  I am using CentOs5 and postfix as an MTA for my server. My situation is as follows:- I have a mail server through which Php applications connect and send mails to the destination addresses. The problem is that the the application servers do not have spf/dkim record set up and my server which actually relays the mails to the network has spf/dkim records. So i want the mail sent by an application having a return address:[email protected] to change to [email protected]. r09.4reseller.org is hostname of my mail server. This i have done by generic mapping in postfix: smtp_generic_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/generic In /etc/postfix/generic: [email protected] [email protected] This is working as return address is changed to [email protected] when mail is sent. But when i try to sent mail on [email protected] I don't get mail on [email protected]. I have tried virtual mapping in postfix i.e by the file /etc/postfix/virtual but its not helping.

  I need to send hundreds of pictures via email. The size is reaching 100s of MBs .. which is certainly burden on network. WinRar, 7-Zip aren't helping .. Would you like to suggest any software which can carry out compression so that I can reduce the size and send it via email, and decompress it at the other end .. opensource or freeware are more preferred .. paid-versions are appreciated too Edit: I am seeking an alternative software for winrar and 7-zip which is more efficient in compressing .. but still not losing any data ..

  I didn't realise how world wide the users of the site are. I am based in England and will be helping out at an International Camp for young people in Finland this summer. I will be in charge off an game where we will have 1500 young people searcing for these CD's that will be hidden all over the camp site. They will have to find them and bringing them back to base one at a time. The young people will be divided into 5 teams and the team that brings back the most gets a prize. Hope this helps and allows me to put the reequest back on the site. I have tried to source them in Finland but have had no success.

• How to delete files quicker than rm -rf?

  Is there any way how to delete folder/files quicker than with command rm -rf? It seems my disc is filled with bilions of files (sessions of php5) which were not deleted in cron so I need to delete them manually but it takes hours and it is still not helping reducing the amount. Thank you. My command: rm -rf /var/lib/php5/* Tried also these commands: find /var/lib/php5 -name "sess_*" -exec rm {} \; And perl -e 'chdir "/var/lib/php5/" or die; opendir D, "."; while ($n = readdir D) { unlink $n }'

• creating cookbooks and roles with out chef-server

  I want to run: knife role create blah I use chef-solo and don't need knife to connect to a server. I just would like to run these commands for helping me prepopulate the files quickly. Everytime I run of these commands it attempts to connect to a server. This does not happen for knife cookbook create blah Double-ewe tee eff. Update: I've noticed this is the case for databags and environments as well. I've read elsewhere that knife is primarily intended for use with the chef-server API, but it seems ridiculous that something like this can't be done. It just needs to save the darn file.

• How can you configure the uPnP server on windows home server?

  I'm currently helping my parents with their home network set up while I'm home. I have a Synology NAS device which supports a uPnP server. I have a few MPEG-4 movies stored on the box, and simply enabling the uPnP server on the NAS streamed the video to some devices they have, including their Xbox 360 and Samsung television. They have a windows home server (HP MediaSmart.) I put one of the movies in the "Videos" folder of the device, and enabled sharing. It shows up on the television, but when played it produces an "unsupported file type" error. I have all of the transcoding settings disabled on the Synology device, so it should be streaming the same file. Is there some additional configuration I need to perform on the home server unit?

• FeedValidator & Feedburner get 404 when accessing wordpress RSS feeds when permalinks are enabled.

  I'm helping a friend set up a self-hosted Wordpress blog + feedburner and I'm seeing a problem with the feeds that I'm finding somewhat mysterious. Using the default permalink structure (e.g., ?p=123) everything works as expected; I can follow the feed in Google reader, navigate to it manually, and set it up in feedburner. However, once I switch away from the default permalink structure, feedburner and feedvalidator both report that accessing the feed is returning HTTP-404 and Google reader no longer shows new posts (I'm assuming for the same reason), but I can navigate to the feed using a browser. When I do that it appears as though nothing is wrong; there is a feed there and it contains all the posts I expect it to have. I've re-started the feedburner & reader set-up from the beginning after changing the link structure, so I don't think they're doing anything silly like looking at the feed at its old address. I've seen people with similar problems in various other places but there doesn't seem to be a good answer anywhere.

• Badwidth-Hogging Linux Server Causing Trouble

  We have a Linux server (2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu) that's misbehaving on a client site, gobbling up an entirely unacceptable percentage of the client's bandwidth, and we're trying to figure out what the heck it's doing. And the guy who had the sysadmin skillset has yet to be replaced. We're at a loss for what could be causing all that network traffic, and need to figure it out SOON. What log files should I be looking at to find this information? What analysis tools would you recommend for this task? Please note that I'm not looking for a tool that will allow me to analyze FUTURE traffic. The client is on the verge of shutting the machine off entirely; I need to figure out what it's been doing with the data I already have, if that's at all possible. My thanks in advance for helping a development monkey play sysadmin.

• "Input not Supported" on external monitor

  when it rains, it pours! Im helping a friend with his Dell Inspiron 1520. The hdd crashed and and top of that, the screen is cracked. I've replaced the hdd (SATA-5400), but the lcd replacement is only comin in a months time. I've tried to: hook the laptop up to an Acer 18.5" lcd monitor via VGA, boot up into Windows 7 installer, get to the Step-1 screen, Switch to external display (Function-F8) ...and get the "Input not supported" message on the Acer lcd. I know that this is a resolution problem, but cant for the life of me figure out how to solve this. I've also tried, hooking it up to my TV via Composite cables (got a VGA-Composite adaptor). Please could someone advise me what to do? -Thank u!

• Alien: .rpm -> .deb | Compability / Built per system?

  At the moment I'm playing a bit with alien (for OpenVZ packages on Debian) and was wondering myself about one question for which I was not able to find an answer anywhere. Therefor I thought it might be smart to ask here :) The question is... If I convert a .rpm to .deb on a system, how compatible is this .deb package? What do I mean? Will the .deb be working on other systems as well or is it per-system, e.g. that on every system the .deb package will be little different? That i386 and x86_64 are different is clear, so this doesn't need to be answered :) Examples that would be nice to know are for example: .deb built on Debian 6 64-bit - Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit (compatible?) .deb built on Debian 6 64-bit - Debian 5 64-bit (compatible?) etc. Thanks anyone reading this / helping me! • is it possible in this case to get two IPv6 networks to communicate over the IPv4 Internet?

  I have a setup of a laptop connected to a cellular IPv4 network (3G usb dongle) and PC connected to another IPv4/IPv6 network. Both have been configured to run as IPv6 routers and each has its IPv6 network. The laptop connects to the Internet via the 3G network with IPv4 address (private one and it is mostly changing) on one interface and has the other interface on AP mode providing its own private IPv6 network (2001:db8:444::/64). The PC connects to the Internet via the organization network with both public IPv4 and IPv6 addresses on one interface and has the other interface on AP mode providing its own private IPv6 network (2001:db8:222::/64). Both running Linux Ubuntu. Is it possible to get the two IPv6 network (2001:db8:222::/64 and 2001:db8:444::/64) to communicate over the IPv4 Internet? Is openvpn of any good in this case to get IPv6 traffic over IPv4-IPv4 tunnel? Thanks for helping in advance

• Remote access and local access same hostname

  Hi serverfault, I have a server in a clients network, seperated from theirs with a router/firewall, the intention is to have this server available through one hostname (example.com) My idea is to have (at least) a DNS server in the outside, to have outside (out of the clients' network) access the internal server. The problem would at that point be the internal client (PC A) My question: What would I have to do to make something like this work? Is it even possible or already done? The goal is to not have to change anything on either PC A or PC B, while both should access the same "internal server" while surfing to "example.com" Perhaps adding logic to the DNS server would work (Detect the external IP of internal client [PC A] is the same as the IP for example.com - Give the local IP as reply?)   I have Desktop with configuration Pentium 4,945 intel chipset board,dual booting with win 7 and ubuntu 10.10 (no graphics card) Recently i purchased Dell IN2020M 20" with native resolution of 1600x900 but my display allow maximum of 1024x768 because of this when i play any video in full screen mode it doesn't play smoothly or frames are refreshed jerkily I have tried updating my VGA driver but its doesn't helping me much. Is there any way to solve this problem ? 1if i want to replace monitor what maximum resolution should i buy ? 2if i want to upgrade(graphics card/motherboard) my desktop what is the minimum configuration to support the current system. • How do I get a listing of music files on a specific drive

  I'm helping someone setup thier IPOD, but they are using Windows 7, and I know XP. I don't see the music in the directory lising on his computer that I see on the IPOD. So I'm trying to search for all music files on e: In Windows XP, this is easy. Windows 7 has changed everything. I googled this, and I found to type "music" in the Windows search bar. This result in music "Libraries." Great. There's still not a listing of the files. I can search for *.wma, but that doesn't list all the music on the IPOD. There are many types of music files, how do I get a list of ALL music files on JUST drive e:? Again, on XP this was VERY easy.

• how to skip grub dual boot option menu entirely (without picking an OS to boot)

  I'd like to skip the entire Grub 2 interface, where I have to decide booting Linux or Windows im running linux ubuntu lastest version (14.04.1 LTS) and windows 8.1 both 64 bit versions. I've installed easyBCD software, which I want to use as (my only) boot manager. Issue: whenever I run my computer, I get grub interface to pick Linux or Windows, after that I get easyBCD interface where I have to pick linux or windows again. If both choices are the same, proper system boots, else I get thrown back to beggining (grub UI). I'd like to somehow delete / skip grub from appearing. TLDR title :) thank you for helping!

• Import EML emails into Outlook 2010 64-bit

  Evening everyone. I'm helping setup a small office network, where a number of old PC's are being replaced with new ones with a 64-bit copy of Outlook 2010. The old emails were stored in Windows Live Email, and were exported as .eml files (since we were replacing the machines). All the support I can find indicates that .eml files could simply be dragged-and-dropped into a folder in Outlook 2010, and it will import them correctly. However, it seems this is not the case in the 64-bit versioin, where dropping in .eml files results in a new message being created with these files as attachments. We can re-download the most of the emails off the server if need be, but there were user folders which were not on the server which we were hoping to import. Any advice would be fantastic at this point!

Googling isn't helping, I get that it's something with VM, but why is it suddenly showing up in /var/log/messages? Edit: I take it it's showing this because the number of pages it could free ("nr") is negative. Which is presumably a bad thing. I found patches for newer kernels that display a more useful message to this effect. Still not sure what this means though, or what I need to do about it.

• Forensics on Virtual Private servers [closed]

  So these days with talks about having hacked machines being used for malware spreading and botnet C&C, the one issue that is not clear to me is what do the law enforcement agencies do once they have identified a server as being a source or controller of attack/APT and that server is a VPS on my cluster/datacenter? Do they take away the entire machine? This option seems to have a lot of collateral damage associated with it, so I am not sure what happens and what are the best practices for system admins for helping law enforcement with its job while keeping our jobs!

• facebook keeps freezing Chrome and Windows

  Hi, everyone. I am a Windows 7 and Chrome user. Lately (since past few months) my Chrome has been freezing, taking down whole operating system with it, leaving resetting the computer the only choice. Recently I discovered that the issue was with facebook tabs, and when I close those tabs (if it's not too late!), I can save Chrome and Windows from a complete crash. This is very annoying. Is there a solution for this problem? Maybe uninstalling/reinstalling some plugins? Please help. Thanks. • Should we regularly schedule mysqlcheck (or databsae optimization)

  We run a forum with some 2 million posts and I've noticed that if left untouched the overhead in the mySQL (as listed in phpMyAdmin) can get quite large (hundreds of megabytes). I'm wondering if scheduling a normal mysqlcheck to optimize the tables is good practice? Any reason not to do it, say, once a week at an off-peak hour? There was a time over the summer where our site was constantly crashing because mysql was using up all resources. That's when I noticed the huge amount of overhead and optimized the database and haven't had any problems since then with stability. I figured if that was helping alleviate the issues, I should just setup a cron to automatically do this.

• What questions do I need to ask for a database sync?

  I am currently helping to implement an RFID inventory management system for my company. The software that we are locked into has been at best buggy and unreliable. The software provider is now rolling out a major release. My problem is that the new software release keeps a local database on each machine that then syncs to a master database online. According to the software company we cannot do a scaled rollout because of data corruption issues between the software releases. What questions can I be asking and what sort of testing can I do on my end to make sure this software works? Any suggestions would be very helpful.

• Different color prompts for different machines when using terminal/ssh?

  Hi, I have 5 machines I constantly ssh into to do work. Its getting increasingly frustrating when I am issuing wrong commands on wrong boxes. Luckily I havent done anything bad yet. I wanted to know if there is any hack which I can hardcode which will display my prompt in different colors based on the machine I am ssh into? Such as blue for desktop1, purple for laptop, red for server etc? Is this possible? Currently I am using this command export PS1="\e[0;31m[\u@\h \W]\$ \e[m " taken from here http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/bash-shell-change-the-color-of-my-shell-prompt-under-linux-or-unix/ but it obviously doesnt work across ssh. Also, if you have any other cool bash tips for helping me ease my sight will be wonderful. • uploading files greater than 1MB = connection resets

  I'm using nginx on the frontend as "proxy cache" and apache on the backend, i've set my PHP settings to the following: error_log = /var/www/site1/php_error.log error_reporting = 22527 file_uploads = On log_errors = On max_execution_time = 0 max_file_uploads = 20 max_input_time = -1 memory_limit = 512M post_max_size = 0 upload_max_filesize = 1000M What's the problem? Uploading files less than 1MB is successful but anything greater than that, Google Chrome outputs: Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET): The connection was reset. I already checked for the error log file but it doesn't exist in the directory. I also checked /var/log/httpd/error_log but no uploading related problems. I don't know anything else which might have caused the problem so I have reached out for your helping hand. Thanks!
