  • Pulling .live() functionality out of jQuery

    I am writing a Firefox Add-On that currently is depending on jQuery for the following things: Selectors Animations A special .live("focus") hail-mary event-catching maneuver that happens to work with jQuery 1.4.2 (but not 1.4.4) jQuery isn't well suited for functioning inside XUL, and it's a miracle we've gotten this far with it. We're trying to remove the jQuery requirements, the first two are easy (animations are simple, and we can use .querySelector() instead of jQuery), but the .live has proven impossible to do on our own. I've tried reading the source code, but I haven't been able to piece it apart. What is the jQuery .live function doing? There's clearly a lot more going on than document.addEventListener("focus"/"focusin",function_to_pick_apart_events). What else is going on here?

    On my new customer page, I have successfully implemented a jQuery show/hide toggle alongside a Prototype script using jQuery's .noconflict. (Thanks to all for answers!)   • Prevent "jQuery( html )" from triggering the browser to request images and other referenced content

    Using jQuery to create new DOM elements from text. Example: jQuery('<div><img src="/some_image.gif"></img></div>'); When this statement is executed, it causes the browser to request the file 'some_img.gif' from the server. Is there a way to execute this statement so that the resulting jQuery object can be used from DOM traversal, but not actually cause the browser to hit the server with requests for images and other referenced content? Example: var jquery_elememnts = jQuery('<div><img class="a_class" src="/some_image.gif"></img></div>'); var img_class = jquery_elememnts.find('img').attr('class'); The only idea I have now is to use regex to remove all of the 'src' tags from image elements and other things that will trigger the browser requests before using jQuery to evaluate the HTML. How can jQuery be used to evaluate HTML without triggering the browser to make requests to the server for referenced content inside the evaluated HTML? Thanks!

  • Having trouble with Flash, Javascript and JQuery

    I'm using JQuery with the JQuery flash plugin (http://jquery.lukelutman.com/plugins/flash/) and trying to send a JS call back to the flash, I keep running into "xxx is not a function" so apparently something is off. I'm new to JQuery and very new to this jquery flash plugin and just can't quite wrap my head around what I am doing wrong. Here's where I'm lading up the flash: <div id="tagimgback"> <script language="javascript"> $(document).ready(function(){ $('#tagflash').flash( { src: 'tagflash', width: 200, height: 200, flashvars: {theYear:'2010',theTagNumber:'123'} }, { version: 8 } ); }); </script> </div> And here's where I'm trying to call it: $("#tagflash").gotoNewFrame(theTagNumber); gotoNewFrame is an AS function within my flash. I know the function works as I've been able to test it prior to bringing jQuery into the mix.

    I am trying to install SQL Server on Windows 2012. Then with purple-include I want to do a transclusion and display it on http://mywebsite.com/page.html So the task is download http://stats.pingdom.com/file to http://mywebsite.com/file I figured out the transclusion part but I do not know how to copy a wabpage from A to B. Are there any script for this or how can I do this?

Overwhelmingly, you do it with Dropbox. Despite the proliferation of different platforms there has been little inroads made into any sort of universal syncing. We heard from quite a few different readers and by far the most popular option was to use Dropbox to ensure that you could get the music and documents you wanted whether you were on your desktop, laptop, netbook, iPhone, or Android device. In the same breath however, nearly all of your added on an additional service. The real message, it would seem, is that there simply isn’t a service good enough to meet all of the needs most users have, all of the time.   • Introducing jLight &ndash; Talking to the DOM using Silverlight and jQuery.

    Introduction With the recent news about Silverlight on the Windows Phone and all the great Out-Of-Browser features in the upcoming Silverlight 4 you almost forget Silverlight is a browser plugin. It most often runs in a web browser and often as a control. In many cases you need to communicate with the browser to get information about textboxes, events or details about the browser itself. To do this you can use JavaScript from Silverlight. Although Silverlight works the same on every browser, JavaScript does not and it won’t be long before problems arise. To overcome differences in browser I like to use jQuery. The only downside of doing this is that there’s a lot more code needed that you would normally use when you write jQuery in JavaScript. Lately, I had to catch changes is the browser scrollbar and act to the new position. I also had to move the scrollbar when the user dragged around in the Silverlight application. With jQuery it was peanuts to get and set the right attributes, but I found that I had to write a lot of code on Silverlight side.  With a few refactoring I had a separated out the plumbing into a new class and could call only a few methods on that to get the same thing done. The idea for jLight was born. jLight vs. jQuery The main purpose of jLight is to take the ease of use of jQuery and bring it into Silverlight for handling DOM interaction. For example, to change the text color of a DIV to red, in jQuery you would write: jQuery("div").css("color","red"); In jLight the same thing looks like so: jQuery.Select("div").Css("color","red");   Another example. To change the offset in of the last SPAN you could write this in jQuery : jQuery("span:last").offset({left : 10, top : 100});   In jLight this would do the same: jQuery.Select("span:last").Offset(new {left = 10, top = 100 });   Callbacks Nothing too special so far. To get the same thing done using the “normal” HtmlPage.Window.Eval, it wouldn’t require too much effort. But to wire up a handler for events from the browser it’s a whole different story. Normally you need to register ScriptMembers, ScriptableTypes or write some code in JavaScript. jLight takes care of the plumbing and provide you with an simple interface in the same way jQuery would. If you would like to handle the scroll event of the BODY of your html page, you’ll have to bind the event using jQuery and have a function call back to a registered function in Silverlight. In the example below I assume there’s a method “SomeMethod” and it is registered as a ScriptableObject as “RegisteredFromSilverlight” from Silverlight.   jQuery("body:first").scroll(function() { var sl = document.getElementbyId("SilverlightControl"); sl.content.RegisteredFromSilverlight.SomeMethod($(this)); });       Using jLight  in Silverlight the code would be even simpler. The registration of RegisteredFromSilverlight  as ScriptableObject can be omitted.  Besides that, you don’t have to write any JavaScript or evaluate strings with JavaScript.   jQuery.Select("body:first").scroll(SomeMethod);   Lambdas Using a lambda in Silverlight can make it even simpler.  Each is the jQuery equivalent of foreach in C#. It calls a function for every element found by jQuery. In this example all INPUT elements of the text type are selected. The FromObject method is used to create a jQueryObject from an object containing a ScriptObject. The Val method from jQuery is used to get the value of the INPUT elements.   jQuery.Select("input:text").Each((element, index) => { textBox1.Text += jQueryObject.FromObject(element).Val(); return null; });   Ajax One thing jQuery is often used for is making Ajax calls. Making calls to services to external services can be done from Silverlight, but as easy as using jQuery. As an example I would like to show how jLight does this. Below is the entire code behind. It searches my name on twitter and shows the result. This example can be found in the source of the project. The GetJson method passes a Silverlight JsonValue to a callback.   • Storing lots of large strings with frequent "appends" and few reads

    In my current project, I need to store a very long ASCII string to each instance of a given object. This string will receive an 2 appends per minute and will not be retrieved so frequently. The worst case scenario is a 5-10MB string. I'll have thousands of instances of my object and I'm worried that storing all those strings in the filesystem would not be optimal, but I can't think of a better solution. Can anyone suggest an alternative? Maybe a key-value store? In this case, which one? Any other thoughts?

  • How necessary is it to learn JavaScript before jQuery?

    In my opinion, when I looked at JavaScript, it looked like not my cup of tea. When I came across jQuery, I loved it. I sat and watched Nettuts+ 15 days of jQuery screencasts, 1 year later and now I'm fairly confident I wouldn't develop a website without including jQuery's library. I have never felt this has held me back but my question is, will this come back and bite me in the ass one day, the fact that I didn't have a solid JavaScript foundation before jumping feet first into one of its best (if not the best) frameworks? Did anyone else take this approach?

    Many, but not all, HTML layout problems can be solved with CSS alone. For those that can't, JQuery (on document load) has become very popular.* As a result of its ease, many developers are quick to use JQuery or Javascript for layout and style — even without understanding whether or not the problem can be solved with CSS alone. This is illustrated by responses to questions like this one. Is this bad practice? What are the arguments for/against? Should someone who sees this in practice attempt to persuade those developers otherwise? If so, what are the best responses to arguments in favor of JQuery saying it's "so easy"? * Example: Layouts that wish to use vertical layout flow of some kind often run into dead ends with CSS alone — this would include layouts similar to Pinterest, though I'm not sure that's actually impossible with CSS.

  • Could JQuery and similar tools be built into the browser install?

    After reading another question about JQuery and CDN's, is it feasible for tools like JQuery to "come with" the browser, thus reducing/eliminating the need for the first download from a CDN, or from your own host server. JQuery files specifically are pretty small, so you could easily have a number (all?) of the different versions as part of a browser install. Now fair enough, this would increase install footprint, download time for the browser itself. Then sites could check "local" first, before CDN (which then caches), before finally defaulting to downloading from the website server itself. If this is feasible, has it been done, and if not, why hasn't it be done?

  • Uploading many large files to a remote server

    I am in the process of creating an offsite backup, and need to do a initial load of data. Currently, that's about 400Gb, give or take 10Gb or so... The backup system is producing files which are about 4Gb each, and has some other, smaller related files also. So, i need to transfer all 400ish gigs to a remote server, but how? What is the best method? I have full remote access to the server, so i can install anything i need to install. There are Windows, Linux and a Solaris VM running on the box itself, so any of those can be used there, and i have Windows and Linux at home. I have 2 internet connections in house, 10Mb/s uploading on each, so something that could potentially split the number of connections would be handy (kind of like GetRight, but in reverse... PutRight?).

  • Delete temp file during finally vs delete output file during catch

    This is in Java 6. I've seen more than once that people create temp files, do something, then rename it to the output file. Everything is wrapped in a try-finally block, where the temp file is deleted in finally in case something goes wrong in between. try { //do something with tempFile //do something with tempFile //do something with tempFile tempFile.renameTo(outputFile); } finally { if (tempFile.exists()) tempFile.delete() } I was wondering what are the benefits of doing that instead of doing something to the output file directly and delete it in case of exceptions. try { //do something with outputFile //do something with outputFile //do something with outputFile } catch (Exception e) { if (outputFile.exists()) outputFile.delete(); } My guess is that deleting temp files in finally benefits me when the try block can throw many kinds of exceptions. Is my guess right? What else?

  • [c++] How to create a std::ofstream to a temp file?

    Okay, mkstemp is the preferred way to create a temp file in POSIX. But it opens the file and returns an int, which is a file descriptor. From that I can only create a FILE*, but not an std::ofstream, which I would prefer in C++. (Apparently, on AIX and some other systems, you can create an std::ofstream from a file descriptor, but my compiler complains when I try that.) I know I could get a temp file name with tmpnam and then open my own ofstream with it, but that's apparently unsafe due to race conditions, and results in a compiler warning (g++ v3.4. on Linux): warning: the use of `tmpnam' is dangerous, better use `mkstemp' So, is there any portable way to create an std::ofstream to a temp file?

  • S3 browser upload via POST: unable to handle errors gracefully

    I am writing an app where I want the customer to be able to upload to Amazon S3 straight from the browser. I can make this work just fine. But when errors occur, I want to handle them more gracefully than splattering an XML document on the customer's screen. I have a scheme that I think would work, but it's failing. Here's what I'm trying: Create a form to do the upload, and store the form on S3 itself, in the same domain as the "action" attribute of the form. Redirect the customer to this form. Now their browser is sitting on https://<bucket>.s3.amazonaws.com/something. The page contains a hidden iframe. The form sets its target to the iframe. The load event handler looks at the contents of the iframe, and acts upon it. So, something like this: <iframe id="foo" name="foo" style="display: none" /> <form target="foo" action="https://<bucket>.s3.amazonaws.com/"> <input type="hidden" name="..." value="..." /> <input type="file" name="file" /> </form> with this javascript (using jquery): function handler() { var message = $("#foo").contents().find('message').text(); alert(message); } $("#foo").load(handler); Using firebug, I can see that the iframe contains an XML document, that contains a "message" node. However, the .find('message') always fails to find anything within the XML document. Notice that the action of the form has the same domain, port, and scheme as the document itself. So, I don't think that I should be running afoul of the same-origin policy. Right? But it fails every time. This is using Firefox and Google Chrome browsers. Thanks for any advice!

  • File won't save output to file, and prints out a string oddly C++ Linux

    I'm trying to make a password code, the user enters a password, then it will save the password to a file in /tmp/ and then it will output the password (For me so I can find bugs). I have included the "string" library, and I set the password type to string, but when I output it, it outputs like this: 0x7fffb55baac0password // <-- thats the password I entered It will output hex (I think), then the password I entered, and it won't save it to the file in /tmp/ I want it to (Or any file in /tmp/).   • CKEditor inside jQuery Dialog, how do I build it?

    So, I'm working with CKEditor and jQuery, trying to build a pop-out editor. Below is what I have coded so far, and I can't seem to get it working the way I want it to. Basically, click the 'Edit' link, dialog box pops up, with the content to edit loaded into the CKEditor. Also, not required, but helpful if you can suggest how to do it. I can't seem to find out how to make the save button work in CKEditor (though I think the form will do it).     I've got 2 radio buttons with labels: button A is checked by default in HTML (checked="checked"). They're then processed with jQuery UI Radio Button. When I check button B and refresh the page, B's label is displayed as checked (it has CSS ui-state-active class). And A's label is displayed as unchecked, even though it's A button that is actually checked. It happens in Firefox (3) and IE (8).
