• reinstalling vista product key

  I recently formatted my laptop which came with Vista preinstalled and installed Windows 7 on the primary partition. I've now installed Vista on a different partition, but it won't activate my valid product key. I've looked around on here and have seen similar issues being raised, but I don't have the telephonic activation option (only option I have is online activation). I am located in South Africa. When I enter my product key from my sticker it says it is not valid, so I must either try to activate online again or buy a different product key. I have reinstalled Vista on the primary partition several times and activated the key without a problem. This is the first time I am installing it on a different partition.

• Testing performance from around the world - how do I get a linux shell easily in multiple countries?

  We are building a socket based service where latency is paramount, and as such we have servers distributed into 7 data centres around the world. However, whilst we know we're bringing the servers closer to the clients, it's very difficult to know how effective this is, and importantly, what difference this makes compared to our competitors. As such, we want to run simple scripts that test latency and throughput for both our service and our competitors, which is easy enough using Amazon, however Amazon only have 7 data centres. We would like to know for example how we perform in locations all over the world such as South Africa, Australia, China, Peru etc. Does anyone know of any service where we could piggy back off their global infrastructure and run some scripts to test this performance? The obvious contenders are people like Monitis, but I don't think they would allow us to run custom scripts, only standard protocol monitors. Thanks for your help. Matt

• What antivirus software supports updates without an internet connection?

  I'm putting antivirus software on Windows 7 computers in the middle of Africa. The computers don't have internet access, but still need to be protected against viruses from CDs and thumbdrives. Separate from these computers is one computer that does have extremely spotty internet access. What's the best AV software for this situation? The important part, as I see it, is that we need to keep the computers up to date, but can't let the AV software suck down updates at its leisure: the computers are disconnected, and getting emails onto the connected computer is a challenge enough. We thought we might transfer update files to the connected computer using a protocol that can handle repeated connection drops (e.g. FTP with resume.) Then we'd manually apply the update files to the disconnected computers. Does any AV software support this? Is there a better solution?

• Grub File Stolen ( WINDOWS and OpenSus )

  I have a problem with my computer. I installed OpenSus on my external, and I still have Windows on my HDD. OpenSus took the Grub file and placed it on my external, so now I have to open OpenSus to open Windows. I never got a Windows CD when I bought my computer ( I live in South Africa :) ).... I want to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my external, but then I will have to format my external in which case I will lose the Grub file causing me to lose Windows, which I can't afford to do... yet. Does anyone have an idea what I can do?

  DISCLAIMER: This is not a post about “Romney” or “Obama”. This is not a post for whom I am voting.  Information sourced for Wikipedia. Harris (born 1948) is an African American communist politician and member of the National Committee of the Socialist Workers Party. He was the party's candidate for President of the United States in 1996 receiving 8,463 votes and again in 2000 when his ticket received 7,378 votes. Harris also served as an alternate candidate for Róger Calero in 2004 and 2008 in states where Calero could not qualify for the ballot (due to being born in Nicaragua). In 2004 he received 7,102 votes of the parties 10,791 votes. In 2008 he received 2,424 votes. More recently Harris was the SWP candidate in the 2009 Los Angeles mayoral election receiving 2,057 votes for 0.89% of the vote. Harris served for a time as the national organization secretary of the SWP. He was a staff writer for the socialist newsweekly The Militant in New York. He wrote about the internal resistance to South African apartheid and in 1994 traveled to South Africa to attend the Congress of South African Trade Unions convention. The Socialist Workers Party is a far-left political organization in the United States. The group places a priority on "solidarity work" to aid strikes and is strongly supportive of Cuba. The SWP publishes The Militant, a weekly newspaper that dates back to 1928, and maintains Pathfinder Press.   With the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa almost a week underway, the soccer fans all around the World are talking about at least 2 things. When you're in a situation where you're introducing a new product, in IT terms, introducing a new application, you would like to test all possible scenarios that your end users could be using and experiencing. However, that's a very time and resource intensive process to do for every application change or update.  It's like getting ready for the big game but you have no game plan.That's why a new approach has been developed. One that's based on the 80/20 rule. Testing 80% of the application will cost about 20% of the efforts. The remaining 20% of your application will not be tested before deployment, but monitored with a real user monitoring solution immediately after deployment. • How to improve performance of map that loads new overlay images

  I have inherited a website to maintain that uses a html map overlaying a real map to link specific countries to specific pages. previously it loaded the default map image, then with some javascript it would change the image src to an image with that particular country in a different colour on mouseover and reset the image source back to the original image on mouse out to make maintenance (adding new countries) easier i made the initial map a background image by utilising some CSS for the div tag, and then created new images for each country which only had that countries hightlight so that the images remain fairly small. this works great but theres one issue which is particularly noticeable on slower internet connections when you hover over a country if you dont have the image file in your browser cache or downloaded it wont load the image unless you hover over another country and then back onto the first country - i guess this is due to the image having to manually be downloaded on first hover. My question: is it possible to force the load of these extra images AFTER the page and all the other assets have finished loading so that this behaviour is all but eliminated? the html code for the MAP is as follows: <div class="gtmap"><img id="Image-Maps_6200909211657061" src="<?php echo cdnhttpsCheck(); • apt-get update very slow, stuck at "Waiting for headers"

  I have looked at similar questions: Stuck at 0% [waiting for headers] (apt) apt-get update stuck on "Waiting for Headers" However neither one of them answer my problem. I am running 12.04 AMD64 and have recently started getting an issue that when I update my repos from my connection at home through a terminal, using sudo apt-get update, it takes forever (literally after 2 hours it was at 28%), however when I run from a different location it takes less than 5 minutes to complete. I have attempted changing which mirror I use but that does not solve the issue. I have also cut down what is in my sources list but this also makes no difference. There are no faults on my ADSL line as I have already contacted my ISP to check this. It also makes no difference if I use a WiFi or network cable connection. What could be my issue? A speed test (www.speedtest.net) comes out at about 0.9 Mbps down and 0.42 Mbps up (which is a shade under the advertised line speed), I reside in South Africa and use the UCT LEG server. But I have also tried the other mirrors available in SA....none of them make a difference.

• I'm hoping to start an online supermarket and needs advice on open source shopping cart software and applications..

  I have been researching on both open source software and off-the-shelf software for an online supermarket project in Africa. I have now narrowed by search to X-cart and the PHP based PrestaShop shopping carts. My plan is to acquire an open source shopping cart either by purchasing or as a free open source cart and hire a local developer to customize it to our local needs. I have been doing the demo for x-cart for three weeks now and had thought it might work best for us but after going through the 600 page manual and I'm concerned with how far it can be localized. Yesterday i was looking at the possible Prestashop free open source cart and i seem to like the back-end. Didn't like the back-end for Magento much but from reviews conducted by third-parties they seem to recommend it. I'm now wondering whether i should have a developer start the whole project from scratch, or use an open source software such us PrestaShop or get x-cart which can then be customized. Note that my store will have thousands of products and services including groceries and so i want something that can handle upto 500,000 products and over. Kindly advice. 93276

• Best practice for designing a risk-style board game

  I'm just trying to figure out how to set up the code for a game like risk... I would like it to be extensible, so that I can have multiple maps (ie- World, North America, Eurasia, Africa) so hardcoding in the map doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense I'm a bit confused on how/where items should be stored/accessed. Here are the objects I see the game theoretically using: -Countries/Territories -Cities (Can be contained within territories) -Capitols -Connections -Continents -Map -Troops At the moment, I feel like: -A map should have a list of continents and countries. The continents would be more of a 'logical' thing where the continents would just be lists of countries that are checked for bonuses at the start of turns -Countries should have a list of countries that they're connected to for the connections What I can't figure out is: Where do I store the troops? Do I have an object for every single troop or do I just store the number of troops on a country object as an integer? What about capitols and cities? Do those just have a reference to the country they reside in? Is there anything I'm not seeing here that's going to screw me over in the long run with the way that I'm thinking about things now? Any advice would be appreciated.

• Best industry to work for as a developer.

  Hi guys, Hmmm, StackOverflow now warns me of: "The question you're asking appears subjective and is likely to be closed." I've been an avid java (J2SE, JEE) developer for over 5 years now (and I'm not complaining, even though I want to go back to Delphi & C++). My contract has just ended and I'm wondering of possible job to further tackle. I've done banking and insurance industry for all my career (with 1 year on a Fortuner 500 company) and pretty much, banking is the slowest (and boring) industry to work for (IMHO) since they're strict in their business practices (fair enough). The upside is that they pay. My question is: What is the best industry for a developer, who tends to get bored relatively quickly, to work for? Is it also worthwhile for me to do consultancy (and if so, what type of consultancy)? PS There's no gaming industry in South Africa, so suggesting it requires that I have to travel to a country where gaming is alive! I don't see the Community Wiki checkbox, so I don't know how to make this a wiki.

Nowadays, being a graduate in Nigeria is not the easiest thing; the life after graduation is much harder than one would normally imagine. I guess it isn’t helped with the Economical uproar of the last few years but it’s as grueling as it can get.  Also the Upper vs Lower class phenomena makes the journey a little too much hurried as it is easier to lose one’s way. Joining Oracle is a dream come-true as it further enhances my stance of taking Technology to the core of Nigeria. My initial perception about joining Oracle is that am going to be monitored every single second and my life would practically revolve around work but ever since I stepped in here, it has been an amazing experience. As much as the work can be stressful at times, it’s also the best place I have ever worked in and the atmosphere is great. My team is the best Pre-Sales team in the region and I gain invaluable knowledge every minute, we have a bond and understanding that helps propel each other to achieve more. • Where have I been for the last month?

  So, I have been pretty quiet for the last month or so. True, it has been holiday time and I went to Cape Town for a stunning week of sunshine and blue skies, but the second I got back home I spent the remainder of my holiday on my pc viewing tutorials on www.tekpub.com Craig Shoemaker, who I got in contact with because of his podcast, sent me a 1 month free subscription to the site and it has been really appreciated. I have done a lot of WPF programming in the past, but not any asp.net stuff and so I used the time to get a peek at asp.net mvc2 as well as a bunch of other technologies. I just wished I had more spare time to do the rest of the videos. While I didn’t understand all of what was being shown on the asp.net stuff (it required previous asp.net expertise), the site was a really good jump start to someone wanting to learn a new technology and broaden the horizons and I would highly recommend it, My only gripe is that in South Africa we have limited bandwidth and bandwidth speeds and so I spent a lot of my monthly bandwidth on the site and had to top up with my ISP several times because of the high quality video captures that the site did. I would have preferred to download the video’s, but apparently that is only available to people who have the yearly subscription fee. Other than that, great site and thanks a ton Craig!
