• Detect movie being played (Windows)

  Watching a movie is quite a different user activity. User doesn't touch neither mouse nor keyboard. Yet he 'actively' uses the computer. Thus, screensaver shouldn't run, indexing should be performed with care etc. On the other side, playing video requires either using direct write to video memory, or DirectShow, or some other API. This may be the key to the answer. What is the Dead Simple Way to determine that a video is being played?

• Map browser DOM using Javascript

  I'm trying to map a browsers DOM using javascript. It should list all the functions and attributes associated with it and it should also recurse through any object attributes. Now as I understand it 'window' is the most top-level node (although I've see a reference to 'top' as well in Chrome.) then 'document', etc. However I've never seen 'Node' under 'window' and yet I can call it. So where is 'Node' located? Is there a level above 'window' or is it a separate object (W3C says it's supposed to be inherited by 'document' only.)? I've been playing with a function to do this but I keep getting weird results so I'm not post it here. Alternatively - is it possible to get the properties from the object types instead of the object reference itself? for example 'DOMWindow' instead of 'window'. I think this would stop duplicating data from inherited objects.

• VLC helper protocol on Mac OS X

  Hey everybody, I am trying to add a vlc:// helper protocol on Mac OS X. To register the protocol, I have unsuccessfully been playing around with the MoreInternet PrefPane. What I want to have in my browser is a vlc://someressource.com/audio.mp3, which should launch VLC and add http://someressource.com/audio.mp3 to the playlist (this works fine on Windows and also Linux if I remember correctly). Maybe even just have vlc://http:// so that https would also be supported. I have no idea how to achieve this. I tried making a bash script, which MoreInternet would not accept. Then I tried making an application through Automator with my Bash script embedded. That did not work either, as the Automator application has no "creator code" - whatever that is?! Can any of you guys point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance!

  I have this hypotetical MySQL table: TABLE cars: (year, color, brand) How do I count # of cars grouped by brand and year? I mean, how can I get to know how many colors are there grouped by brand like: brand "GM": total # of colors: 8. brand "GM": total # of years (grouped together): 14 (meaning there are count of 14 different years). brand "TOYOTA": total # of colors: 3. brand "TOYOTA": total # of years (grouped together): 10 (meaning there are count of 14 different years) I tried playing some queries with COUNT, DISTINCT, GROUP BY but I can't get to it. • Sound Manager Classes for Windows (C# or C++ .Net 2.0)

  Hi guys! I need some classes for playing short wav sounds, this classes would load this wav files into memory when an instance created, play sounds in background when needed, release this wav files from memory when an instance disposed. How can I do this on C# for windows (.Net 2.0)? (Win API's sndPlaySound, OpenAL or may be any wrapper) Ideally I would love to find an exist solution that simple and able to solve my task. • python streaming TCP server with RPC

  I have written a little streaming mp3 server in python. So far all it does is accept a ServerSocket connection, and begin streaming all mp3 data in its queue to the request using socket.send(). I have implemented this to chunk in stream icy metadata, so the name of the playing song shows up in the client. I would like to add playlist management to the server, so that I can manipulate the playlist of the running server. I have a vague idea that xmlrpclib would be suited to doing this, but I'm confused about one thing: When I start the server it listens on port N. The python xmlrpclib examples involve creating a socket and listening for requests. So my question is should server listen on two ports; i.e., one for streaming client requests and one for xmlrpclib calls, or is there a way to do it by somehow delegating the request to the appropriate handler based on its type?

• MochaUI: 'A is null' when adding columns

  I've just downloaded MochaUI, and I'm playing around trying to build an interface. I've successfully created windows, but I'm having trouble when it comes to layouts with columns. I've included all of the libraries in the same order as the demo, and this is in my init code: window.addEvent('domready', function(){ new MochaUI.Column({ id: 'sideColumn1', placement: 'left', width: 200, resizeLimit: [100, 300] }); }); When run, no column is created and I get the error: A is null Does anyone have any ideas? • MapReduce results seem limited to 100?

  I'm playing around with Map Reduce in MongoDB and python and I've run into a strange limitation. I'm just trying to count the number of "book" records. It works when there are less than 100 records but when it goes over 100 records the count resets for some reason. Here is my MR code and some sample outputs: var M = function () { book = this.book; emit(book, {count : 1}); } var R = function (key, values) { var sum = 0; values.forEach(function(x) { sum += 1; }); var result = { count : sum }; return result; } MR output when record count is 99: {u'_id': u'superiors', u'value': {u'count': 99}} MR output when record count is 101: {u'_id': u'superiors', u'value': {u'count': 2.0}} Any ideas?

• How do I output an individual character when using char *[] = "something"

  I've been playing with pointers to better understand them and I came across something I think I should be able to do, but can't sort out how. The code below works fine - I can output "a", "dog", "socks", and "pants" - but what if I wanted to just output the 'o' from "socks"? • Conceptually, how does replay work in a game?

  I was kind of curious as to how replay might be implemented in a game. Initially, I thought that there would be just a command list of every player/ai action that was taken in the game, and it then 're-plays' the game and lets the engine render as usual. However, I have looked at replays in FPS/RTS games, and upon careful inspection even things like the particles and graphical/audible glitches are consistent (and those glitches are generally *in*consistent). So How does this happen. In fixed camera angle games I though it might just write every frame of the whole scene to a stream that gets stored and then just replays the stream back, but that doesn't seem like enough for games that allow you to pause and move the camera around. You'd have to store the locations of everything in the scene at all points in time (No?). So for things like particles, that's a lot of data to push which seems like a significant draw on the game's performance whilst playing.

• Checking JRE version inside browser

  Basically, I'm wanting to figure out the best way to check the user's JRE version on a web page. I have a link to a JNLP file that I only want to display if the user's JRE version is 1.6 or greater. I've been playing around with the deployJava JavaScript code (http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/guides/jweb/deployment_advice.html) and have gotten it to work in every browser but Safari (by using deployJava.versionCheck). For whatever reason, Safari doesn't give the most updated JRE version number - I found this out by displaying the value of the getJREs() function. I have 1.6.0_20 installed, which is displayed in every other browser, but Safari keeps saying that only 1.5.0 is currently installed. I've also tried using the createWebStartLaunchButtonEx() function and specifying '1.6.0' as the minimum version, but when I click the button nothing happens (in any browser). Any suggestions?

• Why should pop() take an argument?

  Quick background I'm a Java developer who's been playing around with C++ in my free/bored time. Preface In C++, you often see pop taking an argument by reference: void pop(Item& removed); I understand that it is nice to "fill in" the parameter with what you removed. That totally makes sense to me. This way, the person who asked to remove the top item can have a look at what was removed. However, if I were to do this in Java, I'd do something like this: Item pop() throws StackException; This way, after the pop we return either: NULL as a result, an Item, or an exception would be thrown. My C++ text book shows me the example above, but I see plenty of stack implimentations taking no arguments (stl stack for example). The Qustion How should one implement the pop function in C++? The Bonus Why?

• Controlling Windows Media Player through PHP / batch files

  I'm currently writing a tiny webapp for my HTPC (actually, a PC serving as both a media player and web- / fileserver) that will allow me to remotely control the playing of audio, without having to turn on my TV just to switch songs. I'm using Windows Media Player as my audio player of choice, and I thought I could control it through PHP's COM Class. Unfortunately, I've not been able to find any documentation or examples on controlling WMP through this interface. Can anyone point me in the right direction here? A second (and much less preferable) solution would be to use PHP's exec() call to start batch files that, in turn, control WMP.

• What is the best API in any language for Audio and MIDI music application development?

  What, in your opinion, is the best API to utilize in developing an application that handles both realtime MIDI and audio input and output? This would be for an application that is used in the process of making music as opposed to playing audio or MIDI files. I'm aware that this may be a subjective question, but if you know of an API that is dominantly used for these purposes, please share it. I'm agnostic about which language the API is for, and I also don't care about portability. The real concern is for an API that is well documented, well designed (e.g. thought out and intuitive to developers using it), and actively maintained. OS portability would be nice, but it is second to having an API/Language that meets the previous requirements. Please note that the emphasis is not on API's for sound synthesis or for composing music with code. It is intended for the handling of sound file and MIDI data in a real-time context.

• varchar data type to datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range??

  Very weird problem occurred, I have moved a site from one server to another - All is working, but any query involving a date is playing up. I get the following: DELETE FROM MYTABLE WHERE categoryId = -2 AND datecreated < '3/23/2010'; The conversion of a varchar data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range value Now what's strange is I have changed the LCID to 1033 on the new server as the date is showing as US format and its still throwing an error! I then tried 2057 and again the same error? Made no difference. I'm a little confused, as this is a working site from a server with IIS6 - The locale is 1033 on that server and it works perfectly!! :S I have just tried thrown a Cdate() around the date too and yet again the same error??? Any ideas??

  UPDATE: My model going into the save method is PartialViewModel, which in the save method, is pushed into the index's ContactViewModel and sent back. This wasn't clear. I am playing around with MVC3, and have a contact controller with a SaveDetails action. The index cshtml has a partial with a form whose action is pointing to this controller. When I submit the form not having completed it fully, thereby firing the validation, the url now contains the SaveDetails action name (http://localhost:7401/Contact/SaveDetails). The form code is: @using (Html.BeginForm("SaveDetails", "Contact")) { ... } The controller action looks like this: public ActionResult SaveDetails(Models.PartialsViewModel pvm) { return View("Index", new ContactViewModel{ PartialsViewModel = pvm } ); } What am I doing wrong?

  I'm playing around with associative arrays right now and I can't seem to figure out how to add additional objects to the array. I tried insert but it doesn't recognize both arguments. According to Apple Doc, there should be ways to do this but I can't find which notification should I use for this purpose. • Play local video with an HTML/Javascript based Adobe Air application

  I'm trying to add some video playback (that will be used for a tutorial) to my Adobe Air application. I'm not a Flex or Flash developer and my application is HTML/Javascript based, so I'm having trouble with some of the video solutions I've been able to find. Here is one of the examples I've found that is flex based: Playing local files with Air I've looked for a free flash video player that I could just embed. But the only one I've found I was unable to coerce to play files from my Air application directory. I was exited at the prospect of using the HTML5 video tag which I thought Air supported, but that also seems to not work. Can anyone recommend a free flash video player that I can embed? Or a solution that doesn't have to be built completely from flex?

• Self Executing jQuery Plugin?

  I am working on expansion of my jQuery plug-in authoring knowledge, just playing around with my own ideas for learning benefits. So i was wondering how you guys tackle the need of plugin executing without any user specific input. So I have a need for plug-in that executes right away after document is ready, without any user's specific input just as long as doc is loaded, so the only way I see how to execute plug-in on it's own is to attach handler to ready listener that executes my function which I extended the jQuery with. And because this needs to be self enclosed, part of the code, I attach handler to event listener within the function. So how else could one tackle this? Any take at this is appreciated. • Can I set a PHP class property from an existing variable?
