• SATA Devices not showing up when in UEFI mode

  I'm trying to install Windows and the bios should be set to UEFI mode. The problem is that all SATA devices aren't showing up (shows as if there aren't any) so I can't boot from the installation CD (it's just not there). The weird thing is that when set to LEGACY mode they all show up.. SATA mode is set to AHCI and I'm on Lenovo Y510P. I have a Linux OS installed that is accessible only when BIOS is in LEGACY mode (otherwise the hard drive it's on is not available) I also tried reseting the BIOS settings which didn't help..   Which Unix like environment do you prefer on Windows? I have found Cygwin to be very comfortable for a Windows platform (usually XP). I am wondering if there is a better alternative (not because I want to move away from Cygwin). What are the features of Cygwin that you like OR, What are features you find in alternatives that you miss in Cygwin? I am often miss binary compatibility of applications built on Cygwin. These cannot be run directly on another Windows platform. But, usually fetching a copy of cygwin1.dll suffices.   Hi i am trying to connect 2 ubuntu computers as a LAN. In my current setup I have: One machine running ubuntu 11.10 with Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller While the other machine is running Ubuntu 12.04 with an Atheros Communications Inc AR8152 v1.1 Fast Ethernet The two machines are connected via a switch (Edimax ES-3205P). Unfortunately I still cannot connect the two machines together. Can somebody please show me what to do and how to go about solving this issue?

  I'm using an IDE with multiple windows that cluttered up my taskbar. All the icons and labels are exactly the same (totally unhelpful). I used 7 Taskbar Tweaker (http://rammichael.com/7-taskbar-tweaker-v1-6) to remove the labels from the buttons, but now I'm looking at multiple identical icons. Is there any way to change the icons of these windows, even though they are the same application? This picture shows 5 windows, all from the same program, and 3 windows from Google Chrome. They all look the same!

• How to remove program shortcuts on the desktop in window in Windows 7

  I have a bunch of "Shortcut" icons on my Windows desktop folder which don't appear as .lnk files in the powershell view of C:/users/ME/Desktop nor in fact do they show up at all. They do show up in the file manager, however, and right clicking the "Shortcut" and selecting Properties reveals that they refer directly to the corresponding applications in my C:/Program Files/ directory. How can I prevent them from being displayed on the desktop (or in Windows Explorer) without uninstalling them? I tried selecting them and deleting them, but Windows prompted me for administrator permissions to delete the programs themselves, and not the shortcuts.

• Nginx return 444 depending on upstream response code

  I have nginx setup to pass to an upstream using proxy pass. The upstream is written to return a 502 http response on certain requests, rather then returning the 502 with all the header I would like nginx to recoginse this and return 444 so nothing is returned. Is this possible? • Use 2 wireless adapters to connect to 2 WIFI networks (local and internet) simultaneously?

  On my HP Compaq 6710b there's an internal WIFI network adapter. Attached to the same laptop there's also an external USB Alfa WIFI adapter. I live near campus and can pick it's WIFI signal. The problem is that when I am connected to the Internet Wifi using the internal adapter, and then connect to the home (non-internet) Wifi network's router, I lose the connection to the internet (it stays connected, but there's no actual connection). So how can I use the two adapters to connect to both networks successfully ? The router is Belkin N150 Enhanced Router Model F6D4230-4 V1 The external adapter is: ALFA AWUS 036NHR

• Script/scheduled task to clean up Dowloads folder (Windows 7)?

  My downloads folder is my primary connection to the internet (and thus the world), and has rapidly become a virtual junk drawer. I imagine I'm not alone here. What I'd like to do is have some sort of a script that -creates a new folder (named YYYY_MM Archive so it sorts nicely) -takes everything* inside of the Downloads folder (for the current user) -moves it to the new folder and have this run once/month. *(excluding previous archives) This strikes me as the type of thing Saw some answers on related questions that seemed to suggest that this is an eminently doable task in PowerShell. Is it? I'm on Windows 7 Enterprise.

• Download and locally store all emails from all mailboxes on Office365?

  We have a business that uses Office365 and we want to be able to save all the emails locally. I found a thread on Office365 community pertaining to this and basically it was stated that there is no direct way of accomplishing this. I am curious if anyone has considered this and if there is a good method for storing these emails locally, even if it's some nifty PowerShell programming. All I've come up with is having a master mailbox which can view all mailboxes, and just have it sync and archive locally to the computer. I have not tried this yet, as the storage file sounds like it will be huge, so this does not seem like a fantastic idea and I'm open to any suggestions!

• how do I list Distribution Group (List) and their members inside of an OU using AD or exchange 2010

  our entire domain has thousands of distribution groups, while i can use the script referenced here: How to get a list of all Distribution Lists and their Members in Exchange 2007? to pull all distribution groups and their members, it would be too hard to filter through all results. I particularilly need to pull either a. (preferred) all groups (both distribution and security) and their members inside of an OU (this particular OU contains over 100 hundred groups) or b. all groups and members matching a name starting with exampl* dsquery | dsget looks like could almost serve that purpose however when i did: dsquery group "OU=my-department,DC=blah,DC=blahblah,DC=com" -name * | dsget group -members (-expand) c:\my-department.txt it displays only the members without showing which group they belong to. The output I need should have: group name, members and potentially expanded sub-groups. i am still researching on how to get this done, seems like i can somehow make the above referenced script to search only inside of an OU, but i am not very familiar with powershell. any help would be appreciated, thank you.

This works very well, but preparing them is tedious : 1 - install a Windows with the last slipstreamed version we have (automated install) 2 - check Windowsupdate to see what's new, and take note 3 - download each new update available 4 - go to step 2 until no new update is available 5 - slipstream them into the last version we have (I already automated this step) I'd like a way to automate parts or all of this. Maybe a program able to know which updates are installed (already saw one, I don't remember which, and I know PowerShell can do this)... and able to download them ? Or to get them from local disk ? • Exchange stops working after changing System Time

  I am currently in a situation where the system time of my windows machine differs 6 hours from the actual local time. I tried chaning the system time of my windows machine 6 hours back to match the actual local time. The issue is, when the system time is changed, Exchange stops working as it wont start anymore. When i change the time back Exchange works again. Here is the error that it shows when im trying to open the management console after changing the system time. The Follwing error occured while attempting to connect to the specified server "servername". The attempt to connect to http://servername/PowerShell using "Kerberos" authentication failed: Connecting to remote server failed with the following error message: Access is denied. • How can I solve Windows PPTP VPN issues?

  I'm having persistent problems with Windows PPTP VPN connections. The VPN appears up whilst the tunnel won't transfer traffic (ping to a remote IP within the VPN works for a while, and then fails). The client receives routing information via DHCP. When the connection fails, the routing table is still correct so I don't think it's a routing problem. My internet connection is via an ADSL2 line. There's software to deal with PPTP problems, like TunnelRat, but I don't want to install v1.1 of the .NET framework and I'd rather get to the bottom of the problem (I have multiple VPN connections and some are more unreliable than others). What can I do to get to the bottom of this? Alternatively, what can I do to keep the connection alive?

• Launching multiple applications with a single command/script/shortcut

  I realized a few days ago that every time I sit down at work, I do a few things after unlocking my computer. First, I open up Firefox, then I open up Chrome, then I log in to Digsby. I realized I could probably save repeating this daily by writing a small batch script to open up Firefox and Chrome , but I couldn't figure out how to make it work.. and since the whole effort is to save time I don't want to bash my head around in the windows command prompt to do it. I also tired this in powershell but ran in to a bunch of security nonsense. Is there a way to do this that I am missing? Bonus points if somebody has figured out how to manipulate Digsby via COM , scripting, or python =)

• Firefox unable to load SSL Certificate Chain, while Chrome, IE do

  I created a certificate for our IIS 6 by sending a request (created with openssl) to our organization's CA. I already had trouble to integrate the private key into that certificate, that has been solved, see SO question IIS 6.0 now uses the certificate (with TSL v1 and SSL v3), that is the 4th in cert hierarchy. Now, if I access the intranet site, chrome accepts the certificate, so does IE, but Firefox complains about an insecure connection and wants me to add an exceptional rule. If I look into the certificate, how FF presents it to me, I cannot see any of the three issuers. How can this be? If I connect via openssl s_client -showcerts -connect... I only see my own certificate too, which is said to be not verified. I am quite confused now. Where's the mistake and how can I make FF accept certificate without forcing our users to add that exceptionrule? Maybe do I have to add all the three issuer certificates into cert store of the win2003 server that hosts IIS 6.0 ??

• Is there a way to change the permissions of a series of directories on Windows 7 without getting a dialog box when it can't change the rights?

  Is there some way to change the permissions recursively on a series of directories without getting a dialog box that pops up and tells me it can't change the permissions on a particular file? I keep getting this dialogs multiple times duing the process of changing permissions: An error occurred while applying security information to: C:\pagefile.sys The process cannot access the file because it is being used another process. Eventually I get so many of them that I start clicking the mouse or pressing the space bar so many times that I accidentally click the cancel button. Also it would be great if I could keep a log of which files it can't change permissions on. Is this possible in Windows 7? Does it have to be done from the command prompt or from powershell?

• Remotely initiate windows updates

  I have a network with countless workstations on it and the windows updates are done through WSUS in push cycles to allow us to use a generic image and configuration and avoid network congestion. I have a number of workstations in storage that are connected once a month for a few days to recieve updates, however not all of them fall within their push cycle. I want to avoid going to each machine and clicking "check updates" as that would require me to connect a monitor, mouse and keyboard. Is there a way (preferably through powershell but im open minded) to initiate a check and install of updates on a remote system? Lets say for 1 system at a time right now, I can add a file reader and a look later. NOTE: the configuration of the WSUS server is above my pay grade, im simply being asked to ensure these machines are updated. Thanks for any help or hints

• Synergy doesn't work correctly if I switch client/server role (left of works, right of does not)

  When I use my win7/64bit as a server, with the mac (10.7.5) on its left, it works. Screens: [Mac/10.7.5]---[Win7/64bit] I've now switched the roles, so I use the Mac's keyboard (because Bug #18/19) and use windows as a client. Now I cannot move the mouse over the right edge to the windows client. But if I configure windows to be on the left (virtually at least), it works, I can use the left edge to cross over to the windows client. Dock is on the bottom. Synergy v1.4.15 What do I need to change in order to fix this? Thanks!

• SNMP - So I have a MIB. Now What?

  I can't seem to get my head wrapped around the purpose of a MIB. I have a collection of ~20 MIB files that were supplied to me by the vendor, but what do I do with them? I also have a few OID's that were supplied by the vendor that don't seem to be valid. When I issue an "snmpget -v1 -c public 192.168.0.123 .1.4.6.3.2.6.2" (assume that's a valid OID), I get an error indicating the variable is unknown. Does this sound like a hardware configuration problem? Do I need to "load" (for lack of better words) the MIB into the device? Unfortunately, the vendor has been completely unresponsive with returning emails to my questions, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Windows 8: How to Lock (not sleep) laptop on lid close?

  If my laptop is connected to power source and is not configured to sleep on lid close (it is connected to power source and is working, i don't want it to sleep. It's compiling my code) if i close the lid, laptop will do nothing. This works as expected, but actually if i have my laptop connected to power source in the office it will be good to lock it if i close a lid. So no one can just open the lid and see my unlocked desktop. I searched google and it says thet correct use case is to manually lock laptop via Win + L every time before lid is closed. This is ok, but not very secure - after all, i can forget Win + L. Is t any easy way (maybe some registry value or app) to configure windows laptop so it will lock on lid close even without sleep? Of course i can write app / powershell script for this task, but this is not suitable for non-programmers end users.

• "type" Command Not Working As Expected on Git Bash

  The type command, in Linux, returns the location, on the filesystem, of the given file, if it is in the current folder or the $PATH. This functionality is also available through Windows with the Git Bash command line program. The command also returns a file's location given the file without its extension (.exe, .vbs, etc.) However, I have run into what seems like a strange corner case where the file exists on the $PATH but doesn't get returned using the command. I am thinking of buying a new computer soon, so I looked up the method of transferring the license key from one computer to another, in preparation for actually doing this. The method I found mentioned the files slmgr.vbs and slui.exe, both of which reside in the C:/Windows\System32 folder, which is in my $PATH, as usual for a Windows computer. However, these two files aren't showing up when I use the type command. Also, neither gets executed when I call the files as commands without their extensions in Git Bash, and only slmgr.vbs gets executed when I call them with the extensions. Finally, slmgr.vbs is shown when listing the folder's contents in Git Bash, as well, but slui.exe isn't. I thought this might have to do with permissions, and, indeed, both files have very restrictive permissions, as you can see in the pictures below, but they both have the same permissions, which wouldn't explain why one gets executed and the other doesn't when called directly, nor why one file is listed on command line but the other isn't. • Flex chart not displaying right values along x axis.

• Is possible to make mt.exe embed manifest files correctly in Visual Studio 2008?

  I found that mt.exe fails to correctly create and embed manifest files into executables when run inside a VCPROJ. For example the same executable load well on Windows 7 but failed to load on Windows XP. The manifest was embedded and correct. After I spend lots of hours searching for possible reasons and solution I modified the project settings to generate the manifest outside the exe file. Now it works on both systems. Here are the examples for debug builds. • Source code versioning with comments (organizational practice) - leave or remove?

  Before you start admonishing me with "DON'T DO IT," "BAD PRACTICE!" and "Learn to use proper source code control", please hear me out first. I am fully aware that the practice of commenting out old code and leaving it there forever is very bad and I hate such practice myself. But here's the situation I'm in. A few months ago I joined a company as software developer. I had worked in the company for few months as an intern, about a year before joining recently. Our company uses source code version control (CVS) but not properly. Here's what happened both in my internship and my current permanent position. Each time I was assigned to work on a project (legacy, about 8-10 years old). Instead of creating a CVS account and letting me check out code and check in changes, a senior colleague exported the code from CVS, zipped it up and passed it to me. While this colleague checks in all changes in bulk every few weeks, our usual practice is to do fine-grained versioning in the actual source code itself (each file increments in versions independent from the rest). Whenever a change is made to a file, old code is commented out, new code entered below it, and this whole section is marked with a version number. Finally a note about the changes is placed at the top of the file in a section called Modification History. Finally the changed files are placed in a shared folder, ready and waiting for the bulk check-in. /* * Copyright notice blah blah * Some details about file (project name, file name etc) * Modification History: * Date Version Modified By Description * 2012-10-15 1.0 Joey Initial creation * 2012-10-22 1.1 Chandler Replaced old code with new code */ code .... //v1.1 start //old code new code //v1.1 end code .... Now the problem is this. In the project I'm working on, I needed to copy some new source code files from another project (new in the sense that they didn't exist in destination project before). These files have a lot of historical commented out code and comment-based versioning including usually long or very long Modification History section. Since the files are new to this project I decided to clean them up and remove unnecessary code including historical code, and start fresh at version 1.0. (I still have to continue the practice of comment-based versioning despite hating it. And don't ask why not start at version 0.1...) I have done similar something during my internship and no one said anything. My supervisor has seen the work a few times and didn't say I shouldn't do such clean-up (if at all it was noticed). But a same-level colleague saw this and said it's not recommended as it may cause downtime in the future and increase maintenance costs. An example is when changes are made in another project on the original files and these changes need to be propagated to this project. With code files drastically different, it could cause confusion to an employee doing the propagation. It makes sense to me, and is a valid point. I couldn't find any reason to do my clean-up other than the inconvenience of a ridiculously messy code. So, long story short: Given the practice in our company, should I not do such clean-up when copying new files from project to project? Is it better to make changes on the (copy of) original code with full history in comments? Or what justification can I give for doing the clean-up?
