• Ubuntu 12.4.1 failing in vm both Vbox and Vmware on new HP Envy 4t-1000

  Brand new to Linux, getting frustrated trying to get an environment up with Ubuntu. My primary goal is to learn Linux and Apache/PHP development. I need to keep my Windows OS as main on my machine for work, so i'm trying to virtualize Ubuntu 12.4.1 without luck (many attempts). I have a new HP Envy 4t-1000 with 16gb ram, and 32 gb ssd caching with 500gb spindle hard drive. Graphics card is an Intel HD 3000 with AMD Radeon 7670M. With installing Ubuntu desktop in VBox, I'm getting this result: https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=51939 With VMware workstation 7 (patched), I complete the install of Ubuntu, it reboots, purple desktop briefly flashes then it drops to command line. I bought a beginning Ubuntu book, and it recommends trying to manually configure graphics if this happens. So I tried doing a safe boot holding shift - I get to the first screen (GRUB) loads fine, and I choose recovery mode. After choosing the recovery mode, I get the recovery mode options, and can arrow down to what the book suggests 'Run in fail safe graphic mode.' Once I select this option, I get a black screen with a large white dialogue box, at the top it says "The system is running in low-graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself." Then there is an ok button way down at the bottom. When I select 'ok' I get a menu for a few options, book recommended 'reconfigure graphics.' When I try this, I get a menu of two options: 1) "Use generic (default) configuration or 2) use backup. I've tried both options several times, hitting ok just refreshes screen and nothing more. Rebooting at this point just goes back to command line as before. I don't know what to do at this point, I've spent too many hours this weekend trying in both VBox and VMware to get Ubuntu going. Isn't there like a very basic graphic display or something I can use to at least get into the desktop? I explored the GRUB some more, and tried to look at the startup and xserver logs - both are blank. No help there I guess? When I try to choose 'Edit the configuration file, then 'ok' screen just refreshes on same menu options, nothing happens. thx for any advice. I really need to focus on learning Linux, Apache and PHP, so perhaps Ubuntu just won't work on my hardware? Any other suggestions? I will need to virtualize - THANKS for any help/advice.

• two windows loader in grub

  i'm facing a strange problem about which - googling- i didn't find any solution. This is the issue. I've restored windows 7 trught its hidden partition then i installed kubuntu 12.04 which didn't installed the grub loader. Hence via the same usb-live i used boot-repair which have found all the system that are: kubuntu + its recovery mode windows 7 /dev/sda1 windows 7 /dev/sda2 windows 7 recovery I don't know why i have got 2 windows loader, but they seem (to me) to load the same system. I tryied to see what is there written in the grub.cfg and it seems that the "root" directory for the two system is different eventhought when i load from sda1 i got "Avvio windows" (italian laguange that i choosed) and on sda2 i got "start windows" in the english language when the splash screen load. Can you PLEASE help me removing one of the two entry? i can not really see them, i want only one but i don't know how to act.. Thank you very much indeed. Lorenzo

• Cannot upgrade or install 12.04 - Black screen

  An update from 11.10 to 12.04 failed because of a boot into black screen (Nvidia graphics card) after selecting normal boot in Grub (recovery console was available though). I then wiped the whole partition (deleting all proprietary drivers) and tried a fresh install, but could not run the installation cd because it was booting straight into a black screen again. Now I reinstalled 11.10 (and installed proprietary Nvidia driver version 173), and would like to ask 2 questions: 1 - Is there a proven method to fix this problem from the recovery console, so that I can safely try upgrading again (without much knowledge of Ubuntu)? 2 - Is there a website which I could check for updated Nvidia drivers packaged into the upgrade, so that I can safely upgrade without running into a black screen some time later on?

• kubuntu 12.04 won't start

  I have dual boot config with kubuntu 12.04 and Windows7. My problem started this morning when I tried to boot kubuntu. Everything worked fine a couple of days ago and I have not done any mayor system configurations since then. Choosing kubuntu options from grub gives me this screen A couple of minutes later this screen is shown And then it gets stuck. Have been waiting for ~5mins without anything happening. I have tried running fsck from recovery menu without any errors. I have also tried booting in failsafex mode which gives me "Fatal server error: no screens found". apt-get update gives me "Duplicate sources.list entry". I have also tried fixing broken packages from recovery menu. What should I do next?

• How to remove Ubuntu from dual boot system with Windows 7?

  I wish to remove Ubuntu and I'm not quite sure how. I know it has something to do with partitions. I have 3 partitions. 1. OS [683 GB] 2. Recovery [14 GB] 3. Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (E:) I know it says Ubuntu but when I installed Ubuntu I think I put 14 gigabytes for it so I think its the recovery one but I'm not sure. I could have sworn I put more than 700 megabytes for it. I have googled this and I can't seem to find an answer. Any help would be nice.

• Black screen on boot. FailsafeX: "Screen not found"

  I made a regular update using update center yesterday on My Samsung NP730U3E with Ubuntu gnome 13.10 and today it won't start. Or rather: it just gives me a black screen. On start up I get to enter my encryption password and everything seems fine. But after the encryption password is accepted it just blanks out. When I boot into recovery mode and try to boot failsafeX it returns "Fatal server error: (EE) no screens found (EE)" After booting into recovery mode and "Resume normal boot" I get to the tty1 prompt. If I head over to "tty7", where the graphical things usually are going on I just see this (and it's frozen): What to do?

• Upgrade to Precise leaving system unbootable

  I've upgraded our server's system from Lucid to Precise and as far as I can tell, it left the system in an un-bootable state. I've read many responses in different threads but my problem has a twist. When we boot the server, it says The disc drive for / is not ready yet or not present Continue to wait; or press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery but when I press any of those buttons, it doesn't do anything. I can't boot to any recovery console, and as it is a server and I'm accessing it via iDRAC, there's not much I can do.

• How can I tell what error grub has when I can't read what it's saying?

  Grub won't allow me to get into any systems on my HP dv7 (it runs 12.10). As the screen is broken, I can't read what the error is. Nothing works, not even the recovery mode. It gives me some error about "cannot find" (I think) and Press any (I guess key?) When a press a key I'm dropped back to the menu. At the moment I'm trying all the recovery options I know. However, it would be great if someone could tell me how to know what error grub is facing from a live cd or something (maybe a log file or something could help)? NB: I can view the filesystem from a liveCD, and I did check the filesystem - it was clean.

• Help with infrequent segmentation fault in accessing boost::unordered_multimap or struct

  I'm having trouble debugging a segmentation fault. I'd appreciate tips on how to go about narrowing in on the problem. The error appears when an iterator tries to access an element of a struct Infection, defined as: struct Infection { public: explicit Infection( double it, double rt ) : infT( it ), recT( rt ) {} double infT; // infection start time double recT; // scheduled recovery time }; These structs are kept in a special structure, InfectionMap: typedef boost::unordered_multimap< int, Infection > InfectionMap; Every member of class Host has an InfectionMap carriage. Recovery times and associated host identifiers are kept in a priority queue. When a scheduled recovery event arises in the simulation for a particular strain s in a particular host, the program searches through carriage of that host to find the Infection whose recT matches the recovery time (double recoverTime). (For reasons that aren't worth going into, it's not as expedient for me to use recT as the key to InfectionMap; the strain s is more useful, and coinfections with the same strain are possible.) assert( carriage.size() > 0 ); pair<InfectionMap::iterator,InfectionMap::iterator> ret = carriage.equal_range( s ); InfectionMap::iterator it; for ( it = ret.first; it != ret.second; it++ ) { if ( ((*it).second).recT == recoverTime ) { // produces seg fault carriage.erase( it ); } } I get a "Program received signal EXC_BAD_ACCESS, Could not access memory. Reason: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at address..." on the line specified above. The recoverTime is fine, and the assert(...) in the code is not tripped. As I said, this seg fault appears 'randomly' after thousands of successful recovery events. How would you go about figuring out what's going on? I'd love ideas about what could be wrong and how I can further investigate the problem. Can anyone give me tips on how to figure out how this problem arises? I'm trying to use gdb. Frame 0 from the backtrace reads "#0 0x0000000100001d50 in Host::recover (this=0x100530d80, s=0, recoverTime=635.91148029170529) at Host.cpp:317" I'm not sure what useful information I can extract here. Update 2 I added a break; after the carriage.erase(it). This works, but I have no idea why (e.g., why it would remove the seg fault at (*it).first.

• Django authentication in django nonrel on GAE

  I'm using the Django nonrel project on a google app engine project running locally in development. I've created my own models and these are fine when they are saved and retrieved in the datastore. I'm hoping to use django.contrib.auth to provide the user functionality. I can use the shell to create users and these get assigned an ID. When I create one of my own models which references User I have to pass in a user ID as it quite rightly fails otherwise. However, checking via the gae admin interface I can't see the User model in the datastore for the users I've created via the shell. Nor can I retreive the user details from one of my models which references them. Calls to mymodel.user.username return nothing. Nor can I log into admin using the username and password I've set up. I can see saved versions of the models I've made in the gae admin app. I get the impression that users are being created somewhere other than the datastore. Is there something else I need to do to use the standard contrib.auth users with django-nonrel and gae?

  Hi, I have been trying a few migration scripts for CakePHP but I ran into problems with all of the in some form or another. Please advice me on a migration option for Cake that you use live and know works. I'd like the following "features": -Support CakePHP 1.2(e.g. CakeDCs migrations will only be an option when 1.3 is stable and my app migrated to the new codebase) -Support for (or at least not halt on) Models with a different database config. -Support Models in sub-folders of app/models -Support Models in plugins -Support tables that do not conform to Cake conventions (I have a few special tables that do not have a single primary key field and need to keep them) -Plays well with automated deployment via Capistrano and Git. I do not need rails-style versioned files a git versioned schema file that is compared live to the existing schema will do. That is: I like the SchemaShell in Cake apart from it not being compatible with most of my requirements above. • Django: Complex filter parameters or...?

  This question is connected to my other question but I changed the logic a bit. I have models like this: from django.contrib.auth.models import Group class Category(models.Model): (...) editors = ForeignKey(Group) class Entry(models.Model): (...) category = ForeignKey(Category) Now let's say User logs into admin panel and wants to change an Entry. How do I limit the list of Entries only to those, he has the right to edit? I mean: How can I list only those Entries which are assigned to a Category that in its "editors" field has one of the groups the User belongs to? What if User belongs to several groups? I still need to show all relevant Entries. I tried experimenting with changelist_view() and queryset() methods but this problem is a bit too complex for me. I'm also wondering if granular-permissions could help me with the task, but for now I have no clue. I came up only with this: First I get the list of all Groups the User belongs to. Then for each Group I get all connected Categories and then for each Category I get all Entries that belong to these Categories. Unfortunately I have no idea how to stitch everything together as filter() parameters to produce a nice single QuerySet.

• Doctrine stupid or me stupid?

  I want to use a single Doctrine install on our server and serve multiple websites. Naturally the models should be maintained in the websites' modelsfolder. I have everything up (and not running) like so: Doctrine @ /CustomFramework/Doctrine Websites @ /var/www/vhosts/custom1.com/ /var/www/vhosts/custom2.com/ Generating works fine, all models are delivered in /application_folder/models and /application_folder/models/generated for the correct website. I've added Doctrine::loadModels('path_to_models') in the bootstrap file for each website, and also registered the autoloaded. But.... • Active Record two belongs_to calls or single table inheritance

  In linking a sports event to two teams, at first this seemed to make sense: events - id:integer - integer:home_team_id - integer:away_team_id teams - integer:id - string:name However I am troubled by how I would link that up in the active record model: class Event belongs_to :home_team, :class_name => 'Team', :foreign_key => "home_team_id" belongs_to :away_team, :class_name => 'Team', :foreign_key => "away_team_id" end Is that the best solution? In an answer to a similar question I was pointed to single table inheritance, and then later found polymorphic associations. Neither of which seemed to fit this association. Perhaps I am looking at this wrong, but I see no need to subclass a team into home and away teams since the distinction is only in where the game is played. • LaTeX printing only first two pages of a document

  I am working in LaTeX, and when I create a pdf file (using LaTeX button or pdfLaTeX button or using yap) the pdf has only the first two pages. No errors. It just stops. If I make the first page longer by adding text, it still stops at end of 2nd page. Any ideas? • Django-South introspection rule doesn't work.

  I'm using Django 1.2.3 and South 0.7.3. I am trying to convert my app (named core) to use Django-South. I have a custom model/field that I'm using, named ImageWithThumbsField. It's basically just the ol' django.db.models.ImageField with some attributes such as height, weight, etc. While trying to ./manage.py convert_to_auth core I receieve South's freezing errors. I have no idea why, I'm Probably missing something... I am using a simple custom Model: from django.db.models import ImageField class ImageWithThumbsField(ImageField): def __init__(self, verbose_name=None, name=None, width_field=None, height_field=None, sizes=None, **kwargs): self.verbose_name=verbose_name self.name=name self.width_field=width_field self.height_field=height_field self.sizes = sizes super(ImageField, self).__init__(**kwargs) And this is my introspection rule, which I add to the top of my models.py: from south.modelsinspector import add_introspection_rules from lib.thumbs import ImageWithThumbsField add_introspection_rules( [ ( (ImageWithThumbsField, ), [], { "verbose_name": ["verbose_name", {"default": None}], "name": ["name", {"default": None}], "width_field": ["width_field", {"default": None}], "height_field": ["height_field", {"default": None}], "sizes": ["sizes", {"default": None}], }, ), ], ["^core/.fields/.ImageWithThumbsField",]) This is the errors I receieve: ! Cannot freeze field 'core.additionalmaterialphoto.photo' ! (this field has class lib.thumbs.ImageWithThumbsField) ! Cannot freeze field 'core.material.photo' ! (this field has class lib.thumbs.ImageWithThumbsField) ! Cannot freeze field 'core.material.formulaimage' ! (this field has class lib.thumbs.ImageWithThumbsField) ! South cannot introspect some fields; this is probably because they are custom ! fields. If they worked in 0.6 or below, this is because we have removed the ! models parser (it often broke things). ! To fix this, read http://south.aeracode.org/wiki/MyFieldsDontWork Does anybody know why? What am I doing wrong?

  I have been attempting to install the 'quickstart' tutorial application on my system. After a considerable amount of frustration - a) because I dont know how it all works andb) mine's a windows (wamp) set-up, I have got as far as setting up the guestbook database successfully and reaching the Checkpoint: Now browse to http://localhost/guestbook. You should see the following in your browser: I get error: Warning: include(C:\wamp\www\quickstart\application/models//GuestbookMapper.php) [function.include]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in C:\wamp\www\quickstart\library\Zend\Loader\Autoloader\Resource.php on line 176 Warning: include() [function.include]: Failed opening 'C:\wamp\www\quickstart\application/models//GuestbookMapper.php' for inclusion (include_path='C:\wamp\www\quickstart\library;.;C:\wamp\bin\php\php5.3.0\PEAR;C:\wamp\zend\library;C:\wamp\zend\extras\library') in C:\wamp\www\quickstart\library\Zend\Loader\Autoloader\Resource.php on line 176 Fatal error: Class 'Default_Model_GuestbookMapper' not found in C:\wamp\www\quickstart\application\models\Guestbook.php on line 102 Obviously failing to link relevant files is the main issue - First, that 'C:\wamp\www\quickstart\application/models//GuestbookMapper.php' looks wrong to me, but I cant figure out what's creating it. Second, I have a very tenuous grip on the whole file path system and cant tell whether things are wrongly configured. If I could get the guestbook app to function, then I might be able to get a grip on what's going on. As it is, I seem to fix one problem only to find another round the next corner.
