How can I disable the CTRL-ALT-DEL key combination completely on XP/Vista/7?

I have been googling extensively to figure this out, and nobody seems to be able to give a direct answer. Let me start by saying that I'm NOT talking about requiring CTRL-ALT-DEL to enter logon information. I'm working on a golf simulator program which is used at golf centers. I need the ability to completely disable the CTRL-ALT-DEL key sequence so that the golf center customers can't get out of the program and access the computer at all. I realize there are other key combinations that need to be handled as well, we already have this entire feature working in XP, but we're going to be switching to Windows 7 soon, and CTRL-ALT-DEL is the only one that doesn't seem to work in Win7. I'd really like an all-around solution if at all possible. This same program may also be installed on a client's personal computer for an in-home golf simulator, but the computers that really need this feature (golf center computers) are provided to the golf center by us, so would the best option be to write a new shell? I don't know anything about that at all, other than others that suggest writing a new shell for kiosk mode. I'd really like a simpler option, like modifying the registry in some way. I have heard that you can remove some buttons from the menu screen that pops up, but unless I can remove pretty much all of them (including the shutdown/restart button in the bottom-right corner), this won't be enough of a solution for me. Thumbnail Provider not working

I'm trying to write a Windows Explorer thumbnail handler for our custom file type. I've got this working fine for the preview pane, but am having trouble getting it to work for the thumbnails. Windows doesn't even seem to be trying to call the DllGetClassObject entry point. Before I continue, note that I'm using Windows 7 and unmanaged C++. I've registered the following values in the registry: HKCR\CLSID\<my guid> HKCR\CLSID\<my guid>\InprocServer32 (default value being path to my DLL) HKCR\CLSID\<my guid>\InprocServer32\ThreadingModel (value = "Apartment") HKCR\.<my ext>\shellex\{E357FCCD-A995-4576-B01F-234630154E96} (value = my guid) I've also tried using the Win SDK sample, and that doesn't work. And also the sample project in this article (http://www.codemonkeycodes.com/2010/01/11/ithumbnailprovider-re-visited/), and that doesn't work. I'm new to shell programming, so not really sure the best way of debugging this. I've tried attaching the debugger to explorer.exe, but that doesn't seem to work (breakpoints get disabled, and none of my OutputDebugStrings get displayed in the output window). Note that I tried setting the "DesktopProcess" in the registry as described in the WinSDK docs for debugging the shell, but I'm still only seeing one explorer.exe in the task manager - so that "may" be why I can't debug it?? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated! Regards, Dan.

Killing HTML nodes from shell

Need a solution to kill nodes like <footer>foobar</footer> and <div class="nav"></div> from many several HTML files. I want to dump a site to disk without the menus and footers and what not. Ideally I would accomplish this task using basic unix tools like sed. Since it's not XML I can't use xmlstarlet. Could anyone please suggest recipes, so I can ideally have a script running kill-node.sh 'div class="toplinks"' *.html to prune the bits I don't want. Thank you,

OpenSSL "Seal" in C (or via shell)

I'm working on porting some PHP code to C, that contacts a web API. The issue I've come across is that the PHP code uses the function openssl_seal(), but I can't seem to find any way to do the same thing in C or even via openssl in a call to system(). From the PHP manual on openssl_seal(): int openssl_seal ( string $data , string &$sealed_data , array &$env_keys , array $pub_key_ids ) openssl_seal() seals (encrypts) data by using RC4 with a randomly generated secret key. The key is encrypted with each of the public keys associated with the identifiers in pub_key_ids and each encrypted key is returned in env_keys . This means that one can send sealed data to multiple recipients (provided one has obtained their public keys). Each recipient must receive both the sealed data and the envelope key that was encrypted with the recipient's public key. What would be the best way to implement this? I'd really prefer not to call out to a PHP script every time, for obvious reasons.

Bash script "read" not pausing for user input when executed from SSH shell

I'm new to Bash scripting, so please be gentle. I'm connected to a Ubuntu server via SSH (PuTTY) and when I run this command, I expect the bash script that downloads and executes to allow user input and then echo that input. It seems to just write out the echo label for the input request and terminate. wget -O - https://raw.github.com/aaronhancock/pub/master/bash/readtest.sh | bash Any clue what I might be doing wrong? I have some legacy python scripts that manage my shell environment for all the programs and plugins I am running on Linux (bash) and windows (cmd.exe). I want to port this to powershell. How do I set environment variables in powershell by calling python script that prints $env:myVar=myvalue and causes my environment variable to persist in the powershell. In Bash I can use a bash function to call my python script which prints export var=value to stdout and the function will set the environment variables in my shell. This will also work in windows cmd shell by calling a .bat file. I cannot figure out how to do this in powershell. Postscript This script is really awful, but has the redeeming quality that it Works On My Systems. Note that several mount points may be prefixes of $path. Examples On a Linux system: cas@txtproof:~$ path=/sys/block/hda1 cas@txtproof:~$ for i in $(df -a|cut -c 57-99); do case $path in $i*) echo $i;; esac; done| tail -1 /sys On a Mac osx system cas local$ path=/dev/fd/0 cas local$ for i in $(df -a|cut -c 63-99); do case $path in $i*) echo $i;; esac; done| tail -1 /dev Note the need to vary cut's parameters, because of the way df's output differs: indeed, awk is better. Answer It looks like munging tabular output is the only way within the shell, but df /dev/fd/impossible | tail -1 | awk '{ print $NF}' is a big improvement on what I had. Note two differences in semantics: firstly, df $path insists that $path names an existing file, the script I had above doesn't care; secondly, there are no worries about dereferncing symlinks. It's not difficult to write Python code to do the job.

Secure method of changing a user's password via Python script/non-interactively

I've created a Python script using Fabric to configure a freshly built Slicehost Ubuntu slice. In case you're not familiar with Fabric, it uses Paramiko, a Python SSH2 client, to provide remote access "for application deployment or systems administration tasks." One of the first things I have the Fabric script do is to create a new admin user and set their password. Unlike Pexpect, Fabric cannot handle interactive commands on the remote system, so I need to set the user's password non-interactively. At present, I'm using the chpasswd command to change the password. This transmits the password as clear text over SSH to the remote system. Questions Is my current method of setting the password a security concern? Currently, the drawback I see is that Fabric shows the password as clear text on my local system as follows: [xxx.xx.xx.xxx] run: echo "johnsmith:supersecretpassw0rd" | chpasswd. Since I only run the Fabric script from my laptop, I don't think this is a security issue, but I'm interested in others' input. Is there a better method for setting the user's password non-interactively? Another option, would be to use Pexpect from within the Fabric script to set the password. Debugging HTML & JavaScript with Firebug

I made a JSONP widget. However, when one of the partner sites put it in their page, (1) it doesn't render at all in IE and (2) in other browsers (Firefox & Google Chrome), the HTML of the widget renders incorrectly: the <aside> closes prematurely, before the Financial Aid Glossary. It's something specific to that page because it works fine on this example college resource center page. To fix these two issues, I tried saving the page source to a local file and messing around with the local file and with Firebug, deleting DOM elements and stuff. I even tried fixing the errors that The W3C Markup Validation Service found. But, I still couldn't get it to render correctly. How should I tell them to change their page so that the widget renders correctly? Or, how should I update the widget script I wrote? redirecting output from telnet / nc to file in script fails when cron'd

So, I have device on my network which sits there listening on a port for a connection, and when a connection is made it dumps ascii data out. I need to capture that data to a file. I wrote a dead simple shell script that does this: #!/bin/bash #Config Variables. Age is in Days. Aborting" exit 1 fi #Get Data nc $HOST 2202 > $DATA_ROOT/$FILENAME #Compress old Data find $DATA_ROOT -type f -mtime +$COMPRESS_AGE -exec gzip {} \; exit 0 It works great when I run it by hand, but when I run it from cron, it doesn't capture any of the output. If I replace nc with telnet I see the initial telnet headers about escape sequences and whatnot, but not the data. Ideas? I've tried forcing bash to act like an interactive shell with -i. I've tried redirecting both stderr and stdout. I know it's got to be some silly simple thing, but I'm utterly failing. This is driving me nuts... EDIT I also just noticed that the nc processes from all my previous attempts at this have been siting sleeping, and when I killed them, cron sent me a bunch of non-sensical error messages. At least now I have something to dig into!

I've got a very weird bug which I've yet to find a solution. UPDATE see solution below What I am trying to do is convert a full size picture into a 160x120 thumbnail. It works great with jpg and jpeg files of any size, but not with png. Stdin to powershell script

I have a service running that can invoke an external process to modify a text stream before it is returned to the service. The text stream is handed from the service to the external process on stdout and the modified result is read from the service on stdin. The external process (command) can in other words be used as a text "filter". I would like to use a powershell script to modify the text stream. I can successfully launch a script from the service on win 2008r2 using the command "powershell -executionpolicy bypass -noninteractive ./myscript.ps1". I can make the script return text to the service on stdout using the write-host cmdlet. My problem is that I can't find a way to read the text on stdin in the script. Read-host doesn't seem to work as it requires an interactive shell. I would like to avoid writing the stdout from the service to a tmp file and read that file in the script as the service is multithreaded (can launch more than one external command at a time) and tmp file management (locking, unique filenames etc) is not desired. Is this possible or should I use for example Perl for this? Powershell seems compelling as it is preinstalled on all my win 2008 machines.

Crontab no error but doesn't execute script

I'm trying to execute a shell script from cron on Freebsd. To test wether crontab is working at all, i wrote the line * * * * * echo "Hello" /home/myuser/logile and it work fine. But when trying to execute any script it doesn't do anything, not even an error. (In the script i tried to run is just the same echo command) Below is the output of crontab -l: SHELL=/bin/sh PATH=/etc:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin HOME=/home/myuser MAILTO=myuser * * * * * /home/myuser/shellscript.sh /home/myuser/logfile why is the script not getting executed, although crontab is obviously running? permission for all files are set to rwxr-xr-x

Greeting, I'm trying to put some Beanshell script in my Ant build.xml file. I've followed the Ant manual as well as I can but I keep getting "Unable to create javax script engine for beanshell" when I run Ant. Here is the test target I wrote mostly from examples in the Ant manual: <target name="test-target"> <script language="beanshell" setbeans="true"> <classpath> <fileset dir="c:\TEMP" includes="*.jar" /> </classpath> System.out.println("Hello world"); </script> </target> My beanshell "bsh-2.0b4.jar" file is on the script task's classpath the way the manual recommended. Hope I have the right file. I'm working in c:\TEMP right now. I've been googling and trying for a while now. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Batch file script to remove special characters from filenames (Windows)

I have a large set of files, some of which contain special characters in the filename (e.g. ä,ö,%, and others). I'd like a script file to iterate over these files and rename them removing the special characters. I don't really mind what it does, but it could replace them with underscores for example e.g. Störung%20.doc would be renamed to St_rung_20.doc In order of preference: A DOS batch file A Windows script file to run with cscript (vbs) A third party piece of software that can be run from the command-line (i.e. no user interaction required) Another language script file, for which I'd have to install an additional script engine Background: I'm trying to encrypt these file with GnuPG on Windows but it doesn't seem to handle special characters in filenames with the --encrypt-files option.

How do I automate navigation to a website that requires authentication?

Here's what I'm trying to achieve. I would like to write a script that will navigate to a website that requires me to be authenticated as myself, say Facebook, Live Spaces, Twitter or any other, and then have that script search for certain information on one of the pages of the website. I've done something similar in the past with the Windows.Forms WebBrowser control, which is a full blown implementation of IE that can be controlled through code and will store whatever cookies you get once you're authenticated, but it was very unfriendly to modify and I was hoping to use a scripting language instead, maybe Powershell or something of that sort. Are there maybe some good tutorials about this out there on the web? Thanks!

I have a file named cmd that contains a list of unix commands as follows: hostname pwd ls /tmp cat /etc/hostname ls -la ps -ef | grep java cat cmd I have another script that executes the commands in cmd as: IFS=$'\n' clear for cmds in `cat cmd` do if [ $cmds ] ; then $cmds; echo "****************************"; fi done The problem is that commands in cmd without spaces run fine, but those with spaces are not correctly interpreted by the script. The Python script accepts the name of the data file as a command-line parameter, but Windows Explorer doesn't allow the script to be a drop target. Hi, This might sound like a reaaaally dumb question but... why do browsers have a fit with this syntax: <script type='text/javascript' src="/path/to/my.js" /> and want this instead <script type='text/javascript' src="/path/to/my.js"></script> Seems the first construct should be valid since there's no inner content to the tag.. ?
