• Server socket programming in Android 1.5, most power efficient way?

  Hello people, I am doing a project where I have too develop an application that listens for incoming events by a service. The device that has to listen too events is an Android phone with Android SDK 1.5 on it. Currently the services that call events only implement communication trough UDP or TCP sockets. I can solve my problem by setting up a ServerSocket, but i doubt that's the most power efficient way. This application will be running most of the time, with Wi-Fi on, and I'd like too reach an long battery duration. I've been looking for options on the internet for my question for a while but i couldn't get a real answer. I've got the following questions: What is the most efficient way too listen to incoming events? Should I make an ServerSocket? or what are my options? Are there any other implementations that are more power efficient? Ive been also thinking of implementing communication trough XMPP. Not sure if this is the best way. I'm not forced too an specific implementation. All suggestions are welcome! Thanks for the help, Antek

• Base URL in ASP.net Master Pages with virtual Directories

  Hi All, I have an ASP.net master page. In this master, I have all my css and javascript files defined. I also have a few images and a few buttons and hyperlinks. All the urls are all declared as relative ie "/scripts/ian.js" Everything works fine if this site is the root website, but I need it to work in a virtual directory. My problem is when I place this website in a virtual directory under a root site, all my links are pointing to the root site. so my links point to www.root.com/scripts/ian.js but it should be pointing to www.root.com/virtualDir/scripts/ian.js I thought the Base Href tag in the header would help, but so far it does not seem to be helping in anyway. All the links are still pointing to the root website when i hover over them. Any suggestions or ideas are welcome. Thanks

• Always handle the PreviewKeyDown event in a base form

  We need to handle this event in the base form, regardless of which controls currently have focus. We have a couple of global key commands that need to work regardless of control focus. This works by handling the PreviewKeyDown event in the form normally. When we add a user control to the form, the event no longer fires. Am I missing something trivial here? • iPhone Simulator chrashes in NSKeyedUnarchiver after setting base SDK

  Hi! I started a project in xcode (3.2 on snow leopard) with base sdk 3.1.2. Now I changed this setting to 3.0 and it compiles without a warning. There are no problems running the app on the device, but the simulator crashes on launch every time with the following exception: Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '[NSKeyedUnarchiver initForReadingWithData:]: incomprehensible archive (0x4e, 0x49, 0x42, 0x41, 0x72, 0x63, 0x68, 0x69)' I do not use the NSKeyedUnarchiver, so why is the app trying to call it? And what archive is incomprehensible? I reset the simulator before building, so there are no userDefaults or anything else around. Thanks for your help!

• Stack / base pointers in assembly

  I know this topic has been covered ad-naseum here, and other places on the internet - but hopefully the question is a simple one as I try to get my head around assembly... So if i understand correctly the ebp (base pointer) will point to the top of the stack, and the esp (stack pointer) will point to the bottom -- since the stack grows downward. esp therefore points to the 'current location'. So on a function call, once you've saved the ebp on the stack you insert a new stack frame - for the function. So in the case of the image below, if you started from N-3 you would go to N-2 with a function call. But when you are at N-2 - is your ebp == 25 and the esp == 24 (at least initially, before any data is placed on the stack)? Is this correct or am I of on a tangent here? Thanks!

Of course, I could start playing around with the margins until they match up, but since this is such a common requirement I'm sure that WPF provides a much easier and more elegant solution, which I just haven't found yet...

• Django IN query as a string result - invalid literal for int() with base 10

  Trying to query a 'Favorites' model to get a list of items a user has favorited, and then querying against a different model to get the objects back from that query to present to the template, but I'm getting an error: "invalid literal for int() with base 10" Looking over all of the other instances of that error, I couldn't find any in which the asker actually wanted to work with a comma separated list of integers, so I'm kind of at a loss.   Hi, I would like to know whether or not JAVA is installed and where (path). Perhaps it sounds strange, but my aim is to let BOINC (coded in C++) check the JAVA installation and then start my JAVA app. But therefore I need to know if BOINC can start JAVA natively, or if I have to also send the JRE and then start my app with this not installed JRE.   We have a signon script that requires a Windows password in order to access and validate against the SAS metadata server. The problem is that if the windows password is changed, and the script is run a few without being updated, then the user gets locked out and has to call IT support for a password reset. What is the simplest way of using Base SAS to validate a windows password? ie to enable a warning to the user if the password provided is not valid... EDIT: The concern is not whether or not this SHOULD be done, only HOW it could be done!

What interesting things can you do at each? How does ViewState work and why is it either useful or bad? What is a common way to create web services in ASP.NET 2.0? What is the GAC? What is boxing? What is a delegate? The C# keyword .int. maps to which .NET type? Explain the difference between a Stored Procedure and a Trigger? What is an OUTER Join? What is @@IDENTITY? Part Two: You are provided with the Northwind Database and the attached DB relationship diagram. Please create a page which provides users with the following functionality. You don’t need to be too concerned with the presentation detail of the page. Select a customer from a list, and see all the orders placed by that customer. For the same customer, find all their orders which are Beverages and the quantity is more than 5. I was aware of setting the right balance of difficulty on this as there is an hour's test. I was able to complete the practical test in under 30 mins using SQLDatasource and the query designer in visual studio and the test questions, I am looking to see how they approach it logically and whether they use the tools available. • DataAdapter Select string from base table schema?

  When I built my .xsd, I had to choose the columns for each table, and it made a schema for the tables, right? So how can I get that Select string to use as a base Select command for new instances of dataadapters, and then just append a Where and OrderBy clause to it as needed? That would keep me from having to keep each DataAdapter's field list (for the same table) in synch with the schema of that table in the .xsd file. Isn't it common to have several DataAdapters that work on a certain table schema, but with different params in the Where and OrderBy clauses? Surely one does not have to maintain (or even redundently build) the field list part of the Select strings for half a dozen DataAdapters that all work off of the same table schema. I'm envisioning something like this pseudo code: BaseSelectString = MyTypedDataSet.JobsTable.GetSelectStringFromSchema() // Is there such a method or technique? For example RewriteRule ^Flash$ /index.php?section=flash [L,NC] By using this code when i hot domain.com/Flash it redirects me to www.domain.com/index.php? section=flash. This works fine. But now what i want to have two more site with the same htaccess file. So can anyone help me in redirecting the url with same htaccess for multiple site. Can i find the base url and redirect depending on that??

  In CodeIgniter I'm using a base CRUD My_model, but I have this small problem in my browse-controller.. My $data['posts'] gets all posts from the table called "posts". Though the author in that table is just a user_id, which is why I need to use my "getusername" function (gets the username from a ID - the ID) to grab the username from the users table. Though I don't know how to proceed from here, since it is not just one post. Therefore I need the username to either be a part of the $data['posts'] array or some other smart solution.   Hi, so in my program I have parts where I use try catch blocks like this try { DirectoryInfo dirInfo = new DirectoryInfo(someString); //I don't know if that directory exists //I don't know if that string is valid path string... it could be anything //Some operations here } catch(Exception iDontCareWhyItFailed) { //Didn't work? great... we will say: somethings wrong, try again/next one } Of course I probably could do checks to see if the string is valid path (regex), then I would check if directory exists, then I could catch various exceptions to see why my routine failed and give more info... But in my program it's not really necessary. Now I just really need to know if this is acceptable, and what would a pro say/think about that. Thanks a lot for attention.

  I'm at a company, we keep recieviing new codebases from a third party vendor. we'd like to track the changes in subversion. is there a way to replace a branch with the new code and track the changes? currently we just delete all files in the branch, and then add the new files and commit. we'd like to track the files, but I havn't found a tool that will easily deal with all the .svn directories found in subfolders. does anyone know a tool that will replace an svn directory with a new branch and create the respective modify add and delete records as if the code base was organically modified?

So in every page of the site I'm using my own custom class as the page base (which has been set in the web.config file) but I want to inherit from different class for the files in the "admin" folder... My question : New languages extend parent ones or there is some kind of a trick? e.g. System.out.print() in Java ; is it actually printf() in C, and so on (printf is actually .. in Cpl)? If so, doesn't this make every further language be slower and need more memory? What separates a new language from a framework?

  I am building a trading portfolio management system that is responsible for production, optimization, and simulation of non-high frequency trading portfolios (dealing with 1min or 3min bars of data, not tick data). I plan on employing Amazon web services to take on the entire load of the application. I have four choices that I am considering as language. a) Java b) C++ c) C# d) Python Here is the scope of the extremes of the project scope. This isn't how it will be, maybe ever, but it's within the scope of the requirements: Weekly simulation of 10,000,000 trading systems. (Each trading system is expected to have its own data mining methods, including feature selection algorithms which are extremely computationally-expensive. Imagine 500-5000 features using wrappers. These are not run often by any means, but it's still a consideration) Real-time production of portfolio w/ 100,000 trading strategies Taking in 1 min or 3 min data from every stock/futures market around the globe (approx 100,000) Portfolio optimization of portfolios with up to 100,000 strategies. (rather intensive algorithm) Speed is a concern, but I believe that Java can handle the load. I just want to make sure that Java CAN handle the above requirements comfortably. I don't want to do the project in C++, but I will if it's required. The reason C# is on there is because I thought it was a good alternative to Java, even though I don't like Windows at all and would prefer Java if all things are the same. Python - I've read somethings on PyPy and pyscho that claim python can be optimized with JIT compiling to run at near C-like speeds.... That's pretty much the only reason it is on this list, besides that fact that Python is a great language and would probably be the most enjoyable language to code in, which is not a factor at all for this project, but a perk. To sum up: - real time production - weekly simulations of a large number of systems - weekly/monthly optimizations of portfolios - large numbers of connections to collect data from There is no dealing with millisecond or even second based trades. The only consideration is if Java can possibly deal with this kind of load when spread out of a necessary amount of EC2 servers. Thank you guys so much for your wisdom.

  Hi, I'm using Visual Studio 2008 with the Boost v1.42.0 library. If I use an enum as the template argument, I get a compile error when adding a value using push_back(). The compiler error is: 'T': is not a legal base class and the location of the error is move.hpp line 79. #include <boost/interprocess/containers/vector.hpp> class Test { public: enum Types { Unknown = 0, First = 1, Second = 2, Third = 3 }; typedef boost::container::vector<Types> TypesVector; }; int main() { Test::TypesVector o; o.push_back(Test::First); return 0; } If I use a std::vector instead it works. And if I resize the Boost version first and then set the values using the [] operator it also works. Is there some way to make this work using push_back()?

• What is the most useful programming language that no one is using?

  What language do you find incredibly useful that no one else seems to care about? I am not looking for the language with the coolest features, but the language that makes you the most productive. I realize that a productive language that no one uses is a bit of an oxymoron. My personal choice would probably be ruby without rails, but I am sure others can come up with some better answers.
