How to install an anonymous proxy in Ubuntu 9.10 server which listens on every public network ethernet interfaces?
I have other service like Nginx, MySQL running on that server so I hope the proxy server wont conflict with them.
I have a system with Ubuntu 9.10 installed.
I can connect to remote windows shares by using the "connect to server" under "places" menu.
I can't figure out where these mount in the file system. Is it possible to mount it in the file system.
And I can't install smbfs or anything else. I need to use only what comes on the live CD, as there is no internet connection and no way to get in packages.
Hi,
I installed libjpeg62 and imagemagick on my ubuntu 10.04 (lucid).
Running identify command with a gif works but running it with a jpeg produces this error:
identify: no decode delegate for this image format `stream,13307,0.jpg' @ error/constitute.c/ReadImage/532.
Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks!
Since there us a defect in my laptop screen, I am using an external Dell 1600x1000 monitor. Windows was recognizing the native resolution correctly. But when I installed Ubuntu 10.10, I get only up to 1024x768 in the Monitor preferences. I had a look at this and tried to add resolution by running
xrandr --addmode VGA 1600×1000
but I am getting the error
xrandr: cannot find output "VGA"
What is the way out.
I used Network Manager in Ubuntu 10.04 to set a static ip address and assigned one that was already in use. Now my computer will not boot (nfs crashes).
I booted from a live cd to change the configuration on the file system in /etc/network/interfaces but the file looks to be the default. Where does the network manager (the gui from system- preferences) store it's configuration so I can overwrite it and enter the correct ip addresss and have a happy working computer again.
thanks!!

I can't figure out where these mount in the file system. And how can I get this to mount automatically on startup?
And I can't install smbfs or anything else. I need to use only what comes on the live CD, as there is no internet connection and no way to get in packages.
I have only previously played with ubuntu using virtual machines with VMware Fusion. So everything just sort of worked. I've never had to install any drivers. I'm considering putting it on some real hardware and using it as a media center. What should I be looking for as far as checking hardware compatibility? How does installing drivers work? Any quick and easy recommendations / guides?
Hey I have to make a file system with an encrypted partition with on ubuntu server. something like
Unencrypted:
/ - 10 GB
/home - 10GB
/var - 5GB
--------------
Encrypted:
/opt - 50GB
This I can figure out in the setup, just partition as normal, setup /tmp as a encrypted volume with dm-crypt. However im not sure how to mirror this entire drive, so that if either failed i could still boot. and how will that affect the encrypted partition.
Any help would be appreciated.
I recently added NFS to my Ubuntu server and edited /etc/fstab to mount the network file system. After a reboot I am not getting the following error several times on the console and it will not boot /etc/init.d/rc: 317: sed: Permission Denied
Any advice? I have commented out the lines that I added to /etc/fstab and the issue still persists.
Thank You,
I have a new computer with an Asus P8Z68-V LE + Intel i2500 + 8GB of RAM.
I installed Ubuntu without any issue, but the USB3 (from the motherboard - on the back of the computer) doesn't work.
I plug a USB stick -- nothing, I plug my USB3 external drive -- nothing, when I plug them into the USB2 and everything works perfectly.
Also, I ran all updates and everything is up to date.
What am I missing?
I'm using wine in order to install and run yahoo messenger on ubuntu(9.10) But it does not detect the webcam. Not unlike in skype that it can detect(skype not run through wine).

Hi,
I wanted to ask if it is possible to create a user account on Ubuntu so that it had all powers and rights of root account except it would be impossible to edit a certain file.
What I intend to do is to edit host file in order to block access of certain websites, and then create a user account which would be the same as root account except it would be not able to edit host file. Maybe there is an easier way to block an access of certain sites forever?
Thanks!
Hello all i've just migrated my desktop machine to Ubuntu 10.04. My problem is that i've purged a package and can't install this package back. Because I can't see it in the aptitude or apt-get's package list. I think I have play with some configurations. How can i fix this issue?
On Ubuntu it is possible to have multiple JVMs at the same time. The default one is selected with update-alternatives. But this does not set the JAVA_HOME environment variable, due to a debian policy.
I am writing a launcher script (bash), which starts a java application. This java application needs the JAVA_HOME environment variable. So how to get the path of the JVM which is currently selected by update-alternatives?
Is it possible to do the following in Ubuntu? If so can someone point me in the right direction.
Say you want to set a keyboard shortcut to do the following:
For examples sake, set Alt+F to open Firefox and maximize it, but only if Firefox is not already running. If it is running and not maximized, then maximize the most recently touched Firefox window. If it is maximized, then minimize Firefox.
Thanks, Joe
Prompted from a question about MySQL server security best practices, I've been running through this list (with a few minor alterations) to properly secure my server database server:
http://www.greensql.net/publications/mysql-security-best-practices
On step 10, I'm told to change the root directory for the mysql user using chroot, but very few specifics are provided and I'm not sure where to start. Does anyone know of a good resource for walking me through the steps to properly create a chrooted environment for Ubuntu 10.10?
I'm so sick of this problem. Some time back I changed to windows because of this, and now I'm back in Ubuntu and guess what. This still hasn't been fixed. How is it possible that something so simple yet crippling isn't fixed faster? This is why windows always wins in the end, because of stupid details like this.
I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 rightnow, but I'd like to install kernel 2.6.33 into it.
I see that there's deb files on kernel sites. Problems is that I cannot just download these deb files and have dpkg install them for me because wireless and graphic drivers cannot be compiled against the new kernel.
Is there any way to do that?
Is it possible to open inbound connections to a machine connected to a VPN server?
The machine is running ubuntu 9.10 with two network devices(a wireless card and ethernet port), I can connect to my machine locally using a local ip but when I try port forward using my router I can't connect from my external ip.
Is there a way around this? I figure with 2 network devices I can vpn over one and use the other for inbound connections but I can't figure out how to do this.
Thanks
I want to backup my list of manually selected packages in Ubuntu, without listing packages installed as dependencies. For example,
dpkg --get-selections
returns a complete list of all installed packages, manually selected as well as dependencies. How can I filter dependencies?
I own an Ubuntu 10 VPS Server with Apache 2 hosting a Magento website. The first hit to the site from any client takes about 15-20 sec, while the subsequent hits from the same client take 0-1 sec. I suppose it doesn't have to do with Magento caching, because this happens also when the first call is on a very light page and the next calls are on heavy ones.
Does anyone have an idea on what is going wrong here?
