• Microsoft Speech Recognition in web service

  I'm trying to use the System.Speech.Recognition namespace for recognizing speech in a web service. Actually, the WS calls a dll that uses this namespace. The problem is that...I can't. First, I had a Access denied error. After changing the Identity of my application pool to LocalSystem (security break, I know), that disappeared. But a timeout appeared. I receive no error, but no response either. I did some tests, and, the same code (very simple) that I use for recognizing the text in a WAV returns the answer in around 2 seconds, when integrated in a desktop application, but hangs and does nothing in a web application. I think I'm missing something... I'm not supposed to use System.Speech.Recognition in a web application? Am I supposed to use something else? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

• VB.NET ASP.NET Web Application woes (VS 2008)

  Hi all, I am making my first web application with ASP.NET and I am having a rough time. I have previously created the application I am working on as a Windows Form application and it works great, but I am having problems with the HTML side of things in the web application. My issues are pretty minor, but very annoying. I have worked with websites before and CSS, but as far as I can tell I do not have direct access to a CSS when creating a web application in VS 2008. My biggest issue is the positioning of components that I have dragged onto the "Default.aspx" form. For instance, how am I supposed to float a panel next to another one if I don't have a CSS, or how am I to correctly position a label?

• Strategies for Error Handling in .NET Web Services

  I have a fairly substantial library of web services built in .NET that I use as a data model for our company web sites. In most .NET applications I use the Global ASAX file for profiling, logging, and creating bug reports for all exceptions thrown by the application. Global ASAX isn't available for web services so I'm curious as to what other strategies people have come up with to work around this limitation. • Web Service appears as website instead of developer web server

  I recently reimaged my PC and regrabbed one of our projects from Source Safe. In our solution we have a web service that normally runs on a server, however we can build the webservice on our localhost for debugging as well. However, now whenever I grab the project from source safe it is building the webservice as a website instead of a developer web server. This is causing a variety of issue, specifically I am no longer able to specify which port I would like that webservice to use. As a result I cannot connect to our database through my local webservice. How can I change the project in my solution that controls the webservice from a website to a developer web server?   Is there a way to take automatic screenshots of a web page (by specifying its URL) in a web app using PHP or Ruby on Rails? Perhaps using a plugin or some external REST service. I've researched a lot, and nothing seems to fit except something like this (http://www.binarymoon.co.uk/2010/02/automated-take-screenshots-website-free/) but I doubt Wordpress would just let me spam their servers for something not Wordpress related.   Hi. I have some web services and I am creating a web client using ws-import. When creating the client I have this line: MyServiceService service = new MyServiceService(); It works fine as it is. I have the same web services running on another server and I was wondering if I could access them using the same client. Is it possible to change the wsdl url of the client? Ctrl-Space in Eclipse gives me 2 parameters which I can enter into MyServiceService which are URL arg0 and Qname arg1. Is this what I'm looking for? And if this is the case what should I put in Qname since I didn't find any Javadoc associated and didn't find it on google neither Thanks and regards, Krt_Malta

Would especially like something similar to Joel. Something that is a bit edgy but informative. Pragmatic programmer has some key concepts but is a bit dry.

  Hi. Im looking to deploy a web application on a build server. It is a very small web app and so far i have written a nice little console app that checks out from SVN and then calls msbuild on the .sln file. This of course is not the same as publishing a web app and so far have not found a programatic way of publishing. So my question is this.. After msbuild has run can i simply delete all .cs and .vb files and then deploy? or Should i really try and find a way to publish programatically?

  I am trying to Add a Web Reference to http//.../service.asmx file in my project. First it gives me an error: "... Unable to download following files from: http://.../service.asmx?wsdl Do you want to skip these files and continue ..." When i click 'Yes', the proxy gets created with .disco and other reference files, but does not adds .wsdl file. Other option i tried, i used http//.../service.asmx?wsdl to add web reference. In this case, i dont get any error, but the proxy gets added with .wsdl and reference files, but it does not adds .disco file. Can someone help me on why this is happening? I thought, adding web reference to .asmx should add everything under the proxy.

  Hi there, I have created a custom MembershipProvider class, so far so good, however, I am not sure how to read the configuration settings from the web.config file. I tried to search from Google and Stackoverflow, seems like someone also experiencing my problem and asked, but no answer has been given. • Low overhead Java Web Services container?

  I want to provide a Java-based Web Service, but I don't require the features of a full-blown J2EE Application Server. I would like it to start as quickly as possible, though that's not a hard requirement. The Web Service will handle multiple connections and require access to an Oracle database so it will at least require a thread pool and database connection pool. I may want to put a JSP interface onto it later to provide an internal maintainence interface. I have looked at Jetty with an Apache CXF stack, but it looks like I'll have to do a fair amount configuration before even coding the web service - Will it be worth it? Will it even work? Should I forget about the complexity and simply go with JBoss/Weblogic/etc and put up with the bloat and extra start-up time?

• What's the best way to handle web.config file versions in ASP.Net?

  I have an ASP.Net web site (ASPX and ASMX pages) with a single web.config file. We have a development version and a production version. Over time, the web.config files for development and production have diverged substantially. What is the best practice for keeping both versions of web.config in source control (we use Tortoise SVN but I don't think that matters)? It seems like I could add the production web.config file with a name like "web.config.prod", and then when we turnover all the files we would just add the step of deleting the existing web.config and renaming web.config.prod to web.config. This seems hackish, although I'm sure it would work. Is there not some mechanism for dealing with this built in to Visual Studio? It seems like this would be a common issue, but I haven't found any questions (with answers) about this.

  Hi, I have some data which I think would be best to be represented in XML. I want this data to be transmitted from a Java Web service to a web client so basically I want the XML data to be transmitted. What I'm thinking is reading from the XML file from the web service converting it to an object and sending it to the client and the client would convert it to xml again. • Passing a web service an unknown number of parameters

  I'm relatively new to utilizing web services. I'm trying to create one that will be accepting data from a ASP.Net form whose input controls are created dynamically at runtime and I don't how many control values will be getting passed. I'm thinking I'll be using jQuery's serialize() on the form to get the data, but what do I have the web service accept for a parameter? I thought maybe I could use serializeArray(), but still I don't know what type of variable to accept for the JavaScript array. Finally, I was thinking that I might need to create a simple data transfer object with the data before sending it along to the web service. I just didn't wanna go through with the DTO route if there was a much simpler way or an established best practice that I should follow. • Validating call to web service against schema before sending request

  I am calling a web service (written in Java) in my web app. I use the WSDL to generate proxy classes using the wsdl.exe command line tool. Everything is working fine. However, I have found out that the web service is not doing any data validation at all when they receive a request from my app. Hence, if I happen to send one minute piece of data that isn't exactly what they want, I receive a general fault error in return, with no specifics at all of what the incorrect (if any) piece of data is. So, before I make the request, I'd like to validate my request against the schema they have provided. Is this possible, and if so, how do I go about this? Thanks in advance

  Hi there! We are currently developing a apache2-based web application and want to invite some beta testers to give it a try. To be on the safe side, access should be provided by individual browser certificates (.p12) which are issued using a (fake) CA. Our users should be passing a complete register/login process and some of them will be granted administrative privileges within the application. That's why a preceding simple web-based authentication won't be sufficient. Atm, I using a serverside shellscript to generate the certificates each time. Do you know about a small, web-based tool to simplify the process of generating / revoking those certificates? Maybe an overview of the CA's index.txt plus the option to revoke a cert and a link to download them directly?

  Hi, I am trying to implement a service to download a image file. The code does nothing but upload a file to the response with each client request. There are no SOAP messages involved but I am planning to implement it as ASP.NET web service. It can also be implement as ASP.NET website but since it has no view (forms, html etc) I planned to implement a web-service. Is this a better approach?
